“Lois, Clark, remember the bus leaves here at 7 AM sharp tomorrow morning,” Perry announced as the majority of the newsroom crew was preparing to leave for the day.
“Perry, do we have to?” Clark asked. Lois noted the definite whine in her partner’s voice. Not that she was feeling any different. Neither of them wanted to spend the weekend on a company retreat in the Kirby Mountains but the publisher was footing the bill and was insisting that senior staff from each of the departments attend. Lois knew she qualified being the number one Kerth winner in the newsroom and Clark was invited because he was her partner, but still… a weekend of touchy feely get-in-touch-with-your-inner-self out in the woods? She’d rather see her dentist for a root canal and based on how Clark had been whining, he felt the same.
“Now kids,” Perry said, hands raised in a placating mode. “You know this isn’t my idea. Stern wants us to go through this and that’s what we’re going to do. So I expect to see you bright and early with bells on, okay?”
“Okay,” Lois agreed. Clark just glowered then his shoulders sagged in resignation.
“Clark, I thought farm boys loved the great outdoors,” Lois commented, walking with her partner to the elevators.
“Yeah, but they prefer to sleep in their own beds, too,” Clark responded. “I’m just tired, that’s all,” Clark said. “I still… I just wish I’d been able to do something more for Mayson.”
“Clark, we did do something. We found out who killed her, remember?” she reminded him. Clark hadn’t been quite himself since the assistant D.A.’s death in a car bombing. A death they had both witnessed. Mayson had died in Clark’s arms.
“I know,” Clark said. “But I still…”
“Maybe this weekend isn’t such a bad idea,” she suggested. “Get out of town, away from things.”
“Maybe,” Clark conceded. But Lois could tell he wasn’t convinced the retreat was a good idea. As much as Lois hated it too, she realized she was going to have to work this weekend to cheer him up. He was no fun when he was depressed. But he had looked so cute in those leather pants…

“Mom, have you any idea where my old backpack is?” Clark called out to his mother. Martha stuck her head out of the kitchen.
“Have you looked in the attic?” she asked. A swoosh of air and her son was back in the farmhouse living room, a worn aluminum frame hiking pack in his hand. At his feet was a sleeping bag and light tent.
“Thanks.”
“Now, what do you need that old thing for, anyway?” Martha asked.
Clark sighed. “Mister Stern, the publisher, is sending a bunch of us to a retreat. I figure I’d better bring my own tent and sleeping bag. I’d rather my roommate not wake up and find me floating in my sleep.”
“I thought you outgrew that?” his father asked.
Clark shrugged. “It still happens when I’m stressed. And this has been a really bad week.”
“Well, come and sit down for supper,” Martha ordered. “Things always look better on a full stomach.”

Lois went through her closet for something to wear to the retreat. Jeans, shorts, t-shirts and sweatshirts, a good pair of athletic shoes. She considered bringing something a little fancier but decided against it. A couple sets of underwear, a pair of pajamas, and finally a swim suit and cover-up. Her hairbrush and deodorant would get packed up in morning. She grabbed her old hiking pack and stuffed her clothes into it. She also grabbed her old sleeping bag and her two-person tent.
The last thing she wanted this weekend was to share a cabin with Agnes from advertising or Melanie from production. At least she didn’t have to worry about sharing with Cat – the woman had moved to Newstime while the Daily Planet was shut down. But then again, if she had been assigned to share a cabin with Cat, odds were that Cat would go prowling and Lois would have the cabin to herself anyway.
Her packing done, Lois sat back and smiled as she remembered the last time she’d been on a campout with someone other than Lucy. It had been in college. The college newspaper staff had all gone together. Paul Bender, the paper editor, had finally noticed her and was spending time with her to the disgust of her dorm-mate, Linda King. Lois had hoped Paul’s attention would go further than platonic, that he would invite her to spend time alone with him, but Linda had seemed determined that wouldn’t happen.
Later Lois found out why – Linda and Paul had been a ‘thing’. She’d been such a fool. But she hadn’t gotten rid of the tent and backpack.

Perry looked askance at both his star reporters, both of whom brought backpacks and tents with them.
“The campground has assigned cabins and beds with mattresses. It even has indoor plumbing,” the older man announced.
“I don’t do well with roommates,” Clark said slowly, almost as though he was embarrassed by the admission.
“Uh huh…” Perry looked over at Lois and waited.
“Um, if we’re at a campground, we should be camping, roughing it, getting back to nature. Not living in the lap of luxury.”
“Riiiight,” Perry drawled. “And the King is alive and well and running a burger stand in Detroit.”
He waved them off to their seats and finished counting heads. Everyone Stern had invited was present and accounted for, including various significant others and Jimmy Olsen. Twenty in all. Perry settled into his seat next to Alice and gave the bus driver the go-ahead.
They were off.

“You don’t do well with roommates?” Lois asked Clark. “Since when?”
“Since…forever?”
“You don’t snore,” she pointed out to him. “I don’t think you walk in your sleep…”
“And how would you know?” Jimmy asked from the seat behind her. Ralph was sitting beside him.
“We’ve been on stakeouts, silly,” Lois retorted. “We’ve had weeks where we spent more time sleeping in my car than in our own beds.”
“Ohhh, that sounds fun,” Ralph said with a definite leer in his voice.
“Keep that up and you’ll be the first one off the bus – and into an ambulance,” Lois warned. She turned back to Clark. “Well?”
“Well, why did you bring a tent and sleeping bag?” Clark asked back. “You’ve never struck me as the ‘roughing it’ type.”
“How little you know, Farm Boy,” Lois came back. “I used to go camping all the time in college. I still go camping with Lucy.”
“When?” Clark asked.
“What?”
“When’s the last time you went camping with Lucy?”
“Ohhh…” Lois began and realized it had been at least a year, maybe even two, since she and her sister had taken off for the weekend camping. “Well, we used to go camping. Before she got so busy.”
“Uh huh,” Clark said with a chuckle.
“Well, I did,” Lois said defensively. “We used to go camping not far from where we’re going. I can show you some good places.”
“Lo-is, you wore heels when we went looking for Camden,” he reminded her.
“I was in a hurry,” she explained.
“You were in such a hurry that you nearly broke your ankle?”
“And you’ve never been in a hurry?” she retorted.
“Children…” Perry’s voice warned from his seat in the front. “Save it for the retreat, okay? They have professionals there.”
Lois folded her arms over her chest and slumped in her seat. She simply knew that Clark and Perry were laughing at her and she hated being laughed at. There wasn't a lot she could do to Perry, but Clark…? He was going to rue the day.

The campground was pleasantly wooded and she realized it really was one of the camps where her parents sent her and Lucy when they were in grade school. Counselors in the ubiquitous khaki shorts, shirts and whistles showed everyone to their assigned cabins. The few married couples were assigned together but everyone else was paired off with a same-sex cabin mate. As predicted, Lois was assigned to share with Melanie Mayburn, a middle-aged senior manager from the production department.
Clark was assigned to room with Jimmy.
Lois spotted Clark hefting his backpack and heading away from the cabins. Jimmy was looking after him, obviously confused.
“I thought he was kidding about not wanting a room mate,” Jimmy complained.
“I’ll make sure he doesn’t get lost,” Lois promised, hurrying after Clark.
She knew which trail he’d taken. It lead to an area that, at least when she was a girl, was set up for tent camping. The brochure she’d skimmed on the bus indicated it was still used for that.
The path seemed steeper than it had been the last time she was there. She figured Clark couldn’t be too far ahead of her, but she didn’t hear him on the trail. After several minutes she got to the tent site.
A tent was already set up in the clearing and Clark was nowhere to be seen. Had he decided to go beyond the ‘official’ tent site? And if he had, whose tent was it that was in the clearing?
“Clark?” she called. No answer. She checked the tent. It was Clark's old backpack inside the tent along with his jeans, shirt and shoes. How had he set the tent up so fast? And why were his clothes in the tent? And then, where was that radio she was hearing? The sound was too soft for her to pinpoint it but it almost sounded like it was coming from Clark’s backpack and that was against the retreat rules – no outside communication, no phones, no radios, no TVs. Even books were frowned on, but she’d brought one anyway. Maybe Clark had brought a radio against orders.
Lois shrugged and dropped her own backpack to the ground. The section of the clearing a few feet away from Clark's tent was the next best place to pitch a tent - flat and level with only a few rocks she kicked aside. Setting out the ground tarp and tent didn’t take that long. Like Clark had, she put her backpack inside the tent for later.
"Clark?" she called again. Still no answer. There were only two trails leading out from the clearing - one back to the cabins and the other leading further into the forest. Lois knew Clark hadn't gotten past her on the trail from the cabins, therefore…
-o-o-o-
Clark had no interest in sharing a cabin with Jimmy. He liked Jimmy, but sleeping in close quarters with him was not something Clark had any interest in doing, especially since he knew he'd been floating in his sleep ever since Mayson's murder. Clark still had nightmares about it only sometimes it was Lois he wasn't able to save from the car bomb. He'd woken up screaming Lois’s name more than once in the past week. He certainly didn’t want anyone around if it happened again.
He'd set up his tent at super-speed, listening to the radio he'd brought with him, against the rules of the retreat. Only the camp counselors were allowed phones or radios. But it wouldn't do for Superman to not deal with emergencies. Clark had the radio turned on in his backpack, the volume set on low. With super-hearing he would be able to hear it from nearly anywhere in the camp.
He was finished setting up when he heard Lois coming up the path from the cabins. He also heard the announcement of a train derailment north of Metropolis. He ran into the brush and spun into the Suit. Then he was off to help with the train.
It was far worse than the initial reports indicated. A tour bus had gotten caught on the tracks and the commuter train had plowed through it, going off the rails. Miraculously, there were people alive in what remained of the bus, but freeing them from the debris had left him covered in blood and gore. Opening the derailed train cars so emergency crews could get to the injured only added more filth to his uniform and exposed skin.
Soon only the dead were left and Superman bid the emergency workers good-by before speeding away. With any luck, no one would have noticed that Clark Kent had gone missing from the retreat.
He was in luck. The area where he’d pitched his tent was devoid of people, although another tent had appeared not far from his. Lois was walking one of the trails but she didn’t seem worried. The retreat organizers seemed to be chivvying everyone else into their cabins.
There was a lake no more than a mile from the campsite, although the trail meandered enough that the distance was far longer by foot. He dove into the lake, Suit and all, to wash the blood off. After a few minutes, he popped out of the lake and spun out of the suit. The spinning motion wrung much of the water out of the fabric and the judicious use of heat vision finished the drying.
But he still didn’t feel clean.
Clark folded up the Suit and hid it under a pile of rocks. Then he dove back into the lake. The water was pleasantly cool against his skin even though it was probably far too cold for a normal person to go swimming.
He floated on his back for a while, oblivious to the fact that he was naked in the water. It felt good. Floating in water actually took more effort that floating on air – his dense molecular structure, coupled with low amounts of body fat, made it hard for him to keep afloat in fresh water but it reminded him of summer days swimming in the old quarry when he was a kid. Before he had powers, before he had a job and responsibilities, before Superman. And then there was Lois. Just thinking about her made him aroused and the water wasn’t nearly cold enough to stop it.
Clark sensed Lois’s presence just before he heard her call his name. Her voice broke his reverie and he found himself flailing in the water – just before he sank beneath the surface.
-o-o-o-
Lois remembered the little lake just off the trail. She and Lucy had gone swimming there on their last camping trip. The lake had been damned cold, but it had been a scorching hot day. Today was cool and overcast. Certainly too cold to go swimming in a cold lake.
The trail was steeper than she remembered and took longer than she wanted. There was still no sign of Clark. How her partner had managed to get his tent put up and disappear up the trail before she got there still bothered her. But it was just another one of those little mysteries that irked her about him. One moment they could be having a conversation and then next he was pulling a disappearing act Houdini would be proud of.
She rounded the last curve of the trail to the lake and looked out over the water. It was just as she remembered except for someone floating in the cold water. Clark was naked and floating on his back, his shaft proud and erect as a ship’s mast. Startled, she called to him.
He disappeared underwater with a splash. And he didn’t come back up.
“Clark!” she screamed. He wasn’t coming back up. She pulled off her shoes and dove into the cold water, swimming toward where she’d last seen him. She dove beneath the surface, trying to see him in the murky water. She couldn’t see him. She couldn’t see anything. Then she realized she didn’t know which way was up. She tried to remember what she was told to do in such a case – relax and let your buoyancy carry you to the surface.
She held her breath as long as she could, but she didn’t break the surface. Then she began to panic. The stories always said ‘your life passes before your eyes’ in situations like this. Her life didn’t pass before her eyes, only regrets – she hadn’t won the Pulitzer, and she hadn’t made love to Clark.
She felt a strong hand on her arm and found herself on the surface.
“Lois?” Clark asked, water streaming down his face. Her teeth started chattering from the cold. “Are you okay? Why did you jump in? This water’s freezing.”
“Yyou di…din’t come up…” she said, spitting out water.
“Let’s get you out of this water,” he suggested. She found herself being propelled toward the shore, but she didn’t feel Clark’s legs moving against her as he swam. It was almost like flying.
He set her on her feet a few feet from shore so she could walk out of the water. She stumbled to the shore and sat down on a log. She couldn’t stop shivering or coughing. But she noticed that Clark didn’t even have goose bumps from the cold.
“Uh, Lois, could you turn around while I get dressed?” Clark asked. She nodded and turned away from him, even though she knew his clothes weren’t anywhere in sight.
After a few moments she heard Clark say: “You can turn around now.”
She turned to see that he was wearing the same jeans, shirt, and shoes he’d been wearing on the bus. The same clothes she was certain she had seen neatly folded in his tent.
“How?” she muttered in confusion. Her teeth started chattering again and his eyes widened in obvious consternation. Suddenly he had a blanket in his hands and he wrapped it around her.
“Lois, we have to get you out of those wet clothes and warmed up,” Clark said. He sounded worried.
“I… I’ll bbe okay,” she said though chattering teeth.
“Lois, please.”
She nodded and pulled her wet shirt off, followed by her dripping jeans. She hugged the blanket to her as Clark picked the wet clothes off the ground.
“Maybe you should take off the bra and panties, too,” he suggested.
She was already feeling warmer under the blanket but Clark was right. Her bra and panties were also soaked, dripping rivulets down her belly and thighs. “No peeking,” she ordered.
“I promise,” Clark said.
She allowed her bra to drop and stepped out of her white cotton panties. “I should have worn my swimsuit but I wasn't expecting to go swimming.”
“I’m sorry,” Clark said.
“I thought you were in trouble when you didn’t come up.”
“I’m a pretty strong swimmer,” Clark said. “And I can hold my breath a long time.”
“So, you always go skinny dipping in freezing lakes?” she asked.
A blush crawled up his face.
“Sorry…”
“Don’t be,” Lois said. Then she thought, ‘you have no idea how much I wanted gravity to win that first day I came to pick you up.’ Then her eyes widened in horror as she realized she had said it aloud.
She hugged the blanket closer.
“I need to get you someplace warmer,” Clark said. “Can you walk?”
She nodded, reaching for her shoes. Clark knelt down and slipped her shoes on her feet. Then he gathered her clothes under one arm and put his other around her waist to support her.
Her muscles were so tight from being chilled that she could hardly move but Clark was surprisingly strong. He nearly carried her down the trail to the tents.
“My own personal Superman,” Lois murmured as they arrived at the clearing.
Clark set her on her feet and ducked inside her tent. Lois heard him rustling against the nylon of the tent then: “I’ve got your sleeping bag ready. That should help you warm up.”
“It’s going to take more than that,” she said softly. She started shivering again, but it wasn't all from cold this time. Her mind kept going back to the lake, to seeing him in all of his naked glory. He was her partner for God’s sake. A hack from Nowheresville, the sometime competition. But he had looked so good in his tux at the Kerth awards and his dancing was… Don’t go there, Lane. And she hadn’t been joking when she said she’d hope that gravity had its way that first day. Mister Hardbody in a white towel hadn’t been at all hard to look at.
“Lois, are you okay?” Clark asked worriedly.
“I don’t think the sleeping bag will be enough,” she said. “It always takes me forever to get warm.”
“What do you suggest? Do you want me to make a fire?”
She shook her head and placed her hand on his chest. He was warm but he shivered at the touch of her cold hand. “They say shared body heat works really well. And I really don’t want Perry to find out…”
“That you were worried enough about me to jump into a freezing lake with your clothes on?”
She shivered again.
“Let’s get you into that sleeping bag,” Clark ordered. He guided her into the tent, helping her lay down on the flannel lining of the sleeping bag, while still wrapped in the blanket. The bag was surprisingly warm. Far warmer that it should have been. She sighed as she snuggled down, hardly noticing Clark pulling her shoes off and zipping up the bag.
-o-o-o-
Lois had jumped into the cold water to save him? Clark was surprised to say the least. Lois had been very clear she really didn’t want a relationship with him, although he also realized there were contradictions in her attitude. She had been jealous of Mayson Drake’s attention to him and the leather pants she had picked out for him to wear as ‘Spike’? Well, he’d seen how she’d looked at him while he was wearing them. Not quite the dewy-eyed looks she gave Superman, but a much more provocative evaluation. He was certain her evaluation had been a positive one.
‘You’re my own personal Superman,’ she had said. Did she suspect? He wasn't sure how he felt about that. He was certain she wouldn’t betray him for the story, but he was also certain she would be angry over the fact that he hadn’t told her. He’d been on the receiving end of Mad Dog Lane before and it wasn't anything he wanted to repeat, physical invulnerability or not.
He scanned her with his special vision. Her body temperature was nearly normal, heart and respiration a little higher than normal. He tried not to notice that her nipples were erect, hard pink-brown pebbles against pale skin. He tried not to notice the triangle of brown hair at the split of her legs, tried not to notice the curves of her hips, her thighs, her breasts.
“Clark, I’m still cold,” Lois complained.
Clark shook himself from his reverie. “Do you want me to get you something warm to drink?” he asked. “Coffee, or cider?”
She shook her head. “I jumped in to save you, and I nearly drowned.”
“I know.”
“You know what was going through my mind?”
He shook his head.
“That I hadn’t… I was going to die before I won a Pulitzer and… that I wasn’t a very good friend to you and I didn’t jump your bones the first chance I got.”
“I though you were in love with Superman.”
“Well… Superman is like a rock star. He’s safe because even if something does happen, you never have to worry about what he’ll think about you in the morning. Or balancing the checkbook or whether or not he likes Chinese leftovers. He’s safe because I know nothing will ever happen. He won’t let it happen. But you… you’re not safe.”
“Neither are you,” Clark told her. “You even scare Superman.”
“I do?”
“You do.”
She smiled. “But I’m still cold.”
“Lois…”
“Clark, I know I have a habit of jumping in without checking the water level. But normally, at least I have a sense of what’s happening. But I could have died out there.”
“I was there. It was okay,” Clark told her. “Of course, you wouldn’t have jumped in if you hadn’t thought I was in trouble.”
“True… but if you’re trying to distract me… I’m still cold. And you may not always be there to save me. I don’t want…” Her voice trailed off. “Life is too fragile, too short, not to grab onto what you have and make the most of it. I realized when I couldn’t find the surface that my biggest regret was not admitting how much I’m attracted to you. How much I want to feel your skin against mine. How much I want you to make love to me.”
He studied her face. He had to admit, being close to her, knowing she was naked under the blanket, was turning him on. And she knew it.
“Are you sure? I mean…”
She reached up and grabbed his shirt, pulling him to her. Her kiss was electric, sending shivers down his spine. She scooted the sleeping bag zipper down with one hand then pulled him even closer, so he was nearly laying on her. Her sudden aggressiveness startled him.
“Lois?”
“Make love to me Clark,” she ordered.
He pushed the zipper down all the way and opened it, spreading the sleeping bag across the floor of the tent. Lois was still covered by the blanket but he could tell without using his powers how erect her nipples were. He watched her watching him as he knelt in the tent and pulled off his shirt. Her pupils were dilated and her heart rate jumped.
He pulled off his shoes and her pink tongue flicked out against her lips. He unbuckled the belt on his jeans and undid the button. Suddenly she was on her knees, blanket across her shoulders, helping with the zipper. She hooked her thumbs into the waistband and pulled them down over his hips. She seemed pleased to see his erection pop out of his pants and gave him a seductive smile as he kicked the jeans way from his ankles.
“Lois, are you sure?”
In response she smiled even wider and placed one hand on his cock. “Has anyone told you how utterly gorgeous you are?” she asked.
He shook his head. “No one’s ever… No one’s ever been this close,” he admitted.
“No one? Not even Rachel behind the Tastee Freeze?”
He shook his head again. He shivered as she ran her hands over the crests of his pelvis and down his buttocks. The blanket dropped away, exposing her nakedness. The cold was making goose bumps on her skin, but he could also feel the heat coming off of her. He could smell the musk of her arousal. And it was making him even hotter than he was before.
Gently, he pushed her down onto the sleeping bag and pulled the blanket over them both. He cupped one of her breasts in one hand, kneading it gently. In response, she parted her legs, hooking one knee over his hip. She kissed him, teasing him with her tongue.
She pouted when he pulled back to nuzzle her neck. “Uh, Lois, what if Perry or somebody comes looking for us?”
“Perry brought Alice with him. Anybody else has to find their own date. You’re mine and I’m not sharing.”
-o-o-o-
She had watched as Clark stripped down for her. Naked he was magnificent. Michelangelo would hardly have been able to do him justice. Broad chest, six-pack abs, firm butt. His uncut penis stood at attention for her. She touched it, reveling in the sight of his engorged flesh.
She laid back and pulled him down to her, kissing him, teasing him, losing herself in the physical sensations. She knew it was dangerous. He was her best friend and her writing partner. But coming so close to death just now had made her appreciate how fragile everything was. Given their personalities and drive, they could both be dead tomorrow.
She shifted to put herself beneath him. ‘No one’s ever been this close,’ he had said. Which meant that Cat had lied about their time together. Which meant that she was his first.
He stopped and studied her face for a moment before sliding into her. She may have been his first, but that didn’t mean he didn’t know where the parts went or how the dance was done. She hooked both ankles around his back and thrust her hips against him in the oldest of all dances.
Paul had been an inexperienced boy. Claude had been a self-centered egotist. Clark? Clark’s attention was on her alone. Even Luthor hadn’t been so attentive to her needs and desires. Nothing else seemed to matter as they rode to their toe-curling climax together.
Finally sated, she scooted over to the edge of the sleeping bag to allow him to lie next to her. One thing was certain, after a workout like that she wasn't cold any more.
She studied her partner’s face as he looked back at her, face flush with their just finished exertions. He really did look like Superman…
“Clark?”
“Hmm?”
“Why were you skinny dipping? That lake had to be near freezing.”
“Um, I forgot my swimsuit?”
“Don’t you know that one of the rules of camping is to always bring a swimsuit?”
“The weather report was for rain.”
“Don’t change the subject. Everybody knows that’s one of the rules.”
“What, to not change the subject?
“No, to never forget your swimsuit.”
“Everybody knows this?” he asked.
“Of course, it’s right up there with packing toothpaste, garbage bags, and TP.”
“You mean, you packed TP?”
“I know how to pack for camping,” Lois told him.
“And I don’t?”
“I didn’t forget my swimsuit.”
“At least I didn’t jump into the lake with all my clothes on,” he retorted.
There was a low chuckle from outside the tent. “Give up, son,” Perry’s voice announced. “You can’t win. I just wanted to tell you two that dinner’s in half an hour. Oh and Clark, next time, don’t forget your swimsuit.”
