Thunder rumbled in the distance. Marceline looked off towards the east, where the bruise colored clouds had swollen across the sky. She took a final drag from her cigarette, and then crushed it under her boot heel. The final show down was coming, and she didn’t think she would make it out alive this time.
She leaned against the sleek Impala, turning her face westward, where the sun still shone. She closed her eyes and breathed deep, smelling the autumn breeze. She relished the scents and sounds of the leaves rustling in the nearby tree, the late crickets buzzing in the grass.
The car shuddered as Dean slammed the trunk. He looked up at Marceline, watching the breeze gently toss her long, dark hair, her beautiful pale face tilted up to the sun. He sighed softly to himself, running a hand through his own hair. He knew well one of them wasn’t going to live after tonight, and it might be time to say goodbye.
He reached into the open window of the back seat, pulling out a bottle of whiskey. He cracked it open and took a mouthful. He went to her side, and leaned on the car. He nudged her arm, offering the bottle. She opened her eyes, turning them to him. One green, and one blue, they still smoldered darkly with malice. He felt his breath hitch in his chest, and he swallowed dryly. She offered a small smile, taking the bottle.
She took a small nip, savoring the burn in her throat, the heat in her belly. Unsatisfied, she tipped the bottle back again, taking a long drink. It burned like hell, but she didn’t mind. It might be the last drink she ever had. Half the bottle gone, she handed it back, his fingers brushing hers. A small shock ran through her, fueling the heat in her lower belly. She sighed and slumped, leaning her head on his shoulder.
Surprised by her gesture of closeness, he put his arm around her shoulders with regret. If only there had been more opportunities for this. They both looked down the hill at the far off highway, the passing cars shining like beetles when the sun glinted off them. Thunder rumbled again, loud and close, but they still had time to relax. The breeze picked up, swirling fallen leaves. Marceline shivered slightly, curling into Dean’s side.
He twined his fingers in her hair, slipping the silky strands between his fingers. He placed a soft kiss on her head, inhaling the scent of her perfume. It made him dizzy, a fire starting within him. He sighed again, knowing this would be only the second, and the last time he could share something this intimate with her. He wanted to grab her, and kiss her, and tell her he was sure he loved her. Instead, he continued to stroke her hair.
Marceline breathed in Dean’s cologne, the manly scent sending another shiver through her. He pulled her closer to him, and lifted her face to his. They only looked at each other, studying each others features. Marceline felt tears sting her eyes as she stared into his dark green ones. Her heart ached the way he looked at her, and she wanted nothing more than to tell him how she felt.
