Science and Magic
It was the dawn of the Queen's curse in the enchanted forest, and a young girl gazed out the window of her castle's tower. Soon the winds began to kick up and thick clouds of black-ish green smoke filled the land, moving at a rapid pace towards her home. Quickly kneeling on the floor, she tried to keep herself calm and her breathing relaxed as the windows shattered and things fell over. Outstretching her arms and putting her head back as she felt all the tension leave her thin body. The roof was soon ripped away, and she was engulfed in the smoke making her pass out.She woke up in a strange bedroom with soft white walls, looking down at herself she found herself dressed in a black night dress with silver beading in the shape of a star on the front. Pushing the blue blankets off, she placed her feet on the sandy colored carpet and stretched before getting up.
Going to the window she looked out onto her back yard, which was taken up mostly by a large in-ground pool, that appeared to be embedded in stone. Another smaller pool stood off to the side and steam could be seen rising from the water, making her crack a smile.Stepping over to a wooden dresser, she pulled open the drawers looking through the different articles of clothing. T-shirts, blue jeans and skirts of every color could be found making her smile as she decided on an outfit, and placed the items on her bed before exploring her new home.
Stepping out into the hallway she found a bathroom, covered in gray tiles and white walls. A single shower stall stood off to the left draped in navy blue curtains, which matched the rugs by the sink and commode. Sliding the curtain aside, she gave the nobs a turn and jumped back when water began to flow from the shower head. She became even more intrigued when it turned warm, causing her to discard her night dress and step inside.Letting the water soak into her long brown hair and down her pale back, made her breath a satisfied sigh. The fresh scent of coconuts permeated the air, as she rubbed a jelly-like substance into her hair that she had gotten from a nearby blue bottle.
Once she had finished washing up, she put her night dress back on along with a red robe that had been hanging on the door before heading back out into the narrow hallway passing an open storage area that had been stuffed with extra blankets, towels, coats and cleaning supplies. Directly across from that was another bedroom, which was somewhat smaller than her own. A wooden desk stood against the wall near the window, papers had been scattered along the flat surface including a folder containing a deed to a small shop called The Music Box. She smiled at the interesting name as she put the folder down and continued to explore her new home.
Down a short distance more was the third bedroom, which was considerably bigger than the previous. The walls were also white but went well with the deep amethyst blankets on the full sized bed against the wall.
There was also a small balcony, which looked out onto a thick forest across the road. A sign could be seen a little ways off in the distance, “Leaving Storybrook” had been painted on it in white letters. Sliding open the glass door, she was instantly met with a freezing breeze making her shiver and pull her robe tighter before stepping out.
The road appeared long and silent but also somewhat strange with its hard, black look and the yellow lines going down the center. It also seemed somewhat wider than they had been back home but the fresh scent of pine from the surrounding trees remained the same.
Walking down the carpeted stairs, she found herself looking straight ahead at the kitchen with its sandy colored tiles and white cabinets. It too had many things she had never seen before the first of which, was a kind of drawer with a series of metal shelving to hold dishes in place. Seeing how it was next to the sink, she assumed this only assisted with the choir of having to wash them by hand.
There was a bar near the kitchen stove with a few dark wooden stools, she jumped back a bit when she turned a knob and flames appeared but she quickly recovered and smiled before turning it back off before investigating the double door fridge. It was at this time she heard her stomach growl, and realized just how hungry she was. Reaching inside, she pulled out eggs, milk, bread, red and orange peppers.Pulling out a frying pan from a lower cabinet, she set it on the stove before thumbing through a cookbook she had found against the far wall. Propping the book up in a wire stand, she began chopping the veggies, mixing the eggs and heating the slices of bread up in a nearby toaster oven. Finding a kettle she set that on the stove, and placed a tea bag in a nearby cup.
Once she had finished and plated everything, she took it into the living room which was past a small dining area. Sitting on her soft black couch, she placed the plate down on the wooden coffee table before finding a small wand type thing. The word “power” could been seen just beneath a red button and soon the large glass box in front of her began blaring words from a cooking show. The picture soon cleared to reveal an older woman with a high pitched voice, explaining how to prepare a dish calling for lobster. The strange creatures looked like large bugs with claws in front and a tail that curled under their bodies. She continued to watch as they were placed into a large pot of boiling water, and became even more intrigued at their red color when they emerged. As she continued to watch, she learned about the different sizes and ways to prepare them, which also made her wonder where she could obtain these creatures in this new town.
She returned to her room to get dressed, instantly she loved the new clothes and began brushing out her hair only to pull it back into a ponytail that hung loosely down her back. Finding a green camo fleece hanging near the front door, she threw it on before grabbing her black leather purse.Unzipping the front pouch she found a light blue wallet, which held her I.D card and to her great relief, her name had been left unchanged. She also found pieces of paper with images of men on them, along with different sized coins of copper and silver.
“This must be this world's form of currency.” She thought to herself before heading out.
Her driveway had been fully paved and was rather long with a small shed, a red bicycle could be seen leaning against it making her check it out. Straddling the white seat, she tried to ride in small circles but found it difficult to balance. She finally gave up after almost falling, and gave the bike a frustrated kick before starting to walk towards the center of town.
She walked for what felt like miles and soon found herself in front of Granny's diner, the wonderful aroma of coffee and bacon ensnaring her senses. Making a mental note to return there later she continued on making sure to keep an eye out for familiar faces from home. The square was a very busy place with people walking or driving everywhere.
The cars made her nervous but she noticed all of them had tags towards the very front and rear, which had different letters and numbers on them but also had the image of a loon and the word “Maine” under that. Feeling both excited by this new world and somewhat overwhelmed, she located her shop which was stuffed in between two others. Unlocking the blue door and flipping on the lights, she was surprised by how big it actually was on the inside. The floors were polished hardwoods, which reflected the lights from above nicely.
Rows and rows of records stood in the middle of the floor broken off into different categories from classical, rock, blues, country, and everything else in between. Upon the nearby walls in a separate section of the store where a series of guitars, drums setts, flutes and keyboards along with shelves of sheet music and amps. Going back towards the front door stood a display of books many of which, were biographies of composers like Mozart, Verdi, and Tchaikovsky“Okay, so I'm selling music this should be interesting!” She laughed to herself as she put on a green apron that had been hanging on the back room door and flipping her sign to open.
It wasn't long before her first customer came in making her gasp at who it was, he had somewhat short dark hair and a crazy look in his eyes. He was dressed in a white uniform with his name on a plastic blue tag, which had been pinned to his shirt.
“Jefferson, it's so good to see you!” She smiled throwing her arms around him in a hug.
“I see you remember too, how convenient.” He pointed out, pushing her away his eye twitching a bit.
“Jefferson, I swear I tried to help you. I asked to go with you guys when you went to Wonderland so I'd end up being the sacrifice to the Queen of hearts but Regina wouldn't have it! She said even though my magic wasn't nearly strong enough to bring her out, she wasn't willing to risk it.” She insisted.
“Why would that mater if she got out?” He asked.
“You don't know who the Queen of Hearts really is do you?” She asked cracking a smile.
“No but I'm not really sure I care at the moment Lilly!” He answered clearly getting annoyed.
“She's Regina's mother she's the one who killed the stable boy remember, the one the doctor tried to revive? Speaking of which, do you know if he's here? Because if the curse reached Wonderland then there's no reason why it wouldn't reach other lands as well, right?” She asked excitedly.
“You should know, you remember everything too!” He pointed out.
“Regina doesn't know that I remember yet, when the curse cloud hit I tried one last spell and to be honest, I wasn't even sure if it would work. I hadn't even seen her or anybody else in months, I barricaded myself in my castle after they locked Rumple away. I know you wish to be with Grace again more than anything and believe me, if there was a way for me to either wake her up or erase your memory I would. I've always liked you, I had such an interest in both you and Rumple during my teenage years.” She confessed leaning against the counter.
“You didn't tell Grace what happened did you?” He asked becoming more tense.
“No. Only the neighbors she was staying with knew the real story, I actually became a regular visitor of hers I'd give her a gold piece and we'd go for walks in the woods and talk about how much she missed you but she was never angry at you, and I'd always promise that you'd see each other again someday. I know we have at least twenty-eight years before anything happens here and as I said before, if I could make things any easier for you I would. As long as there's no magic here, there's nothing I can do.” She explained.
Saying nothing he turned and left, leaving her alone again until the early evening when she closed up. Feeling very hungry, she walked over to Granny's and was surprised to find a father and his son who she didn't recognize, sitting at the counter. She took the stool next to them, as she looked over the room that was full of people enjoying meals at small tables covered by soft cloths. Waitresses in red and white uniforms rushed from table to table, as they took food from the kitchen window. Granny was busy behind the counter filling mugs of beer, and also serving food.
The menu listed many different items, many of which she had never seen or heard of before but sounded very good. She finally settled on a cheeseburger with fries and a coke, which arrived right away. Taking a sip of it, she was surprised by the sweet taste and the bubbles that tickled her nose.
“You look like you're really enjoying that.” The boy laughed, which quickly snapped her back.
“A good coke is always nice after work, you know?” She smiled.
“What do you do here?” The older man asked, taking a swig of his beer.
“I have my own shop called the music box, I sell records and instruments” She answered.
“And are you from here?” He asked.
“All my life, I think I'd be afraid to leave this place.” She smiled.
The door chimed open and in walked the Queen herself making a nervous chill go down Lilly's spine. She looked pretty much the same except her dark hair had been cut short, and she was dressed in a gray business suit. She loudly cleared her throat at the boy, who turned his attention to her.
“You're in my seat.” She informed him sternly.
“I'm sorry miss..” His father began to say.
“Mills, Mayor Mills. I always sit in that seat.” She replied, glaring at the boy who just shrugged.
“I'm already sitting here.”
Saying nothing Lilly slid down, allowing her to take her seat. “I just spoke with our mechanic and he tells me you're car will be fixed by the end of the week.” She said.
“Really? He told me it would take two weeks just to get the parts.” The man replied, placing money from his wallet onto the counter.
“Well things tend to get done quicker when the Mayor asks for them, and I'd hate to keep you from returning too...”
“New Jersey, home of the boss!” He laughed before awkwardly clearing his throat and thanking her again. His boy started following him out but paused before returning to her and handing her a green and red craft that appeared to be made out of a stiff ribbon.
“What's this?” She asked looking disgusted.
“A gift for letting me sit in your seat.” He answered.
“For me?” She asked pleasantly surprised.
The boy said nothing but smiled before backing off and leaving with his dad.
“That was sweet, not bad for a couple of outsiders. This burger's amazing Granny, can I get another coke when you get a second?” Lilly asked holding her glass.
“That's your fourth one Lilly, you're gonna be floating in a minuet.” She teased filling up her glass.
“You seem to be in a good mood tonight.” Regina pointed out.
“It's just been a really good day. Hey Granny when you get a chance, can I get a hot fudge sundae with rainbow sprinkles?” She asked never loosing the child-like glee in her eyes.
Granny laughed as she filled the order. “I don't know what's gotten into you today Lilly but I hope it lasts, it's been a long time since I've seen you so happy.” She smiled placing the sweet treat in front of her.
“Thanks Granny. So how's your day been going Mayor?” She asked
“Fine. What are your plans for this evening?” Regina answered.
“I think I'm just gonna head home. If you're not busy yourself you could swing by, I have something I need to talk to you about anyway.” Lilly replied paying her tab and heading out.
Changing into her pajamas when she got home, she lit a fire in the wood stove before turning on the t.v and wrapping herself in a blue fleece blanket that had been draped over the back of the couch. An hour passed before she heard the sound of heels on the porch making her jump up and come to the door before Regina even had a chance to knock.
“Thanks for coming Regina, have a seat and I'll make this quick.” She said, putting the t.v on mute before joining her on the couch. “I wanna start by congratulating you on casting the curse and also tell you that just as your spell has worked for you, so has mine. I remember everything from before but I'm willing to cast that old life aside and embrace this new one. I just wanted to be honest with you about it and tell you myself before Jefferson rats me out.”
“You've spoken to him already? How did that happen?” She asked her eyes narrowing.
“In my shop, he came seeking me out and I explained to him what happened, and how I tried to help. I still feel guilty for it but I told him as long as there's no magic here, I can't do anything and he just left. I haven't really seen anybody else yet, I wanted to try and get used to running my shop. It took me about an hour or so just to figure out the cash machine and the record player, but I got it and I love this place so much already!” She smiled settling into the corner of the couch.
“It's good you're enjoying yourself but if I'm going to allow you to remain free, there's some things we need to go over.” Regina informed her sitting up more.
Lilly nodded as she pulled the blanket tighter around herself. “I don't mind if you have the Huntsman watch over me, I've got nothing to hide.”
“His name's Graham here, only you and Jefferson's have remained the same.” She replied.
“And what about the Genie? Who is he here? And I'm guessing Dr. Hopper is the cricket? I found his office when I was looking for my shop. And What about Snow and Charming...” Lilly asked.
“Slow down, slow down. Lets focus on one person at a time, shall we? The Genie's name here is Sidney Glass, he is the editor of our local newspaper and you may see him taking pictures around town with his camera. You're right about Hopper, he was the cricket and his job here is the town psychiatrist. You go to him to talk about what's bothering you, you actually see him once a week but I'll get into that later.
As for Snow, she's a teacher here named Mary Margret Blanchard. You'll just call her Mary Margret, and Charming's in a coma in the hospital but you have to pretend not to know him.” Regina explained, glancing over at the t.v where a black and white show was on depicting two women working at a candy factory stuffing chocolates into their uniforms as the treats went whizzing by on a conveyer belt.
“What are you watching?” She asked.
Lilly laughed as she unmuted the t.v. “It's a show called I Love Lucy, I've watched two episodes so far and it's really funny. She always gets into these ridiculous situations, which drive her husband mad. In the last episode, they were in Italy and she was making wine like we used to back home by squishing it with their feet and she ended up getting into a fight with the other woman! It was hysterical.”
“It seems interesting. Now Lilly about Dr. Hopper, you're supposed to see him once a week to talk about the loss of your family, as far as they know you lost your aunt four years ago and are still having difficulties dealing with it.” Regina explained.
Lilly laughed a bit “Could you make me anymore pathetic? I mean sure, I still miss my family from time to time but I really don't think about it's been so long. You've given me a fresh start here Regina, and I fully intend on making the most of it!”
“Alright Lilly. You're no threat to me or my plans so I'll let you do as you wish, as long as you swear to never speak of our land again.” She concluded.
“You got it, madam mayor!” Lilly smiled, relaxing against the couch.
“Well, you have a good night and I'm sure I'll see you around tomorrow.” Regina smiled before leaving.
Walking down the road a ways, she grinned as the lights of the sheriff's cruiser came into view.
“So what do you think Regina?” He asked, stepping out of the car.
“She's fine but I want you and Sidney to keep an eye on her, especially while our visitors are here. Let Sidney know that I want pictures of what she does and where she goes.” She ordered as they drove off.
