The Primogen of the clans looked at Kali with her black hood still over her face before she removed it revealing eyes still wet with the blood tears. Kali removed her cloak and placed it on her chair and walked towards them. Kali looked at them all with a calm eye. She wiped the tears aside quickly. "My tale is far different than some of your own 'embrace'."
"Not likely, Kali." said Cash, crossing his arms.
"Was your 'embrace' due to being stabbed violently by a serial killer and the only two people who were around to help you was Kindred?" asked Kali, glaring at him.
"Well, okay, maybe you have a point." mumbled Cash, he quickly looked away from her.
"I knew two heads of two Kindred clans at the time of my 'death'. Both are gone now, one died guarding the secret of his prince. The other died in a car crash explosion." said Kali, turning to look at Cash and then turned to look at the chair she stood in front of.
"You knew Julian Luna?" asked Cameron, lightly surprised.
"I knew him and Stevie." said Kali, calmly.
"Not Stevie Ray, the Gangrel's former Primogen?" asked Sonny. Cash looked at Kali with shock.
"Yes, I knew him. Now can I tell my tale or shall we discuss former Primogen??" asked Kali, looking at them strongly.
"Yes, please tell us your tale of your embrace, Kali." said Daedalus.
"Thank you, Daedalus. I appreciate it." spoke Kali, slightly smiling and nodding towards him as she motioned for them to follow her into the library where she sat down in a comfy chair. "My tale starts in 1895, when I was born. My death and rebirth happened in 1915, I was twenty years old and already engaged to marry a young twenty two year old business man. I was born in a small city near the border of what is known as Mexico, but I lived most of my life in San Francisco..."
She could not have asked for a better night. Kali stood out on the verandah, enjoying the warm spring night and taking a moment away from the commotion of her bridal shower. The half moon above illuminated a beautiful new San Francisco, newly rebuilt after the great 1906 earthquake had reduced much of the city to rubble. Europe may have been spiraling downward into what was rapidly becoming known as the War to end all wars, but on the Pacific coast of the United States, Kali had far more important matters to attend to besides she didn't really care about Europe.
Sighing in content, Kali turned back to the large drawing room of her best friend Donna’s house, and started into the shower once again. She would be married in only two weeks to a young man who simply adored her and for once this marriage wasn't an arranged one, and on this night several of her friends were making certain that her last unmarried nights would be some of the best of her single life.
Kali was looking around the room where she was getting several bridal shower gifts. She was wearing her light pink dress that went all the way down to her light pink shoes that hid her small feet. She looked fabulous in it as her frame was well suited to the dress itself, her shiny black hair was pulled back in a pony tail with a white feathered hat on the side. The room was lighted by the gas lights. The windows were open to allow the smell flow out. It was not too long after she got there that her other best friend Mary arrived but she brought with her, which happened to be very uncommon in a bridal shower, her boyfriend and his friend who gazed at Kali.
Kali was asked by another guest if she knew Mary's two male friends that she brought with her. The young man wasn't looking at anyone else till someone spoke to him.
Kali was introduced to him as he kissed the back of her hand gently. His lips were cold and yet warm. The young man's eyes had a strange glint in them when she spoke to him about her life.
"So Jack, tell me something about yourself now that you know about me?" requested Kali.
"Tell me this, why did your mother name you Kali." asked Jack, gently as he sat down next to her.
"My mother wanted a different name than Calista, which my father wanted me named as. My mother and he argued about it for several days before our priest told us how about a compromise. My mom said Cali sounds like a really good name but my father suddenly realized that the name was great. So he chose the letter K and placed it in front of ali and my mother agreed to the name of Kali for me." smiled Kali.
"So where is your mother? I wish to meet the woman who bore such a pretty daughter." said Jack, as he looked around the room looking at towards the girls not seeing an older female in the group before he turned his gaze back at Kali.
"She died," Kali stated quietly, looking down at the ground. An awkward moment of silence hung over the pair until Jack spoke again.
"I'm sorry," the young man said. Kali looked up at him. "If I had known, I never would have broached the subject."
"Its all right,” Kali said, forcing a smile to her face. “It was a long time ago….when my brother was born.”
"Your brother?" Jack inquired, a bit surprised.
"Yes," Kali confirmed. "Daniel. He died only a few hours later."
“I had no idea,” Jack said, his voice barely a whisper. "I’m so sorry, Kali. Really, I am."
"Its all right, Jack," Kali said a second time. She looked up to the grandfather clock against the wall, then forced out a weak smile as she didn't feel really safe around him. "Sorry, I have to get going. Maybe I’ll see you later, Jack. It was nice...um...meeting you."
"Yes, nice meeting you too," Jack said, trying to smile himself and forcing the uneasy subject of Kali’s losses out of the way. "Maybe we can meet for a dinner somewhere, or even tea?"
"I'm...not. Yeah, I'd like to see you again,” Kali said. She turned and quickly walked away, weaving through the crowd and making her last goodbyes for the night.
Jack watched her go for a long moment, until he felt someone tap him on the shoulder. He turned to see Mary standing there. Jack gave a slightly embarrassed smile.
"Flirting with the bride to be, Jack?" Mary asked.
"I...uh...well...um...you know, just trying to be friendly," the young man stated, hazarding one last glance after Kali. Mary’s grin spread from ear to ear.
"Jack, you are so shameless, trying to get into the dress of a soon to be married woman!" the young woman chided, barely able to hold in her laughter. Then she turned back into the crowd once more, her giggles drifting away as she disappeared through the party guests.
Jack decided to get out of the room and get some fresh air when he saw Kali standing next to her horse and checking his right front leg. "Kali, what's wrong?"
"Well, I almost made him walk with this injury to his hoof. Looks like a stone bruise. I might have to let him stay here till he's better." said Kali, as she signaled couple stable hands to come to her side. "Tend to his hoof. I'll send my stable hand over in the morning and take him home."
Jack watched as she went to the stable to get a horse to take the place of the one injured. "Why don't I take you home myself in my cart. I assure you I am an honorable gentleman." Jack smiled as he bowed to her.
Kali looked at him as he summoned his horses, black steeds and a nice looking cart. "They are handsome steeds."
Jack smiled, "They are as fast as your horse, Kali. I'll be able to get you home and you in your bed within half an hour."
Kali looked at the horses and then at Jack. She really didn't feel like she should accept his offer but something in his voice convinced her. "All right, I accept your offer." as she walked towards his carriage.
Jack made small talk for much of the ride, but Kali simply gazed off into the distance as they traveled down the largely deserted streets of San Francisco. The moon was starting to set despite the somewhat early hour, sending the city into even deeper darkness as Jack guided his carriage along the coastal roads on the western edge of San Francisco. Kali was absently staring off at the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean when Jack brought the carriage to an abrupt halt, and started to climb down out of his seat.
"Jack?" Kali asked, coming back to the present and looked towards Jack. "What are we doing here?"
"I just have to grab something out of my house," Jack answered with an amiable smile. "I won’t be more than a few seconds. You can wait here, if you like, or you can come in for a moment."
"No, its all right, I'll wait here." Kali said, pulling her shawl about her shoulders a little more tightly to shield herself from the ocean breeze.
"Suit yourself," Jack said, shrugging. Then he turned and disappeared into his home.
Kali watched the door as it closed behind him for a moment, then looked back to the Pacific once more. Jack’s inadvertent inquiry about her mother had brought an unwelcome hint of sadness into what should have been a happy night, but Kali stubbornly refused to give in to her grief. Her mother had died long ago, and there was no reason to be grieving after all these years. Kali closed her eyes and forced the unhappy memories from her mind, and tried to focus on her upcoming wedding. Less then two weeks from that night, she would be guided down the aisle of Saint Brigid’s church, and a new chapter of her life would begin. She had many good years to look forward to, years that promised the joy that only a family could bring.
Kali began to smile again as she thought of the bright possibilities that lay ahead, but her thoughts were suddenly shattered as a powerful hand dragged her down from the carriage by the back of her dress. Kali toppled to the ground before she could even figure out what was happening. She frantically tried to scramble to her feet and run for Jack’s house, but she was tripped up before she could take a step and tumbled back to the ground. Next she tried to scream for help, but her unseen attacker clamped a hand down over her mouth even as she drew breath. Struggling desperately and trying to force a cry for help out from beneath her attacker's hand, the young woman was suddenly dragged back to her feet. An arm circled around her waist and pinned her arms to her sides before Kali could try to pull free of the assailant's grasp.
"Kali, relax!" an unnervingly familiar voice hissed into her ear. "It’s me! Stop struggling, God damnit! What the hell are you fighting for?"
"Jack?" Kali asked, stunned. It sounded like her escort, but there was something else in the voice, something terribly menacing and altogether terrifying.
Jack pulled her closer to him, until his lips brushed up against her ear as he spoke. "Yes, It’s me, my sweet, my love," Jack said, still not relinquishing his grip around her waist. He allowed his hand to drift away from her mouth for a moment as he continued. "Thank God you recognized me. I didn’t want to have to…get extreme."
"Jack, what are you doing?" Kali asked, squirming in the man’s iron grip he had around her waist. "Let me go, Jack! What are you doing?"
"Don’t you see, Kali?" Jack asked, as his lips drifted from her ear to her neck where he started to kiss her. "From the moment...I saw you, I knew we were fated to be together. That’s why we met, Kali. Why we met before you were married. Don’t you feel it?”
"What are you talking about?" Kali asked, stunned and terrified. Jack pulled her even tighter into him, until the pressure of his arm began to force the air out of Kali’s lungs.
"Feel what?" Jack repeated, his voice growing rapidly furious. "How can you even say that, Kali! We were meant to be together! Forever, Kali! Don't you feel the forces between us, drawing us together? Why would your horse be hurt if we're not supposed to be together! It's why we met tonight! Why are you still fighting me?"
"Jack, stop it! Please!” Kali screamed, kicking frantically in her attempts to escape.
Jack suddenly threw her forward into the side of the carriage, planting her face squarely into the sideboards. Kali hit the sturdy wooden planks and staggered back, her vision blurring as she staggered on her feet. "You little whore!” Jack suddenly bellowed in rage. "I came all this way to get you! I found you here, and you and I both know we were fated to be! God damnit Kali, don't deny what you feel!"
"You're insane!" Kali exclaimed, searching desperately for an escape from the maniac.
Jack backhanded her across the face, knocking her back into the carriage again and quickly cornering her. "I’m insane?" Jack repeated, enraged. "I’m insane?! How dare you, you little slut! You little fucking whore! You’re the one that’s insane!"
The move was so quick that Kali barely even knew what had happened. In one motion that was little more than a blur, Jack had drawn a slim knife from his belt and slashed her once through the chest. Kali gasped in pain and covered her wound on reflex, but Jack sliced into her a second time, drawing a line of blood across her forearm.
"Jack, please!" Kali sobbed in pain and fright. "Stop it! Someone help!"
"There’s no one to help you now, slut!" Jack growled, grabbing her by her hair and drawing her into the knife. He cut away again, drawing one long slash from her shoulder across her chest and down to her hip, then jammed the blade into her stomach up to the hilt. Kali slid down the side of the carriage, dizzy from the sudden pain and loss of blood.
Half coherent, the young woman tried to crawl beneath the carriage, but she was barely capable of any real movement. Jack yanked her up by her hair and shoved her back into the sideboards, pinning her up with one arm. Tears of blood streaked the maniac’s face even as his eyes betrayed his fury.
"It didn’t have to be like this!" Jack shouted in rage and grief, blaming Kali for what he had done to her. "Why didn’t you realize? It didn’t have to be like this! We could have been really good for each other!"
“What the hell is going on down here?” someone shouted.
Jack turned away from Kali for a moment, staring down the street, then his eyes quickly came back to his victim. “Jesus Christ, what have I done?” Jack suddenly exclaimed, his anger completely replaced by sorrow. “Oh my God, Kali, what have I done to you?”
“Hold it right there!” another newcomer ordered. Jack glanced back to the street, then let go of Kali and bolted off into the darkness. Kali slid back down the carriage, barely holding onto consciousness, as one of her two rescuers shot past her with what seemed like inhuman speed. Another man appeared a moment later, stopping and kneeling by her side.
"Easy now, child," the man said, gently brushing her hair back from her face. "He’s gone. Rest easy, and we’ll get you to a doctor."
"I’m dying. I know I am," Kali breathed out. She could barely feel her injuries any more, and the world was slowly starting to fade away.
The first man that she had seen returned to her side, and appraised the badly injured young woman quickly. "She has already lost a lot of blood," Jack’s pursuer pointed out. There was little concern in his voice. "We’d better not let the rest go to waste."
"No," the man kneeling next to her said. "She will not die tonight."
"Julian, she’ll never get to help before she dies," the standing man said.
"She comes with us, Stevie," Julian declared, as he bent towards Kali and lifted her up into his arms.
"You’re taking a big risk here," Stevie said. "The Prince won't like this."
"I know,” Julian agreed. "Now let's get her out of here before someone comes out to investigate the fight."
Kali went in and out of consciousness while they were transporting her to their home using the carriage that Kali was slumped against. She tried to get up to see where they were going but Julian just waved his hand in front of her eyes and made her sleep some more till they were able to deal with the attacker. Julian carried her into a room with a nice size bed and placed her within the comfy bed itself. Julian waited for her to stir which she soon did but she wasn't scared anymore. It was like she was accepting what was happening to her.
Julian looked at Kali as she laid on the bed bleeding from the many stab wounds. Julian knew he had to ask the question, "Kali, do you know who attacked you?"
"I'm...not sure." whispered Kali.
Julian looked at her and knew he needed to speak with Stevie alone. "I'll be right back. I need to get some more bandages for your wounds."
Kali nodded as she started to drift off to sleep again. Julian hoped that she would awaken from the sleep when he returned.
"All right, Julian. What's going through your mind? She's food for us." Stevie said once they were out of her room and the door had closed.
"I'm not sure. For some weird reason, I have the desire to make her one of us. But yet, I want to drain her completely." whispered Julian, as he paced in the outer room.
"Remember that this is something real serious...if someone is this crazy to attack a woman like Kali." Stevie said, looking at him as he entered the room behind Julian who carried some bandages.
Julian started to remove Kali's dress as he started to clean her wounds to find that they were deep in some places and shallow in others. "Kali, do you want to find your attacker and kill him?" asked Julian as he sat on her bed. He made his decision on what to do with her.
"I do. I want to kill him for making me die." whispered Kali, her breathing was starting to get labored.
"Kali, I can give you the ability to survive your mortal death." offered Julian.
"Yes! Give me it!" Kali whispered loudly.
"But there will be a problem with that. You see...there must be death to become Kindred." spoke Julian.
"Kindred? Who or what is that?" Kali asked seriously.
"It is who we are, child." spoke the blond haired man, looking at her with his eyes glowing softly.
Kali tried to back away but she was too weak to do so. Julian noticed the look of fear in her form. "Stevie!" he snapped. Julian turned towards Kali with a gentle look on his face. "Did this attacker have eyes glowing like ours?"
"No...I couldn't see his eyes too well. He was crying blood from his eyes. I'm not even sure if it was his or my blood."
Julian growled angrily, as he looked at Stevie, "Shit. He could be kine or Kindred. We'll never know."
"Julian, whatever you are. I accept the gift you give me. Give me the Gift of Life." said Kali, as she looked at him.
"Do you want what I am?" spoke Julian. He stopped pacing the length of the room to look at her strongly. "Once, you become Kindred, I cannot reverse it. The Kindred who embraced you will become your sire...like your father but in a different sense. The only thing that will make you meet Final Death is breaking the Masquerade to the kines, those mortal people outside this house."
"I understand, sire." whispered Kali. "And I accept the rules of the Kindred."
Stevie Ray was standing off to the side, thinking to himself as he watched the conversation between Kali and Julian: "Jesus, my boss is such a sap…"
"Then, your new life as a Ventrue begins now." spoke Julian, as he placed his mouth onto Kali's neck and bit down on her throat drinking her blood.
Kali felt the bite immediately and started to fight him off but the blood that was being drained by Julian was too much for her to withstand as she got close to real death. Julian quickly sat up, slit his own wrist and offered his wrist to her which she took into her mouth and drank the offered blood. Kali opened her eyes as she felt her heart slow and then stop totally.
"Don't be afraid. This is natural for us, when we are 'embraced'." whispered Julian, as he gazed at her as she started to look fearful.
"I live. But I feel strange, cold. I can see the Ventrue in you, Julian, as I see the Gangrel in Stevie." whispered Kali, as she sat up.
"Now we must get you new clothing and make you vanish from this city." spoke Julian, as he stood up and took hold of Kali's bloodied clothes. "Stevie, I need you to find me a woman of Kali's age, black hair all ready dead. Cut her face and body to where there is almost no way of stating that she is not who she really is. Then put the clothes on her and leave her in the alley where we found Kali at."
"It will be done." said Stevie. He turned and then bowed his head to a figure standing in the doorway. "Julian, the Prince is here."
Julian turned to see a gray haired man standing in the doorway. "Julian." he spoke, in a cold tone.
"Sire." whispered Julian, as he bowed his head to the Prince to see him gazing towards the bed where Kali was half asleep on. "I can explain this to you."
The gray haired man, who was wearing darker clothing than what Julian wore, entered the room fully. "You better have a very good reason to create a childe without informing me of why and who it would be."
"Sire, you heard about the serial killer who been killing women around here?" asked Julian.
"Yes, why does that concern you or more like me?" requested Archon, as he advanced towards Julian with an air of anger surrounding him.
"Because that serial killer who been killing women might be Kindred. He tried to kill this young woman. We prevented him from enjoying watching his victim die." spoke Julian.
"It is possible. The police didn't find any blood around the last victim so the possibility of him being Kindred is strong but he might not be Kindred, Julian." stated Archon.
"What's going on?" whispered Kali, trying to sit up.
Stevie placed his hand on her shoulder and spoke, "Stay lying down. You need to heal your wounds before you go about getting up."
Julian turned to Stevie, "Find the servant and 'allow' Kali to have her first meal."
"Stevie, don't even move away from her. Stay with the childe. I'll speak with her alone later. Julian and I must talk." hissed Archon, barely looking at Kali.
"Of course, my Prince." said Stevie, as he and Kali watched as Julian and Archon walked out of the room.
"Sire, I can explain..." Julian started but was interrupted.
"I hope you can, Julian. I'm giving you a fair warning about creating a childe without my permission as your elder and your prince." Archon spoke in a cold tone of voice.
Julian and Archon spoke in the outer room for several hours before they walked into the room where Kali was at. Julian nodded to Stevie, who picked up the bell and shook it.
A young black female servant entered the room carrying a new dress. "Oh the young miss has awakened. I brought fresh clothes for you to wear."
"Thank you. Please stay. I'm sure she'll want you to help her dress." said Julian. "Kali, we'll be right back."
Julian, Archon and Stevie walked out of the room and waited till Kali got her dress on and finished her meal. They suddenly heard a scream and then it went silent. They knew she was enjoying her first meal. Julian knocked on the door and they heard Kali's voice telling them it's all right to enter. There on the floor was the servant dead with a bite mark on her wrist. Kali was standing next to her wearing a blue dress.
"Sorry about the servant. She poked her finger with the needle and well, she was tasty." spoke Kali, sitting down in front of the mirror to brush her black hair out.
"Can you feel your wounds starting to heal, Kali?" asked Julian, walking towards her.
"Yes, but how can that be possible?" asked Kali.
"Kine blood will heal us and make us stronger." Julian stated.
Archon spoke, "I would like to speak with her alone now." Julian and Stevie both nodded and stepped out of the room to allow him to speak with Kali. "So do you know how to fight, Kali?"
"No, I don't." said Kali, realizing that he was checking her out. "I would like to know how to when and if I need to fight for my clan."
"I'll allow Julian to teach you the needed information on how to act around the kines and one thing. You must leave everything...that was once was yours...in your living life and move into your new life as a Ventrue member." spoke Archon, as he walked towards the door to see Julian standing there. "Julian, she's your childer and I want to see her acting like she has been a kindred and a Ventrue before the week is out and if she's unable to take the stance...send her to the Justicar and he'll tend to her himself."
"Yes, sire." Julian said as Archon walked out of the room.
Kali looked at the Primogen at the table calmly as she stood up. "That is my story. I was able to take the stance of a Ventrue and Kindred within the week."
"Why didn't you stay here?" asked Lillie, looking at Kali calmly.
"I wanted to stay here but after an incident with someone from my former life, I decided living here in San Fran would not be wise for me. I requested to be sent to the Justicar and I was. I lived there ever since training and becoming the best 'Observer' in the Ventrue clan." spoke Kali, as she looked at Lillie.
Cameron strode angrily down the corridor towards his office to see a shadow standing in the room. Cameron gave the person a critical look. "I can't believe that my clan has to deal with a blasted Ventrue observer!!"
"I know how you feel." spoke the shadow. "Maybe I can help you deal with this observer?"
"What do you mean?" asked Cameron, looking at the man who stood in front of him.
"Just tell me who he is and I'll make sure he'll see Final Death."
"No, that will just bring the Ventrue's Justicar here and I don't need him. I just want to get rid of Kali!" snapped Cameron, angrily.
The man asked in a wondering tone. "What does this...Kali look like?"
Cameron described Kali for him. Cameron knew by how quiet he was, he was thinking about something. "Can you do something about that bitch?"
"Oh yeah. That bitch will definitely will be dealt with.” spoke the man, as he stepped out of the shadow to reveal what he looked like.
"I'm glad." spoke Cameron, as he and the man started plotting the demise of the Ventrue 'Observer' Kali.
