The dark, winding road unfurled before the truck, more of it being revealed by the headlights with every second as Matt steered his old truck away from Mystic Falls. Elena sat beside him, quiet and withdrawn. The question that hung between them meant everything to her. Matt glanced at Elena, his heart pinching a little with the sorrow he felt for her. “Elena,” he murmured softly. She stared ahead, and somehow she looked both confused and trapped. “Stop the car,” she said suddenly. “What?” His head snapped around to look at her, shocked by her sudden demand. “Pull over!” she ordered. “I can’t do this, Matt. I just can’t choose one of them.” Matt swerved the truck abruptly, the rough bumping as the car slowed jolting them both until it came to a stop. As he turned off the engine, Matt shook his head at Elena. "So what now?" he asked. "You're just not going to choose?" He sat back in his seat, huffing an annoyed sigh. "They both might be gone in an hour, Elena. You don't have time to keep playing this game." A single tear slipped from Elena’s eye, and she brushed it away quickly with the back of her hand, hoping Matt couldn’t see it in the darkness. “How am I supposed to choose, Matt? If I choose one of them, I’ll have to let one of them go, and I can’t do that!” “You can’t have both of them, either! You’re toying with them!” Matt shouted. “But none of this even matters because they’ll both be dead soon,” Elena whimpered quietly. “They’re going to die, Matt!” “Hey,” Matt said softly, resting a comforting hand on her shoulder. Angry as he was with her, he didn’t want to upset Elena. She had enough on her plate at the moment without having to deal with his judgment. “Klaus still could have been lying. There’s still a chance they’ll all be okay, right?” From the way he said it, Elena knew he wasn’t talking about Stefan and Damon, but it helped a little anyway. “I can’t choose, Matt,” Elena whispered. “I can’t.” “You don’t have to,” Matt sighed, returning his attention to his truck and leaving the highway. “Why don’t we just stay here tonight? We’ll wait it out and go back to Mystic Falls in the morning.” Elena nodded, pulling her arms close to herself. “Am I a horrible person for doing this, Matt?” she asked quietly. “No,” Matt replied. “You’re an honest person.” “You really mean that?” She asked. “Yeah,” Matt said, pulling up to a motel. “Yeah, I do.” They got out of the truck and walked in silence to the motel. After arguing for a while with a foreign receptionist who couldn’t get it through her head that they wanted a room with two beds instead of one, they entered the small, musty room they were to spend the night in. Matt closed the door, shutting out the rest of the world. Elena sat on a faded green armchair positioned in the corner of the room, pulling her legs up next to her. “Did I do the right thing, Matt?” she said absently. “You did the only thing you could,” he said, sitting on one of the beds and resting his hands on his knees. “You know, maybe it’s better this way.” “How do you mean?” Elena asked. “If you don’t choose one of them, you won’t have to spend any time wondering what would have happened if you made the other choice,” Matt explained. “That’s what you think this is about?” Elena asked, appalled, as she put her feet back on the floor, “Me being afraid that I’ll make the wrong choice?” “Elena,” Matt pleaded, standing up. “I didn’t mean—” “I need to get some air,” Elena said angrily, standing and striding to the door. “Elena, wait!” Matt cried, but Elena was already gone. The cool night air met her as she closed the door behind her with a little more force than was necessary, and she felt the overwhelming need to walk. The last time she’d stayed in a motel was the night of her passionate make out session with Damon. The memory sent shock waves through her body, the places his hands and lips had desperately explored reliving the sensations. She brought a finger up to brush against her lower lip, remembering the way his touch had affected her, more passionate and seductive than anything she’d ever experienced. She allowed her mind to wander for a moment to what might have happened, had Jeremy not interrupted them. She might never find out. They might never get the chance to pick up where they left off. Not so far into the future, Damon would either be upset with her for leaving him to die alone or…no. He wasn’t going to die. She would see him in the morning, and they would laugh about worrying so much over nothing. He would make a witty remark and she would scold him for being so lighthearted following his near death experience. Stefan would hold her in his arms and tell her over and over that everything was okay. But what if she was wrong? What if in the morning she no longer had a choice to make? What if she would never see the Salvatore brothers again? Elena ducked into the loud bar she was passing by, hoping it would take her mind off of the suspense of awaiting the fate of the brothers she had come to…love. She lied to them and she lied to herself, always saying that she “cared about” Damon but really only loved Stefan. But if that were true, she would have been able to choose. She would have known, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that it was the right choice. She loved both of them. Did that mean that she had to let both of them go?
