It was dark around the complex, but not dark enough. Chris would have liked greater coverage but in this area of the city Wyatt had actually left most of the streetlamps working and they were glowing overhead annoyingly. Chris was tempted to topple the lot of them with his power. It would be a stupid, stupid move and he would have probes and probably his brother down here in a flash but at least it would reduce this neighbourhood to the level of most of the others around here. Just because Wyatt’s penthouse was on this block didn’t mean that it had to be perfect. He restrained himself and walked on, pressing his body against the chain link fence.
He listened carefully and as soon as he was sure that there was nothing there, slinked onwards. He was thinner than he had been since he had started this Resistance thing. There was hardly ever enough food and he had a habit of going without if he got too occupied with his work. However, he was also more muscular and fitter than he had ever been — just thinner. And taller.
There was a bag slung over his shoulder and from it he pulled a pair of clippers and snipped the fence away, created a tiny archway just big enough for him to scrape through. His bag snagged on a pointy piece of metal and as he reached to full it free, he cut his forearm. Wincing and hoping he didn’t get tetanus he dragged himself through the fence.
He knew there were guards patrolling around the inner circle. Anyone else would think that Wyatt was trying to compensate for something with all this security, but Chris knew that nothing of Wyatt’s needed compensating for.
The twenty-one-year-old waited to make sure that to demons were anywhere near and then proceeded to the interior fence. This one hummed with magic more effective then ten thousand volts would have been. Chris was reaching into his bag for a potion that would hopefully disarm one section long enough for him to slip through the wires when he was it in the side with an energy ball and crashed to the floor, dazed. Objects spilled out of his bag and he watched the potion roll under the interior fence and out of his grasp. He swore and shook his head, ignoring his wounded side and starting to cram his things back into his bag.
He’d only brought one vial — anymore would have been heavier. And he couldn’t deal with heavy. He needed to travel light just in case he needed to get away…
“Stop!” A demon yelled and Chris turned, about to throw it into the magical fence when a demon shimmered in behind him and grabbed both his arms, pinning them. The teenager struggled but couldn’t break free.
“Who are you?” Chris glared him down. “I said who are you?” The demon growled. He backhanded Chris across the face and Chris felt blood in his mouth but still didn’t say anything. These were low-level guard scum in human form. He didn’t have to answer to them.
“Oh, screw this.” Suddenly, he felt a blow to the back of his head and he slumped forward.
One demon grinned to the other over Chris’s lifeless form. “He sure as fuck is pretty enough.”
