Summary: Carl is fed up with the prison and runs away. He finds a church to stay at with a group of church goers that are all humans. Daryl, Rick, and Glenn go find Carl. When they arrive at a church, Daryl meets someone he thought did not make it and died. His wife MiraJane was alive and performing with a Church. Carl is sitting by a little boy that is a mix of MiraJane and Daryl.
Carl was crying in his cell at the West Georgia Prison. He wanted to save his mother and sister. He had to shoot his mother to save her. His father lost all sense of sanity until a few days later. He felt ignored by all but Daryl. He walked over to Daryl and said, “I need to talk to someone. I do not want to live in this prison anymore.”
Daryl hearing this said, “Not much you can do about it now. You have your family here.” Daryl was shocked when Carl stood up angrily.
Carl shouted, “You don't understand. No one ever does.” He ran out of the cell block.
Daryl shook his head and walked over to Carol. He asked, “What is wrong with Carl?”
Carl ran for the gate as he thought, 'I need to get out of here. No one listens to me. I need a friend that I can talk to.' Carl locked the front gate and left after he gave a copy of the gate key to Daryl saddlebag. He walked for hours and fell asleep inside a building that he found walking.
The next day Carl noticed that the doors to the building opens and there are humans walking into the building.
A woman smiled at Carl and said, “I see we have a person to come worship here. What is your name young man?”
Carl smiled sadly and said, “Carl ma'am. What is your name?”
The woman said, “MiraJane Dixon. I am going to be singing something that those things outside can't stand and they die.”
Carl said, “I ran away from home. No one wants to hear me. I would love to hear you sing.”
MiraJane said smiling, “Thank you. I will listen to your problem if you want to tell me about it.”
Carl said smiling, “After you sing okay?”
MiraJane said, “Alright then it will have to wait for all the others to get here.” She sat down beside Carl and started to hum.
Carl smiled and sat in the back pew as a young boy came and sat beside him.
The boy said, “Hello. My name is Daryl. I will sit through the service with you.”
Carl said, “My name is Carl.”
A man walked to the stage and turned on the speakers. Bells tolled through the hall. The man said, “We should get this service started. I am the song leader and we will be really starting in a few minutes.”
At the prison, Rick ran to Daryl and shook him hard. He said, “Daryl get up. Carl is missing.”
Daryl said, “Damn it. That is just great. The kid goes running off and we have to look for him.”
Glenn said, “Car is ready to go. I will tell Maggie and the rest.” Glenn ran into the cell block and told them. He ran back out to get to the car.
Daryl walked to the car as Rick ran to the car. Daryl was grumbling the whole way to the car. Daryl thought back to a time when he loved the mornings. Daryl said softly as he opened the door, “not since my mira.” Daryl climbed in the car and slammed the door.
The car drove off as the door closed and Beth opened the gate. Beth closed the gate and noticed Carol standing next to her. Beth said, “They will bring Carl back. We just have to keep the faith.” Carol nodded and they both walked back into the cell block after the gate was locked.
At the church, the man stands up at the front. Other humans walk into the church. The man starts playing the guitar and said, “Welcome one and all. My name is Jeffery Axle. I am going to start our song service off with a song called 800 pound Jesus. I must remind everyone that should our song service and dinner go beyond night fall you will be remanded here just for your safety.”
Jeffery starts to sing,
“I saw a garage sale
Pulled up in the yard
Found a statue of Jesus
It was eight feet tall
He held out his arms
And he seemed all alone
So I loaded him up
And drove him home
Out by my driveway he
Looks down the street
With his long hair and sandals made
Of rebar and concrete
I painted him white with a long purple robe
He's a rock of ages on our gravel road
He's an eight-hundred pound Jesus
Standing taller than a tree
He's an eight-hundred pound Jesus
A bigger man than you or me"
The door opened at the back of the church and closed fast. Rick, Glenn, and Daryl walked into the church. They noticed that it was full of humans. They sit down and listen.
Carl stiffened as his father sat next to him but tried not to let it bother him.
Daryl pointed out to Rick that Carl was sitting right next to him.
Jeffery continued to sing,
“I thought losing my job was
The end of the world
Till my best pal ran off with my best girl
I felt suicidal with no real friends
So I walked outside with a rope in my hand
Out by that statue there's a big old tree
So I stood on his shoulders
And I counted to three
I had every intention of buying the farm
But when I jumped off he caught me in his arms
He's an eight-hundred pound Jesus
Standing taller than a tree
He's an eight-hundred pound Jesus
A bigger man than you or me
I wanted to return the favor to him
Cause I never had a more solid friend
So I planted some flowers
All around his feet
And I bought him a flock
Of ceramic sheep
He's an eight-hundred pound Jesus
Standing taller than a tree
He's an eight-hundred pound Jesus
A bigger man than you or me
He's a bigger man
Than you or me"
As Jeffery finished the song, MiraJane walked on the stage and took the microphone from Jeffery. She said, “Yes Jeff, Jesus is a bigger man than you or me.”
Daryl gasped at seeing MiraJane on the stage. He whispered, “can't be.” He looked worried that Glenn or Rick might of heard him.
Carl started to smile as he listened to MiraJane talk.
MiraJane said, “This time reminds me of a scripture that is my son's favorite. It goes like this: 'In Isaiah 40:31 read the words-- They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, They shall mount up on wing like eagles, they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.'”
Daryl gasped and stood. He walked to the front of the church just as he did when he was young with his wife singing.
MiraJane shook her head at seeing Daryl walk. The music started and MiraJane started singing,
“High in the mountain cliffs an eagle builds her nest,
far above this world’s evil she lets her babies rest.
An just like that eagle my back is to the wall I’ll run to the rock of
my salvation he’ll see me through it all
For if I were an eagle I spread my wings and
fly far above this old world tell all my troubles good bye
then one day soon I set my feet on the highest mountain
peak and look down to the valley below were I used to be
Once I lived in the valley and each day was the same
nothing to look forward to only heart ache and pain
and then one day I realized there’s more to life than this
I’ll just rise upon the wings of an eagle and see what I have missed
For if I were an eagle I spread my wings and fly
far above this old world tell all my troubles good bye
then one day soon I set my feet on the highest mountain peak
and look down to the valley below were I used to be
For one day soon I’ll take a flight far above this world below
And when I hear that trumpet sound I’ll be ready to go
I’ll drop my weight and then I’ll rise for all the world to see
that I don’t need the wings of an eagle when he sets my sprit free
For if I were an eagle I spread my wings and fly
far above this old world tell all my troubles good bye
then one day soon I set my feet on the highest mountain peak
and look down to the valley below were I used to be
one day soon I set my feet on the highest mountain peak
and look down to the valley below were I used to be”
Daryl was crying at the sound of MiraJane's voice. Daryl smiled through his tears as MiraJane started to sing another song.
“On Golgotha's hill,
Our Savior was placed,
To save this world,
Through His marvelous grace,
And on that same hill,
A battle was won,
For sin and death were conquered there,
By God's only Son.
And grave where's your victory,
And death where's thy sting,
Sin has been defeated,
By our blessed king,
So when the fear of death,
Sweep's over you,
On that final day,
Remember Jesus
Has conquered the grave.
Now Lazarus, he was laid,
In a cold dark tomb,
But the giver of life,
Would be there soon,
For death chains had bound him,
And took away his life,
But those chains were broken
When Jesus said arise.
And grave where's your victory,
And death where's thy sting,
Sin has been defeated,
By our blessed king,
So when the fear of death,
Sweep's over you,
On that final day,
Remember Jesus
Has conquered the grave.
When the fear of death,
Sweep's over you,
On that final day,
Remember Jesus
Has conquered the grave.”
MiraJane said, “Jesus conquered the grave for each and everyone of us. I heard in my lifetime many things about how blessed others are or how they hope to be. I will tell you what as long as there is love and hope then you are truly blessed. I know that people say the blessings from the Lord is fake. With what we are witnessing I might agree with that. I do not think this is the end times that are revealed in the book of Revelations.”
Daryl nodded as the rest of the church said, “Amen.”
Carl started to cry and curled into Rick's side.
MiraJane started to talk again, “I have lost much with this plague but I know that the blessings for me in this world are still being poured out.”
The music starts,
“As the world looks upon me, as I struggle along
They say I have nothing, but they are so wrong
In my heart I'm rejoicing, how I wish they could see
Thank you Lord, for your blessings on me
There's a roof up above me
I've a good place to sleep
There's food on my table
And shoes on my feet
You gave me your love Lord
And a fine family
Thank you Lord, for your blessings on me
Now I know I'm not wealthy, and these clothes , they're not new
I don't have much money, but Lord I have you
And to me that's all that matters, though the world cannot see
Thank you Lord, for your blessings on me”
Daryl noticed a young boy walk up to MiraJane and grab another microphone. The young boy joins MiraJane in singing,
“There's a roof up above me
I've a good place to sleep
There's food on my table
And shoes on my feet
You gave me your love Lord
And a fine family
Thank you Lord, for your blessings on me
Thank you Lord, for your blessings on me”
MiraJane said, “That is right. Well it looks like my son and I have taken this to late in the day. It looks to be a few hours left of daylight. Dinner is now served in the basement. Go eat and visit with each other. We will then conclude for the night so we can sleep.”
Daryl noticed the young boy left the stage and opened the door to the basement. He rose and walked to the stage. He gasped out softly, “Mira...”
MiraJane turned around and said, “Yes?”
Daryl said nothing but turned his back.
Jeffery said, “MiraJane, you better go check on your son. Go.”
MiraJane nodded and walked off.
Jeffery turned to Daryl and said, “You have some nerve coming back into her life. You should just go, Dixon.”
Daryl said, “Let my Mira tell me to go. You used to be my friend now you are telling me to go when my wife is alive.” Daryl walked down into the basement. He walked over to Rick and Glenn who were eating. He grabbed a plate.
Glenn said, “Daryl what is wrong?”
Daryl slammed the plate down and said, “Nothing. Let it rest.”
MiraJane brought drinks to the table for Daryl, Glenn, and Rick.
Daryl noticed a note attached to his. It read, “upstairs please, my love.” Daryl knew that his Mira is still there. He rose and walked upstairs.
MiraJane grabbed her son's arm and walked upstairs with him. She stopped and said, “Love....”
Daryl turned around and looked at the ground.
MiraJane said, “There was a time when I called you that and you would look at me. What happened?”
Daryl said, “You and Axle together now?”
MiraJane looked confused and said, “Where would you get this idea?”
Daryl said, “Jeff said that I should have not come back to you. I gave you everything I had and more. You and him have a child.”
MiraJane shook her head and said, “One moment, my love.” She turned toward the boy and said, “Daryl why don't you get our mats ready for the night.”
The boy nodded and started opening the mats.
Daryl's jaw droppped. He shook his head and said, “Jeffery allows his son to be named for me?”
MiraJane smiled and said, “My son's name is Daryl Dixon Jr.” She touched his chin and continued, “I named him after his father that being my husband Daryl Dixon Sr.”
Daryl said, “He is mine.”
MiraJane nodded and said, “I have always been faithful.” She turned and said, “Baby come here.”
The boy walked over and said, “What mama?”
MiraJane said, “Little one, you want to know your papa?” The boy nodded and MiraJane grabbed Daryl's hand as she continued, “This is your papa who you are named after.”
The boy looked at Daryl and said, “Papa??”
Daryl nodded and said, “Yep little one.” Daryl was shocked when the boy jumped in his arms. He was more startled when he felt tears touch his neck. Daryl asked MiraJane, “What is wrong with him?”
MiraJane shrugged his shoulders.
Many of the people made their way back to the upstairs and Jeffery said, “Let's end this service. As we all relax for the night. MiraJane why don't you sing another song?”
MiraJane nodded and took the microphone. She said looking at Daryl holding their son, “This is a song that my husband loves to hear me sing.”
The music started and Daryl smiled still holding his son,
“Many times in my in child hood when we've traveled so far
By nightfall how weary I'd grown
Fathers arms would slip around me and gently he'd say
My child we're going home
Going home, I'm going home
There is nothing to hold me here
I've caught a glimpse of that Heavenly land
Praise God, I'm going home”
Daryl started to softly sing along with MiraJane,
“Now the twilight is fading, the day soon shall end
Lord, I get homesick, the farther I roam
But the Father has led me each step of the way
And now I'm going home
Going home, I'm going home
There is nothing to hold me here
I've caught a glimpse of that Heavenly land
Praise God, I'm going home”
MiraJane smiled as the music stopped. She said, “Now find your mats and sleep. Morning will come soon. Then everyone must head their own way.”
Daryl stood with his son who refused to let go of him. He walked over to MiraJane and said, “I will keep watch. It seems our son is glued to me.”
MiraJane giggled softly and said, “Two hours and my shift is over. You get some sleep. We can talk in the morning before you go.”
Daryl said, “We go. I am not letting either of you go again. Come morning you and our little one will be going with me and my friends.”
MiraJane nodded and said, “Go rest. I will be over there in two hours.” She pushed Daryl away and pointed at her mat.
Daryl smiled and walked over to the mat. He sat down and laid his son on the mat next to him. He thought to himself, 'My wife still wants me. Why did Axle tell me to go? He knew that I would want to be with my wife. I have a son. My family will be whole when I find out what happened to Merle.'
MiraJane smiled to herself. She felt tears collect in her eyes. She walked over to her mat and noticed that Daryl had fallen asleep. She laid down next to her family and rest.
Daryl woke at a pressure on his chest and leg. He opened his eyes and saw his son cuddled on his chest and MiraJane was sleeping. He noticed that she was using his leg for a pillow. He felt pride swell in his heart. He groaned and noticed that MiraJane woke up.MiraJane felt Daryl twitch and that woke her up. She looked at Daryl and smiled. She sat up and pulled their son off Daryl's chest. She said quietly, “He weighs a ton when he sleeps. He got that from his father.” She placed their son on the mat next to them.
Daryl chuckled and said, “You were heavier when you slept.”
MiraJane said, “Daryl. That is not funny.” She leaned in and kissed Daryl. She pulled back a little breathless. She said, “I missed that. I missed you all while I was on the road.”
Daryl kissed her again. When he pulled away, he said, “I missed you as well. I wondered why you were gone for so long. Your dad said that it would be for only a year.”
MiraJane said, “I was it was just that our son was born and got ill. It took two and a half years to cure him. Jeff came to the place then and said that you were gone and it did not look like you would live very long following your brother around. Last year our son got ill again and that is when I decided that he should be at home to live out his life.” There was a sadness to her voice as she finished out her sentence.
Daryl noticed the sad note to his wife's voice. He said, “What do you mean?”
MiraJane said, “His kidneys are failing him. I am amazed that he lasted as long as he did. It is the one reason I was thinking of retiring from the singing. Now I have another reason and that being my husband needs me.”
Daryl chuckled and said, “Our boy won't die. He is a Dixon after all only a Dixon can kill a Dixon.”
MiraJane laughed and said, “You were saying that even when we were little. I guess you are right.”
Daryl said, “I know that I am.” He kissed MiraJane.
