Summary: the crew find Malcolm after his disappearance and he’s not the same.

Archer rubbed his eyes and sat down heavily on the bed. Another negotiation gone well; if very tiring and vexing all the same. The Vulcans and Andorians had finally come to a truce of sorts, with much help from Archer. Both species had come to realise that aggression was not in the best interests of their peoples and had decided that it was time to finally set things straight – much to Starfleet’s delight.
No, it was not the trying schedule that got to him. It was seeing some other person at the tactical station. Malcolm had disappeared on a routine inspection of an M-class planet on the very edge of known Space. One minute, he was there looking for the Utrillium vane that they had detected. Next minute, he was gone; not a trace of him left. Starfleet had launched a huge investigation, but to no avail. Nothing was found.
Archer sighed. Nothing. Not even after a year of searching had not even a scrap of information had been found. Every single investigation had come to the same conclusion; that Malcolm had just disappeared.
Enterprise’s captain slowly got undressed and got into bed, and like all the nights before thought the same thing: We’ve missed something.

Next morning, Archer appeared on the bridge as usual, glancing over at tactical to see Lieutenant Hess, now head of security, watching her screen as the diagnostic she was running finished giving her some answer to do with the Armoury.
As usual, the captain felt a slight twinge when he saw it; an ever-present reminder of what they had lost.
“Captain. We are presently on a course of 460.5 at warp 3.2.”
“Thank you Travis.” Archer replied, sitting down in his chair-something he rarely did.
He knew that trajectory. It would take them past the planet where Reed disappeared…
“Travis.”
“Yes sir?”
“When you get to planet number 263 stop and move into orbit.”
“Sir?”
“We’re going to have one last look.”

Down on the planet Commander Trip Tucker gave a worried glance at his superior officer. Archer had not been the same since the kidnapping. His captain had been combed the area several times in the last year and had found nothing. Trip suspected that it wasn’t the hope of finding Malcolm alive that kept Archer going, rather that it was the desire to find out what had happened to him.
The engineer made his way over the rocky and slightly green terrain towards the site where Reed had vanished. Trip understood Archer’s need to find out what had happened, but he had resigned himself a while back that they weren’t going to find anything.
“Cap’n.” Trip said tentively.
“Yes Trip?”
“Cap’n -Jon- I…..don’t think there is anything to find.”
Archer sighed.
“I know. I just … I have to try.”
Trip nodded understandingly just as Archer’s com beeped.
“Captain” T’pol’s neutral voice was loud in the still air.
“Archer here, what’s up?”
“I and Ensigns Mayweather and Sato may have found something of interest Captain.”
“We’ll be right there. Archer out”

Twenty minutes later Archer and Tucker found themselves about two meters away from were Reed was last seen waiting for T’pol to explain what was so interesting about the place.
“Come on T’pol, what’s all the fuss about.”
T’pol kneeled onto the ground and to the area just in front of them.
“The ground here has been disturbed. There are signs of a struggle.”
Archer closed his eyes for a split second; I can’t believe we found something, after all this time.
“Signs of a struggle.” He repeated.
“That’s not the most fascinating thing though.” Interjected Mayweather.
“You see that there is no over-laying dust or anything like that? It means that this was made recently.” Hoshi said.
“How recently?” Trip asked.
“Within the last eight to twelve hours.” T’pol replied.
“Where was the victim running from?”
“Nowhere Captain. The victim appears to of just materialised and then struggled. However the victim was dragged off about two kilometres to your right and then vanishes. Due to the wind blown look of the area, the most logical reasoning is that he was put on to a ship.”
“Is it the same here?” asked Trip.
“No. What happed here is probably the same thing that happed to Lieutenant Reed.”
Archer couched on the ground opposite T’pol and shifted the dirt around. He stopped when his fingers uncovered a perfectly shaped square embedded in the ground.
“Hey, everyone come and look at this.”
Everyone leaned over the captain as he brushed more dirt off his find.
“What is it?” asked Hoshi.
“I don’t know…” Archer replied looking at the square intently. Puzzled by the oddness of it all he pressed the square hard with his thumb.
Suddenly there was a flash of bright light and then total darkness. Archer didn’t move a muscle as his eyes grow accustom to the much lower light in their new surroundings, given off by a long, thin light bulb that flickered every few seconds.
“Everyone ok?”
The rest of the group murmured their assurances and all of them began to search their surroundings. They were in a long narrow corridor that supported a creepy look from the cast of green light from the bulb above them. The walls were old and had the distinct look of a derelict hospital about them.
“Well…I think we’ve discovered how people vanish and reappear with out a trace.” Tucker said quietly, feeling nervous in the oppressing silence.
Archer gave him a wry grin and motioned down the down. Meaning: let’s take a look around.
The five of them walked down the corridor, careful to make themselves as quiet as possible in case there were other people around. But the more they looked the further Archer came to believe that the place was abandoned.
They passed several rooms while walking through the corridors. Most contained beds; others contained bits of machinery that Archer didn’t want to know what they were used for.
The more they saw, the bigger the sense of dread Archer felt. It was increased ten-fold when they saw a room with rather sharp looking instruments in it; along with what looked like old blood on the walls.
Did Malcolm come here? What did they do to him? Is he still alive? These questions plagued his mind as they continued to explore. He was sure that the others were thinking the same things too.
After a while they came into a very large, circular room containing many chairs. To their horror, each chair was occupied by a body. Every one of them was cold and lifeless, supporting injuries from where they struggled against their shackles.
“Looks like no-one came in here willingly.” Tucker said quietly.
Archer ignored Trip’s comment and walked along the rows of bodies, each one appeared to of died during some sort of surgery. The thought of horrible experiments came to mind and he prayed that Reed had not gone through it.
“Captain, I’m picking up a life sign.”
Everyone stared at T’pol in disbelief.
“You’re kidding me Right?”
“No Captain. The sign seems to be coming from over the far side.”
Archer, being the nearest, got there first, the rest hot on his heels. T’pol looked at the bodies nearest the wall, scanning them with her triquarter.
“It’s not any of them.”
“Not any of them? It has to be, they are the only ones here!” Trip exclaimed.
Archer ignored the ensuing argument amongst his officers, more interested in the familiar square he had just found on the wall. Pressing it, a part of the wall slide open to reveal a room that was probably the most horrible thing he had seen in his entire life.
The room was clearly an operating room, numerous trays filled with an assortment of Knives and other unpleasant looking tools. The trays surrounded a table on which a body lay, hooked up to many different machines. The most prominent was the one attached to the head.
Archer stepped into the room, who seeing the slow rise and fall the bodies fragile chest, knew that this was the survivor. Coming up beside it, Archer stared in horror at the deathly white face below him, a face that he knew so well…
“Malcolm…”
