Chapter 1: Washington, DC - Wednesday 5:17 AM Walter Skinner lay in his bed staring at the ceiling above. He had just had a late night, having just flown in after saving Mulder’s ass on an X-Files case he was involved in. He was not looking forward to hearing Mulder’s debriefing later today, knowing all too well that he would not be able to submit Mulder’s report as is. Lying in bed the silence of his apartment surrounded him, the only noise coming from his wristwatch sitting on the end table next to his bed. Skinner let out a deep sigh and rolled off the bed to head for the shower. Skinner never was one to notice how lonely he had become. Ever since his divorce 3 years ago he just went about his daily life as he always did, which was telling of what he was like during his marriage. He worked long hours, caught a workout when he had extra time and came home to sleep. Rarely did he go out and socialize these days. When he was drinking more after his divorce he frequented a local bar where he would, from time to time, meet a young lady who was open to one night of fun. But it never went past that and when he stopped drinking, what little company he did get, stopped. When he went into his storage this past weekend he came across his 1990 Harley Road King that he bought himself on a whim several years back. At that time, he had gotten a sudden itch to get out and see the world more. He imagined long solo journeys along the Appalachian Trail away from the stresses of Washington, DC. The bike made him feel good for a while, he road it around the city and even took a short trip to the Atlantic coast but then it was put into storage and he never found the time to take it out and dust it off. Coming across the bike again stirred something in him. Driving into downtown that morning, Skinner was not in the best of moods. He had better not see Mulder until after noon today or he might not be so kind towards the young agent. He pulled into his parking spot and sat a moment staring at the steering wheel. Interrupting his thoughts, he heard a low hum echoing throughout the parking garage that caught his attention as it starting getting closer. Someone riding a vintage Triumph motorcycle pulled in a few spots across and over from where he was parked. He had noticed the bike parked on this level in the past but never thought twice about it. He reached up and adjusted his rearview mirror to get a better look at the bike without straining his neck. While admiring the bike in his rearview he couldn’t help but notice a woman removing her helmet and jacket. She was digging into her side bags and pulled out a few items of clothing, apparently her work attire. He watched as she stuffed her motorcycle gear into the side bags and hastily slip into her suit jacket as she exited the parking garage. He recognized her as one of the Special Agents in Charge from the Computer Crimes Task Forces located down the hall from his office. She had caught his eye from time to time but he never had the nerve to approach her. He exited his car finally and eyed the bike as he headed for the exit. Maybe it was time for him to consider taking the ole bike out of storage. As Skinner exited the elevator to his floor he noticed the woman, he had seen in the parking garage, exit the ladies restrooms, obviously having finished dressing for the office. While he was watching her, he caught her eye, which rewarded him with a small smile from the young lady before she hurried down the hall to Computer Crimes. Once settled in his office, Skinner had a hard time focusing on the paper work in front of him not able to get the smile out of his head. He didn’t know her name but knew that she had assisted a couple of his agents on cases. She was an attractive woman, he guessed in her mid 30’s, with long black hair that she always wore pulled back in a braid and what he thought might be hazel eyes or maybe green. He pulled up the agent listing on his computer and looked up the list of agents currently under the Computer Crimes Task Forces division. There were only two names of women and when he opened their profiles neither were that of his mystery lady. He looked over the organization chart for that division and noticed another woman’s name under Special Agent in Charge, Tessa Davis. He opened the profile and there was the picture of her smiling face staring back at him. Age 35, born in Morehead City, NC, graduated Princeton University Computer Sciences, recruited by the FBI in 1981 to assist in developing the new technologies division in Baltimore, MD, transferred to Washington, DC in 1996 when she was offered her current position as Special Agent in Charge in Computer Crimes. Skinner sat back in his chair looking at the profile before him, what was he thinking? What made him think he would even have a chance with this woman? He sucked in a deep breath and closed the profile. Back to work Skinner ole boy. Tessa sat at her desk typing away while she stuffed the last half of her donut in her mouth and washed it down with the last of her coffee. Crap, she thought, she was out of coffee. She leaned back in her chair to see if Will was sitting at his desk. “Shit, where is he? Will, you over there?” “Yeeees, what is it Tessa?” “Could you get me some more coffee? I mean if you’re getting up that is.” Will rolled his chair back and stood up with a big sigh, he walked over and grabbed Tessa’s coffee cup from her. “I’m not your personal assistant Tessa.” “Thank you Will.” She watched him walk away and went back to her typing. Will was a few years older than Tessa and had transferred into Computer Crimes under her a few years back. He reminded her of her older brother and the two became fast friends once they learned they were from the same hometown. Tessa admired Will for the way he was able to balance his family life with the FBI. He had a wife and 4 kids and lived in Arlington, VA. Tessa was single and considering the last couple of dates she had had, was destined to stay single. Will returned with her coffee and set it down. “You are the best Will.” Tessa said as she sipped her fresh coffee. She heard him clear his throat behind her. She turned in her chair to face him raising her eyebrows at him. “Melinda and the kids want to know when you’re coming back out for dinner. How about next week?” Tessa couldn’t help but smile at this. She had been attending their family Sunday dinners and holidays in the past year when Will’s wife found out she didn’t have any family around. The kids adopted her as Auntie Tessa. “Sounds good Will, tell Mel and the kids I will be there next Sunday.” Tessa sat drinking her coffee and thinking about her upcoming vacation in a few weeks. She took a two-week bike trip every summer, this year she was going to explore the Carolina and Florida coasts. Take her time, going south, relaxing on the beach, soaking up the sun. She wished that she had someone to go with this year. The tradition had started when she was 12. She and her dad, on his Goldwing, and her older brother Jeb, on his Triumph, would spend several weeks every summer touring the country. When Tessa went to college Jeb gave her his Triumph and bought a Harley before moving out west. Tessa and her Dad took a few trips when she was in college until he started getting sick prior to her finding out he had throat cancer. She lost him a year after she joined the FBI. Ever since then she was on her own other than the few times she and Jeb met up somewhere. It was always a time of reflection for her to remember her father. She hoped one day she would meet someone to take these trips with her but she was coming to realize that she probably wouldn’t find him in DC. She placed her chin on her hand and stared at the computer screen before her. For some reason her mind flashed to the Assistant Director she caught watching her in the hall this morning. She had noticed him eyeing her in the past and she always had a sort of curiosity about the man. The Assistant Director wasn’t known for being the most even-tempered of people. Tessa had heard stories about the man prior to coming to the DC bureau. Often times in passing she had overheard his yelling through his office doors. She knew she’d hate to be the one on the other side of those doors but knew she couldn’t judge the man unless she walked in his shoes for a day. She couldn’t help the fact either, that she had a thing for surly tall bald men. Tessa always had a special way with grouchy types, growing up surrounded by bikers it was practically all she knew. She wouldn’t mind trying to get past Skinners hard outer shell to see what was underneath or under his suit for that matter. She could tell the man was in decent shape. A smile crossed her face at the thought. Wednesday 6:15 PM Skinner closed the last case file he had to sign off on for the day and stood to file it away. It was only Wednesday and he was exhausted from the week. Looking at his watch he decided to take an early day and hit the gym before heading home for the night. Grabbing his things he exited the office just in time to see Tessa Davis pass his office. He followed her out staying back a ways so he could watch her. She had removed her suit jacket and couldn’t help but admire her from behind. It was almost hypnotizing the way her long braid swung back and forth as she walked, but it wasn’t the braid that had caught his eye. When they entered the garage he watched as she pulled her bike gear out of the side bags and stuffed in her suit jacket. She looked up in his direction as he was passing, realizing that she wasn’t alone and gave him a smile. Without a second thought Skinner stopped in his tracks. “Looks like an old bike.” “1969 Triumph. My brother restored it for me. It’s not in to bad of shape.” “It looks great to me. I love the classics.” “You ride?” “Um, not so much anymore. But I have a Road King in storage.” “Ah, a Harley man. Well the weather is right. You should get her out. Shame to keep her all locked up.” Skinner looked at Tessa for a moment and sighed quietly. She smiled at him again and swiftly slung her leg over as she mounted the bike. She looked up at him holding her helmet under her arm. “Well, if you do ever decide to get that Road King out, we should go for a ride.” With that she slid on helmet and started up the bike. Skinner walked to his car and watched as Tessa road off. That may have been just the motivation he needed. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
