Cat and Kryten gave funny looks to the trio entering
the dining hall for supper.
“I
don’t get it mam’s,” Kryten
whispered to the ladies. “They’ve not said a word to one another for two weeks
and now it’s like nothing was ever wrong.”
“Baby,
BB, Shay, spill it,” Cat whined. “You three know something.”
“They
made up, that’s all,” JayV giggled almost sending
Kris and Shayne into hysterics.
“Good
to see you, umm, speaking to them again,” Shayne elbowed Jari.
“Speaking?”
Lister scoffed. “What came out of her mouth wasn’t just speaking.”
Jari
slugged Lister hard in the arm.
“Oww!” he yelped.
“I’ve
warned you Listy, but you never listen,” Rimmer grinned.
“Never
listen to what man?” Cat sat still puzzled.
“Jari,
hold your hand out to Cat,” Rimmer smirked.
She
did, not thinking until after Cat’s reaction. He sniffed her skin and jumped
five feet back from his seat at the table.
“Yeow!” he hollered staring at the trio.
Rimmer yelped after
receiving his own sure to bruise punch in the arm.
“Looks
as though, Mr. Lister isn’t the only one that doesn’t listen,” Kryten grinned with realization.
“Krytes, what’s for supper? I’m starving,” Jari changed the
subject.
****
Jari sat cuddled
close to Lister’s chest under his arm, her legs draped over Rimmer’s
legs. The movie has been over for at least half an hour and she was half
asleep. Yet she couldn’t drop off completely, not with all the laughing and
giggling going on all around her. Everyone was reminiscing again. True, the
tales were amusing but after a while, she felt a bit left out even to the point
that an involuntary whence would overcome her when phrases like “those were the
days” were bantered about.
Jari felt Lister’s
lips press to her hair. She shifted, sitting up kissing him on the mouth and
then stood up stretching.
“If
you all don’t mind, I’m off to bed now,” she moved past Rimsy
kissing him as she went.
“Aww baby, are you sure,” Rimmer
whined. “The evening is still young.”
“It’s
okay, I’m tired. You two just have a good evening. I’ll see you in the morning.
Good night everyone,” she waved her fingers lazily and disappeared through the
swinging doors of the cinema.
Rimmer and Lister looked
back and forth from the still swishing doors and each other. They were
thoroughly puzzled. Jari never left before them.
Someone started up another story but the distracted pair’s focus remained on
the doors.
****
Jari fell into her
bed and soaked in the nice quiet darkness of her rarely used quarters. The boys
would be disappointed but they’d get over it. She drifted into a dreamless
sleep.
****
After
another hour of chatting, Rimsy and Listy had had their fill. Making their way back to their
quarters, they got their second surprise of the evening: Jari
wasn’t there.
“Okay
man,” Lister flopped to the bed,” this is just weird. She hasn’t slept away
from us in three months.”
“Maybe
we wore her out,” Rimmer smiled saucily.
Lister
couldn’t help but return it. “As flattering as that thought is, I don’t think
it is the reason. I was thinkin’ on it since she
left. I think she feels left out.”
“Don’t
be silly, Listy. We make sure she’s always a part of
everything.”
“No
man, there is one thing we can’t help her be a part of: our life before this
dimension. She always gets really quiet when we get to spending a lot of time
talking about the old days. One or two brief stories and she laughs along with
us…”
“We
get too caught up and she gets overwhelmed,” Rimmer
completed his lover’s thought. “She loses her ability to relate.”
“Exactly,”
Lister laid back on the bed. “Smeg! All ‘those were
the good old days’ we spat about.”
Rimmer felt sick, “I
know babe, how on Io can we solve this?” Rimmer
snuggled to Lister.
“I
don’t know how to help her,” Listy cuddled Rimsy closer. “We’ve made plenty of new, very good memories
with her since she became a part of the crew, and especially since she joined
us.”
“Some
very very fantastic ones,” Rimmer
smiled in agreement tracing a finger across the front of Lister’s trousers.
“Mmm,” Lister moaned and then cleared his throat. “Now, we
are talking serious here Arn, I can’t think straight
with you doin’ that!”
“Sorry,
just thinking about the other parts of the nights we were discussing earlier.”
“Hey,”
Lister broke in. “We could make some Floor 13 memories with her.”
“How?”
Rimmer questioned.
“Think
about it. Every dimension has a Floor 13. There has to be a Floor 13 on this
Red.”
“Oh
Listy, that’s brilliant! Surely the Hol’s can get us access.”
They
jumped up and headed for the drive room.
****
The
Holly’s weren’t too sure about the boys idea. No one had been to Floor 13 on
this Red since the accident.
“The
scans all show the floor is stable: air is breathable, structure is stable, and
as far as we can tell the area has no life forms hiding about,” the Holly’s
reported.
“Good,
then just give us access in the lift,” Lister requested.
“It
isn’t that simple Dave,” Hol warned. “Remember the
mess around the Red after I released you from stasis. No one has cleaned that
area of remains of the prisoners.”
“And
some of those remains could be this dimensions JayVee
and Shayne,” Holly added.
“Holly,
any records on who was incarcerated on this Floor 13,” Rimmer
questioned.
“It’ll
take me a while to do the search. It has been ages since I was in those memory
banks. Well, over 3 million years since,” she quipped.
“Let
us know as soon as you have anything Holly,” Rimmer
sat back in his chair with his arms propped behind his head. “Now the question
is do we let the others know we are accessing the area or not.”
“Well,”
Lister said. “If the girls aren’t on the list, then I say we keep it secret.
The Holly’s will know in case we disappeared on everyone and were needed for
some odd reason. It would be special memories just for the 3 of us.”
“Yeah,
but it’s just the three of us which is the real issue. She is looking to
connect with the others as well,” Rimmer pointed out.
“The issue of the remains of the prisoners. There should be a funeral. I think
we should include the others. We don’t have to tell them everything but just
that it was something that we got to thinking about after all the reminiscing.”
“I
agree but it is going to take forever to pick up the individual remains,” Lister
noted.
“Other
than the girls, if they are there, I think the best solution would be to vent
the whole floor to space,” Hol suggested.
“Okay
boys, I’ve found the files,” Holly interrupted. “The girls names specifically
as we know them aren’t listed. However, I think that their equivalents in this
dimension were on Floor 13. I have two similar names. Due to the fact that it
was lights out when the accident occurred, they were in their cell and their
specific remains should be easy to locate.”
“Okay,
we have to tell the others tomorrow morning,” Lister sighed.
****
It
was a somber day. The others couldn’t believe it at first when Lister and Rimmer told them about their thinking of Floor 13. Why
hadn’t they thought about it before now? All this time on this Red and it had
never occurred to any of them to search Floor 13 in this dimension. Kryten and Lister went to retrieve the remains of the girls
and, with JayVee’s reminder, those of Kill Crazy.
They set the three pods off to a special place that Jari
had suggested and Rimmer happily obliged the
coordinates.
The
Ace Rimmer light bee field. It couldn’t have worked
out better. The others were honored that Jari had
thought of such a special place, especially in the case of Kill Crazy. Although
it wouldn’t be a story to reminisce on for the good times, it brought Jari a little further in with a more direct link to the
group’s past.
It
was even more somber when Lister made the order for the Holly’s to vent the
Floor. They all watched from the observation dome as the dust of the other
inmates were finally laid to rest, as it were, in the ultimate final resting
place of the dark and quiet of deep space.
