Chapter Nine
It was in the early hours that the laptops had finished their diagnostic and made a quiet electronic noise and Kristien looked up from the floor of the hangar where Hawke had the matress. She had got used to the necessity of sleeping right next to Airwolf. Hawke had his arm around her as always did before five years previous and she lay with her head on his chest.
She gently moved away from him and put on his shirt that he had worn before going on the mission to Afghanistan. She stood up and walked over to the laptop and wanted to investigate which one was making the noise. She only had time to do up a couple of buttons when she looked at one of the screens quite concerned. She typed in a few commands.
Hawke stirred from his sleep and noting that Kristien was not there he sat up, he could see her at the laptops. He knew she liked to be busy but damn, come on she needed to rest a little too.
Hawke walked up behind Kristien and stood behind her. “You understand all these numbers and stuff?” He asked her putting his hands on her shoulders.
Kristien laid her head towards one of his hands rubbing her cheek feeling the warmth. “Sure do and here it is again.” Kristien pointed to the screen. “I don’t understand it.”
“What is that then?” Hawke asked her as he allowed his other hand to explore inside his shirt that Kristien was wearing.
“It’s some machine code that should not be there, but I cannot find where or how it got here.” Kristien told him, breathing deeply, trying hard not to be distracted by Hawke’s hand.
“You mean all this stuff that Archangel handed over has been tainted somehow?” Hawke started to get concerned and froze. He moved his hand from her shoulder and he knelt down beside her to get a better view of the screen, not that he could understand for one moment what all the commands meant. He left his other hand inside the shirt.
“No, it was here beforehand but I cannot remember this as part of Moffet’s original programming.” Kristien admitted to Hawke.
“It is over 6 years ago you worked with Moffet.” Hawke tried to give Kristien an excuse for maybe forgetting something and he looked at her.
“Actually 8 years if you count when I first came into the project.” Kristien knew what he was up to and she turned to face him. “And I have perfect memory recall of all the blue prints and every piece of machine code for Airwolf.” Kristien confirmed to him. “Someone has had access to Airwolf.”
Hawke felt fear deep inside of him. No one had had access to Airwolf. The Lair was secure with an alarm system if anyone entered in from the ground entrance, but if someone came down through the ‘chimney’ the entrance used for Airwolf then he would not know if anyone had got to Airwolf.
“Can you remove it?” Hawke asked her.
Kristien looked at him. “Of course I can, that’s easy, but surely you want to know who got into your bat cave and fiddled with Airwolf?” Kristien asked. “They may fiddle today but what if tomorrow they take Airwolf?”
“No one can fly her except you, me, Dom and now Cait.” Hawke reminded her. “Everyone else is dead.” Hawke remembered Robert Winchester and Harlen Jenkins possibly the two other pilots that had flown Airwolf before.
“String who ever put this in, knows Airwolf.” Kristien told him. “I hate to say it but you need to be talking to Archangel on this.”
“No way.” Hawke stood up and left Kristien and started to put on his Airwolf flight suit. Kristien brought up her knees on the chair, she was getting cold.
“String, someone has penetrated your defences and you won’t even acknowledge it.” Kristien was trying to understand Hawke’s reluctance in calling for help. Hawke looked at her and stopped putting on the flight suit, leaving it round his waist. He looked over at Kristien, he knew she was right but he did not trust Archangel nor Carsten.
“I won’t have Archangel anywhere near Airwolf.” Hawke told her. “I would rather fly out right now.”
“Okay, I will put it another way.” Kristien started to theorise. “What happens if next time you have a missile on your arse that Airwolf’s CPU takes over, disengages the rotors, kicks on the turbos quite happily lands Airwolf delivered and gift wrapped to the person who put this machine code inside of her.”
Hawke looked directly at Kristien. “Can someone do that?”
“I could do it right now, it would take maybe 30 minutes for me to program it, I could use a 148 bit encryption and drop it in as a worm, so no one could actually see it regardless of who had access to Airwolf.” Kristien continued to theorise. “You would not need to actually know how to fly a helicopter using a computer and Airwolf’s autopilot to steal it.”
Hawke remembered when Moffet had left a logic bomb inside of Airwolf’s CPU, Airwolf had flown itself and had engaged combat mode on several occassions. He knew it was possible. Although he had a Masters Degree in Physics when I came to Computers, Hawke was completely out of his depth.
Hawke calmed down and he felt the coolness of the hangar, he looked at Kristien and felt how cold she was getting. He picked up one of the blankets on the bed next to Airwolf and walked round to Kristien, wrapping her in the blanket. He knelt down infront of her. “Best you call Archangel and tell him what you have just told me.” Hawke knew she was right as asking for help. “Can you make sure that who ever has done this won’t fly Airwolf out.”
“Airwolf is safe here, the estate matrix has a jamming programme, so anyone trying to hack in can’t, same for Airwolf trying to send any information out.” Kristien told him. “That’s why when you were out I kept getting an ‘echo’ like on a long distance phone call, but with a computer that should not happen. Airwolf was sending information out.”
“Well we had better find out who and quickly. I don’t want to go to the lair to find out Airwolf has taken off by itself.” Hawke told her. “I don’t like the idea of anyone hacking in and taking control of the computer.”
Kristien smiled knowing that she had managed to calm Hawke down. He looked up at her. He wrapped his arms around her, giving her his body heat, damn she had got cold and quickly too. Noting how cold she was he picked her up and took her back to the matress and laid her down. He laid down next to her and they held each other tightly.
