To say that Louis was not happy would be an understatement but at the same time he could understand. After all his own parents had spent some years apart when their marriage had hit the rocks and for a time Louis had thought they’d divorce, in fact it had been a surprise when they had reconciled especially when he later learned that they had had affairs. As angry as Louis was the Tau’ri could not hate Malek or blame the symbiote for attempting to move on with his life.
What was surprising was Delek’s grudging acceptance of Malek’s supposed betrayal; in fact Delek did not seem surprised. But Sebastian was given control as if Delek was hiding from them. Perhaps the other Tok’Ra was simply mulling over what he had learned and trying to come to a decision about their future. After all if they were married, what did that mean for Feodore? The handsome male did not deserve to be treated like trash by the Tok’Ra and Delek must know that Louis and Malek loved the human.
But there was a bigger issue to be dealt with before they could consider their relationship and Feodore’s place in it. The treaty between their people and Earth had to take priority and their reconciliation had to be recognised by the rest of the council. Many would accept the reopened bond but Malek knew Ocker would be against it now that his guard knew the truth.
“I will go and face Ocker.” Malek finally stated, breaking the silence between them. Nefertari was sulking in the corner, she disliked the silence between them and had made her feelings clear only to be scolded by Malek. He eyed her now as she watched him with intelligent eyes; somehow she knew an important decision was being made. “He will be our biggest problem now he knows the truth.”
“I will inform the council of our reconciliation and request vacation time to reaffirm our bond.” Delek answered taking control from Sebastian to participate in the decision making. The other Tok’Ra reached over and ran a gentle hand over Louis’s face. “I will be glad when the council recognises us as mates once more but we must think about our third.”
“Our?” Malek asked startled.
Delek smiled, his expression seemingly cheerful but Malek and Louis noted the sadness in his eyes. “Feodore was there when I was not. He listened to you and gave you comfort, he behaved as I should have behaved. I betrayed you, I treated you as if you were beneath me and in doing so I almost lost you. Feodore has proven himself to be a better man and I would be cruel to demand that you choose between us both. But since I cannot let you go again, I must consider sharing. When the council permits we will visit Feodore and discuss our future, together.”
“Thank you Mer Cor.” Malek answered. He raised his own hand to clasp Delek’s. “But I am also to blame for this. Had I tried harder to reconnect with you we would not be in this situation.”
“We were both foolish and our hosts have paid the price.” Delek answered. “And now we must make things right. See to Ocker, I will deal with the council.”
Malek couldn’t deny the awe he felt at Delek’s compassionate display, gone was the arrogant symbiote he had come to know and in its place was a being which had wisdom and compassion. Delek left their room shortly after unaware of Malek’s feelings for him but Nefertari knew, she eyed Delek and made a small curious sound before approaching to rest her head on his knee. “Nefertari, I’ve been a fool and now I must make things right.”
We all do. This is not just on your shoulders. Louis commented. And as displeased as I am, I will never leave you to face the future alone.
-I am glad to have you with me.- Malek answered as he too prepared for the long day ahead before leaving his private chambers with his girl at his side.
Ocker was not hard to find, the male was obviously hanging around nearby to save Malek from Delek should he need to. Malek was pleased to see Ocker’s happiness at having Malek in one piece but he was also concerned as Ocker’s distrust could turn into something worse and dangerous.
“Ocker, this hatred you are developing for our brother must stop.” Malek muttered the moment he was within range. “Delek is no threat and your actions will only cause chaos.”
“He hurt you.”
Malek nodded. “He did and I hurt him in return. What is done is done.”
“I cannot so easily forgive him.” Ocker answered. “Had I known what he’d done…”
“You did not, no one did.” Malek countered. “But if you continue to make an issue of it you could cause major problems. You should know that with the problems we have the last thing we need is an internal dispute.”
“That does not excuse Delek’s behaviour.” Ocker protested before sighing. “I will keep the peace but do not expect me to trust Delek after what I’ve learned.”
“I need you to do better than that.” Malek replied. “If anyone learns the truth there would be an internal feud that could cost us allies and potentially our lives. The last thing we need is to turn brother against brother.”
“So you remain the victim?” Ocker asked with disgust tainting his tone. “You will allow our kin to continue to believe you were delirious and therefore unreliable?”
“He tainted my reputation but my pride is not more important than our people.” Malek retorted. “And right now we are making some very important decisions about our people. What do you think our opponents would do if they found out the truth? All these decisions we’ve made to aid and protect our people would be argued and perhaps rescinded because Delek and I were advocates for those decisions. They will argue that both our judgements are unreliable due to our past experiences and you know as well as I that without those protocols we’ve introduced we would be in grave danger.”
Ocker sighed. “Very well, I will not cause trouble.”
“I suppose that is all I can ask for.” Malek answered knowing Ocker would give no more.
“So what is our task for today?”
“Delek is addressing the council members on base, but since I am not required to be there I will wait to be summoned. You and I can head to my office and deal with the reports that are no doubt piling up.” Ocker groaned with distaste but eventually followed Malek as he turned away to hide a smile at his guard’s behaviour.
Ocker may cause some trouble later.
-Ocker is a symbiote with honour. He will not go back on his word.-
As if to agree Ocker pressed a hand to Malek’s shoulder, a sign of support and companionship, a sign that Malek treasured whenever his friend decided to touch him as a friend and not just a guard. Malek turned to glance at his friend and took comfort in the warm gaze being directed at him. “I’ve been spending too much time away from my post, Ocker. The last thing I want is to distance myself from the people I lead. I must make my presence felt again and remind them that I will listen should they wish to speak to me.”
Ocker nodded. “I thought as much so I’ve been asking around, giving anyone a chance to speak to me or to ask me if they can speak to you. I know there are a few Tok’Ra considering bonding and they would appreciate you being there to make their bond official.”
Malek smiled at the thought. “Contact the chefs and tailors, see what they need and ask for them if they know any Tok’Ra in need of help of any sort. Whilst it is not my duty to see to the basic needs of our people it will encourage their trust in me if they hear my interest.”
“Our brothers and sisters would appreciate any effort you make on their behalf. It has not been so long that our kin have forgotten your kindness and generosity. They will reach out to you when they are ready, but there are many who are nervous and unsure. Since you were believed dead some still feel nervous about trusting you but by reaching out and proving you are the same symbiote as before that trust will return.”
“It is as I suspected then. There will be many who still feel I may be corrupted or replaced, and I do not blame them for I would be suspicious myself. The only thing I can do it prove I am myself by proving it through honest and caring actions. Even then some may not trust me for years to come. I do not want their distrust but I cannot change the past and they are right to be sceptical of me. Hopefully Ari and Caleb will find a way to prove my identity and sanity so that there is no doubt in my kin’s minds.”
“Ari and Caleb will not fail.” Ocker assured.
They do seem quite determined. Louis piped up. I can see why they are so respected.
-They are a very skilled pair and most if not all projects they work upon seem to succeed. It is why I worked to have them on my side. They are highly regarded and their words carry much weight.-
Malek took his seat at his desk the moment he arrived and Ocker took position at the entry way, a sign to other Tok’Ra that he was in his office, hopefully anyone seeking his opinion would know to approach. Until then he had reports to read, but Malek could see that Per’sus was still taking most of his work for him as the reports that were usually littering his desk was piled neatly to the side and Malek could see there was less than he’d usually deal with.
What Malek had not expected was Cosima to enter, her green eyes instantly made Malek feel as if he was being chastised before a smile appeared on her face. “Forgive my intrusion but I wished to speak to you.”
Malek nodded. “Of course, it is my duty to take care of my guests, please take a seat and tell me how I may help.” He stated.
“I know we did not have the best first meetings, but I confess that I’ve watched you closely since our meeting. I’ve noted your interactions with your host and how you’ve dealt with many stresses with Louis as you companion and Abelie and I have come to a decision.” Malek unaware of where this was going simply nodded as he leaned back in his chair and eyed her with concern. “I am not one to gossip, nor do I speak of my problems unless I have to but I feel I can trust you with this.” Cosima continued. “As you’ve no doubt noticed Abelie is beginning to reach the age where I will…” The female paused, swallowing before continuing. “…where I will soon have to let her go.”
Malek had noticed the wrinkles and had heard of how the woman across from him had been tortured by a Goa’uld but he still had no idea as to what the woman wanted. “I am sorry, Cosima, I know how hard it can be to take a new host.”
Cosima nodded clearly grateful for the compassionate words. “Abelie and I have been talking about the end, we know it will be soon, Abelie has been sick for some time and I have struggled to keep death at bay. We have decided to give the Tau’ri a chance. We’ve seen the bond between you and Louis and Samantha and Jolinar and Abelie wants me to have that bond. I was hoping that you might speak to the Tau’ri on my behalf, to request one to consider becoming my host when the time comes.”
Immediately Malek remembered a woman, a nurse who had taken care of him when he was first reunited with his people. –What was her name?-
Victoria. Louis answered. She’s diabetic if I’m viewing your memories correctly.
-That’s right, thank you beloved.- Malek turned his attention back to the waiting Cosima. “There is a Tau’ri who is considering becoming a host. She is a nurse by the name of Victoria. She has an illness which means that her body can’t control the sugar levels in her blood stream without artificial chemicals injected into her body. I think she may be a good host for you, she is shy but very compassionate.”
Cosima looked relieved to see her request was being taken seriously. “Thank you Malek, your answer gives my host and I much hope.”
Malek smiled. “I will speak to the Tau’ri as soon as I am able and see if she’ll agree. If she does I’ll make the arrangements for you to go to Earth or to have her brought here.”
“Thank you.” Cosima answered. “I will leave you to your work.”
“I am glad you came to me with your request. I promise you that I will see to it as soon as possible.” Malek assured with a warm smile. “I will let you know what is happening as soon as I find out myself.” Cosima left with a smile on her face and a bounce in her step, Malek watched her leave with amusement and hoped he would not ruin her happiness should the Tau’ri refuse.
I doubt Victoria will refuse, she expressed an interest and she seemed sincere. We should ask Per’sus if we could contact the SGC and have her sent here to meet Cosima.
-It will be more difficult than that. The Tau’ri government will be suspicious and will not be pleased that their people are becoming hosts without receiving anything in return and there are many who will use such actions as a cause to try and end this treaty before it has even begun. We must tread carefully or our enemies would portray us as if we are Goa’uld, taking hosts as if we are entitled. The first thing we must do is to ensure this treaty is in play, therefore any hosts we take will not be subjected to ridicule nor will our enemies use them as scapegoats for their own goals and fears.-
You are right as always Malek, if we take Victoria now our enemies would use our actions to paint us as the bad guys. If the treaty is in place and we are giving them information they cannot argue our taking host’s because we are living up to our side of the treaty.
-That is correct.- Malek responded, a fond smile on his face. –And the treaty is worded carefully meaning we are not obligated to give over dangerous technology or information. Therefore we protect the innocent people from the greed of those in power without endangering anyone.-
But Earth doesn’t lose out. Louis added. They might not get exactly what they want but with the Tok’Ra on side the information and minor technologies they receive will aid in protecting Earth.
-Precisely.-
“I see you are in deep conversation with Louis.” Delek’s voice penetrated their internal thoughts and Malek turned to the man. “Per’sus and Garshaw were ecstatic to hear that we’ve overcome our differences and have begun the necessary actions to keep our bond official.”
“Once the rest of the council have read the treaty and made their own amendments we will need to return to Earth. I already have one Tok’Ra who would welcome a Tau’ri host.”
“It will not take long. Per’sus and Garshaw are backing the treaty and several other council members leaning towards allowing it, only a few seem against it and they are so few their votes will not count should the majority vote for the treaty.” Delek answered. “Per’sus is also speaking about meeting the Tau’ri himself. In fact I think he wants to meet the General when they come to signing it.”
“Let us hope the treaty goes ahead then.” Malek answered with a smile. “Until then we must wait until we are summoned and I doubt we will be called all that soon.”
“Per’sus has also agreed to give us a few days to ourselves but he insists we take our vacation after this whole treaty business is complete. Since you and Jolinar are the driving force of this whole thing it would be very bad not to have you available when you are needed. Besides the final decision must be made with all council members present, this is a big decision and not something a few council members can decide on for the entire Tok’Ra race.”
“Of course.” Malek agreed readily. “This treaty, if it succeeds will be a life changing decision for both races and it will also be one of the first times the Tok’Ra have trusted anyone but ourselves. We are taking a huge risk with this but I am sure it will pay off in the end.”
“Let us hope the others realise this before they make a decision.” Delek answered. “Although I confess I am not sure what you see in Louis’s people. Still I cannot deny their value, they’ve made quite the impact since joining us out here.”
“Just imagine what we’d be capable of together.” Malek stated. “The Tau’ri are young but the SGC personnel are wise and skilled. Our stealth and their brute force may be the perfect combination to destroy the Goa’uld once and for all.”
“They have certainly had more success in these last few years then we’ve had these last few centuries.” Delek conceded. “Let’s just hope their brute strength is balanced by their intelligence and they do not lead us to our own destruction.”
“Have faith in me, Delek, I have never tried to lead you or my kin astray and I will not do so now. If I suspect foul play I will ensure it is dealt with.”
“I have faith in you, Mer Cor. It is why I am here, supporting you.” Delek answered.
“Thank you.” Malek replied as he turned back to his reports. He picked up a few and slid them over the desk to Delek. “If you help these reports will be done quite quickly.”
Delek laughed. “You are willing to give up office time?”
Malek laughed as well, remembering the many times he would have to be dragged from this very room just to eat and rest. “Well I figure we have a lot of talking to do and we have quite a few years to catch up on.”
“True enough.” Delek agreed. “Perhaps now you can tell me the entire truth, I know you’ve left much out of your story as few knew of Feodore and you have yet to tell me about the ‘hive’ that you and Feodore spoke of.”
Malek startled and realised that yes he had mentioned it but said little more. “Of course, I remember. I will gladly tell you more but I believe those tales should be left untold until we adjourn to somewhere a little more private.”
Isn’t your office private?
-No, I have always had an…- Malek paused briefly to find the right term. –An open door policy. I believe the best way to lead the people is to listen to them so I encourage them to come to me if they need anything done. Normally I deal with bonds, chambers and fights between Tok’Ra when I am not addressing the council. As a result my people know to seek me out when I’m in my office and Ocker’s presence alerts them to the fact that I am here and available.-
So we have to have more private conversations in our chambers?
-Yes. But our conversation can wait until then.- Malek replied as he returned to the data pads. –But since we plan to visit Feodore we can easily introduce Delek to the hive.-
I don’t think we should just dump this on him though, he should have some warning beforehand.
-We have to be careful what we say, Louis. The hive have hidden themselves for a long time and they will not be pleased to be exposed. The Goa’uld have no idea they still exist and we must keep it that way. As much as I would like to trust my kin I am not foolish enough to speak aloud of their existence where anyone can hear, the last thing we want is for gossip to spread.-
But they did say they want to meet the Tok’Ra.
-Yes, but I believe the best thing to do is introduce a few at a time, until we know who has been compromised we cannot trust every single Tok’Ra. I think what we will do is introduce Delek to them and then maybe bring Jolinar, Lantash and perhaps Garshaw and Per’sus if we can persuade them to take the trip without giving too much away.-
That won’t be easy, especially with Per’sus, he cannot excuse himself on rumours and secrets.
-True enough, which is why I am hoping Jolinar and Delek could aid us when they discover the secret I have been hiding this whole time.- In fact Malek was looking forward to the big reveal, he wondered just how Delek would react to their living cousins.
“We’d be done quicker if you actually pay attention.” Delek teased as he noted Malek’s amused smirk. Malek merely raised a brow in response, after all for Delek to notice his inattention Delek himself must not have been paying much attention to the task at hand. Delek laughed and obediently returned to the data in front of him.
Ocker was a silent presence for the most part but Malek could see the guard eyeing the pair and giving Delek a cold stare. If Delek noticed the guard’s distaste of him he made no comment for which Malek was grateful. Ocker noted Malek’s stare and merely acknowledged it with a small nod before turning back to watching the corridor.
“Per’sus and Garshaw have really helped deal with you caseload.” Delek commented. “These reports are mostly announcements of bonds and requests for new chambers. This one here is of more interest, apparently there is an issue going around the base, a chemical that seems immune to symbiote healing.” This earned Malek’s undivided attention but Malek relaxed when he noted Delek did not look too concerned. “It is causing rashes and other allergic reactions but nothing fatal. Ari is trying to find the cause, so far she thinks it is in one of the food items we’ve collected from off-world.”
“I would have thought the food would have been tested beforehand.”
Delek nodded. “Normally it is, but if we’ve been importing a particular item for years we probably did not think to continuously test it. It could be that the product is not yet ready for consumption or is out of date. I am sure Ari will find out, she is quite thorough.”
“Is that everything then?” Malek asked returning to his reports. “Nothing of absolute importance but I will ensure these bonding requests are dealt with soon. I know a few of those wishing to bond with their mates are off base so I will have one of my assistants arrange with the would-be-mates a date to complete the bonding.”
“Your assistants will be pleased to finally be able to do their duties.” Delek answered with a smile.
Malek laughed. “They should thank you for that, if not for the conversation we are going to have I would have chosen to stay here and continue working.”
“Then I will be sure that I get well rewarded for my act of kindness.” Delek retorted.
“Where are my assistants? I have not seen them yet.”
“Per’sus has been utilising them as messengers. I believe Nejir and his host Hugh are on Garshaw’s base and Lina and her host Jessica are working closely with Per’sus and Garshaw. Per’sus was going to return her but he figured you would not mind her being absent for a few more days.”
Malek ran a hand through his hair. “Honestly, I didn’t even notice.”
You are a terrible person. Louis teased. You may just have to beg for forgiveness.
-I do believe you are supposed to be on my side.- Malek countered, Louis merely laughed in response.
“Well it did take you weeks to even give them tasks when they were assigned to you.” Delek replied. “I remember them confiding to Per’sus that they weren’t being given any duties.”
“And then I had Per’sus lecturing me on allowing my assistants to do some of the work so I could rest.” Malek answered with an eye roll. “But I prefer doing much of this work myself. By reading these reports I can learn about the people I am leading and protecting. What sort of leader would I be if I couldn’t even give my people what they need the most?”
“You can’t please them all, Malek and you should not take so much pressure. That’s why I am here, as is Per’sus and your two assistants. Together we keep the place running.”
Malek sighed. “You are right of course.”
Delek smiled. “You are well loved and they all know of your experience. A little while of being off-duty will do no harm, they know that as much as they want you to lead them that you also need time for yourself. Answer me this, how can your people trust you if you are too exhausted to make the right choice?”
Good question.
“You are right.” Malek answered, conceding defeat. “I suppose that is why Per’sus is taking so much of my work still.”
“Yes, since you and I are busy with the treaty between the Tau’ri and us he has decided to take as much of the caseload as he can.” Delek replied. “Garshaw has also been helping him.”
“I will be sorry to see her return to her own base. She has always aided me with her wisdom.” Malek answered.
Delek nodded in agreement. “She does seem to know what to say when the rest of us are divided or unsure.”
“She has a talent.” Malek agreed.
“Who has a talent? Me?” Jolinar asked.
Malek made a sound of joy. “Jolinar, I missed having your company my friend. How have you been?”
Jolinar laughed. “Lantash and I had a few days to ourselves, courtesy of Garshaw and Per’sus, so we could reaffirm our bond but they insisted we return in a few days since Samantha and I can replace you if we need to. Not that I want to replace you, you are doing a fine job, better than anything I could do.”
“I am not so sure.” Malek answered. “But thank you for the compliment.”
“So who has a talent?”
“We were just talking about Garshaw.” Delek answered for him. “We were talking about her wisdom and always knowing what to say.”
Jolinar made a sound of realisation. “Ah. She does always seem to have a wise word for those who choose to listen.” She agreed.
“So what brings you here?” Malek asked with a smile as he finally put down the last data pad. “Is the council being convened to make a final decision?”
“No.” Jolinar answered. “You know as well as I do that the others will drag the decision out.” She added. “And those against the alliance will be speaking out loudly against it in the hopes of manipulating the others into saying no.”
“Let’s hope not, we need this alliance. We have so few hosts available and we find it so difficult to gather supplies that we need this alliance more than the others know. The Tau’ri would offer a secure supply of food, material and perhaps even hosts.”
“I know.” Jolinar stated in reply to Malek’s rant. “But there are a few who don’t care. Some are doing it because they don’t like change, they want to keep our secrecy and independence. There are others who have motives I am not so sure of. Some are trying to gain power by getting as many of their loyal friends on the council as possible by shaming the current councillors, but others may have more serious and dangerous motives.”
“Traitors?” Delek asked with a hushed voice.
“Quiet!” Malek hissed. “We should not be speaking of such things here.”
There was suddenly a solemn atmosphere surrounding them as they felt horror and fear settle in their guts. If there were traitors upon the council then the Tok’Ra were in trouble. If Malek’s protocols didn’t get put into action thanks to the actions of these unknown enemies then it would allow those enemies to increase their numbers and status. But worst of all, if the enemy managed to prevent the alliance then it meant that no one would come to aid them should the enemy succeed.
“Egeria help us.” Delek whispered, verbalising the horror they all felt.
Malek sighed and leaned back in his seat. “It doesn’t matter, we can’t say a thing. Nor should we, but we do need to consider our position in this fight. If there are councillors trying to undermine our decision and therefore prevent progress, we need to start speaking up to encourage our brothers and sisters into agreeing to the decision.”
Jolinar nodded. “Per’sus and Garshaw will certainly demand that the council agree to the protocols, as will Selmak and myself, I am sure Delek will too, as will you. That leaves six others, I think I can persuade a couple of them and Lantash is good friends with a few people in the other bases so he could spread gossip and perhaps manipulate the vote through the Tok’Ra themselves.”
“That won’t help. Re’nal will certainly protest and Milla will definitely make an issue of it.” Delek replied. “The decision hinges on how many we can get to agree which means we have to make the benefits of this alliance as clear as possible.”
“The Tok’Ra need to understand that we need this alliance.” Malek added. “This alliance must come to pass for the Tok’Ra’s survival.”
“Many will agree with Per’sus and Garshaw.” Jolinar stated. “They have some influence over the others and have earned much respect, I am sure many will vote for the alliance simply to remain in favour with the pair.”
“Selmak also has some loyal friends as do we. We simply need to speak to them about the alliance and try to make them understand why it is we want the alliance to go forward.” Delek replied.
“Can you and Lantash deal with that for a time?” Malek asked. “Delek and I have some things to discuss.”
Jolinar glanced between the pair before nodding. “We can do that. I’ll speak to you later.” The tone in her voice told Malek all he needed to know. She would demand the gossip about Malek and Delek, no doubt she would ecstatic to know their bond was being reaffirmed.
“Of course, I look forward to it.” Malek answered honestly. Jolinar left a few moments later leaving Malek with Ocker and Delek. Fortunately Ocker had not left his post at the door and simply turned his back giving the two Tok’Ra some privacy and Malek knew whatever was said would not leave this room via Ocker.
“Will you tell me everything?” Delek asked, his voice hesitant as if he expected Malek to spout denials.
Malek nodded. “Of course, the time for secrecy is over. I believe my tale should be told in full to those I consider my closest friends.” Malek turned to Ocker. “You are welcome to join us, my friend, I would never lie to you. I will tell the others another time.”
Ocker frowned. “This is a private time for you, I should let you catch up.”
To the pairs surprise Delek shook his head. “Whatever Malek knows, you should know as well. You are his first line of defence, his protector, it is your right to know. Come let us head to our private chambers and talk there.”
“I believe I have some good vintage wine, a personal indulgence.” Malek stated.
“It will be just like before. Good company and good drink.” Delek commented with a smile.
And so the trio quickly left the office, Ocker leading the way and the two councillor’s following. Most of their kin were beginning to rest, having evening meal or heading to bed and so the tunnels were mostly empty. Still Malek made it a point of greeting each individual by name and asking after their health before he moved on. It was clear such actions were appreciated as many were smiling and very friendly.
Delek on the other-hand was amused, he had always been rather sceptical about Malek’s more active, friendly measures. The other believed in dictating the actions and intentions of the Tok’Ra but Malek always led by example.
Finally they reached Malek’s chambers where Malek immediately retrieved a bottle of wine and glasses before joining the pair at a small table. “I have to admit my tale will not be able to fully reveal the length of time and effort that went into my returning to the Tok’Ra but I will try to say as much as I can.” He explained as he poured and handed his kin their glasses before taking a sip of his.
“As you recall, I was sent to Ra’s ship where I was betrayed by Thoran and Cordesh. Of course I did not know this, my memory had been damaged by both Ra and the subsequent actions that followed. But the tale is much longer than what I told the council. I was undercover for much longer since Ra wanted to see what he could obtain from me before he exchanged me for a Goa’uld. Those few days I was aboard his ship I had no idea I was sharing a ship with the Goa’uld posing as Thoran. So you can imagine my surprise when I was finally apprehended and brought before Ra, only to see Thoran standing at his side. I don’t remember much of this meeting, I only remember the pain stick and Ra’s demands that I tell him what he wished to know. But I do remember that Thoran was the one to encourage Ra to exchange me for a Goa’uld before encouraging Ra to brainwash me and give me a new host in the hopes that I might spill Tok’Ra secrets. The plan was almost perfect, as Ra had already replaced Thoran with the Goa’uld who now posed as our dead brother, the only difference was that I was not to be killed but kept as a pet.”
Delek shivered. “I’m glad he did not succeed.”
Malek shook his head. “He did not, but my struggles are not the reason I escaped. The Tau’ri saved my life.”
Delek gasped. “How?”
Malek smiled. “They did not save me deliberately, they knew nothing of Tok’Ra back then and barely knew what Goa’uld’s were. In fact their intention was to destroy everything. They created an explosive and managed to get it aboard Ra’s ship.” Malek took another drink as he thought back to that fateful day. “I was in the implantation chamber.” Malek ignored the sharp hisses of his companions and continued looking at his glass. “The Prim’ta’s were all around me, eyeing Misha with greedy eyes and I was too weak to fight them or the Goa’uld holding me ready for the process. Louis joined me then, he too was barely aware of what was happening, he knew only enough to be afraid and he eyed the prim’ta’s with fear knowing they were dangerous. He eyed me, unaware I was a Tok’Ra, he only saw Misha and grew angry on her behalf. But before anything could be said or done there was a massive explosion. Lights flickered, the vessel shook and glass shattered before I felt immeasurable pain.”
“You fell unconscious in a room full of prim’ta’s?” Delek asked with concern.
“Briefly.” Malek answered. “I awoke just in time to prevent a young one from trying to take Misha as a host. But Misha was dying, I could not heal her without the sarcophagus and I would never do this to my host. I was prepared to die, in fact I felt ready for it but then I heard a pained gasp and I saw Louis, far to the side and so far un-noticed by the infant Goa’uld’s. He was alive but in agony and clearly unconscious. Misha begged me then, in her last moments, she pleaded with me to save his life. I refused at first, angry that she would even suggest that I take an unwilling host but then I saw a large Goa’uld notice him and I realised the choice was out of my hands. Either I allow the Goa’uld to claim him or I take him as host and flee. They could not use Misha because I could feel the explosions bombarding the Ha’tak as more and more compartments were destroyed in the wake of the Tau’ri bomb, by the time they had blended with her they would have little time to reach a sarcophagus. So I…” Malek took another few mouthfuls here, not wanting to admit his act but he would not keep secrets from his brothers. “I helped kill Misha, quickly and painlessly. We shared a last moment where we recalled the past and shared our deepest regrets and desires before she passed. Once that was done, I left her and raced towards Louis. I was fortunate since I was not badly injured whereas most of the Goa’uld had been damaged by the glass of their shattered tanks.”
“It must not have been easy, to have an unwilling host.”
“Louis was so angry that once we were safe I offered him a choice, would he allow me to remain as his symbiote or would he rather I die?”
“You what?” Delek asked looking very distressed.
“Louis could not decide so I went dormant. But then, he agreed to be my host. Somehow our short time together helped him realise I was not a threat. He agreed to become my host until I returned to my people, once here I would be removed and he could go back to normal.” Malek did glance at Delek then, laughing as he saw Delek’s horror. “Do not be so upset, Delek, you know how this story turns out.”
“Did Louis not know that removing a symbiote is difficult?”
“My host was not as knowledgeable back then, he seemed to think it was easy despite my warnings that it would not be so simple.” Malek explained. “Unfortunately the Tau’ri decided not to use the gate again and I became trapped on the first world. As you can imagine I spent some time hiding and pretending I did not exist, my host was coming round to accepting my presence but it was slow going and he still wanted me gone for the most part. It was during this time that I learned a lot about the first world, such as their ability to supply huge demands for clothing and food. Admittedly they did not care much for the natural order and overuse natural resources but I witnessed their ingenuity and knew given time and education that they’d become valuable allies. Their leather is particular nice too, they have several methods of production and since our supplies are so rare and difficult to obtain I thought it a useful thing to remember for the future.” He added.
“I will be sure to remember that myself.” Delek agreed. “But how did the gate come to be reused by the Tau’ri?”
“Apophis.” Malek stated. “The Goa’uld found Earth and paid the planet a visit, stealing a woman in the process. Angry the military confronted those who had last used the gate. Back then they thought the gate only dialled one address and the team who had last used the gate were ordered to destroy the other gate on Abydos. As you can imagine this did not happen, mostly because one Tau’ri, Daniel Jackson had chosen to stay on Abydos with his new wife Sha’re.”
“So what happened?”
“The truth is what happened? Unable to maintain the lie Louis and the others were forced to reveal the real story and as a result we were sent back through the gate with the intentions of retrieving Daniel Jackson and destroying the gate. But whilst on the planet Apophis paid a visit, Louis was shot by a Jaffa and I worked to heal the wound. I was fortunate that neither the Jaffa or the Goa’uld noticed my presence, instead they took Sha’re, Daniel Jackson’s wife and her brother. The dead Tau’ri were retrieved and Louis and I were carried by stretcher back to base where we were immediately sent to medical. That was where they discovered me.”
“Uh-oh.”
Malek laughed. “They were not pleased to see me. Louis was suddenly cast under suspicion, no one trusted him because they thought I was controlling him. It took us a long time to earn their trust but what finally succeeded was my act to save a soldier named Kawalsky. Kawalsky is good friends with Jack O’Neill, as is Louis, so by saving Kawalsky I earned Jack’s favour. What happened was this. Kawalsky and Jack along with several others went through the gate using Apophis’s gate address. Stupid I know, but I had no influence over the Tau’ri and they were arrogant enough to think they knew better. Anyway, they went to one of Apophis’s world where they had the great misfortune of running into an army of Jaffa. When they killed a Jaffa the prim’ta in the Jaffa’s pouch jumped host, into Kawalksy. I confronted this Goa’uld and forced it to reveal itself before helping to suppress the Goa’uld. In doing so I earned a group of friends, something that is very useful when so many are contemplating experimenting on you and your host.”
“What?”
Malek merely nodded with a grim expression. “I was interviewed by a man who only saw me as a parasite and not a symbiote despite my host’s explanations and protests. It was clear he wanted me imprisoned and controlled by his government but my new friends stepped up and proved that I was needed on base to protect Kawalsky and to help them in their efforts to protect their world against the Goa’uld.”
“Why didn’t you leave?”
“Louis did not want to leave the Tau’ri and I did not want to paint the Tok’Ra in a bad light. I had promised to help Kawalsky, leaving then would have shown them that I was either a coward or a liar.” Malek explained. “I don’t suppose you want me to go into detail about every mission, so I will go over them as quickly as possible. One of the first places we went is to a planet where sexist clans still existed. These clans did not allow women to show their face or to speak to a man who wasn’t their husband or father and they certainly weren’t allowed to speak in public. We had a female in our group. Samantha. As you can imagine the tribe was not very happy to have a free thinking and talking woman in its midst. She was forced to dress for the occasion and actually kidnapped by the chieftain’s son in the hopes of exchanging her for a woman he had fallen in love with from another tribe. We, that is to say, Daniel Jackson, Jack O’Neill and myself with the aid of the kindly chieftain were able to stage a rescue of both Samantha and the young girl. In fact Samantha ended up saving herself by besting the other chieftain in combat. Something Louis and myself remember vividly.” Malek grinned, then and Louis chuckled as they remembered the wide eyes of the men watching the fight. “Men viewed women as weak so by us claiming that Samantha was our chief, we shocked them greatly but seeing an exotic blonde woman defeat their chief was an even bigger shock. But admittedly it was touch and go, since the fight was a fight to the death Louis was eager to race in and save her but I prevented this warning him that such actions would portray her as weak and get us all killed.”
“I can imagine that.” Sebastian commented. “Samantha seems a rather feisty woman.”
Malek laughed. “You’ve heard nothing yet.” He stated turning his thoughts to the next part of the story. “The mission that followed led us to the Land of Light. There the people were divided by darkness and light. Those living in daylight were healthy men and women but those in the darkness were infected by a disease which turned humans primitive. Fortunately I noted the infection and acted quickly to prevent its spread through Louis’s body. We worked together, Samantha and I, to work out a solution and potential cure to the disease and in doing so we cured not only ourselves by the people affected by the disease.”
“Samantha seems to be a woman who runs the show.”
“She does, doesn’t she? She certainly keeps us on our toes.” Malek agreed. “But she does seem to cause her share of trouble. For example the mission that followed the Land of Light was to a planet known as Anvil. A place where humans had been forced to mine on a planet much closer to the sun then they could handle. Their religious lore stated that their ‘God’ shielded them from the sun but in fact a device installed by the Goa’uld created a shield to protect the colony. The Goa’uld had since died or abandoned this world and the shield had failed. The people had become badly injured by the sun and forced to cower in caves until night fall as the sun was powerful enough to kill in a few short hours. One SGC team had visited this world prior to our visit and their leader had become insane, thinking he was their God. He demanded they worked in sunlight and killed all who defied him. The people were obedient because they believed his promise that he would protect them from the sun. To do this he ended up kidnapping Samantha and trying to manipulate her into helping him trick the people into thinking the shield was his power encasing them all.”
“The fool.” Delek sneered as he retook control from his host.
“Indeed. It did not help that one of the survivors of Jonas’s team hated me. Jonas being the fool who thought he was a God.” Malek explained. “Lieutenant Connor hated what I was and wanted to shoot me but the others stepped in and prevented this, assuring him I was to be trusted. I did not do much this time, I mostly stayed back and watched, the last thing I wanted was to be accidentally exposed and for these primitive people to think I was their new God. Fortunately the team didn’t need help, although half of them did get themselves captured. They overcame Jonas, killing him in the fight but in doing so they showed the people that he was not a God and that as long as they kept the machine running they’d be safe from the sun.”
“The humans seem to be skilled at overcoming immeasurable odds. The fact they’ve survived these encounters with hostile peoples, Goa’uld and disease proves as much.” Delek commented. “But mostly these stories prove their arrogance, that one can become so easily corrupted and the fact that they travel to Goa’uld worlds without precaution proves that they can be dangerous. Still I can see that the Tau’ri have only helped people thus far, so perhaps I have jumped to a harsh conclusion about them and their people.”
“I can assure you that Stargate Command wants nothing but peace, it is the people behind them that cause the trouble. The governments want power and care for little else, still I can’t say they are all evil. And Jack O’Neill is not as crude as you think, he has been quite prepared to pay with his life should he need to, like the one time he was on a planet where the Goa’uld played around with age using nanites. Jack became infected by nanites when he had relations with one woman. There was seemingly no cure and Jack tried to persuade us to leave him. We spent many hours trying to find a cure but since we were not permitted to return to the world we could not help as the real solution was on the planet itself. Fortunately Jack found the power module controlling the nanites and stopped it himself but for a few days we all thought he’d die.”
“And he was ready to face that?”
“He seemed afraid but ready, he would accept death if it came but he’d go fighting.” Malek explained. “He is quite honourable despite his roughness and I am pleased to call him friend. Especially since he protected both myself and Teal’c not a short while later.”
“How?”
“As I told you before, the Asgardian device on another world we visited. I can only presume my initial joining with my host caused the device to view me as evil because it claimed Teal’c and myself. But Jack would not let us go and jumped into the light in the hopes of protecting us. Instead we all ended up in a cave system, a system with an unas. The Goa’uld within this ancient creature saw Teal’c and myself as kin before we told him who we were. Having Jack by our sides was a helpful advantage as only the Tau’ri weapons worked, Teal’c’s staff was deactivated by Asgardian technology. At the end of the cave system we were met by a shield, a shield that only allowed none blended humans through, we used it to kill the Unas and the Goa’uld controlling it. Unfortunately Jack destroyed it so we could leave. If not for him being with us we may not have escaped so easily.”
“Then we owe him a debt.” Ocker stated gravely.
Malek shrugged. “Believe it or not, Jack doesn’t want the glory. To him, he did what he needed to do and that’s that.” He explained. “Jack is highly intelligent but tends to act stupid and lazy. He believes in the simple way of life, shoot the bad guys then go home and get drunk, but he is a skilled warrior and understands more than he lets Samantha and Daniel know. Unfortunately his act is so good that few people look beyond it.”
“He does come across rather rude.” Delek commented, recalling their encounters.
“He can be. He was rather displeased on one particular mission because we ended up on a stormy world with no working gate. It took us all quite a lot of work to supply the gate with enough energy to dial out. On top of that we had a long distance love story where we reunited an old woman with her old crush. Of course the love was barely there as he was mad with loneliness and she had learned to live her life without him. Interestingly enough the planet was also home to a long abandoned meeting place between the ancients, the Asgardians and the Furling. It revealed its secrets to Daniel and Daniel realised the reason these three unique species could communicate is because they learnt to use a common language. DNA and elements as these things make up our universe and are therefore recognised by all species. But this knowledge almost cost Daniel his life, the man was determined to stay to learn more, uncaring that the storm was destroying the building piece by piece. But as you can imagine, we managed to get him away and return to Earth whole and well, if a little stunned.”
“Interesting.” Delek commented, his tone full of honesty. “If only you had recorded such a site for us to see.”
“Daniel did record it, perhaps I can get him to show you his notes next time we see him.” Malek offered.
“I’d appreciate that.” Delek answered. “As would many others. But we can discuss that another time, please tell me more.”
“I had to pose as Goa’uld, once.” Malek continued. “To help rescue Teal’c’s son as the boy was to be punished for his father’s crimes, the abandonment of his God, Apophis, but you know this already and I need not go into detail. All that needs to be said is that we helped rescue the boy but it was much too late. The pouch had already been made and Teal’c seeing no alternative chose to sacrifice his own prim’ta so his son could live. Fortunately Samantha and Daniel had managed to obtain another and saved Teal’c’s life by replacing the lost Goa’uld larvae.”
“I do not like the Jaffa but I acknowledge his self-sacrifice.” Ocker commented. “He sounds like a great father.”
“He is.” Malek agreed. “Anyway, Teal’c returned with us to Earth whilst his wife and child went to a safer world with an old Jaffa and friend named Bra’tac, a Jaffa who helped us in the rescue and had proved to be a wise and cunning leader.” Malek wisely ignored Delek’s snort. “When we returned to Earth I was taken off duty to meet the President, the humans’ leader. The man was very friendly, patient and understanding despite the fear people displayed for me. He listened to my story and actually believed my tale, but I think that was due to many others confirming my story was true. It was he who allowed me to return to duty and encouraged me to find the Tok’Ra so that I may help free Kawalsky from the parasite within him and perhaps create a treaty between our peoples.”
“Which you are trying to do.” Delek added.
“Because we need this as much as they do.” Malek countered. “But my story could have ended there, because whilst I was off duty the team almost got themselves killed. And Daniel was gone. The spoke of flame and death, saying that Daniel was killed but we later learned this was not the case. In fact the team had been brainwashed into thinking Daniel was dead by an aquatic alien life form. This creature had a mate who had travelled to the first world to help the Tau’ri and had been eventually killed by a Goa’uld. The male did not know this at the time and through Daniel he learnt the truth about his mate five thousand years prior. I do not know the entire story as I was not there but I believe Daniel somehow reached the creature’s heart and helped the creature accept his mate’s death.”
“It must still have been difficult.”
“It must have been.” Malek agreed. “I know that Daniel was quite reserved for a while afterwards but I was not able to watch him as I was given my own temporary team and sent to a new world. The world where I met Feodore. Feodore is a Greek, a descendent of the Greeks taken from Earth, and the world was pro-homosexuality. As a result the men we met were quite forward with their interest. It was strange to have them being so friendly at first but I learnt a secret.”
When Malek did not immediately reveal said secret Delek twitched before leaning forward. “Well, what secret?”
“I need your word that what I am about to say will not go beyond this room. I am only telling you because I trust you implicitly.”
“We will not say a word. We promise.” Ocker assured.
“I learnt the truth of our peoples origins. There were not two species but three. The third are called the hive.”
“The hive?” Delek asked?
“I think I heard you mention this name before.” Ocker stated thoughtfully. “They are kin?”
“It is better than even that. They are neither Una’s or symbiotic or parasitic. They live in their own skins and their telepathic. They told me the story of our origins, a story that stunned me. It turns out that they can destroy a parasite with their abilities, it is why they were able to hide for so long, they simply vanished from history. They chose to settle upon Feodore’s world and have been protecting the humans ever since. When they saw me they realised I was different from our ancestors and so they showed themselves to me and spoke to me. I cannot describe the awe I felt. They are very powerful. Powerful enough to remove the Goa’uld in Kawalsky and they want to meet more Tok’Ra in the hopes of reuniting with lost kin. But I am unsure who to trust first, which is why I wish to take only a few at first.”
“You mean you will take us to these people?” Delek asked, his expression showing cautious excitement. “What are they? Who are they?”
“I will tell you the story they told me.” Malek answered. “Back in the beginning there were three species, the Goa’uld, the Unas and the Hive. The Hive were telepaths from the beginning, sharing every experience with each other. Their bodies are pitch black and they are adapted to live in water and on land. The Unas were adapted to live on land and the Goa’uld preferred water. The three species lived in relative peace since each species lived off different food sources there was rarely competition until something happened. The Hive called it the Great Mourning where there were many deaths. The Goa’uld began to die of deformities and disease. Since The Hive and Unas were unaffected the Goa’uld believed the other two species were the cause of this disaster and thus declared war. It was a slaughter, with the Goa’uld at the losing end. The Goa’uld eventually became the species we recognise today as the only cure seemed to be leeching life from another body and so the Unas became the Goa’uld’s first victims.”
“We know some of this story. But what part did the hive have to play?”
“They saved as many as they could, but they were more fortunate with the Unas as they did not understand what was killing the Goa’uld, they only knew that it was a disease that ate away at their bodies, killing them from within. The Goa’uld ignored the fact that the Hive were trying to save them and actually captured and tortured both Unas and hive members. By attacking even one individual the Goa’uld had declared war with the entire Hive and so the Hive stopped helping, their abilities prevented Goa’uld from claiming hive hosts and so the Goa’uld focused their attention on the Unas. The Hive interfered saving many Unas and taking them to distant worlds with the aid of the ancients. After this the Hive hid, only hearing rumours of Ra and his kin, they have not seen a relative since they met me.”
“What do they look like?” Ocker asked.
“I am not spoiling the surprise.” Malek teased. “But whatever you’re thinking is wrong. You will not believe your eyes when you finally see them, if they allow you to see them.”
“You think they won’t.”
“They are used to hiding, they will not reveal themselves immediately until they are sure they can trust those I’ve brought with me. I feel that since they’ve spent so much time hiding that it is not my place to reveal their existence to our people as a whole, it will be their choice. But they have asked to meet more Tok’Ra so I will take those I trust most to meet them and perhaps it will encourage them to consider reaching out to our people as a whole.”
“They sound like useful allies, but many will be wary that they read minds.”
“True.” Delek agreed. “But think about it. If we have but one Hive member near us, just think of how quickly it could detect a Goa’uld. The Tok’Ra may never need fear again and if they are as powerful as Malek claims then they could be powerful allies to have.”
“I do not think they will be eager to fight.” Malek warned.
“Maybe not.” Delek conceded. “But what about people like Cecilio with his sarcophagi addiction? The Hive may be able to help with such things.”
“We could ask at least.” Malek agreed. “Shall I continue with my story?”
Ocker, who had helped himself to more wine, leaned back and smiled at Malek. “Please do. I am interested in hearing what adventures you went through to get home.”
“Okay, well one adventure got me and Louis cloned.” Malek stated. “I have to say that is one of my most memorable experiences. One clone couldn’t handle both our minds so Clone Malek unintentionally killed his host. To fix this the man cloning us, Harlan, cloned another Louis, but this time managing to shield my mind in the process so I was not cloned with them. It was a strange and saddening experience. It was interesting to listen to the other Malek’s point of view, to imagine having a body of my own but I would never give up my hosts and I was saddened that that Malek could not continue to feel the joy and comfort of a host mind.”
“I could not imagine a life without my host. This clone, he may not be you but I feel sympathy for his situation.” Ocker commented. “But at the same time I cannot say I am happy with knowing that there is a clone of you out there. That is a potential security breach.”
Malek shook his head. “I assure you Ocker that that Malek is just like me and he will not give away any secrets should he be captured by a Goa’uld. But that is unlikely as the world I was cloned on was free of the Goa’uld long before our arrival. Harlan was an clone himself, made to sustain the city once full of people. The only reason he cloned us was because he was lonely and needed help. There was a violation but one I have long since forgiven. I cannot imagine being forced to live alone for so long. Harlan needed the company and such an ancient city deserved to be preserved.”
“You are too forgiving.” Delek chided ignoring Ocker’s resulting glare.
“Perhaps.” Malek conceded. “But that does not make me weak. I am still quite capable of making tough decisions. In fact I made one such decision not much later after this mission. The program was shut down by a human obsessed with a fictional God. He believed some invisible deity would protect Earth from the Goa’uld and so he made a decision to end off world exploration. SG1 and myself left the planet against orders to prevent a Goa’uld invasion. Whilst defying orders we came across Gete, Aldwin and two other Tok’Ra. I informed him of my identity and encouraged him to flee as we planned to destroy the ha’tak’s. The three of them helped us with our plans but the two Tok’Ra fell covering our escape leaving only Gete to return to base whilst I returned to the Tau’ri.”
“Why not return then?”
Malek sighed. “I felt I couldn’t. My instincts told me that there was something wrong. I felt there was a traitor though I did not know how I knew. I guess it was my memories emerging from the brainwashing. But I warned Gete not to tell anyone and seeing as you knew nothing of my ploy when I returned I must assume he told no one.”
“Gete is a man of his word and Aldwin would also have kept his silence.” Ocker agreed.
“There is not much story left to tell after this. The only thing left to tell you is my reunion with Jolinar, who took Samantha as a host. As you can imagine the Tau’ri were still rather fearful of us despite me earning their trust and Jolinar had to undergo a few interrogations and examinations. It was she who helped me understand the circumstances that led to my situation but she knew more than I. She knew there was more than one traitor and she knew what had happened through deductions and Intel she had gathered. It was her plan for us to return to the Tok’Ra undercover, to pretend the traitors had succeeded in killing the both of us. Our plan was simple and succeeded despite the obvious hiccups. We confronted both traitors, exposing the treachery that would have killed us. Admittedly it took us time to pluck up the courage to perform our parts as we were not keen on lying to you and the others but we knew that had Thoran known we were coming he would have created a credible excuse or lie to evade our accusations and questions.” Malek sighed. “Forgive me, I should not call him Thoran for he was not our brother and our brothers memory should not be sullied by that creatures actions.”
“You’ve been through much and I can understand the need for the deception.” Delek answered. “Admittedly I am upset you felt you could not even trust one of us but I now know your reasons and I can accept them.”
“I too agree with what you’ve said. I understand why you need secrecy but I am glad you’ve trusted us now to reveal the truth.” Ocker replied. “But Egeria forbid, if there is another situation like this, maybe next time you can trust us.”
“I should have trusted you to begin with.” Malek answered. “But I was unsure how many were corrupted by Thoran and Cordesh. In all honesty will still do not know who is friend or foe, which is these new protocols are so important. They may help us in preventing more traitors and infiltrators.”
“Support does seem to be growing for these protocols. I know many are impressed by your healers work.” Delek answered. “In fact I believe I heard Garshaw talking to Cosima about taking notes so that the healer could take your peoples work to other bases.”
Malek smiled. “This is good news. Perhaps this is a sign that a decision about the protocols and treaty are ready to be made.”
Delek sighed. “It does seem an open and shut case. The answer should be obvious but many will drag the decision out so they can work out if and how it benefits them.”
Malek made a disgusted noise. “Councillors should not be thinking of themselves. We are given our positions to help lead and protect our people, any decision that protects, heals and improves our way of life should be given a fair chance. It sickens me that some of our kin are only making choices that benefit them.”
“We all are but we cannot alienate kin, if we were to act against our kin with no proof we risk causing a divide. The last thing we want it a rebel group leaving us. We are so few in number that such a loss would be devastating.” Delek answered.
“But there must be something you can do.” Ocker asked.
“There is little to do but lay in wait. Liars always slip up, we only need to make sure that there are witnesses to catch it.” Delek answered.
“There will be subtleties, clues to their true intentions, if we collect these we can eventually find a way to expose those who want only power and have no interest in protecting the Tok’Ra.” Malek added. “That is all we can do. That is all we must do. Anything else and we could have our plan turned on us. If we are not careful our enemies would show us as traitors and liars, so we must move cautiously, any wrong move and we lose everything.”
“Besides these greedy fools have been on the council for centuries, a few more weeks, months, years or even decades will not do irreparable harm. We can afford to wait.”
Malek laughed. “You know, this reminds me of the time we spent in Cronus’s court.”
Delek raised a brow. “Really?” He asked before his eyes glittered with realisation. “We had such fun, didn’t we?”
Malek nodded. “That we did.”
Ocker raised a brow as both men laughed. “Do I want to know?”
Malek grinned. “Not really. Let’s just say we never got bored.”
“Explain!” Ocker pleaded.
Malek took pity on his friend. “A few centuries ago Delek and I were given a mission to gather Intel about Cronus and his minions. Cronus was spending a short period on one of his underlings worlds, a rather primitive planet. The Underling in question was rather paranoid and had a thing about pests. So Delek and I spent many weeks tormenting the Goa’uld with all manner of creatures.”
“Cronus was being rather cautious about us, you see. We were newcomers that he didn’t entirely trust.” Delek explained. “We needed to earn his favour so we made his underling look paranoid and fearful. What we had not counted on was that in his fear the underling would go to attack Cronus.”
“He didn’t attack Cronus, he swatted at a fly.”
“That was hovering near Cronus’s face.” Delek countered. “Anyway, Malek, the hero rushed forward and stopped the attack and I restrained the underling. Our actions showed Cronus that we were ready to rush to his defence and so we earned his favour.”
“It did take a while though. It was not easy to rile that underling up.” Malek stated.
“We had all the time we needed. In fact we completed the mission faster than the time given to us.” Delek answered.
Ocker raised a brow again. “So you spent weeks tormenting a Goa’uld with bugs.”
Malek made a sound of mock protest. “Do you know how much time and effort it takes to encourage an insect to build its nest in a ha’tak? My poor host got stung many times and we were sick for many days afterwards.”
Delek laughed. “I had to make excuses to explain why Lord Bennu was not available.”
“You had way too much fun with that.”
Delek just shrugged. “It was better to have Cronus think you had a very insatiable appetite for young virgins than to begin questioning who or where you were. Besides you did spend too long with that young little thing. Anna, was that her name?”
“I was helping her. She got her dress stuck.” Malek protested with a smile.
“She was coming on to you and you were encouraging her.”
“Well she was rather pretty.”
Ocker laughed at the banter and placed his empty glass on the table. He eyed Delek for a few moments before making a decision and rising to his feet. “I’m going to head back to my chambers. Try not to drive each other mad.”
Malek chuckled. “Don’t worry, Louis will keep me in check.”
“Let’s hope so.” Delek replied teasingly.
I am happy to see you getting along so well again. Louis commented. And I cannot wait for Delek to meet the Hive.
-Neither can I.- Malek noted Delek had switched control back to Sebastian. –I think I will rest now, beloved host. Perhaps it is time for you to spend time with Sebastian.-
I would not know what to say.
-Just be yourself beloved.-
Alright. Malek, before you rest there is one thing I want to say. Louis stated. I was wrong for becoming so angry, I know what hurt and anger can make a person do. You are not to blame, you thought the relationship over so starting a new one was not wrong. I was just shocked that you and Delek were still classed as bonded. I did not know that bonds lasted so long before being annulled. I am not happy, but I don’t blame or hate you. I just pray that this mess is sorted out quickly.
-Thank you for your understanding, Mer Cor. It brings me much peace to know you are not angry with me. Rest assured I will correct my mistakes soon, you will not suffer the backlash of my cruel actions.- Malek settled against his host’s spine, content and relaxed now he knew his host was not as angry as he thought. –Go spend time with Sebastian. I will sleep, I need the rest. But should you need me, just reach for me, Beloved.-
I will do. Rest now, Malek. Worry about the council later.
-Good plan-
Malek stayed awake long enough to see Sebastian reassure and comfort Louis before he dosed off. His dreams were full of hope for the future.
