The Scent of Apples
The smiling girl with the sunshine hair inhaled the sweet scent of the apple grass as she lay on a velvet lined trench coat. Beside her a tall man with tousled chestnut hair and a blue pinstripe suit leant back on his elbows and regarded New New York. After running for so long it was almost tranquil to be resting on the hill overlooking a futuristic city with dazzling lights and unending spacecraft whirring past beyond the still expanse of water. Around them on a well-worn blanket that had seen many better days, lay the remnants of a picnic. A few wedges of exotic cheeses, freshly cut fruit and a pork pie that Rose had insisted completed a picnic.“So, a long way from home and a picnic was still the best entertainment we could collectively devise?” Rose grinned up at the Doctor as she lifted her head to rest on his thigh. They often shared platonically intimate moments, albeit usually after the defeat of some Big Bad trying to take over the universe. He grinned at her, more than willing to engage in their usual banter.
“Well it’s not all bad, is it? Nice food, great view, I guess the pork pie was okay for Earth food.” He laughed at the mock offence she played across her face.
“I suppose you’ll be telling me that some Pork Pork Pie from New New York is better then?” The feisty Brit raised her eyebrows at him to accompany her usual sass but the Doctor just laughed harder before continuing his evaluation.
“And I suppose the company is adequate.” The man with the bright eyes shot her a cheeky grin which changed to a pained grimace as she punched him in the leg.
“Adequate? Not meeting up to bloody Time Lord Standards then?” She groped at her side and fumbled until her fingers found purchase on a wedge of cheese. Taking it quickly she threw it behind her where it struck the offending Time Lord in the face and tumbled down his suit.
He looked at the impetuous blonde incredulously and leant over until he caught her eye.
“Did you just throw a piece of Camembert at me, Miss Rose?” The Doctor attempted to give her a haughty look while the blonde in question grinned sweetly back at him.
“Me? Throw food in such civilised Time Lord company? I’d never dare do such a thing!” she paused before adding, “Well maybe, but you did deserve it!”
“Well in all my nine centuries I’ve never had to deal with such impertinence! I have every intention of taking you over my knee!” He held one hand firm and rigid, pointing to it with the other hand and the most serious look he could muster. Instead of eliciting giggles from his companion he was met with a much more grown up response.
“Why don’t you then?” Rose licked her teeth and grinned broadly at him.
The Doctor looked at her with his old eyes, saw the sunlight playing over her hair, the breeze dancing strands away from her face and felt his breath hitch in his chest. Ever since they had first began than mutual journey in his previous regeneration, their relationship always toed the line between platonic and something else. Even after he regenerated he retained his strong feelings for her, a most unusual event. Hers was one of the first faces as she nursed him to health. Their hugs of victory over evil all too often lingered past the appropriate and were usually accompanied by unnecessary touches here and there. A hand on the elbow here, the tucking of her golden hair there. He couldn’t remember the last time he had felt like this about anyone, let alone this amazing, fantastic girl from Earth. It had been so long that the Doctor felt out of touch with love, kept it encased deep within, away from pain and hurt and hardship. Protected his heart from what he invariably had to do, the companions he had lost in the past. Perhaps most hurtful of all; rejection. What if she didn’t feel the same way?
Perhaps she was worth it?
Worth the risk?
The Time Lord’s eyes caught Rose’s and glinted mischievously.
“Why don’t I indeed? I think it’s well overdue. Best get this over with.” He patted his knee but instead of the comforting warmth of Rose the Doctor felt her get to her feet. As he looked up at her the sun rushed around her, blocking all but her silhouette. That curvy figure in her blue jumper and wild hair, her hand above her head raised to throw another piece of their forgotten picnic.
“Don’t you dare!” Before the words had even left his lips he was struck with a rogue grape that bounced down his chest to the warm spot where her head had been and disappeared into the tall grass.
“Oh you are so asking for it now!” Scrambling to his feet he looked around for an edible missile to retaliate with.
“Oh yes!” Laughing, she imitated his frequent saying he seemed to have adopted in this latest generation. The lanky man in his suit went to lunge at her but after all the practice constantly running she was too quick and sprang away pelting him with a fistful of grapes.
“You know, you’re only making it worse for yourself Miss Rose!” The Doctor attempted to adopt an authoritative voice but his threat was met only with soft giggles coming from behind the TARDIS.
“Oh no your Time Lordship! You are far too old to able to keep up with me!” Rose gasped between raucous giggles, leaning against the familiar blue box for support.
It was good to see him laugh, his eyes twinkled when he was happy and it was all too often they were pools of sadness. Rose couldn’t help but feel insignificant in comparison to the amazing life he had experienced, despite his “humans are anything but small” speech. As they continued their exploration of time and space his attention to never went unnoticed. Even if it was as simple as how he watched her reaction when he flung open the TARDIS doors to a new world teeming with life and excitement.Rose wanted every embrace, every time he took her by the hand as they strolled down the main street of a novel planet to last forever. She could happily spend eternity gallivanting around the Universe with him, her Doctor.
“Old?! Indeed, now you’ve down it! You should be treating your elders with respect!” He growled from behind her as his strong arms encircled her waist and pulled them both to the ground laughing hysterically. A stubbly cheek pressed against her smooth face as the Doctor tickled her into submission over his knee, both of them panting with the exertion.
“Hey Doctor….” Rose wrapped her hands around the masculine ones clutching her waist, stilling them. The man in question felt a warmth spread across his cheeks as her hands touched his so softly.
“Mmmm?” One hand took hers, the thumb rubbing across her skin, raising goose bumps that radiated from the contact.
“I love being here, with you. Or anywhere really.” She looked slowly up over her shoulder and catching his eye she wriggled around to face him. Their embraces had never been this intimate, she was clutched to him in his lap as they lay entangled together in the long apple grass. The Time Lord leaned down, keeping his eyes locked into hers, he could see her chest rising and falling with short shallow breaths and could feel her pulse racing beneath his fingertips.
He leant down until their lips almost touched, she could feel his warm breath dancing across her lips, smelling impossibly of cinnamon.
“I love it too.” His voice murmured, dipping his head to brush his lips against hers.
Rose felt tingles spread from her lips to her fingertips and down to her toes. Her Doctor had her clutched in his arms, one hand entangled in her long hair pulling her deeper into the kiss and the other across her lower back where her jumper rode up and the pale strip of skin was exposed. The blonde was pressed against his chest, one hand flat on his chest to feel the twin hearts beating rapidly, the other cupping the back of his neck and carding through his hair. How many times had she ruffled his hair? But not like this. Never like this. If only this moment could last for all time.
Her Doctor sighed with contentment as their first, tender kiss drew to a reluctant close. Her warm body in his arms, the cool breeze that heralded twilight and the quiet hum of the TARDIS as she breathed her agreement. Slowly they opened their eyes, unwilling to relinquish the quiet in their minds that their kiss fashioned. He lifted her up to nestle her in his lap as they watched the last of the sun’s rays ripple across the water.
After a long while the Doctor broke the comfortable silence.
“I’ve wanted to do that for a long time.” The Time Lord wrapped his arms around her waist and rested his chin in the crook of her neck.
“Me too.” Rose sighed, leaning against his soft, dark hair. The man of so many lives could not recall a similar state of relaxation and contentment across the nine centuries he had traversed across the Universe.
He wanted to encapsulate this moment, laying there in the soft grass with his Rose, the soft scent of apples carried on the breeze would remind him of her long after she was taken from him. Later, when the unthinkable happened, he would hate apples. Just the smell reminded him of what he lost and what could have been. After her departure from him, he could not bring himself to visit New New York again.
The Doctor put a gentle hand beneath her chin to solicit another kiss when the roar of an engine in failure flew above them. They broke apart suddenly staring at the large silvery grey vehicle in surprise. A siren wailed from within the damaged craft as it left a streak of ominous black smoke across the dying rays of sunset. Looking down at Rose he found her already grinning at him, ready for whatever new adventure was to come.
“Shall we?” Rose gestured towards the crashing ship’s direction with her head as she held his hand in hers. The Doctor took that hand and brought it up to his mouth. Placing a chaste, lingering kiss on it he got to his feet, pulling her up with him and ran past his trench coat. Whipping it up, he pulled it on impatiently and took her hand, racing towards the crashing ship.
