Something was strange
Slowly Daniel opened his eyes. Or rather tried to. Nothing happened
“What…?”
Even his voice sounded strange.
Okay. Move…won’t work. Voice...sounds strange. Sight…nope. Sensing…sense…
That was even more disturbing. He didn’t feel good or bad. He couldn’t tell how he felt. He just…didn’t…feel.
Sense…later. Hearing…nothing. Stop, hearing…something
The was something, a voice, unintelligible at the moment but it seemed to approach. Familiar? Somehow…
It’s strange. Okay, check that, been there.
The voice became louder, understandable.
“Yes, Mom, I know I’ve come down with fever. Warmth is fine but these blankets are too heavy, I can’t move!”
He recognized that voice now.
“Sam?”
“Huh? What? Daniel? What are you doing in my bedroom? Stop.”
She made a pause. Daniel could almost hear how she was analyzing her situation. Almost? Daniel would have felt a shudder run down his spine would he have been able to actually feel his spine. He could hear Sam’s thoughts.
The situation got stranger by the minute.
“You’re right, Daniel. It is getting stranger with the minute. Do you remember how…”
Sam’s voice died down. “You haven’t said anything, haven’t you?”
“No. I can do it, too, Sam. Hear your thoughts”
Like an answer some thoughts she certainly didn’t want to be heard crossed her mind. Secrets, dreams, sexual fantasies…STOP!
“Uh, Daniel…”
“Never mind. I heard them but I have forgotten them already!”
He sounded embarrassed. She could hear that he had not forgotten her fantasies. Especially her dreams about him wouldn’t go out of his mind.
“You haven’t.”
“Uhm… no. Did you really dream that about me?”
It wouldn’t leave his mind.
“YES! And I can hear that it turns you on!”
1+1=2, 2+2=4, no that’s no help. 7th root of 1765*pi, calculate, Daniel, CALCULATE
Sam giggled. Men! Though that thought of him being turned on by her fantasies about him was definitly worth some more thoughts...
“Sam? You’re not helping…”
“Hmmmm? Oh, sorry. It’s really difficult. Okay, let’s concentrate.”
Daniel sensed her calling herself to order.
He pulled himself together.
“What is the last thing you can remember, Sam?”
He heard her thoughts and he could sense her reading his own thoughts.
“Oh, I think I knew we remember the same things, and it isn’t helping us one bit.”
Sam felt uneasy.
It had felt odd, almost as if their thoughts were merging. She wasn’t sure if it was that fascinating to have telepathic abilities. Especially because she now could remember two passes through the stargate. Which one was her memory? Oh. That brief thought of the cold of the stargate was threateningly near to freezing ones balls was definitely not hers. To her horror she could not only remember that thought but the actual feeling of freezing ones balls, too.
Daniel had been eavesdropping and she could sense him blushing inwardly.
Before she could utter a comment it got light around her.
After all she was able to see again. Counting the torches on the wall she suggested that nobody had switched on the light but she had opened her eyes. She couldn’t recall having wanted to do that. Besides, she couldn’t move her eyes. And no other part of her body. She felt trapped inside her own body. Panic began to climb up on her. Claustrophobia, not being able to move, the feeling to be crushed started to overwhelm her.
Then there was suddenly a source of calmness besides her. Daniel. She could sense him fighting against her feelings. Calm, secure, safe, he wrapped her into his feelings like into a warm, soft blanket. She let go and snuggled down in his thoughts.
“Thanks, Daniel, I don’t know why…”
“Shhhht, it’s okay.”
Safe and secure.
Grateful she clung to Daniels presence.
Then she noticed something.
“I can sense my body!”
“Me, too!”
She could see the room through Daniels eyes from another perspective. He had to be lying to her left. She could sense his body through his own sensations.
It was hard not to be too curious.
She concentrated on herself. Breathing, heartbeat, the necessary movements of her body seemed to be fully functional. Only the ones she could control seemed to be out cold.
She was now able to hear Daniels breathing next to her. And she could sense some other presence in the room.
BTW, other presence, where were Teal’c and Colonel O’Neill?
Steps approached from the right side.
“Awake? Good! Excellent, to be exact!“
A woman’s voice. What she had said had sounded odd. Sam noticed that she had again shared Daniel’s thoughts. The woman had spoken in an old Gaelic dialect and Daniel had automatically translated.
Sam sensed something pointed pricking the sole of her foot. She winced inwardly. Her body did not move.
Reflexes are out cold, too, she analyzed.
Next to her Daniel winced mentally, too. Sam began to feel very uneasy about this whole situation.
“Are you thinking the same as I do? Dumb question!” Daniel sounded more than worried.
“If this woman is working against us…”
Sam begged he was wrong.
Sam and Daniel soon found out that the woman was able to control their bodies. She had put some kind of crystal to their foreheads that anchored itself rather painfully to their skin.
To their horror Daniel and Sam had to experience that she could conduct their bodies, order them around.
They themselves could only watch from the inside.
The woman lead them, or rather their bodies out of the room they had awoken in and they could see themselves through the other’s eyes.
Their uniforms had vanished. They were barefoot and clad in long, coat-like and elaborately embroidered robes. Sam’s was a cool blue that matched her eyes and hair, Daniel’s was a shining deep green. It felt strange not only to see oneself through the other’s eyes but to know their matching associations, too.
The next room was filled with people.
The woman placed herself in front of them and began to speak with a clear and loud voice.
„Here are my new... toys” She laughed.
„You all can now go back to your rooms and retire. Wait until Graendal calls you again.”
With chasing movements of her arms she shooed the people out of the room.
Daniel noticed that everybody was wearing a crystal like them.
Toys. The thought of being referred to as a toy worried him. And Sam, too.
The room was empty now, safe for them and the woman.
She turned around to the wall on her left and opened some kind of safe. With a sign of her hand she made Sam’s and Daniel’s bodies stand behind her.
„I know you can hear and understand me, Samantha Carter and Daniel Jackson. I am Graendal. A collector of… emotions.” She pointed to the contents of the safe. There was a large casket filled with an uncountable amount of crystals. In contrast to their own ones these were sparkling in fantastic colors.
„These crystals can store strong emotions. Every kind of emotion produces another color. You want to know when they’re filled? When I think that they are.”
Daniel and Sam exchanged horrified thoughts.
„Strong emotions? What’s she going to do to us? We have to find a way to get rid of these crystals!“ This time it was Daniel who was being consumed by panic.
Graendal watched him with an amused expression. “I see you have understood, Daniel Jackson. Panic produces a beautiful yellow, don’t you think?”
She stroked his cheek with an almost loving gesture.
„Let’s get started. Samantha Carter, dear, your robe suits you well, but let me examine you as you are. Daniel Jackson, take off her robe!”
Daniel’s body turned around to Sam and began pulling at the garment.
„Tsk, tsk. Slowly, we’ve got time.“
Daniel’s body obeyed immediately. In slow motion he started opening Sam’s robe and let it slide to the floor. Underneath she was naked.
Sam had no choice but to let it happen. She was raged and ashamed at the same time. Her eyes looked at Daniel all the time, but thank God, he wasn’t showing any reaction. Inside, she could read his thoughts all too well.
Daniel had heard Graendal’s order with horror and embarrassment. He had to watch his hands obey without being able to stop them. He could fell himself brushing Sam’s skin and he had tried everything, he just couldn’t stop looking at her. Embarrassing! Especially when he felt himself becoming aroused by her sight. Not bodily, but in his mind. And he knew Sam knowing it. Embarrassing! Embarrassing! Embarrassing!
That his body didn’t betray him he was more than grateful for.
„She’s beautiful, isn’t she, Daniel Jackson? You want to touch her? Go on, do it!”
Daniel’s hands began to roam over Sam’s body. Shoulders, arms, breasts, light and caressing.
Sam felt the touch but she sensed her body not responding to it. She herself was confused about the scene. On one hand she felt, like Daniel, embarrassed to her core, on the other hand she could not deny that his caresses aroused her. These touches came too near to what she had been dreaming about him.
Daniel was fascinated with his own emotions. To touch Sam in this way filled him with awe. She was so strong, so good, there for him whenever he needed her, an example that had filled him with new hope whenever the situation had looked unsolvable. Then it came to his sense that it wasn’t him, who was touching Sam, but his body under Graendal’s control. A look at Sam’s thoughts showed him that she was as confused about her emotions as he was.
Graendal’s words interrupted his thoughts.
„Well, Daniel Jackson? Does it turn you on to touch her? Yes, it arouses you! Let me see how it turns you on!”
Daniel’s body reacted. He felt his growing erection and how his hands slipped off his robe. God this was even more than embarrassing! Where was the next hole he could vanish into?
The bodily arousal started to cloud his mind.
Sam felt queasy. Her body didn’t react to Daniel’s caresses and even the sight of his erection left her cold. The same time she could do nothing to shut out Daniels emotions. It was an odd feeling to sense his arousal, mental and bodily, through his own thoughts.
She noticed Daniel becoming more and more frustrated with her body not reacting to his touch.
His arousal infected her mentally and being a cold fish on the outside was nerve-racking. She caught herself wishing to press her body to his hands and, even more, to touch him herself.
„Sam...“
Daniel groaned. He felt like he would explode if nothing happened. His frustration reached a new peak when his hand slid between her thighs and found her dry and insensitive.
Sam felt his frustration and whimpered on the betrayal her body committed to her.
Graendal laughed. „Frustration! And on both sides! Fantastic! Now, a new facet. Samantha Carter, you are allowed to touch him and react to him.“
Finally! Like a wave her feelings crushed her. Her body reacted to Daniel’s touch. It felt like a liberation.
Daniel sensed Sam’s arousal in her mind as well as in his hand, when her labia blossomed and she became wet in anticipation.
Sam's hands were roaming over his breast, his back and stomach until they reached his member. He groaned.
„God! Sam!“
For some reason this sobered her.
„Daniel, that’s not me! It’s Graendal!” she uttered with difficulty. The rhythmic movements of Daniels hand between her legs made it rather hard to grab a coherent thought.
„Sam , we have to... uhnnn… to control… God!”
„Control... 1*144 is 144, 2*1444 is…is…288, 3*… 3*144… doesn’t work…my…DANIEL!”
It was impossible to concentrate with Daniels fingers entering her vagina.
Okay, Sam, imagine Jack is here, or, no, Teal’c, better General Hammond is watching…or… my…mother!” That helped. For some seconds
„It’s not enough,” she heard Graendal mutter. “You are allowed to kiss.”
Sam lost it completely. Daniel’s soft lips on her own smashed her last coherent thoughts.
She simply felt. Her tongue entered his mouth and started to explore. The sharp edge of his teeth, his palate, their tongues started dueling. Daniels body pressing into her, rubbing, drove her mad. She wanted to feel him inside. Now. Daniel wanted it, too, she could feel his need, his hunger as clearly as her own.
Daniels mouth left her own and started exploring her body. Daniel could feel every rush of arousal when he hit one of her erogenous zones, but to his and her frustration he never stayed long enough. Sam’s body didn’t mind but Sam was shaking in frustration and desire.
His lips reached her center. He could smell her arousal, his tongue started darting around her clit, dipped into the depths of her vagina. He sensed how close Sam was to an orgasm and how frustrated she was about her body’s betrayal to release her.
„Daniel! I want you!”
Daniel tried to command his body to enter her, but with no success.
„I can’t! SAM!”
Graendal’s deep laughter reached him.
„Lust and frustration, how amusing. You want each other, right? Well, I don’t want the same crystal twice. What can we do? Ah, I know. Samantha Carter you become aware of what is happening. You are aware of what Daniel Jackson wants to do to you. He wants to rape you! Daniel Jackson, you will take her, no matter what happens. Let’s see who will win.”
Sam felt cold. Her thoughts became clear, even though she could still feel Daniel’s arousal. She could sense Daniel’s thoughts clouding, at the same time becoming calculating, sly and vicious. It scared her. She had to go away, away from him.
Her body broke away from his arms and shrunk back. She could see his face, his lips curved in a snarl, his eyes… hunting. She began to panic. She had to run!
A brief glimpse into Daniel’s mind showed her no help. He had lost himself in Graendal’s orders. The need to take her had become his only motive. She tired to cover herself, looking for a way to escape. She watched him switch to hunter-mode and she was the prey. The panic became hard to control, Daniel scared her.
Stop. Afraid of Daniel? Daniel was her friend! There was no reason to be afraid of him. It was Graendal who controlled him.
„Daniel! Wake up! It’s me, Sam! Can you hear me? You do not want to do this! Graendal is trying to control you! Fight her! Daniel!”
She heard Daniel fighting for control.
„Sam! Help me!“
„Daniel, you are frightening me! Do you want to do that?”
„N...no!“
„Then fight!“
Her body betrayed her again. She turned around and ran.
Daniel chased her, hunted her down like a prey. She managed to escape him and ran. Inside she was screaming in horror.
She had felt Daniel's control slip away. Now he had caught her. No way out. Dead end. She had to fight.
Her body turned around and attacked. With her military precision she tried to hurt Daniel. Blow, thrust, kick.
Hurt Daniel, beat him unconscious, destroy Daniel!
„NO!“ Fight it, Sam! She could sense Daniel’s pain when she hit him, She could feel she had broken his left forearm. She tried desperately to stop her body.
Daniel had come to his senses when he felt the pain.
„Sam?“
Shame resonated in his thoughts.
„Sam, please, let it stop!“
The attack went on. Until Daniels body noticed a gap in her defense and threw her against the wall.
Pain washed trough both of them like a heat wave.
„Sam!“
She felt far away, indifferent.
Daniel’s body took his chance and pressed her back against the wall. He held her arms stretched against the wall, nailed them against it with all his strength.
Daniel began to panic. He would never ever rape Sam. Never! Fight! Fight it!
Sam came to her senses to feel Daniel’s knee parting her legs and his member thrusting into her with all his power.
„NOOOOO!“
They both yelled in unison.
Paralyzed with horror Daniel felt the sensations of triumph and sexual arousal wash around him. Sam. No, not Sam, not this way.
Sam felt only the pain. Her muscles had cramped to keep the intruder away. Inside her raged the pain about Daniel’s betrayal. A lost thought tugged at her mind. Daniel had not betrayed her. He had been as betrayed as she had been. Graendal was the offender. Sam clung to this thought. Graendal. She hated Graendal.
„Hate! Another new color! You hate him. You hate Daniel Jackson, don’t you?”
“I hate you, Graendal!“ She couldn’t hear her.
„You will hate him much more, because there will be no end to your torture. He will not find fulfillment!”
Daniel cursed. Almost! Almost he had been able to explode inside her, almost all would have been over. But now he could sense his body standing on the edge to orgasm and not being able to take the last step. He felt his body doing everything to finally reach fulfillment, but he knew from Graendal’s words that is was useless.
Sam whimpered.
She had lost the will to fight.
Daniel’s body tried and tried to reach orgasm. He pushed harder and harder until he heard Sam’s teeth chatter. His skin was wet with sweat and his muscles shook with the strain. Minutes that seemed like hours passed by. How long wanted Graendal to torture them?
Daniel felt his body reaching a point of breaking down when Graendal spoke again.
„That’s enough. This color is perfect!“
She had not allowed him to shoot. Daniel’s body slumped down to the floor, taking Sam’s with him. His broken arm hurt like hell and dull pain pulsed everywhere Sam had hit him. Graendal shooed them back to the room they had awoken in. She unfastened the crystals from their foreheads.
„Let’s see what we will do tomorrow,“ were the last words he heard before he lost the sensation of having a body.
„S..Sam?“
„I’m here, Daniel“
“Sam, I’m sorry...”
“No, Daniel. It wasn’t your fault.”
“But…”
“Don’t do that, Daniel! She wants it! Did you hear her asking me if I hate you? I don’t hate you, Daniel. I hate her. And if you are blaming yourself for what she is doing to us you play directly into her hands.”
“I don’t know if I can do that, Sam.”
“You can, Daniel! Don’t let her break us apart. We have to stick together or else we’ll go crazy.”
“I’ll try.”
Sam could sense Daniel’s self-hate. She could talk! She could forgive, she was the victim. But were she the offender, would she be able to forgive herself? She didn’t know. She was sure that Graendal would try to break them. They should suffer from their guilt. Sam swore that Graendal would not win. Never.
Daniel sensed Sam’s determination and let it infect him. As long as they were together, nothing could happen. He hoped.
The night or whatever daytime it was went rather uneventful. Graendal woke them and handed them a pot with an indefinable substance and the order to eat it all. The stuff tasted awful and Daniel would have vomited had his body allowed it. Half an hour later Graendal sent them back to ‘sleep’.
Daniel felt restless. The feeling of unfinished business, that had come with Graendal's denial to grant him fulfillment hadn’t vanished in his mind. He had tried to distract himself with many things, but nothing really worked. His thoughts ever so often went back to what had happened. Sam felt the same. The memory of her need to touch Daniel, to feel wanted and loved wouldn’t go away. She tried to hide her feelings from Daniel, but had not much success. She knew that Daniel thought about her, too, desired to touch her. There was only one problem. Were those feelings a result of Graendal’s orders and the obedience of their bodies, or did they come from themselves? It was like the question about the chicken and the egg.
After a while they gave in to their fate and covered each other in their emotions and desires. Wanting to love the other without being able to touch, caresses without bodily reaction were frustrating but it helped them feel close.
Graendal’s arrival interrupted their closeness. She placed new crystals to their foreheads and ordered them to get up.
“Samantha Carter, I think today you will get your revenge.”
Sam’s thoughts were in a turmoil. “Revenge? What does that mean? Daniel, I...“
Daniel soothing presence calmed her down.
Her horror grew again when they entered the main hall. The room was empty, safe for a long iron chain with handcuffs that was hanging down from the ceiling and a chest at the wall next to the door. The room was lit by a fire in the fireside and some big bowls on racks in which some fluid was burning.
“Samantha Carter, you will now handcuff Daniel Jackson to that chain.”
Sam’s body stepped forward and grabbed Daniel’s arm. She handcuffed him and then walked over to where the chest stood and grabbed the chain which’s other end was fastened on a hook at the wall. She pulled the chain until Daniel was hanging on the cuffs and only his toes were touching the floor. In her mind she could see how Daniel was desperately trying to change his position to lessen the pull on his broken arm.
Her body turned around to Graendal and waited for new orders.
“Open the chest.”
To Sam’s horror the chest contained several torture devices.
“Take the first thing you see and use it well,” came Graendal’s instruction.
Sam saw herself grab a whip.
She got sick.
“Daniel…”
She sensed his horror and then the terrible pain when the whip hit his naked back. The sharp-edged cord left a deep cut to his skin that immediately began to bleed.
Daniel’s body endured every blow without showing any emotion but the crystal on his forehead burned in a deep red. Sam tried everything to shut out his pain, his screams shattered her soul. She had to stop, she had to help Daniel, to heal him. Her helplessness drove her mad.
Without the crystal Daniel would have been unconscious since the fifth stroke but this way the torture didn’t end. With Graendal’s sign Sam’s hands grabbed a small pouch out of the chest.
Half blind by rage and helplessness Sam noticed too late what was in the pouch. Her hands were filled with salt and before she could even try to react she started rubbing it into Daniel’s wounds. This time it was impossible to ignore Daniel’s pain. She started to scream, not able to feel or think about anything but the pain.
Without them noticing Graendal had pulled an iron pole out of the chest and was not heating it’s flat and ornamented end in the flames of the fireplace. She started pulling it out to hand it to Sam when she heard a turmoil outside.
Graendal shoved the pole black into the fire and signed to Sam to release Daniel and put back on the robes, that had been stuffed in a corner of the room.
Only seconds later the door at the other side of the room burst open .
Colonel O’Neill and Teal’c stormed in. Daniel and Sam stood with expressionless faces behind a woman dressed in precious robes.
“What’s going on here?” the woman asked in a commanding voice.
“We are here to take our friends back with us. Release them!”
“But they are free! And they want to stay with me.”
“I don’t believe you. Sam and Daniel never would stay here voluntarily.”
The woman smiled. “You are wrong. Daniel Jackson would put his hand into the fire for me, wouldn’t you?
O’Neill’s sharp answer to that got stuck in his throat as he watched Daniel stepping forward and put his hand into the fire of one of the rack-torches. And refused to pull it back. His face remained expressionless.
The stench of burned flesh drifted through the room. O’Neill jumped forward and pulled Daniel’s hand out of the fire, putting it out with his jacket.
“Daniel! Are you nuts?!”
Daniel didn’t react.
“The crystals!” Teal’c sounded terrified. When he looked at the Jaffa, O’Neill knew that there was something more than wrong here. Teal’c’s face was white with terror.
Graendal’s voice sounded bored.
“All right, take them, if you wish. They have… served me well.”
With that she turned around and left the room.
One moment O’Neill looked like he was going to follow her, then he turned around and led Sam and Daniel out of the door. The reacted like puppets.
He hoped that it was only shock.
Minutes later they tumbled out of the stargate inside the Cheyenne Mountain Complex.
“Infirmary! Hurry!” O’Neill barked. Both he and Teal’c had noticed that Daniel’s back was bleeding and suspected something they wouldn’t like.
The reality excelled everything.
Dr Frasier gasped in terror when she first saw Daniel’s back. The skin was a bloody mass, with some tiny bone fragments sticking out. Daniel’s hand was burned badly but the worst was the total unresponsiveness of both patients.
“The crystals are the cause for that.”
Teal’c pointed to Daniel’s forehead. O’Neill noticed with shock that his hand was trembling.
“You know something like that?”
“Yes.” Teal’c’s voice sounded hoarse. “The Goa’uld have possessed them long time ago, but they destroyed them.”
“Why?”
“Too cruel.”
O’Neill’s guts wrenched. If it was to cruel for the Goa’uld it had to be something horrifying.
Teal’c made a strange gesture over Daniel’s forehead, then plucked the crystal from his skin.
“Under his skin is some sort of socket we have to get rid of.”
Dr Frasier felt Daniels skin, then took a tiny scalpel and made a short cut. After a light pressure the socket slid out into her hand.
Daniel seemed to explode. Eyes wide open he started to scream. He lashed out in all directions and was nearly impossible to control.
“Pass me a sedative, quickly! It took minutes until Daniel slumped down unconscious.
“Uhm ,Teal’c? Sam’s crystal is changing it’s color. It’s yellow now. Is that normal?”
„Twin crystals! We have to remove it! Quickly!”
The crystal was dazzling yellow when they had finally removed it and it’s socket.
“DANIEL!” Carter’s scream let Dr Frasier stumble backwards, the socket still in her hand.
“DANIEL! DANIEL! DANIEL!“
Teal’c grabbed her chin and turned her head so that she could see Daniel in the next bed.
“Daniel…”
Sam calmed down, then began to cry. She rolled herself together to a tight ball and was shaken by cramp-like sobs.
Teal’c stroked her hair with tender hands. O’Neill raised an eyebrow in bewilderment.
“It’s over, Captain Carter, it’s over. You are back home. You are safe.”
Sam’s sobs weakened. Teal’c sat by her side until she fell asleep with one of Dr Frasier’s injections.
The medical team needed hours to examine and tend to Daniel’s and Sam’s wounds.
“Teal’c? I want some explanations.” General Hammond stood in the doorway of the infirmary.
„Me, too!“ called Dr Frasier. “What has happened to Daniel is… indescribable!”
Teal’c cleared his throat. “These crystals are called Puppet-makers by the Goa’uld. They store the emotions of the person who wears them. Different emotions make different colors.”
“What is yellow?” O’Neill asked.
“Panic.”
“Oh.”
“Why puppets?” General Hammond wanted to know.
“Because the crystals separate mind and body. That woman had total control over Daniel’s and Sam’s bodies. She gave Daniel the order to put his hand into the fire and he obeyed. Daniel’s mind was captured inside his body. He has experienced the pain but was unable to react to it. He couldn’t do anything.”
Teal’c sounded pained.
Hammond had turned white. “What did you mean by ‘twin crystals’? he asked with a small voice. It couldn’t be coming worse.
“Dr Jackson’s and Captain Carter’s crystals were linked. What one went through, the other felt, too.”
O’Neill turned green and ran out of the room. Some minutes later he returned, still pale. “Sorry.”
Hammond nodded. He was a little green around his nose himself.
“Teal’c, not that I want to know more but… what else can you tell us?”
“It’s quite possible that Captain Carter was the one who… whipped Dr. Jackson, Sir.”
Dr Frasier groaned. „Yes, that would…” She swallowed. “Captain Carter has been raped, Sir. We have found bruises that confirm that.”
“Raped? By… no.”
“Daniel Jackson, Sir.”
“No!”
There is no doubt, Sir. We have found…”
“God!” O’Neill hid his face in his hands.
“Sam will kill him for that.”
One of the nurses interrupted them.
“Dr Frasier? There… You should see this. What shall we do?”
Frasier stood up and entered the infirmary.
O’Neill, Teal’c and Hammond followed her on the heels.
“Colonel? I don’t think she will do that.”
In front of them was Daniel, wrapped in bandages like a mummy and next to him Sam had rolled herself together on his blanket. She held him tight, her head buried in his arms. Both were sound asleep.
“That is… I don’t get it.”
Two days later at least Sam was back on her feet. Daniel was still unconscious, pumped with painkillers and sedatives. She never left him. Nobody had managed to get her telling what had happened on the other side of the stargate.
Dr Frasier examined the crystals. O’Neill and Teal’c watched her and Sam in turns. Suddenly Frasier screamed and threw the crystal away.
“Heaven!”
“Dr Frasier? Are you alright?”
“Yes, yes. I’m fine. Teal’c, is there a possibility to play these things?”
„Yes, that was one of their purposes.”
“God, now I know why Sam doesn’t want to talk about what happened.”
“Why?”
“I have sensed what she had been going through. She has hurt Daniel this badly.” Dr Frasier bend over on her chair. “God!”
Behind her Sam whimpered under the pressure of her memories.
One day later Dr Frasier was untying Daniel’s bandages.
“That doesn’t look good. He will carry scars on his back and with his hand… I fear it will stay crippled.”
“NO!” Sam jumped up. “I will not allow that! I don’t want him to be reminded on what I have done, no what she has done to him!”
She ran out of the room.
“Sam!”
Only minutes later she returned with the Goa’uld healing device.
“Daniel? I promise I will help you!”
Without hesitating she pulled over the device and concentrated. It worked immediately. A warm glow emanated from the quartz in the middle and when Sam started waving her hand above Daniel’s, the skin started to regenerate. Sam motioned to Teal’c to turn Daniel onto his stomach. The device healed his back.
Exhausted Sam broke down.
“Sam? You alright? The use of that thing hasn’t been so exhausting before!“
„No, it’s only... the memory…” Sam trembled.
Daniel began to move.
“Daniel!” Sam was wide awake again.
“Daniel? How do you feel?”
“Sam?”
“Yes.”
“Are we… free?”
“Yes, Daniel.”
“Free…” Daniel fell back to sleep.
Sam turned around to the others with tears in her eyes. “Free…”
The day turned slowly into weeks and Sam and Daniel slowly recovered from their physical wounds and were allowed back to work at the stargate center. Hammond didn’t allow them to go back on a mission though the gate.
They had built a fragile net of friendship, habit and guilt around them. O’Neill called it an ‘egg-dance on hot coals’. The constant worry and caution of the others when they were around, the unspoken thought between themselves didn’t make it easier.
“We have to talk.”
“We can’t go on like this.”
Both talked at the same time when another unimportant incident and a careless word had brought up the memories again.
Outside on the corridor voices approached. O’Neill and Teal’c rumbled into the room, SG2 at their heels.
“Oh, boy, people, you’ve really missed something!”
“O’Neill.”
“That people on that strange planet did look confused when Ferretti…” O’Neill couldn’t stop laughing.
“O’Neill!”
“Yes, Teal’c? Oh, boy!”
Teal’c pointed his head at Sam and Daniel who looked rather pained.
“Wha..? Oh.” O’Neill sobered up.
“Uhm, sorry, looks like my brain isn’t on-line at the moment. Oh, damn!” he turned around and left.
“He’s missing you.” Teal’c looked after the Colonel and SG2. ‘I miss you, too’, they could read it in his eyes. He shrugged and followed the others down the corridor.
“We have to talk. But not here.”
Daniel nodded. “Chinese? Today? My apartment?”
Sam agreed before she could back off. “Eight o’clock?”
“Eight.”
At eight it knocked at Daniel’s door.
Sam didn’t look at him when she entered.
“I had to force myself to come.”
“I understand.”
“Daniel…”
“Shhhh.”
It knocked again.
“Delivery service.”
Daniel was right.
Silently he paid the bill then pointed to the living room table and started unpacking the bags.
They ate in silence.
Sam helped to clean up.
Then she just stood there. Silently. After a while she walked to the window and stared out into the evening.
“Daniel, I can’t do this any longer…”
“Sam…”
“I feel so guilty! I know that your back gives you a lot of pain and the hand…”
“Sam, don’t.”
“What?”
“Do you remember what you said to me? If we feel guilty for what she has done to us, she will win.”
Sam nodded.
“It’s just do damn difficult…”
“You have healed me, Sam.”
Daniel stepped behind her and placed his hands on her shoulders.
“Without you I wouldn’t have made it. I would have given up.”
“Daniel!”
Sam threw herself around and grabbed his shirt. Daniel held her tight and felt her shaking with sobs.
Sam clung to Daniel as if she would drown without him. There they were again, the safety and security. Daniel.
Slowly she clamed down. Nobody of them could tell later how long they had been standing there, hugging and safe.
Sam felt Daniel resting his chin on her head, she heard his heartbeat, his breathing. Feeling. The last time they had been this near there had been no feeling, only thinking and wishing.
The memory of that desire to be loved came back in a rush.
No, the guilt. Daniel would never want her like that again. She had nearly killed him, hurt him in an unbearable way. He would not forgive her. How could he? He would hate her. But… they were standing here like this. Safe and sound. How?
“Sam?”
She heard his voice from his breast, lower, deeper, like it had been then, in his mind…
“Sam, I feel you…”
Sam concentrated on her emotions. This time it were her emotions that told her that he didn’t hate her. Memories. Did he recall their last embrace in their minds like she did now? The desire? She pressed herself against him and felt something… in his pocket? No, that was...
Daniel pushed her away and turned around. His breath sounded strained.
“Sam, you should go now…”
Sam was lost in thought. He didn’t hate her. He… wanted her.
Slowly she stepped forward and slipped her arms around his waist from behind. Carefully she toched him through the this cloth of his trousers. Daniel gasped.
He turned around in her arms and stared at her.
“After all I’ve done to you…”
“After all I’ve done to you…” they spoke at the same time.
Then Daniel talked for them both. “After all Graendal has done to us we still belong together.”
Sam grinned and bended forward to kiss him.
His answer literally swept her off her feet. He lifted her up and carried her to his bedroom.
Slowly they peeled each other out of their clothes. He knew every inch of her body, from her memory as well as from his. He knew exactly what he had to do to make her happy. He knew what she wanted him to do. This time there were no puppets, obeying to orders, this time it were Sam and Daniel, reading the desires and wishes from each other’s eyes. United, mental and physical. Bonded. Whole.
When they entered stargate center the next morning everybody knew immediately that the egg-dancing was over. Both emanated peace and calmness, an easiness around each other that their comrades had missed too long.
O’Neill was nearly floored when both fell upon him and started to pester him about the oh-so-funny yesterday mission.
“What has happened?” he asked suspiciously.
“We have… talked.” Sam answered.
“It hasn’t killed us, now we’re stronger.” Daniel quipped.
“O’Neill?” General Hammond entered the room.
“Oh, Captain, Doctor… uhmm, this is about…what happened to… perhaps you want to leave…”
“Shoot, General. We’re okay again, “ Daniel grinned.
Perplexed, the General stared at him
“Well, fine… Okay. SG5 have returned from their last mission to the planet, where… uhm.”
Daniel became serious. “And?”
“Nothing ‘and’. Nobody there. The safe was empty, the buildings abandoned. They have searched the whole planet for two weeks now and found not the slightest trace of anybody. Only one thing they brought back from there: your uniforms, they found them neatly folded in a corner.”
“Damn!”
Daniel and Sam exchanged a glance.
“General, we want to report back to duty. We are physically and psychically well to go back to missions through the gate.”
The General glanced at O’Neill and got a confirming nod.
“All right. Let Dr Frasier sign a certificate that you are fir for service, then we’ll see.”
“Thanks, General. Consider it done.”
Two days later SG1 was complete again and on their way to a new mission.
