I knock on the door the night we all get back home. Lizzie's mom answers it. And I'm scared.
"Gordo! Come on in, sweetie. What cha need?"
"I need to talk to you about Lizzie."
"What's going on?" her dad walks in, ruining the moment as usual.
"Alone," I persist.
"Okay, of course," her mom states. We go in the backyard. Sitting on the porch. All I picture are wedding bells. I was scared before of the thought of marriage with Lizzie, but after that kiss we had in Rome, I realized the truth and grew...from a boy to a man.
"So," her mom says and looks at me so knowingly. "Spill the beans."
"I kissed her. Well...she kissed me."
"Lizzie?" Her face brightened in a way that I've never seen before. I didn't know this would be her response.
"Yeah. And I...love...I mean...I don't know what to do."
Across the table, she pressed her hand on mine lightly. "Take it slow. But honestly, Gordo, I'm so excited for the two of you. Just imagine the day you guys go to your first homecoming, your first dance, and then you finish highschool. Off to college. And then you two marry and have kids. And y'all will grow up and have your kids know other kids, and they'll date..."
The man in me turned boyish and soft again. "Whoa, whoa. I love her, but I just... I don't know."
Then, he looked me in the eye and said the most profound thing I've heard from her. "You don't have to worry, Gordo. You two will last. And that's all you need to know."
