“What is happening is a measure of insecurity.” Caleb was explaining to the council. “A large number of Tok’Ra who have experienced distress and injuries at Goa’uld hand’s fear these tests because they think they will be judged badly because of their experiences.” The healer gave every council member a stern glare. “The secrecy we live by has become a curse because we now keep secrets from each other. Our agents have to endure much pain and suffering and we have never tried to reassure or treat them. They come home and are sent back out again without proper medical care and psychiatric treatment. As a result our negligence has cost many agents and their trust in us is now severely damaged.”
“We are grateful that Malek has insisted these protocols become vital. It has allowed us to address the issues affecting our people.” Ari added. “Since we’ve begun working we’ve healed several long term injuries, injuries the agents hid because they were used to not receiving aid. We have also addressed several circumstances of drug and sarcophagi addiction. Healer Cosima has been absolutely vital in our work for she has taken much of our caseload so that we may begin to earn the trust and friendship of the people we are meant to heal and protect.” She turned then to Malek. “I cannot thank you enough for bringing this matter to our attention, these protocols have done more than given me and my people work, it has also helped heal the psychological and physical damage that our kin should never have had to endure. Our duty as healers was always to help our brothers and sisters, the fact that our kin returned and did not seek us out or expect us to help them is deeply saddening but thanks to you we can now work to rebuild that trust.”
Caleb smiled towards Malek. “I know I have little authority here but I beg the council to make these protocols a key part of Tok’Ra life. These past few weeks they have saved many lives and they have also helped improve the function of this base. If you spend just a few days here you will notice that trust between the Tok’Ra have improved. Thanks to our work our brothers and sisters know that no imposter is on base and they feel safe in these walls because they know that the healers and guards are focused on one duty, protecting and healing our people.”
“I too recommend that the protocols become law for our people. We have benefitted from just a few weeks of work, just imagine what years could achieve!” The excitement in Ari’s voice had most councillors smiling and Malek knew then that he had succeeded. Delek too knew they had won as he pressed his leg to Malek’s and smiled proudly when Malek glanced at him.
Kish’ta stepped forward then at the bequest of Per’sus. “I too can only sing praises for these protocols. I have noticed many a time that my guards and I are not as trusted as we would have hoped. The people under our care lost faith in authority. I failed at my job to protect them when they needed me most and if not for Malek’s protocols I will still be ignorant of their needs.” The Head Guard put down a large pile of pads, one for each councillor, which were quickly handed out. “Upon these pads are the reports I have gathered since these protocols have been enacted. But most importantly there are reviews from a huge range of Tok’Ra. You will see responses from tailors, chefs, guards, medics, agents and the councillors who have remained on base during this test. As you may also notice Malek’s views are not included as he would be biased. As you can see Malek had no influence on the results but there is no doubting the success of these protocols. These protocols have ensured our people trust one another again, it has also ensured that those given the task of protecting our people are able to do so because our brothers and sisters are no longer afraid of approaching us.”
Per’sus clapped his hands. “Bravo! I am proud to say these protocols have been a success and I am glad it has improved relations between our people and us. So let us begin the vote. Who votes for the protocols to become law?” Malek was astounded when almost all hands rose. Per’sus nodded. “Who votes against these protocols?” Two raised their hands. Per’sus acknowledged them before turning to address the whole council. “I as Head Councillor hereby dictate that all bases are to enact the protocols. All Tok’Ra shall undergo physical and psychological tests to ensure their health and their identity. Any who protest shall be contained and interrogated or treated depending on the circumstances involved.”
The cheer that rose at the words warmed Malek’s heart and Malek did not hide his smile as Per’sus turned to him and encouraged him to speak. Malek turned his attention to the council. “Our next discussion is to do with the potential alliance we could create with the Tau’ri. But before we begin the vote I wish to say a little more about why I think we should agree to the alliance, if you would allow me this opportunity.”
“I am interested in what you have to say, brother.” Selmak stated.
Again the voices rose, each agreeing that Malek should have his say. Malek acknowledged all of them and began to speak. “I have spent the past few weeks considering why this treaty is so important and the reasons for the treaty have piled up. I do not want to bore you with all the details as I am sure you have thought deeply about this as well but I must ask you to consider these few thoughts I will expose to you now. The first thought I had was by far the simplest. If we had an ally, we would have somewhere relative safe to go if we need a haven, but more importantly we have supplies. Food, clothing and perhaps even hosts given time and trust. But the second thought I have is by far the more important.” Malek turned and met the eyes of each and every councillor. “Indulge me for one moment if you will by imagining a worst case scenario. The Goa’uld have successfully infiltrated our bases, perhaps even become a councillor or an advisor to a councillor. Now tell me, should the Goa’uld succeed in infiltrating and destroying us and our base, who will the survivors turn to? Where could they go? Would anyone notice us missing?” The gravity of the idea was felt in the very air, each councillor seemed fearful at the thought which was what Malek was after. “Now imagine for me that we have created an alliance with the Tau’ri, We keep in contact with the humans regularly enough to strengthen the alliance and trust between our peoples. Now imagine again that the Goa’uld have successfully infiltrated our number. Now we have a friend, allies who know something is wrong or come to seek us out because we’ve not been in touch.” Malek sighed and leaned back in his seat. “Forgive me for painting a grim picture but can you see now why an alliance may do us some good. If the worst case scenario does happen, we will have friends to turn to or friends that will seek us out if they need us or feel something is wrong.”
Per’sus nodded. “Perhaps you are right. We are so determined to keep ourselves secret that we have become secluded and trapped by our own ideals. Should something terrible happen there will be few who would look for us. I thank you for your opinion, Malek, it has given us one last thing to consider before we make this vote. I ask that the council remain in silence for a few moments to consider the gravity of this before we made a decision.”
This looks hopeful. Louis commented as he took in the grave expressions of many of the faces around them. Perhaps by hearing the worst case scenario they will realise that this alliance is good for us all.
-One can only hope. - Malek answered.
They watched the expressions of their kin and were watched in return as hosts and symbiotes discussed their choices and guessed the thoughts of their fellow councillors. Even Jolinar looked to be in deep thought, her beautiful face changing as they considered the pros and cons of the alliance.
Finally Per’sus straightened his posture and instantly all eyes were on him. “Does anyone need more time?”
“No. We are ready to make a choice.” Garshaw replied on the council’s behalf after she eyed the expressions of each individual.
Per’sus nodded. “Those who vote for the alliance.” Malek raised his hand as did Delek and Jolinar. Selmak followed shortly after, as did Garshaw. But then slowly more hands rose and Malek felt hope that this vote would turn out well. Per’sus kept his expression neutral. “Those who vote against.” Again hands rose, but Malek was pleasantly surprised to see that only a few individuals had raised their hands. Per’sus nodded. “This leaves just my vote.” He eyed every single councillor. “I vote for the alliance.”
“Then it is settled.” Garshaw stated. “A treaty will be made between our peoples.”
Many cheered ignoring the angry and sulking expressions of the few. Per’sus smiled. “Congratulations Malek. I hereby allow you to return to the Tau’ri with the treaty.” He instructed as he handed Malek a pad, a very familiar pad. “You worded the treaty well and none had any protests when we reviewed it. We were pleased to know that this alliance would be a balanced one and that you headed off any attempt by the Tau’ri at getting more technology then we could or wanted to offer. As long as the Tau’ri are happy, we are pleased to agree to this alliance.”
“When the time comes to make the alliance official we shall allow the Tau’ri to pick a neutral and safe place to complete an official signing of the treaty. Until then you and Jolinar shall act as our messengers between the council and the Tau’ri authorities.” Garshaw added.
“Before we adjourn this meeting, there is one last thing to address.” Per’sus stated. “Since Thoran is now lost we have an empty seat on the council. Soon we must replace him and I will leave it to each of you to offer names of Tok’Ra who would make good councillors. Due to Malek’s success the council will now undergo extensive psychological and physical tests.” A few protested but stopped quickly when Per’sus pinned them with a glare. “All Tok’Ra are to undergo these tests and the council will set an example by going first. I trust that no one here is a Goa’uld or addicted to a sarcophagi but these tests will ensure our brethren that we are who we say we are. The new member will also have to agree to these tests so choose wisely.”
“Any more questions?”
At the silence Per’sus nodded. “Then this meeting is adjourned.”
What Malek had not expected was for Anise, Re’Nal and Garshaw to immediately swarm him. He stared wide eyed as all three congratulated him on his success and bombarded him with questions. Malek regained his mind and smiled gratefully to the woman. “Thank you all for your support.”
Re’Nal nodded. “Your protocols have merit and considering how few of us there are now, we cannot afford to lose any more people. I have kept up to date with your protocols and have seen their success first hand. You were right to insist they be made law. They will only benefit our people. I am, however, rather sceptical about this treaty but you have not led us astray. I will remain neutral about this decision for now.”
Anise shook her head at Re’Nal. “Malek is right, Re’Nal, we need friends, people we can trust. If anything should happen we need to know we have someone to turn to. As safe as we are alone, we will die alone. Even if we never use the Tau’ri’s aid, at least we can be sure that someone remembers we exist.”
Garshaw nodded. “The Goa’uld are trying to remove us from existence. They outlive humans and so they can easily manage this task. Jaffa and humans will forget we exist and the Goa’uld will never acknowledge us. By creating this treaty, we at least ensure they we leave some kind of legacy. Perhaps when the Goa’uld are defeated the Tau’ri will remember us and the fight we have fought and continue to fight for the freedom of humanity.”
Anise nodded as well. “Garshaw is right. If the Goa’uld succeed in killing us all off, at least one race will remember who we are and what we have tried to achieve.”
Re’Nal sighed. “You are right, of course, but these Tau’ri are dangerous and this treaty could prove to be detrimental to the survival of our people. I will reserve judgement for now, simply because I am unsure if this was the best course of action. Still I respect you for what you have achieved Malek, you have done well today. You words were heard and understood. Everyone here knows the cost should we or this alliance fail.”
“I pray we never find out what would happen in a worst case scenario.” Malek commented.
“But we must always prepare for that worst case scenario.” Re’Nal countered. “Should you ever visit my base with the Tau’ri, please pay a visit, I would like to see our new friends with my own eyes somewhere in the near future.”
“Why don’t you come with us?” Delek asked.
Re’Nal shook her head. “I will be required on base to monitor the progress of these new protocols. I do not doubt their success as long as they are introduced by skilled and trusted Tok’Ra but I must be there to supply a more neutral view of the whole affair. But please do get in touch, I am intrigued and eager to know more.”
They watched the woman leave with wide eyes and Delek made a sound. “That was strange.”
Malek laughed. “I thought for sure that she would be one of our opponents.”
“Perhaps Re’Nal is not as stubborn as we anticipated?” Delek asked.
“No, she is stubborn but she understands the seriousness of the situation.” Jolinar stated as she joined them. “I am glad that so many agreed with what we are trying to achieve. One can only hope that our people flourish under these new protocols and this new friendship with the Tau’ri.”
Malek smiled before placing a hand on Delek’s shoulder. “Inform Per’sus that you and I will be leaving to deliver the good news to the Tau’ri before heading on vacation. And make sure he knows that we are taking Ocker and Cosima with us.”
Delek raised a brow. “Cosima?”
Malek nodded. “The healer has made it known to me that she is interested in a Tau’ri host and I have a female human in mind who has already told me that she’d gladly be a host. I think it only fair that the both of them meet.”
Delek smiled. “A good idea, I will go inform Per’sus.”
Malek searched for Ocker and grinned as he spotted the dark skinned host leaning against a wall just outside of the council chambers. “Ocker, could you go find Cosima, she will be accompanying us to the Tau’ri homeworld.”
Ocker nodded. “A wise plan, my friend, I will return shortly.”
Things are going well. Louis commented. I am really proud of you, Malek, you’ve helped unite our people. I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
-I am excited too, beloved. Let us hope this alliance brings hope and fortune to the Tok’Ra cause.-
Malek glanced at Jolinar and Anise as both joined him as he returned to his office. Neither woman spoke, but that was to be expected. Even though a decision had been made it would be unwise to gossip until the process of change had begun. Malek doubted any of his Tok’Ra underlings would protest the change but there were others who might protest and challenge those involved with the decision.
Still Jolinar barely waited until they were in more private settings before squealing and jumping on Malek. Such childish joy had Malek laughing as he caught her. “This is wonderful!”
“What is so wonderful that the two of you must embrace?” A voice demanded. Fortunately both Tok’Ra knew the speaker was not angry as they knew Lantash’s vocal tones and this tone was full of amusement.
Jolinar released her hold on Malek and Malek let he go so she could jump on her mate. “The council have made the decision to ally with the Tau’ri. Our people are now in this together!”
Lantash smiled. “This is wonderful news. Perhaps when the alliance is set in place we can visit your host’s world and enjoy the pleasures Samantha has grown up with.” Jolinar giggled, pressing a kiss to Lantash’s lips before getting to her feet.
Malek shared an amused glance with Anise before taking a seat and indicating for the others to do the same. “The council have indeed agreed to make the protocols lore and have also agreed to the alliance.”
“Your speech was quite convincing.” Anise answered. “I have to confess you apparent loyalty to the Tau’ri has given me hope that we may have found a valuable ally.”
“I hope I can prove that your faith in me is not misplaced.” Malek answered.
Lantash snorted. “You need do no such thing. You have proven your worth time and time again. Any who mistrust you now will never trust you.”
“Anyone who doesn’t trust Malek is not someone to be trusted.” Jolinar retorted. “Malek is the most loyal of us, I will not tolerate any disrespect to him or his hosts.”
Malek smiled in gratitude. “Your loyalty honours me Jolinar.”
Jolinar returned his smile. “I have always been loyal to you, my friend, just as you have always been loyal to me and everyone else.”
“I hear you are heading to the Tau’ri homeworld and are allowing me to accompany you.” Malek glanced up and smiled warmly as he noted Ocker and Cosima. Cosima smiled hesitantly in return. “I apologise if I have interrupted anything of importance.”
Malek shook his head. “You’ve interrupted nothing. Please join us, I am just waiting for Delek to return before I make my plans clear.”
Jolinar raised a brow. “Plans?”
“Malek, Ocker, Cosima and myself are heading to the Tau’ri homeworld to give the Tau’ri the good news. Per’sus has actually suggested you accompany us, Lantash, Jolinar.” Delek stated as he appeared not a moment later.
“Forgive my rudeness but what is going on?” Jolinar asked. “Is there something we do not know?”
Malek laughed at her suspicions. “Of course not, you know I would not keep anything from you. And I am sure you’ve already told Lantash a lot about our shared adventures.” Jolinar smirked confirming Malek’s theory that she had told Lantash everything. Malek grinned. “What you do not know is that our guest, Cosima here is reaching that time when she must seek a new host and I hope to give her a Tau’ri host since she has expressed an interest in a Tau’ri host. I have a female human in mind and have decided for Cosima to accompany us so she can meet Victoria.”
Jolinar nodded. “A good idea.” She agreed before turning to Cosima. “Forgive my outburst, I did not intend to cause offence.”
Cosima shook her head with a smile. “No offence was taken. I am just thankful Malek is helping me. I hope I can return the favour in the future.”
Malek shook his head. “We are kin, there are no debts owed here.” He stated firmly. “Now since we all know we are heading to the Tau’ri homeworld may I ask if anyone has anything they need to do?” Everyone shook their heads. “Since there are no obligations to be anywhere else, shall we arrange to meet at the chaapa’ai in a couple of hours? Say two hours?”
“I’ll be ready in one hour.” Jolinar stated.
When Malek glanced around, he saw everyone agreed with the one hour. “Very well, in one hour I will meet you all at the Chaapa’ai.”
“Is there anything I need bring?” Cosima asked.
Malek shook his head. “The female I think will be your future host will want knowledge and friendship, nothing more. If you wish to show her things that interest you and your host, please do so but do not worry about buying gifts to impress her, just be yourself.”
Cosima nodded. “Thank you.”
Malek shook his head once more. “No, thank you for trusting me.” At that moment the pair shared a look and Malek knew that he had earned the loyalty of another sister. “I hope Victoria proves to be a wonderful host for you, should she choose to accept.”
“I look forward to meeting her.” Cosima agreed. “My host and I will see you in one hour.”
Malek, Ocker and Delek watched as the others left to prepare their things before Delek turned to Ocker. “Ocker. could you please leave us?” Ocker glanced between the pair of them and slowly nodded. “Thank you.” Delek replied before Malek’s guard disappeared from sight.
Malek raised a brow as Delek turned to him. “You want to talk?”
Delek sighed. “I am concerned.” He admitted. “Ocker dislikes me now and his presence may make it difficult for us to deal with our third.”
Malek frowned. “You don’t want him to come? You do know it is his duty to protect me at all costs.”
Delek shook his head. “No, I want him to come but…” The Tok’Ra tensed and Malek watched as the man’s expression changed indicating Sebastian had taken control. The host met Malek’s gaze. “We are afraid Ocker might hinder or ruin any chances of reconciliation. I know we do not deserve a chance, but you’ve given us a chance to make things right and we do not want anything to go wrong. We want to prove we are worthy of your affections.”
Malek chuckled as he rose to his feet, in a few moments he stood before the seated Tok’Ra and pressed a hand to the other man’s cheek. “You need never be afraid of that. Ocker has no say about my feelings, I’ve loved you for over a century, despite our unfortunate pasts and I will continue to care deeply for you. I only pray Feodore understands my feelings for all of you and accepts the idea of being our third.”
Sebastian smiled. “I hope we can find a way to love one another, I personally can appreciate Feodore’s physique but I certainly hope I can fall for his personality. Anyone who brought you happiness is worth a chance.” He raised his own hand to clasp Malek’s. “Thank you for forgiving us.”
“Thank you for putting up with my arrogance.” Malek answered softly.
Delek took control then, a smirk appeared and Malek chuckled as Delek rose to his feet. “It is only fair, Mer Cor, you do put up with me after all.” The male retorted as he wrapped arms around Malek’s waist and held his mate close.
Malek returned the embrace, hiding an amused smirk against Delek’s shoulder. “I do deserve some reward.”
Delek chuckled. “I’m sure I can give you whatever you desire.”
Malek made a sound of contemplation and slowly leaned back to meet Delek’s gaze. “I know exactly what you can do for me.” He stated, Louis knowing what was coming roared with laughter in his mind and Malek struggled to keep a straight face. “You could spend time with Daniel Jackson and answer some of his questions. He has been dying to sit down and talk with a Tok’Ra.”
Delek made a face. “Can’t we send Anise?”
“She will spend most of her time deciding what man to have fun with!” Malek answered. “Besides you and Daniel should get to know each other, after all I want you to get to know all my friends.”
Delek made a face before noticing Malek’s twitching lips. “I suppose you want me to socialise with the others?”
Malek raised a brow, feigning innocence. “Jack would love to get to know you.”
“I’m sure.” Delek replied. “You are such a torment, my mate. Louis has been good for you.”
Hey! Why do I always get the blame? Louis protested, though his amused laughter indicated that he was not at all offended.
-I hid my humour well, beloved. - Malek answered. –Perhaps too well.-
“We must prepare.” Delek stated. “We have a journey to make.”
“You are right.” Malek agreed but inwardly he was saddened that he could not spend time reconciling with Delek. The pair still had much to discuss but they did not have time for personal matters, at least not yet. “And I best leave Nefertari here, the humans will not accept her as readily as our kin have.”
“Perhaps leave her in the care of Anise, I am sure the scientist would love to have such a unique and beautiful creature in her care. And Anise will bring no harm to your pet, she would not hurt you in such a way.”
“You have a good idea. I will go find Anise and ask her.” Malek agreed. He went to do just this, but Delek’s arms remained firm keeping Malek pinned against his body. Malek sighed in amusement. “To do so, you must let me go.”
“I don’t wish to let go yet, I want to enjoy this moment. I know we will not have much time to spend together in the near future.” Delek admitted.
Malek nodded. “I know, Mer Cor, but we will have a lot of time in the future to cement our bond.” He reassured. “If we don’t leave soon, the others will come looking for us.”
Delek sighed before reluctantly releasing his mate. “Let’s go give Tau’ri the good news.”
“It is indeed good news.” Malek agreed, joy plain to be heard in his voice. “I will go and speak to Anise about caring for our girl. You should make sure everything is in order.”
“It will not take me long to do so.” Delek answered. Malek startled as Delek leaned down to kiss him, but he soon returned it, eager to share any intimacy with his mate. “I will see you later, Mer Cor.”
Malek smiled as the man walked away. -To think I almost lost this permanently. -
You symbiotes are so full of pride that you ignore how much you hurt or ignore others. It is why you should always listen to your hosts. Louis chided. Give me control. I fancy taking command.
-With pleasure, my heart. – Malek agreed readily, releasing control within seconds and relaxing against Louis’s spine. -You are my equal, you know what must be done. I trust you implicitly, beloved. –
Your trust is not misplaced. Louis assured as he bent down to give Nefertari a gentle pat before rising back to his full height and leading the cat hybrid towards the labs.
Anise was there, as predicted, but the moment she noticed Nefertari her attention did not waver. In fact, excitement was plain on her face as she cautiously approached. Nefertari sniffed her and allowed her to pet her head, a surprising gesture since Nefertari did not seem to like to many people, Delek included. It was a sure sign that Anise would be the perfect one to care for their newfound companion.
Louis smiled at the pair as Anise rambled excitedly about finding out the species and learning about their anatomy, behaviour and quirks, all the while stroking Nefertari’s belly as the cat-hybrid rolled around behaving extremely docile considering the cat was wild. “Would you like to look after Nefertari for a while?” Louis cringed as his eardrums all but shattered at the screech released by the female. Once Malek stopped the ache to their ears Louis relaxed, laughing as Anise and Freya switched control to thank him and beg him that this was not a cruel joke. “We are heading back to Earth and my people will not be as tolerant of her as the Tok’Ra have been. I’d appreciate it if you took care of her for me until I return.”
“It will be our pleasure.” Freya answered.
Louis nodded and got to his knees to be level with Nefertari. “I need you to behave girl. I am going home for a while and I need you to stay here.” She whined and reached forward with a paw as if beginning. She really is too smart for her own good.
-I wonder how much she actually understands. – Malek answered.
Enough to protest it seems. Louis stated. “Stay here and behave for Anise, girl.” Again she whined, but she seemed to understand that Louis would not be swayed. With a small hiss she rose to her feet and hid behind a table, the only sign of her there was the tip of her tail. Louis sighed and rose to his feet. “She shouldn’t give you much trouble, but just in case, close the door behind us, it won’t keep her locked in for long but at least it will make it clear that we don’t want to be followed.”
“She’s that intelligent?” Anise asked.
Louis shrugged. “I don’t know. She seems to understand enough to give an appropriate response but how much she actually understands is a mystery at the moment.”
“Would you mind if I ran some intelligence tests?” Anise asked. “Nothing invasive, just some brainwave reading and some intellectual challenges.”
“I don’t see anything wrong with that.” Louis agreed. “It might even keep her distracted enough to keep her out of trouble. Though I should warn you, she is covered in quills that are filled with toxins. If she is angry she can extend them outwards, the most dangerous are on her tail. They appear to be a part of her anatomy, so taking them away is a no go but she seems intelligent enough to know that she should not harm any of us. Still, if she is frightened or angry she may lash out and I’d hate for anyone to be hurt.”
“You need not worry, Louis. I will do her no harm and I will make sure no one who intends harm will get near to her.” Anise agreed. “You and Malek worry about the Tau’ri. I will worry about and protect your friend.”
“Thank you.” Louis stated. He remained for a few minutes more to ensure there was no animosity between cat-hybrid and the scientist before turning and leaving the pair. He sealed the door behind him but he was still listening closely waiting for the tell-tale sound of paws hitting stone. When no such sound came Louis relaxed, breathing a sigh of relief as he realised Nefertari had not panicked and rushed after him. At least, he hoped she was not panicking.
-No sense worrying about it, my host. We have a job to do and Nefertari cannot come. She must learn that we cannot have at our side always. – Malek answered.
I am allowed to worry, Malek. I will always worry but I know we must leave her behind.
-Of course you can worry, Beloved, but we must not allow that worry to cloud our judgement. - Malek answered. – Now come, we have loitered long enough, the others must be gathering at the rings and we must be there soon or they will come search for us. -
We have an hour.
Malek chuckled. -Did you not see their excitement, dear one? They will not wait, in fact Cosima seemed to be bouncing with excitement and Samantha enjoys her discussions with Daniel. And we too cannot wait to see our friends. -
Louis was not surprised to find out that Malek was right. Malek had great intuition and seemed to know his friends needs well, which admittedly was not a surprise, after all as a friend and a base commander Malek had to anticipate the needs of his people and friends. Unfortunately, that intuitiveness was often clouded by pride but Malek’s good nature often made his bad quirks um-noticeable.
Cosima was indeed excited by Louis saw hesitation in her movements. She was afraid, of what Louis did not know. But Malek seemed to understand as the symbiote’s feelings were clouding Louis’s thoughts. Malek sighed. – She wants to know the new host, but she dearly loves Ambelie. Not only that but she is a stranger to our group and feels she’s intruding. We will endeavour to include her and comfort her. –
She is one of us. Louis agreed. To the others he merely said, “I wasn’t expecting you all so soon.”
Jolinar smiled. “This is a grand moment, the Tok’Ra are finally reaching out and making alliances with a new race. Not only this but in just a few short months the Tau’ri have helped us improve our security, ensuring the safety of our agents. No. Not agents. Family.”
Delek raised a brow. “It seems so strange to think that we’ve become so divided that we don’t refer to our kin as family. And yet that is what we are. Brothers and sisters joined by a great purpose.”
“Our need for secrecy has led us to hide from our own people.” Lantash commented solemnly, unaware he was speaking words Per’sus had said in the meeting not a half hour before. “Perhaps we need to consider reaching out to the people, reuniting with kin and not focusing on duty, if only for a while.”
-I am going to take control, beloved. I feel I need to speak to them in person. – Malek stated.
Louis did not hesitate. Of course. This is an important discussion you symbiotes must have.
Malek was extremely grateful for having such a compassionate host. He took control and nodded at Lantash’s statement. “Perhaps you are right, brother, we need to reunite our people. Perhaps an occasion? A party or celebration or a regular meeting.”
Jolinar suddenly looked excited. “Movie nights! Or game nights?”
Malek thoughtfully nodded. “We could encourage our siblings to participate in activities or to bring back new ideas and games.”
“Perhaps we should think about this later.” Ocker offered. “Perhaps the Tau’ri could help us there, like they have with so many other things.”
Jolinar nodded. “Ocker is right. My host knows many games, as does Louis no doubt, but if we want our people to be equal and to strengthen the bond between kin we need to have something that is suitable for all human races. Movie night and artistic performances might be more appropriate and exciting. I know there are a few hosts who are skilled singers and actors or actresses. Perhaps we could appeal to them to provide entertainment.”
“A good idea.” Cosima added. “I know a few hosts and symbiotes who would love the opportunity.”
Delek smiled. “It will add a friendly and welcome side to undercover.”
Malek frowned briefly before smiling as he spoke. “Delek is right. Going undercover is acting, but there is always a fear that we be discovered and killed. Acting for entertainment may be just what we need to show that even in the darkest hour there is joy.”
“There is a risk that many would associate it with their undercover work and react negatively.” Cosima warned.
Malek nodded. “True, but if it is accepted by the council we could use it to help those suffering from psychological fear of acting. By showing that acting is not necessarily used for just undercover work we could heal the operatives and bring some entertainment and joy onto base for our kin.”
“As a rule the Tok’Ra are silent.” Jolinar commented. “We talk quietly and try not to make a lot of noise. If we bring music and activity to the base, we could, theoretically, make this place more of a home.” She smiled, no doubt responding to something Samantha had said. “I certainly enjoyed the camaraderie and friendships the Tau’ri share. They were loud, noisy but it wasn’t a bad sound, in fact it made me feel at home. Everyone had something to say, everyone is willing to talk and listen.”
Ocker laughed. “Look at you two! You’ve already changed Tok’Ra law and challenged preconceptions and you are already planning to change something else!”
Malek smirked. “I like the work.” It just so happened that he said this as the rings began to transport them to the surface. His companion’s laughter echoed through the halls and startled the surface guards. The guards sought his gaze since he was the only one not laughing, although a smile was plain to see on Louis’s face. “Ignore them. They believe I was making a joke.”
Jolinar giggled and struggled to stifle it behind a hand. Lantash on the other-hand moved to activate the dialling system as Ocker activated the code to let the Tau’ri know they were coming through. Malek shook his head as if appalled by their antics, but his smile ruined the gesture.
“Let’s go before Malek finds a reason to stay behind and continue working.” Delek warned.
The truth was, they were right, given a good excuse Malek really would spend hours working. It was why Ocker all but dragged him to through the wormhole and into familiar dull grey halls of the SGC. The moment he was off the ramp Daniel was at his side excitedly rambling about the latest technology the team had retrieved. Louis laughed and embraced his friend, silencing the rambling. “Daniel, relax, we can talk shop later. I have a few things I must do. Could you have the medic, Victoria, come to the briefing room, there is someone I’d like for her to meet.”
Delek did not protest, in fact he and Lantash looked pleased that Louis had chosen to address the need for a host before confirming the alliance between their two people. Malek sighed. -My brethren still think your people will refuse to give us what we truly need. What Victoria says will dictate the views of my brothers. -
Let us hope she meant what she said, when she claimed she was interested in becoming a host. Louis answered.
General Hammond met them at the door as the exited the gate room. “It is good to see you again, Louis, Malek. What brings you back?”
Louis smiled. “The treaty and a more personal matter.” He waved Cosima forward and she moved to his side. “May I introduce our medic, Cosima. The nurse, Victoria mentioned an interest in becoming a host and I thought they may be a perfect match when the time comes for Cosima to leave Abelie.” Louis explained.
George looked hesitant but nodded. “I assume that is why I saw Daniel rushing off?”
Louis nodded. “I have asked him to have Victoria sent to the briefing room so that the two could meet in a more private environment. I hope that was not too forward of me.”
George allowed a small smile on his face. “Since when have we stood on ceremony? You have been a loyal soldier and a great ally, a few unscheduled meetings in the briefing room can be overlooked.” He stated. “Is there anything else?”
“The treaty.” Louis replied. “Anything else can wait.”
“Still, it is a large entourage for a simple treaty meeting.” Hammond countered.
Louis shook his head. “You’ve met most of my companions General, but allow me to reintroduce you to them. Firstly, there is Delek and Sebastian, he along with Jolinar and Samantha are my fellow councillors and two of the advocates for the Tau’ri-Tok’Ra alliance. Cosima and Abelie are skilled healers and Cosima will be in need of a new host soon which is why I brought her to meet Victoria. Lantash and Martouf, a good friend and skilled tactician will be invaluable through our talks about the treaty and of course you know my bodyguard, Ocker and his host Kimani.”
Hammond bowed his head in greeting. “I did indeed know most of them, but it is a genuine pleasure to be reintroduced.” It may have been just a polite statement but Louis saw how everyone relaxed, even if slightly at the friendly greeting. “Perhaps we best adjourn to the briefing room where we can continue our talks.”
“There is not much else to be said.” Martouf stated. “We are simply refining the details and finishing up. Our council has agreed to sign the current treaty as they believe that it is a fair treaty between our peoples. If your side are content with the treaty and are ready to sign we can arrange for our two representatives to meet and sign the treaty together.”
Malek took control then, a friendly smile forming on his host’s face. “As you can imagine, bringing an important person as our leader to an undisclosed location is a dangerous endeavour. I trust you as does Louis and I am sure Samantha and Jolinar will do nothing but vouch for you.” Samantha tilted her head then in agreement. “But we cannot have such an important individual travelling out of the safety of the tunnels and our guards on our word alone. So alternatively we are working to make sure both sides are happy before we arrange a meeting between our two representatives.”
Hammond nodded. “A wise precaution.”
“Between the now and the official treaty signing, both Malek and I will be the official messengers for both the Tau’ri and the Tok’Ra.” Jolinar piped up. “Selmak and Jacob could have been chosen but our hosts were believed to be the best representatives since they have links to the SG program and have a reputation with the leading authorities.”
“But if at any time this displeases your superiors, we will have another take our place.” Malek stated.
“Perhaps Anise?” Jolinar offered.
Malek shook his head, a teasing smile on his lips. “She will spend too much time flirting with the men in charge. I suggest Delek here. He knows a lot about the treaties and will have the whole thing checked with a fine tooth comb, no one will be able to get away with any underhand tricks.”
Delek laughed. “Damn right.”
Jolinar blinked. “Have you been teaching his Tau’ri slang?”
Malek shrugged. “I think he picked it up from Louis. He called Delek a dick once.” Jolinar giggled and Martouf shot her a sappy, adoring look that he thought no one else noticed. Malek smiled and turned back to Hammond. “Everything on these pads contains the treaty the Tok’Ra council have agreed to. I am sure everything is in order but I am all sure your superiors will want to analyse everything contained within it before they agree to the signing of the treaty.”
“Politics.” Hammond muttered.
“No one likes it, but it is necessary at times.” Lantash agreed. Malek shared a weary look with the symbiote, before smiling, pleased that Lantash had taken part in their discussion. “Of course, now the treaty is handed over it is up to your people. I hope it will not take too long for your people to agree to what is written, after all your people were the first to analyse the treaty and accept much of what the treaty contains.”
Malek went to speak only to pause as out of the corner of his eye he noticed two individuals. As one the Tok’Ra turned drawing Hammond’s attention to the newcomers. The first was Daniel. The second the nurse Victoria Harris who looked decidedly out of her depth and very nervous. Hammond nodded in acknowledgement. “Please take a seat.” Victoria hesitated before she took a seat. “So Nurse Harris, have you been informed as to why you are here?”
Victoria nodded. “I made a comment some time ago about being interested in being a host in the future. Malek must have remembered and when…” She paused to eye Cosima. “…Cosima…” It came out as more of a question but Victoria relaxed when Cosima nodded. “…needed a new host he suggested myself. I am quite happy to get to know the symbiote and her host to see if we would make a good pairing.”
Malek grinned. “Thank you for being open minded. I hope by the end of our visit you are more comfortable with the idea and are happy to give your consent to a blending with Cosima in the future. Until that time I was hoping Cosima could be assigned to work with your medical personnel. She is an efficient healer, in fact one of the best so far, she will not be in your way and it will give the pair ample opportunity to get to know one another.”
Hammond hummed. “I see no reason to say no. As long as Doctor Frasier is happy I will assign Cosima and her host to her team.”
Cosima smiled. “Thank you very much General Hammond, Malek. Abelie and I are grateful for this opportunity.”
Hammond smiled. “I suggest you go and get yourself settled, it may be at least a week before we hear any news.” He suggested.
Victoria nodded, realising the dismissal for what it was. “Come Cosima, Abelie, allow me to introduce you to Janet. She is a lovely if stern woman and she will be grateful for any help you can offer.”
Once the pair were gone Hammond turned to Malek. “You will be needing somewhere to stay as well. I will have some rooms assigned to you.”
Malek tilted his head. “Actually I was hoping you could do me a favour.”
“Go on.”
“I would like to take my friends to visit Feodore’s home world. There is a surprise there I wish to show them and there is also an issue of a more personal nature that I must address.” Malek stated. At this Delek’s hand rose to rest over Malek’s own hand that lay on top of the table, making it very clear what the personal issue was.
Hammond took a look and nodded once more. “Very well, I can arrange for that to happen. But you may need to return quickly when a response comes back from the government, so I will need you to carry a radio.”
Malek nodded. “It will be no trouble at all to do so.” He smiled gratefully. “But I am sure I speak for both my host and Samantha when I say we’d like to stay for a little while and catch up with our friends.”
Samantha took control. “I have missed my team. I hear Daniel is excited about the latest discovery you’ve made. Could I go join him for a couple of hours?”
Hammond grinned. “I am sure your input will be invaluable.”
“Would you mind if my host and I joined her?” Lantash asked.
Samantha chuckled. “Of course you are coming with me. I am sure Malek won’t mind being alone with Ocker and Delek.”
Malek laughed. “Of course not, it is not the first time we have had to entertain ourselves. Go, I am sure Daniel has been missing your company and your intelligent mind.” He turned to look at Ocker and Delek. “Besides, I am thinking about spending time in the cafeteria, get people used to the Tok’Ra and the idea of willing hosts.”
“You want our hosts to take control?” Delek asked.
“If they choose to. I want to try and eliminate any fear of us.” Malek stated. “They’ve not seen many Tok’Ra host’s in control and so they don’t understand what makes us different from the Goa’uld.” He turned to Hammond. “So if it is okay with you we will spend the next couple of hours there.”
Hammond smiled. “Of course, in fact I encourage it.” He stated. “If you are to be our allies, we need to be working together without fear or hesitation.”
“My thoughts as well, General.” Malek agreed before sighing and leaning back in his seat. “It seems the purposes we need to discuss have been dealt with. Perhaps it is time to adjourn until we hear news.” He stated as he glanced around to eye his companions as well as the General. “After all, what is another few hours or even a couple of days. These things cannot be rushed and if our alliance is to work we need to have a good comradery with the SGC teams.”
“The beginnings of any peace between our peoples will begin here, what happens here affects how my superiors will react to any alien presences on our world.” General Hammond responded. “And so too, does our actions dictate what your people think of us. If you can create any tentative friendships and alliances with my people you will strengthen our people’s friendship and the alliance.”
“You are of course correct.” Ocker agreed easily. “But we also cannot risk any potential confrontations. There are some humans who will no doubt hate us because of our natures. This we cannot help and although we hold ourselves to higher standards than our cousins, many humans would not see beyond our physical appearances and our need for hosts.”
“But that is where we can act on our symbiotes behalf.” Sebastian countered. “Our symbiotes are often too proud and too arrogant, this frightens any potential future alliances and friends. If we speak for them, on their behalf as often as possible. In this way, Malek and Louis are correct, we need to show that hosts still have free will, if our symbiotes speak for us and we do not show our presence then the humans here will see nothing but suppressed hosts and arrogant creatures posing as peaceful symbiotes.”
“Ocker is not evil.” Kimani objected. “But I agree, the humans would not know the love the symbiotes share with their hosts. But how can we show how deep our bond runs without them becoming hosts themselves? I could never describe the absolute elation and peacefulness that represents my bond with Ocker. I could not be without him, even if I lost him and was offered another, I could not accept. Ocker is mine, just as I am his.”
Louis took control then, placing a hand on the man’s shoulder. “I do not expect you to explain or describe the intimacy of your bond with Ocker, just as I could never explain my love for Malek, I only ask that you speak every now and then and let people know you as well as Ocker.”
“That I can do.” Kimani agreed.
“I will let Sebastian speak for me more often whilst we are staying on your world. I too see the value of having a friendship with your people and will do nothing to jeopardise our growing alliance.” Delek agreed.
Louis smiled fondly at Delek, giving him a slight tilt of his head to express his gratitude of the stubborn Tok’Ra’s support before turning to General Hammond. “I think the best thing to do is head to the cafeteria. There we can explore and socialise without compromising any confidential SGC secrets.”
“There are no secrets being hidden on this base and I would certainly ask for your help as well as the Tok’Ra if I discovered anything we could not explain.” General Hammond answered. “Although our alliance is not yet in stone I have come to trust Malek’s judgement and would eagerly accept his help. However, there are places I must state are restricted at this moment in time. However, I will not belittle you by telling you where, you should know.”
“I do.” Louis agreed. “I will go directly to Doctor Fraiser’s office and have the preliminary checks done and then head to the cafeteria.”
Hammond tilted his head. “That would be advisable. I trust you haven’t brought any pathogens with you as your symbiotes would have informed you and hopefully us, but protocols are necessary and if my superiors think I’ve let security drop it will put not only this base and our jobs at risk but also this alliance.”
“We have to play by the rules for this to work.” Kimani agreed. “We Tok’Ra are the same in this regard, many decisions are made after thorough investigation and consideration.”
“Perhaps too much consideration and investigation.” Louis commented earning amused smirks from both Kimani and Delek. “But Malek likes it for some reason.” Insane symbiote.
-Impatient human. - Malek retorted teasingly.
“Indeed, he does.” Delek agreed. “I cannot count how many times we have had to encourage him away from his office.”
“No rest for the wicked, I am afraid, son.” Hammond replied with a smile. “Our jobs are full of paperwork and red tape.”
“Red tape?” Ocker asked clearly confused.
“Restrictions, politicians trying to interfere or block our plans, rules and regulations.” Louis explained. “Basically, all the things that could and would stop us doing our job if we didn’t follow regulations to the letter.”
“Ah, I understand.” Delek replied. “We have that too. Although we do not document everything on paper because it is a security risk, we do keep strict records. Most of us are rather lenient as long as the records are complete but there are some of us like Anise who like a thorough recollection of events and supplies. I suppose I cannot blame her, I have learnt how valuable thorough records and care can be if applied reasonably.”
Louis chuckled and turned to Hammond. “Samantha and I have encouraged the Tok’Ra to embrace a few Tau’ri ideas of our own. Regular health checks are compulsory on Malek’s base now. Surprisingly we didn’t have a huge amount of opposition, in fact it was all rather successful. The council agreed to enforce it on all other bases.”
“There will be more opposition on other bases. You have to remember that the agents in Malek’s base have absolute faith in him. The other councillors and base commanders will have a bigger struggle.” Ocker commented.
“We should not speak about this now!” Delek stated firmly. “Our alliance is still new and until it is set in stone there are some things that should not be said.”
Hammond sighed. “I agree, until we have precautions in place there are organisations and politicians out there that will use whatever vulnerability they can find against the Tok’Ra and this tentative alliance. We will speak of such things when we are sure we are safe to do so.” He shifted in his seat. “Now, I do not think there is much more to be said. Please go, mingle with my people and enjoy yourself, it is rare to have down time and you should enjoy it whilst you can.”
“Agreed.” Louis replied. “Alright, let’s go torment Doctor Frasier for a bit!”
“I can see why you are so happy here.” Delek commented the moment they were out of the meeting room. “In some ways, the SGC reminds me of the Tok’Ra bases, where everyone is family and each individual has their place and are valued.”
Louis smiled at the Tok’Ra. “Our organisation is a secret, only the highest authority knows. Secrecy brings us together but out in the field on another world there is no support other than your team-mates and that has created a bond that is hard to break. The SGC supports its own. You’re right in some ways we have become a family.”
“A strong one at that. Something I cannot help but envy.” Kimani answered. “There is a certain comradery here that is unlike anything I have experienced before.” He added. “I mean, if a Tok’Ra agent is missing only one or two spies are sent to see if he’s alive and can be retrieved but your people will do anything they can, throw as many skilled people as they can into a rescue attempt, even if it is to retrieve the body. It is dangerous, stupid and insane but also enviable.”
Malek surged forward taking control and embracing his long-time friend. “There are rules and regulations that we cannot shirk because they ensure our safety. Unlike the Tau’ri we simply do not have the numbers to launch any rescue attempts. But that is why I am so adamant that we need the Tau’ri. They can do what we cannot. They can retrieve lost agents, perform fetes that we simply cannot afford to even try to achieve. They will become another face of our seemingly unending battle against the Goa’uld. The Tau’ri can overwhelm the Goa’uld, challenge them whilst we destroy their very foundations piece by piece.”
Delek smiled at Malek’s passionate speech. “Perhaps one day we will not need to worry about our agents, perhaps we will not have to worry about whether they will or won’t come home because we will know they are as safe as a Tok’Ra can be. Our numbers may not increase but perhaps one day they won’t decrease as dramatically as they are now in our war against the Goa’uld.”
“One can only hope.” Kimani responded before bowing his head and letting Ocker come to the fore. The guard smiled his thanks at his friend’s support. “Kimani is right, there are too many deaths and not a lot of successes despite our strongest efforts. I hope these humans are as good as you say.”
“Is someone challenging my abilities?” A familiar voice asked.
Louis laughed and turned to see the man that was approaching with a grin upon his face. “Vinnie!” He cried and embraced the man the moment he was close enough. “How have you been? How is your little girl?”
“I am well and little Ashley is her adorable little self of course. She’s at that stage where she is constantly asking questions.” The man chuckled at some very fond memory. “She’s curious about my work right now, but due to the secrecy of the project I haven’t been able to say a word.”
A cough from behind Louis had the man laughing and turning to Delek. “Forgive me. Delek, Ocker, may I introduce Captain Vincent Clarke, one of the few who accepted Malek the moment Malek was discovered.” He introduced. “Vinnie, may I introduce Councillor Delek and his host Sebastian and my Guard and friend, Ocker and his host Kimani.”
“A pleasure.” Delek greeted before tilting his head and allowing Sebastian control. “Nice to meet you.” The man stated with a warm smile.
Ocker bowed his head and allowed Kimani control. “It is nice to meet you as well, Captain.”
Vinnie waved his hand. “Vinnie, please.” He told them. “A friend of Louis’s is a friend of mine.” He added. “I see you’re heading to Doctor Frasier. I would warn you she is not in a very welcoming mood. Colonel O’Neill has annoyed her again, seems he brought back a pathogen on his last mission. Nothing serious, mind you, but a few members of SGC are in bedrest until she has found a way to treat them. From what I understand it is similar to a common cold but lasts long enough to drain and exhaust its host.”
“Sounds awful.” Louis commented.
“Well my wife says we men are like babies when we’re sick. Always whining and complaining like we’re dying.” Vinnie stated with a laugh. “I heard some cadets doing just that, begging her to put them out of their misery. No doubt Doctor Frasier is close to doing as they ask.” He chuckled. “Perhaps you Tok’Ra can save them before she loses her temper.” He added with a teasing grin.
Delek laughed. “It seems we symbiotes have to save the day once again.” Delek said in jest.
“Go forward, oh mighty knight.” Vinnie replied, his voice barely heard through his laughter. He sobered up and clapped a hand on Louis’s shoulder. “Seriously, it is good to see you whole and well. Hopefully I’ll catch you in the cafeteria later before you have to leave.”
“I’ll look for you.” Louis agreed with a smile.
“He seems an honourable man.” Kimani stated. “A little childish but not stupidly so.”
Louis grinned at his guard. “Vincent has always had a chilled-out view of the world, he believes that laughter is the cure for all ills. A long time ago he told me he’d rather laugh because sometimes if he didn’t he’d cry or punch something. As a warrior, crying is not something a man wants to admit doing but Vinnie has always been a sensitive soul behind all that posturing and bluster.” He explained. “On top of that he has a little girl to think of, if he dwells on the bad it would show in his behaviour, a sad expression or a reluctance to play so he works off the stress by trying to enjoy every moment he has.”
“A good way to live.” Delek replied. “I would like to speak to him again, he is very noble and a refreshing change to the more close-minded humans.”
“Says you.” Louis replied teasingly.
“Says me.” Delek replied with a smirk, pressing his brow to Louis’s in a gesture of affection.
Ocker coughed. “Should we not be reporting to Doctor Frasier?”
“We should.” Louis agreed. “But I am dreadi….” He stopped as a loud voice echoed through the hallways.
“O’Neill!”
Colonel Jack O’Neill came rushing down the hallway from the medical bay with a smirk on his face. “Hi Louis, would love to stay and chat but I have somewhere else to be.” He stated rushing passed as if he had the hounds of hell snapping at his heels. The three Tok’Ra could do little but watch as the man vanished.
“What was that about?” Delek asked.
“No doubt he has had to flee Doctor Fraiser’s wrath.” Louis commented.
Sure, enough Janet Frasier looked furious, glaring at one of her patients who was all but cowering under her stern gaze despite the fact he was practically twice her size and capable of bending her in half. “What do you have to say for yourself?” Her voice was stern, as thick as steel and carried the metaphorical weight of a boulder. It certainly seemed to pin the man in his place as he stopped squirming to eye her with fearful trepidation.
“I…I….”
Loud laughter echoed through the room. “Leave the poor fellow along ma’am.” Victoria teased as she appeared with Cosima at her heels. “It was all Jack’s doing.”
“But this fool ate it, knowing he’d be sick.” Janet hissed pointing the empty wrappings that had once held a burger. “How did O’Neill even get them on base?”
Victoria shrugged. “I don’t know. What I do know is you don’t need to punish them. The burgers they ate will do that.” Funnily enough some of the cadets did look a little green. Louis hid a smirk and waved at Victoria and Cosima as the pair noticed him. “Louis!” Victoria greeted. “I had not expected you here.”
“There was no need to keep the meeting going until all the paperwork was officialised. I am here for a check-up.” Louis stated looking at Janet who still looked absolutely furious.
Victoria sniggered behind a hand. “Don’t worry, Doctor Frasier, I will deal with these gentlemen, you focus on those cadet’s.” The quiet sounds of horror by said cadets had Louis struggling to hold in a laugh, so much so that he turned to Delek who shielded him from Janet’s view. Looking up Louis could see Delek struggling to hold in his own laughter, but since he had his back to Doctor Frasier he was in no danger of discovery. Victoria on the other hand saw all this and she too turned away. “Come along boys.” She meant to say it seriously but her tone revealed how amused she was and they all felt and saw the glare Janet gave her before the elder woman gave a reluctant smile and turned away.
“Oh God, her face!” Louis stated the moment they were out of hearing range. “Their faces!”
Delek’s body shuddered around him as the other Tok’Ra laughed. “There are things that translate between species it seems.”
“And what’s that?” Ocker asked with a smirk.
“Never cross a female doctor!” The three men laughed and Victoria chuckled, her cheeks turning red.
Cosima on the other hand raised a brow. “And yet you seem to ignore the dictates of our own Tau’ri medics.” At this the three men quietened guiltily and looked anywhere but at the stern woman. “Now, Victoria dear, show me how these machines work.”
Louis went first leaving the warmth of Delek’s arms to sit upon the medical bed. He made great efforts to keep quiet and obliging lest he annoy the two woman working on him. Malek was chuckling within making this a little difficult but considering the women were struggling to hold in their own laughter they could not judge.
“All clear.” Victoria said a moment later.
“Delek.” Cosima indicated to Louis’s now vacated spot. “Delek is the symbiote and Sebastian is his host.” She told Victoria as Delek obligingly took a seat. She introduced Ocker as well when it was the guards turn and surprisingly both hosts came to the fore and spoke to them both for a few moments.
Louis grinned at the pair, it seemed they really were willing to strengthen the bond between the Tok’Ra and the Tau’ri. They’d taken his previous words into consideration and the hosts were now being more active in their participation during conversations and activities.
“I do hope you three intend to behave.” Amelie stated coming to the fore herself to scold the three of them.
Louis laughed. “There is not much damage we can do, Amelie. We are simply heading to the cafeteria to mingle. Fancy joining us?”
Amelie glanced at Victoria and the human smiled. “There isn’t much else to do here. I have to remain on hand in case anymore sick personnel are sent in but my break is due, so I should be alright to leave for half hour or so if you wish me to accompany you.”
“I do.” Amelie replied.
-Just think, one day all Tok’Ra and Tau’ri could be like this. Friends, perhaps even more and the fear of my kind will be a distant memory. -
Perhaps one day our people could help yours. Somehow revitalise your species so that we can exist in unison.
-An eternal friendship between our peoples. Or at least one that lasts for as long as we exist. I think I’d like that. Perhaps one day. -
That one day is looking closer than ever. We have done a good job, haven’t we? Louis hadn’t meant to, but somehow his trepidation showed. It was easy to be overwhelmed by everything that was happening. To become a part of something that was bigger than just one man. Louis, through Malek, had responsibility to ensure everything flowed and worked and at times that responsibility frightened the host.
Malek smiled, tightening gently around Louis’s spine and sent nothing but appreciation through their bond. -You are doing marvellous, my beloved host. You are becoming quite a celebrity to both Tok’Ra and Tau’ri alike. Your name is already being said with respect and adoration and I could not be prouder. I thank Egeria every day for being gifted such a wondrous host. -
I just don’t want to make mistakes. What if I mess this up?
-You have yet to do anything to mess things up. In fact, you have helped my people make more progress in these past few weeks than we have made in centuries. The protocols the council spoke highly of were your idea. You influenced the necessary changes to ensure the safety of the Tok’Ra. The denizens of my base have said so on several occasions but you would not listen, blinded by self-doubt. But you will listen now. You are an amazing host and you are respected by many. Even stubborn Delek listens to your words. -
True. Louis spoke hesitantly.
Malek chuckled. -At one point Delek thought himself above all else, now look at him, always watching, opening himself up to all the possibilities. He’s becoming the man I respected and loved all those years ago. -
Once again Malek was right, Delek seemed to have changed overnight, he didn’t seem as angry as before. More tolerant and he was staring at them with clear respect and trust. Louis sighed. I hope that trust is not misplaced.
Malek could have answered but he did not need to, Delek must have seen something in Louis’s expression, perhaps self-doubt, as he came to stand at Louis’s back. He was a solid supporting presence and Louis slowly relaxed. Malek chuckled at this of course and retook control, turning to his friend and lover. “You always seem to know when I need you.” He whispered, half listening as Amelie and Victoria argued about the viability of some test or another. Out of the corner of his eyes he saw Ocker stand to block the women’s view of him and Delek and Malek smiled at the man before turning back to Delek who seemed to only have eyes for his mate.
“I’ve always known.” Delek replied just as quietly. “But for the longest time I could not touch.” Malek was not surprised that a moment later the larger man had wrapped arms around him. “You’ll excuse me if I do so now.”
“I think we need it now.” Malek answered. “Louis is just realising his power. He’s just realising all the good he has brought both our peoples and is worried he’d make the wrong decision.”
Delek chuckled. “Louis is an amazing man, he brought us back together and may have begun the long process of saving our people. He has yet to make a bad decision.” He stated confidently before his voice adopted a teasing tone. “He’s alright for a human.”
Malek laughed, resting against his mate for a moment before straightening and turning to the women. “I do believe our plans were to go to the cafeteria. Unless you wish us to leave you two ladies to your chemicals.”
As if to answer a low rumble was heard and Victoria, who was very much aware of the Tok’Ra’s enhanced hearing, blushed. “Well it seems that that is our answer. I’m hungry.” The group laughed as one, Victoria in embarrassment and the Tok’Ra in fondness and amusement. The groups laughter earned the curious gazes of the sick cadets, but they paid no heed as they left the infirmary. And if Malek and Delek stood too close to each other, no one said a word.
