“IOLAUS!”
Tori cried in surprise. She sat up in
the tub and the soapsuds were slowly sliding down her shoulders and chest. Her bountiful breasts were becoming more and
more visible.
“TORI! You’re all right! I was really . . . I thought that maybe . . . Ares . . .” Iolaus
turned eight shades of red before he realized she was naked. He quickly turned around and apologized.
“I’m
sorry, Tori. I probably should have
knocked first, but that pesky priest didn’t even want me to come in here. I didn’t realize that you might be
indisposed,” he said shyly.
While
his back was to her, she stood, wrapped herself in the drying sheet and got out
of the water.
“That’s
okay, Iolaus. I’m just surprised to see
you. What are you doing here? Hercules isn’t with you, is he?”
“No,
I left Herc back at the village. I
didn’t tell him I was coming here, knowing he would insist on coming
along. But that would have left the
village unprotected. So then he would
have tried to talk me out this.”
“Talk
you out of what?”
“Rescuing
you!” he smiled.
She
giggled. He looked so cute and
admirable. “Iolaus, you know I don’t
need rescuing. I can take care of
myself.”
“Well,
maybe. But you don’t know Ares like I
do. I was worried that something may
have happened to you. I knew you were
still alive because Victoria is still alive.
But I had to try. I had to find
out for myself that you were all right.”
“That’s
sweet. But as you can see, I’m doing
just fine. How is Victoria, anyway?”
“She’s
surviving, as well as the rest of the folk.
But everyone is still on edge, thinking that Ares is going to come back
any day.”
“Well,
Iolaus,” Tori said cheerfully, “I’ve got some good news for you. That is, if everything works out like I hope
it does.”
Iolaus
started to turn around again, thinking Tori was dressed, but she now had her
back to him, with one foot up on the bed, drying off her leg. Iolaus let his eyes wander down her shapely
form, lingering a bit on her pleasantly round buttocks, before turning his head
away from her once again. He could feel
his ears turn red, partially from embarrassment, partly because he liked what
he saw.
“What
are you talking about, Tori? Ares is
not going to let go of this that easily.
And what are you doing in here, lounging around, anyway? I figured he would have locked you away or
something worse.” Suddenly, Iolaus
remembered about the Hind’s blood that Tori had and he gasped, “Did you use the
dagger? You didn’t kill Ares, did
you?”e
She
laughed as she turned around and finished to lace up her tunic. “Not quite, Iolaus. Ares and I have come to sort of . . . an
agreement, you could say.”
Iolaus
narrowed his eyes in question at her.
“What kind of agreement?”
Tori
suddenly felt embarrassed, or maybe, ashamed, and up went her emotional walls
of defense. “What does it matter to
you, Iolaus? It’s between Ares and I,
anyway.” She plopped down on the bed
and started to angrily lace up a boot.
Iolaus
walked over to her and cupped her chin.
“It matters, because I care hap happens to you, Tori.” He spoke with a soft voice that was full of
feeling and emotion.
They
stared into each others eyes for an endless moment and Iolaus asked, “He’s not
forcing you to do anything against your will, is he?”
She
shook her head “no,” pulling away from the gentle touch of his fingers on her
chin. She looked down at the floor, not
wanting to make eye contact with him.
For some weird reason, she felt guilty, like she had let him down by
joining with Ares.
But
from the moment she first saw him, even in his human disguise, she had known
deep within her heart that she could never settle for anything less than the
gorgeous war god. And now that she had
felt his touch, she was hooked for life.
As fond as she was of Iolaus, and obvious as it was that he felt the
same way, it would never be.
“Are
you sure, Tori?” he insisted.
She
looked up with sorrowful eyes and responded, “Yes, Iolaus, I’m sure. He hasn’t forced me into anything, I
swear! On the contrary, he’s been more
than generous with me. He could have
easily wiped me off the face of the earth for everything I’ve pulled here
recently. But he hasn’t. He’s been merciful and forgiving with me.”
Iolaus
studied his friend, trying to see if she really believed what she was telling
him. “That’s what worries me,” he said.
“What?”
“Ares
is never forgiving, not unless there is something in it for him. He would never spare someone’s life because
he felt compassion, or forgiveness. No
sir-ree! He’s up to something. I just know it. Come on! Let’s get you
out of here before he gets back.”
“No,
Iolaus, I’m not going anywhere. I
can’t. I won’t.”
Now
he was confused. She was refusing
freedom? He couldn’t understand why she
would want to stay here.
“Tori,
what is going on? Is there something
you’re not telling me?”
She
stood and gave him a half-hearted smile.
“Iolaus, I can’t go with you because then the village really would be in
danger again.”
“He is
keeping you here against your will!” Iolaus surmised. “So what, he’s blackmailing you into staying here by threatening
to take revenge on the villagers if you don’t?
Well, not any longer. Ares won’t
do anything while Hercules is in Ramel.
Come on, let’s go now, before he returns. Once we get back to the village, we’ll be safe.” He reached for her arm to lead her out of
the room.
Tori
pulled away from him. “Iolaus –
NO! I told you I’m not going. Now if you would just calm down and let me
explain, you would understand why.”
Iolaus
was becoming nervous. He was
anticipating Ares’ return at any moment and didn’t want to get caught in the
god’s chambers. He glared confusingly
at Tori, looking impatient.
Tori
moved to the table and sat down. She
picked up a piece of fruit and studied it absently, stalling for time to come
up with the right words to say what she needed.
“Tori,
I’m not going to leave here without you,” he stated firmly, wanting to fill the
silent air between them.
“Listen,
my friend, I appreciate your concern for me, but really, it’s not necessary. You’ll just have to trust me and believe me
when I tell you that I’m going to help Ares do something and if everything goes
as planned, then he won’t be bothering the villagers for their virgins.”
“I
don’t understand, what are you saying?
If you help him then he’ll leave us alone?”
“That’s
right.”
“And
you believe him? Tori, don’t be a
fool. He’s just using you to get what
he wants.”
“That’s
not true! It was my idea. He was ready to go back to the village this
morning, but I talked him out of it. I
had a better idea that offered the same outcome. So he decided to give it a try.
If it works, he won’t return to Ramel and the people can go on with
their business.”
“You
offered to help him?”
She
nodded.
“Freely?”
Again,
she nodded.
“All
to help keep the village safe from harm?”
“That
was part of it, yes.”
“What’s
the other part?” he asked, unsure of whether or not he wanted to hear her
answer.
“I’ll
tell you about it some other time.
Right now, you should probably go.
It’s no secret that Ares isn’t too fond of you, Iolaus. I don’t want you to be here when he gets
back. Okay? Now, get going.”
She
tried to scoot him out of the room and on his way, but he refused to leave just
yet.
He
turned and held both of her arms at the elbow and looked her deeply in the
eyes. “I don’t want to leave you here,”
he whispered.
“You
must. Now go.” The tears were beginning to welt up and her
words came out sounding choked up.
“Please
come with me, Tori.”
“No,”
she softly cried while backing away from him.
“Why?”
Suddenly,
a blue and white flash of light came from directly behind Tori. Ares materialized with both his hands on her
shoulders, looking quite smug.
“Because,
Iolaus, she belongs to me now,” Ares answered for her. “Don’t you, my sweet?” He kissed her cheek and pressed his body
against her back. She immediately
became aroused by his touch and the sound of his voice purring in her ear and
couldn’t help responding to his close proximity by closing her eyes and letting
out a soft moan.
“You
see, Iolaus? She wants to be
here with me. To service me, oh, I mean
serve me,” he cruelly teased the blonde hunter. Then he glared at the man harshly. “Now, get out of my temple before you make me break my promise to
Tori about not killing you today.”
“Tori?” Iolaus looked to his friend for assurance
that was what she really wanted.
Tori
opened her glazed-over eyes and shook her head. “I’m sorry, Iolaus, but you better do as he says.”
Iolaus
frowned. It was like a dark cloud just
took away all of the sunshine that his eyes normally harbored. His shoulders slumped forward and he hung
his head, slowly turning around.
Without saying another word, he pulled a long object out of his backpack
and leaned it against the wall. Then he
quietly left the room, left the temple, and started back down the road to join
Hercules in Ramel.

As soon as Iolaus was gone,
Ares’ seductive appearance changed instantly to one of anger and
disapproval. He let go of Tori’s
shoulders with a slight shove and stood glaring at her as she walked over to
see what Iolaus had left. It was her
sword. She had to leave it behind with
him when she was playing the part of the innocent virgin for Ares.
She ran her hand over the
cold steel of the blade. She felt bad
that he got caught up in this whirlwind that was her life and that she ended up
hurting him, after he was so kind to her.
Ares stern voice pulled her
from her thoughts. “What was he
doing in my temple? In my chambers? With you?” It was quite obvious to Tori that the god was not pleased with
the situation he found her in upon his return.
“Nothing. He came to get me. But I told him I wouldn’t go.
My place is here, with you, my Lord,” she responded casually. She noticed he still looked pissed off, so
she added, “You doubt my willingness to serve you, Master?” She knelt down in front of him, her hands
moved over the tight leather pants covering his muscular thighs and she licked
her lips. Ares grabbed her by the
shoulders and brought her back to her feet again.
“Not now,” he snapped.
“We’ve got more important things to handle at the moment. Let’s go over this plan once more. I want to make sure we are clear about
everything. If there is any doubt in
his mind that this is not real, then he may not show up when the portal is
opened.”
“And the other? He agreed to help us?”
Ares nodded his
confirmation.
“Great! Okay, let’s go over it again,” she agreed.
