MARRY THE NIGHT
“Order up!” I heard Lafayette call. I eagerly bounced over to him and picked up the order. He tilted his head. “Girlfriend, you are looking positively stunning,” he said grinning at me. I grinned back at him and pretended to pose. “Really? I hadn’t noticed,” I said mockingly flipping my blond hair over my shoulder. He laughed and leaned in closer. “Are you hoping a certain handsome bar owner will notice?” he asked shrewdly but was smirking. I just rolled my eyes grinning and picked up the food. I placed it on my tray and spun around heading to table 4. I placed the food down on the table. It was four guys laughing. I could tell they were drunk. One of them grinned up at me. “Hey babe why don’t I show you a good time huh?” he asked. “I’ll let you suck my dick” He reached out and grabbed my butt. “Hey!” I cried angrily swatting at his hand. “Don’t ever touch me again” I could feel Sam’s eyes on me watching intently. The guys expression darkened and he lashed out and grabbed me by the throat. He spun me around so that my back pressed against the edge of the table. “I will touch you anyway I want, you bitch,” He snarled at me. The next thing I knew, the guy was doubled over and my throat was released. I looked up. Sam was standing there looking livid. “Don’t ever touch her again asshole,” Sam snarled angrily. “Get out of my bar.” The guys quickly scrambled out of the booth and out the door. I shakily stood there. Sookie came running over. “Oh my Lord! Are you ok?” she asked hugging me. I hugged her back. “Yeah I’m fine,” I said softly. “Sam here saved you,” she winked. She looked at Sam, then at me her expression soft and amused. I knew she must’ve heard his thoughts. “Are you ok Liz?” Sam asked me, his blue eyes studying me carefully. I nodded. Sookie wiggled her eye brows at me before heading off to pick up another order. I smiled at Sam. “Thank you,” I said softly, as I put a hand on his arm. I could feel his eyes watching me as I went around to table 6 and dropped off their check. My name is Elizabeth Weston. I’m 27 years old with shoulder length dark blond hair and hazel eyes. I work at Merlotte’s bar in Bon Temps, Louisiana. Sookie Stackhouse was my best friend. She was telepathic and could read people’s minds, just not vampires’. What I hadn’t told anyone, was that I was psychic. I got visions of things to come. Sometimes they didn’t play out the way they were seen, but they were accurate. I was wearing the uniform. Black shorts with a white tee shirt with the green MERLOTTE’s emblem on it. My blond hair was pulled into a ponytail. A few shorter strands had hung down and tickled my cheeks. I had applied light blue eye shadow on, soft pink blush and clear lip gloss. I didn’t mind vampires. Some of them were pretty decent. Sookie’s boyfriend, Bill Compton, was a vampire. He was a really decent guy. He seemed to genuinely care for Sookie. I stood by table 10 and took their order. Sam had gone behind the bar again and was wiping the counter top with a soft white rag. As I headed back toward the kitchen and just hit the bar, a flash of light went off before my eyes. I stopped and gripped the edge of the bar top. The scene around me shifted and I was standing in the middle of a forest. I could hear and smell everything. I slowly turned my head left. I saw a body lying on the ground. The scene zoomed in. It was my mother. She was dead. Her throat had been ripped out. Her eyes stared up lifelessly at the sky. Her mouth was frozen open in an O of surprise or horror. In the blink of an eye, the scene vanished and I was standing back at Merlotte’s. The beer bottle I was holding slid from my hand and shattered on the floor at my feet. At that moment, the phone rang. Sam picked it up. “Merlotte’s bar and grill. Sam speaking,” he said into the receiver. There was a pause and then Sam spoke again. “Um. Sure Sheriff she’s right here hang on.” Sam came over to me holding the phone receiver out to me. “It’s Sheriff Dearborne.” I took the phone from him and put the receiver to my ear. Sheriff Dearborne’s voice came on the line. Sam remained, crossing his arms over the top of the bar counter top, watching me. “Miss Weston? I’m sorry to call you like this. I have some bad news. We found your mother in the forest. Her throat was ripped out,” He said quietly. It took me a moment to speak. “Thank you Sheriff. I-I’ll be down there to pick up her things.” Sheriff Dearborne said alright and hung up. I handed the phone back to Sam. “What’s going on?” Sam asked me hanging up the phone. My legs suddenly went out from underneath me and I slumped against the bar. “Liz?” I heard Sookie’s voice call alarmed. “Is she alright?” I heard Arlene’s voice call next. Sam hopped over the bar and helped me to my feet. Sookie and Arlene came hurrying over. Sookie looked at me. I sensed her presence in my head. It felt like a brush of a feather over my brain. Sookie raised a hand to her mouth. “Oh no. It’s her mom. She’s dead. They found her in the forest. Her throat was torn out,” Sookie relayed to everyone. “Shit,” Sam muttered. There was a pained expression on his face. His arms were around me. “I’m taking her to my office. Sookie, I’m letting you off work an hour early. I want you to keep an eye on her.” Sam said to Sookie. She nodded. There were tears in her eyes. Sam helped me into his office. Once inside his office, Sam put me on one of the large plush chairs that rolled. He grabbed a bottle of water and handed it to me. He sat on another chair in front of me and leaned forward. His elbows rested on top of his thighs. His blond hair fell softly around his right eye. It reached the top of his ears but was shorter as it went down his neck. He had the beginning stages of a beard. His blue eyes locked on mine. He was wearing a pair of jeans and a plaid shirt. “Liz. If you need a place to crash, you can always crash at my place,” he offered softly. I felt tears forming in my eyes. I buried my face into my hands and sobbed. “I have no one now,” I sobbed. “Both my parents are gone” I heard Sam exhale. He scooted closer to me. I felt his arms slowly snaking around me, pulling me toward him. I allowed him to draw me nearer. I slumped against him, leaning into his embrace. His arms tightened around me, his chin resting on top of my head. I pressed my face into his chest. “You have Sookie and me,” He said quietly. “You’re not alone.” After a few moments, Sam pulled back from the embrace, but he cupped my face between his hands. He gently wiped a tear away with his thumb. We stared into one another’s eyes. My heart hammered in my chest. Sam was really handsome but he was a kind and gentle guy. I knew he was a shifter. He could take the form of any animal, but the main one he used was a red and white border collie. He had some crappy luck with women. The last girl he liked turned out to be a shifter, but she followed a maenad who was evil and caused chaos. Sam moved his face closer. He kissed me on the bridge of my nose. I closed my eyes and felt completely relaxed. I opened my eyes. His face was still inches from my own. His thumbs lightly stroked my cheeks. Sam leaned in again and I barely felt his lips brush against mine when the door burst open causing him to jump away. I looked up. It was Sookie. “Sorry Sam. Um, Lafayette needs you in the kitchen a moment,” She said looking guilty. Sam nodded. He turned to me and patted me on the knee before getting up and heading out. Sookie came over to me and plopped down in Sam’s place on the chair. She gently hugged me tightly. I hugged her back just as tightly. I loved her. She was so wonderful. “Are you ok?” she asked me tilting her head to the side. I nodded, but felt fresh tears forming and streaking down my cheeks. “I just can’t believe my whole family is gone,” I said quietly staring at the wall. “My dad died when I was young and now my mom.” Sookie wiped a few tears that had slid down. “Well, you have me and Sam. So you’re not alone.” I smiled at her. Could Sam actually like me? Or was he just being supportive and sympathetic? I wondered. Sookie broke into a smirk. I knew she had read my mind again. I didn’t mind her reading my thoughts. “Oh Sam likes you alright,” She said. “A lot. He’s just terrified to say anything to you. He’s had some bad experiences with women.” I sniffled and quickly dried my eyes. “I know how he feels. I’ve had bad experiences with men. My last boyfriend abused me.” Pain flickered across her face. “Sam is not like that. He would rather set fire to a haystack then harm you.” Sookie gently took my hand and squeezed it. “Come on. Let’s head home. You can just rest.” I nodded. “I have to stop by the morgue and pick up some of Mom’s belongings first,” Sookie slinked an arm through mine as we left Sam’s office. Sam looked up immediately. He was cleaning the inside of a glass with the rag. “Ok Sam. Liz and I are gonna take off. We gotta swing by the morgue to pick up her mom’s things,” Sookie said softly. Sam nodded and then moved his eyes onto me. I smiled and allowed Sookie to pull me from the bar. Later that evening, Sookie and I were in her house. It was so cozy and welcoming. I was curled up on the couch dressed in a pair of boxer shorts and a white tank top with spaghetti shoulder straps. I had taken a shower earlier and my hair was fluffed around my shoulders in damp strands. My skin glistened with moisture from the shower and the heat. I was drinking a cold glass of iced tea. Sookie had retired and told me that if I needed anything to wake her up. Suddenly, I heard scratching at the door and a dog whine. I slowly got up and cautiously opened the front door. A border collie rushed in. Grinning, I closed the door and flopped back down on the couch. The dog came over and placed his head on my lap. His large brown eyes looked up at me. I smiled and rubbed his neck. I scratched his ear. I leaned down and pressed my face into the top of his head. I kissed his nose. “Oh boy,” I said softly stroking his soft fur. “I’m glad I have Sookie and Sam in my life. Without them I’d be lost.” The dog panted, almost as though he was grinning. He nuzzled my face and gave my cheeks a few licks. I chuckled. “Come on Sam,” I said grinning at the dog. “Come sleep with me.” I got up and patted my thigh. The Border collie hesitated. I stopped and looked at him. “I don’t bite,” I said chuckling. I patted my thigh again. This time the dog followed me upstairs and into my bedroom. I switched on the light on my nightstand. I pulled down the covers and slid underneath them. Sam jumped up on the edge of the bed and curled up at my feet. Smiling, I curled up next to him. I pressed my face into his soft fur and closed my eyes. SAM MERLOTTE I opened my eyes and was staring at Liz’s back. Her hair was fluffed around her shoulders. Her sides rose and fell softly as she was still fast asleep. I was naked as my shift had worn off. I gently reached out and touched her bare arm ever so softly. She stirred and turned over. She opened her eyes. The sunlight that poured through the window caught them, making them appear to be amber. She broke into a smile when she saw me, then realization dawned on her. “Oh God Sam you’re naked!” She cried quickly scurrying out of bed. She looked away embarrassed. I got up. “Yeah the shift wears off if I sleep,” I said. Liz avoided looking at me as she rummaged around her dresser. She found a white tee shirt and a pair of plaid boxer shorts. She handed them to me with her head turned. “These were my dad’s. They should fit you,” she said. I took them and quickly pulled them on. Finally she looked at me. Her cheeks were rosy, but it had nothing to do with the makeup she’d worn the day before. She looked just as beautiful without the makeup. I approached her. She watched me. I gently tilted her face up toward mine. “Are you alright?” I asked her quietly. She closed her eyes and then re-opened them. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears. “My mom was murdered. They think some kind of wild animal did it. But I don’t know of any wild animals that would rip a human’s throat out like that. And why mom?” Elizabeth asked. “I’m not exactly ok Sam.” I flinched. “I know I didn’t mean anything by it,” I said. Liz’s expression softened. “I’m sorry I snapped at you,” She apologized quietly. I shrugged. “It’s fine. “How about after work I take you out for coffee? I know a great place,” I offered. Liz smiled and nodded. “Sure that sounds lovely,” she said. I grinned. LIZ I stood in front of Sam. He had asked me out for coffee after work. Sam gently tapped my nose. I inhaled and decided to tell him the truth about me. “Sam? I need to tell you something. It’s serious,” I said biting my bottom lip. Sam watched me intently and nodded, signaling that he was listening. “You know how Sookie is telepathic? Well I’m psychic,” I held my breath. Sam stepped forward and hugged me. I was surprised and taken aback. “Is that how you knew about Arlene’s fall last week?” he asked releasing me. I nodded. “I also saw my mom’s death before the sheriff called,” I said even quieter. Sam’s expression faltered. He gently touched my cheek. “Does anyone else know?” he asked. “Just Sookie,” I replied. “No one else though.” “I won’t tell anyone if you don’t want me to. It’ll be between Sookie and me. Ok?” he asked. I nodded gratefully and broke into a grin. The door opened and Sookie came in. Her blond hair was curly and hung over one shoulder. She jumped when she saw Sam. “What are you doing here Sam?” she asked. “He spent the night,” I said to Sookie. Sookie’s lip twitched. “Aw. Did you two have sex?” she asked. “Dammit Sookie,” Sam said exhaling loudly. I blushed furiously and shook my head. “No we didn’t,” I replied avoiding eye contact with Sam. “Pity. Sam’s thinking what it would be like,” Sookie smirked and ducked as Sam launched a pillow in her direction. She laughed and headed down the hallway. I sneaked a glance at Sam. He looked embarrassed and all shades of crimson. I gently touched Sam’s arm. “Come on. Breakfast time,” We headed down stairs. I had no idea that things would get much worse.
