There are tales that when you know you are about to die, your life flashes before your eyes. Sam had heard it from plenty of people and had even experienced it himself once. He never knew that it happened when you were watching the man you loved being killed by his brother. "GABRIEL!" He yelled, trying to shove Dean off of him so he could get to his lover. Dean didn't relent though, holding Sam tight to keep his brother from getting anywhere near Lucifer.
Tears filled Sam's eyes and he sobbed as he watched the light explode out of Gabriel's eyes and mouth and he knew, just knew that for once the Trickster hadn't managed to get out of his own death. "No...no no...GOD NO!" He kept struggling before he turned angry, tear glassed eyes to Lucifer. "I will find a way to kill you! Do you hear me, Lucifer! I WILL NEVER SAY YES TO YOU!" He shuddered, watching the fallen archangel look down at his brother sadly.
Lucifer looked up at Sam, the sadness still evident on his face before he disappeared. The second the archangel was gone Sam shoved his brother away, moving towards Gabriel and dropping on his knees next to the man. His hands hovered over his body, eyes wide as a choked sob escaped his throat before the emotions finally overcame him. He gathered Gabriel into his arms, screaming and sobbing harshly. His sobs wracked his body, shaking both of them violently.
He leaned back, looking down at Gabriel as tears slid down his face. His hand brushed through the archangel's hair and down his face. "Wake up. Gabriel, please. I can't do this without you." He whispered, even though he knew it was useless. Gabriel was gone. Sam looked at the outline of his wings on the floor as a hand fell on his shoulder. He jerked at looked up to see Dean. "Sam, we need to get out of here." He just shook his head. "I can't leave him Dean..." Dean was about to say something when the sound of wings rustled through the room and suddenly Castiel was standing before them.
Castiel took in the scene before him, face tensing before sadness took over. "Gabriel..." He spoke softly, kneeling next to his brother's body. He looked across at Sam as Sam looked at him, their eyes locking in silent communication. Castiel nodded, taking a breath. "I will take Gabriel's body to Bobby's. He will be safe there and then we can bury him." He knew Sam wouldn't, couldn't burn the body. Much as he hadn't been able to burn Dean's when the elder Winchester brother had been killed by hell hounds.
Sam slowly bent his head, pressing his lips over Gabriel's face before falling on his lips. "I love you." He whispered against them before the sobs over again. He laid Gabriel back down as Dean pulled him away and helped him up. Castiel bent down, lifting Gabriel in his arms and looking at the both of them before disappearing. As soon as he was gone Sam's body just slumped and he stood there for several minutes just staring at where the body had been.
Dean frowned, wrapping his arm around Sam, slowly leading him out of the hotel. He'd never seen his brother this torn up over anything. It actually broke his heart. "We'll get Lucifer for this, Sammy. Just remember that, ok?" Sam nodded before getting in the car. As Dean pulled back Sam turned, looking back at the hotel for just a second, shaking his head before turning back around.
They made it back to Bobby's after driving through the night and on into the day. As soon as the car was stopped Sam jumped out, running into the house. "Cas?" He stopped as soon as he saw Gabriel lying on the bed in Bobby's study. He walked over, sitting next to him as Dean came in. Bobby watched them both, frowning. They all knew about the relationship the two had. "He looks like he's sleeping..." He trailed off, touching Gabriel's hand before taking a deep breath. "We need to find a place to bury him." Bobby nodded before speaking. "Castiel found a place. Out back under that tree where you two used to go..." He stopped as Sam started crying again.
Sam remembered the spot well. Gabriel had actually set up a picnic out there shortly after they had started seeing one another.

Sam touched the blindfold that was over his eyes, frowning slightly. "Where are we going, Gabriel?" He sighed, almost tripping over a dip in the ground as he was led through the salvage yard. He was close to pulling the damned thing off, frustrated because he'd almost tripped a dozen times since they'd walked outside. He'd been seeing Gabriel for about a week, still unsure why he was so alright with dating the man who'd killed his brother a couple hundred times just to prove a point.
Gabriel laughed, pulling Sam along by the hand to the back. He’d found the perfect spot for a picnic, the weather was gorgeous, everything was perfect. He reached the tree, looking up at the flowers blooming on its branches before nudging Sam with his shoulder. “You can take that off now.” Sam sighed in relief before pulling the blindfold from his eyes, staring at the blanket. “Whats this?” He smirked when he saw all the sweets, shaking his head. “Please don’t tell me you expect me to eat all this.”
The archangel laughed, pushing Sam towards the blanket. “Its not all sweets you know. There are a few things in that basket that I think you’ll like.” He walked over to the blanket, plopping down and snapping his fingers, conjuring up a nice pile of soft pillows for them to use. “Come on Sammy. You might actually have some fun if you try.” He winked before grabbing a strawberry, dipping it into a bowl of whipped cream before taking a bite. Sam sighed, shaking his head before he sat down next to Gabriel, leaning against one of the pillows. “You really did all of this for me?” He looked surprised. No one had ever cared about him enough to do stuff like this for him.
“Of course I did this for you. I don’t see any other adorable giants hanging around, do you?” He watched Sam as the man reached for the basket, pulling it open. Inside was his favorite style of salad, dressing and all. “You know you didn’t have to do all this.” He mumbled softly, blushing as he unwrapped the salad, grabbing the fork that came with it. Gabriel watched Sam, smiling before reaching out and brushing his hair back. “You know you’re cute when you blush, right?” Sam pushed Gabriel, wrinkling up his nose. “No I’m not.”
They stayed outside for a few hours, lounging on the blanket. Eventually they both ended up asleep, rocking languidly in a hammock that Gabriel had snapped up for them in the shade of the tree.

Castiel appeared back in the study suddenly. Sam's head jerked up as he was brought back from the memory. He blinked back tears, breathing shakily. "Sam I can take him if you..." "NO! No, Cas...I need to be the one to do this. He was...no he IS my mate. I'm going to bury him." Sam looked down at Gabriel again, fingers cupping the still face of his angel before he stood and lifted the body in his arms. He looked at each one of them before he started out of the house.
They all followed him to the tree out back. The hammock that Gabriel had made for them was still there, moved to make room for the grave by Castiel. As they got closer, Sam's eyes fell upon the hole in the ground. His stomach dropped, dread setting in as he realized that this would be the last time he would ever see Gabriel again. The thought brought fresh tears to his eyes as he finally reached the hole, kneeling down next to it before carefully dropping his lover.
He reached up, carefully removing the necklace that always hung against his chest. He stared down at the amulet, Gabriel's amulet. His thumb brushed over the symbols before he brought it to his lips and kissed the metal. He still remembered the night that Gabriel had given him the necklace.

Sam hadn't meant to fall for Gabriel. He hadn't even seen it coming. They'd been seeing each other for almost three months now. They shared a bed, spent most of their time together, talked about everything. Sam smiled, shaking his head as he turned over in the bed in the latest shabby hotel of the week, smelling Gabriel on the pillows. They'd been having sex since practically the beginning of their relationship, but lately things had started changing.
He pushed himself up, looking around the room before heading into the bathroom. Dean had started getting his own room as soon as Gabriel and Sam became a thing, not wanting to deal with the two in the least. He couldn't say he wasn't thankful for that. He enjoyed the privacy of being with Gabriel. He wondered where Gabriel was as he washed his face and then left the bathroom, grabbing his phone. He pulled up his brother's name, calling him. "Hey, you seen Gabriel?" He said when he heard his brother answer, frowning when Dean said no. Dean started in about the case after that, explaining that he and Cas were gonna go check out some leads and they didn't need Sam.
Dean was being over protective of Sam since he knew they were hunting down some demons. He didn't want his little brother to start drinking demon's blood again. Sam understood, but it was frustrating to be treated like a child when he was fully capable of fighting his cravings.
They hung up after a few more minutes and Sam decided to shower and get dressed. He figured Gabriel was off doing something important...or pranking someone. God he just hoped the angel wasn't setting him or Dean up for anything. He smiled at the thought as he stepped into the shower. He took a quick shower and dried off, getting dressed before snagging the room key and his cash. He was starving and he figured the diner down the street was as good as any.
Gabriel had purposely waited for Sam to leave before popping back into the hotel room. He looked around, frowning as he took it all in. They'd been there for a few days and he was trying to decide what to do. He could tell that he was in love with the human and he decided that it was time he let Sam know. He pulled a box out of his pocket, looking at it before setting it on the table and rubbing his hands together. Time to go to work.
Sam patted his stomach as he reached the hotel room, slipping his key into the lock before opening the door. He stepped inside and shut the door before turning and freezing. This was NOT the hotel room he'd been in before. This room was, for lack of a better word, extravagant. It looked more like something that should be in a five star, top class hotel than the dive they were actually staying in. "Gabriel?" He asked softly, smiling when the angel in question walked out of the bathroom. "Well hello there, Sam-o"
"What is this?" He walked further into the room, eyes falling on the king size bed that looked like the most comfortable thing he'd ever seen. The whole room was gorgeous. "Oh I just thought you'd like a little variety." Gabriel smiled, stepping closer. "Plus I wanted to do something nice for you. I've...realized a few things lately. Things we need to talk about." Sam stared down at him, raising an eyebrow before he sat on the black cushy couch that sat in one corner. "What things?"
Gabriel sat down next to him, shifting slightly before slowly looking at Sam. Might as well dive right in, yeah? "I know we've been through a lot of crap. A lot of which I caused, but I genuinely...I really care about you Sammy." Sam smiled, tilting his head. "Gabe, I care about you too...whats this about?" Gabriel moved forward, kissing Sam tenderly and cupping his face. "I love you, Sammy. I really do." He looked into the man's eyes, wondering what would happen now.
To say Sam was shocked was an understatement. Gabriel loved him. HIM. He stared back, swallowing hard before speaking softly. "I..I love you too, Gabe." He pulled Gabriel closer, making the smaller man slide into his lap as his arms went around him. Their lips met in a kiss, slow and sweet, just tasting one another. Gabriel groaned softly, pressing in close, melding his body to the larger one beneath him before pulling back. "I got something for you." He smirked before getting up and walking back over to the table. He picked up the slender box, bringing it back and once again straddling Sam's lap.
Sam took the box when Gabriel extended it to him, raising an eyebrow before carefully opening it. His eyes widened when he saw the necklace, staring at the pendant. "What is this?" Gabriel pulled the necklace out, holding it up in the light. "This is my Seal. Its my name in Enochian. Most wear it for protection." He smiled before slipping the cord over Sam's head, watching the small metal disc as it lay on Sam's chest. "Now, whether I am here or not you'll always have a little piece of me."
Sam blushed slightly before pulling Gabriel into another kiss, gently biting at the archangel's lower lip, drawing a gasp. He slid his hands beneath the man's legs, holding him as he stood before walking to the bed and dropping Gabriel down. Immediately Gabriel slid back until he was propped against the pillows, watching as Sam crawled onto the bed, following him up. Their lips met in a passionate kiss that left them both breathless. Gabriel lifted his hand, preparing to make their clothes disappear, but Sam stopped him. "No. No magic. I want to do this the right way." He whispered before pushing himself up on his knees, pulling his shirt over his head and dropping it on the floor.
He leaned back down, kissing Gabriel again as his hands slipped between them, fingers working the buttons on the front of the man's shirt. Once he had them opened he ran his hands up Gabriel's chest before pushing his hands into the shirt, pushing it off Gabriel quickly. They kissed again, tongues meeting and fighting for dominance as Gabriel groaned, hands gripping the top of Sam's jeans and popping the button there.
His hand pushed inside, smiling as he met flesh instead of the irritating boxers the human normally wore. His fingers wrapped around Sam's cock, stroking awkwardly in the confines of his clothes. "You have got to get these off, Sammy." He groaned, pulling his hand free and pushing at the material. Sam laughed, moving to push the jeans off before he tugged Gabriel's down as well.
Suddenly Sam found himself on his back, Gabriel spread out on top of him as the angel plundered his mouth, licking into it, tasting him. He'd always loved the taste of Sam, had always teased the Winchester that he was the sweetest treat Gabriel would ever find. This time was no different. Reluctantly, though, Gabriel pulled away and started trailing his lips downward. Sam moaned, fingers tangling in his hair as the angel's lips left a burning path down his body. "Fuck, Gabe..." He mumbled, closing his eyes.
Gabriel smirked up at Sam, watching his face as his fingers wrapped around his cock and his tongue swiped over the head, collecting the precome that was already dripping from the tip. "Mmm, favorite flavor ever. They really should make an ice cream that tastes like you, but then again I'd probably be the only one who would eat it." He winked before sucking Sam's cock down, moaning around him.
He cried out as the wet heat of Gabriel's mouth engulfed him, hips thrusting up. He threw his head back as his fingers pulled the angel's hair slightly. The way Gabriel was going, Sam was ready to declare his mouth a sin.
"Damnit Gabriel!" He gasped, trying to pull the angel up and off his cock, but he couldn't. He felt Gabriel's hands moving over his thighs before one hand moved down, fingers teasing at Sam's hole slowly. Sam whimpered, pushing down just as the finger (which was mysteriously slick) slid inside him, hooking carefully. A strangled cry fell from his lips as his hips jerked. Gabriel would be the death of him, he swore.
Gabriel continued sucking on Sam even as he opened his lover up, adding a second and then a third finger when he knew the human below him could handle it. His fingers hooked as he pulled off the cock in his mouth with a wet pop, rubbing his prostate and smirking. Sam moaned, glaring down at him. "Please...fuck please, Gabe. Need you..." He stared into Sam's eyes, smiling when he realized that his pupils were completely blown out, covering almost the whole iris. "Gonna give you what you need, Sammy." He pulled, pulling his fingers free before he lubed his cock up. He knew Sam had said no magic, but he didn't think it would matter right at that moment.
He moved up, crawling in between Sam's legs before leaning in to kiss him tenderly. He grasped himself, lining up before he slowly pushed forward. Sam winced at the burn as he was stretched, clinging to Gabriel before biting his lip once the angel was fully seated.
They stilled, staying like that for just a few moments, wrapped around each other, before Gabriel moved. Sam gasped, hooking his legs around the angel, trying to pull him in deeper as Gabriel started thrusting, finding a rhythm they both enjoyed. He tilted Sam's head up, leaning in and sucking at a spot on his throat, eliciting a groan from the man. He bit, marking Sam and smiling with satisfaction at that.
They moved together, wrapped up in each other. They locked eyes as Gabriel changed his angle, bearing down against Sam's prostate again and again until the man beneath him was babbling incoherently from the pleasure. They were both close and Gabriel reached between them, grasping and stroking Sam's cock in time with his thrusts, determined to get Sam off first.
It didn't take much though and soon Sam came, Gabriel's name falling from his lips repeatedly like a prayer. His body spasmed and he clenched tightly around Gabriel, making the angel finish as he kissed Sam, pulling his name from the man's lips.
They collapsed, a pile of limbs tangled together. Sam smiled, slowly shifting the both of them so that Gabriel was next to him, head on Sam's chest. His fingers slid through Gabriel's hair slowly as he closed his eyes. That had been intense. Gabriel mumbled against his skin, smiling. "Love you, Sammy." He looked up slowly as his fingers started brushing against Sam's skin languidly. "I love you too, Gabe."

He couldn't throw the necklace in. It was a piece of Gabriel, his only true connection to the angel. He kissed it again before slipping it back over his head. Dean stepped up next to Sam, crouching beside him before handing a picture to Sam. "Send this with him." He mumbled before stepping back. When Sam looked at the picture he swore he felt his heart break again. The picture had been taken earlier in the month by Bobby. He smiled sadly. It was a picture of Dean, Castiel, Gabriel, and himself all looking sheepish after Gabriel had started a huge water balloon fight in the salvage yard that had ended with each of them slathered in mud, filthy and smiling into the camera.
He brushed his thumb over the picture before nodding and dropping it into the ground. It landed on Gabriel's chest face up. Sam very slowly pushed himself up before walking over and grabbing a shovel. He took those final moments before shoveling the dirt in to look at his lover, his mate, the man who had turned his life completely on end. "I love you, Gabe." He whispered before he started shoveling the dirt, covering the angel quickly.
By the time he was done the only one left outside with him was Castiel. He looked up, surprised to see the other angel still there with him. Castiel watched him before walking over. "I am sorry for your loss, Sam. Gabriel died trying to save you. He would have done anything to keep you from having to fight Lucifer." Sam nodded, patting Castiel's shoulder before he turned and went back into the house. He went to his room, collapsing on the bed and falling into a troubled sleep.
