(Lessala sits at her desk, handing paperwork to one of the SID minions as she talks on a wireless phone. One of the large phones of the 80's that looks like a walkie-talkie.)
Lessala: So, how's the hunt for wild Little People going?
(Cut to a forest. Vertag sits on the open tailgate of a truck with another large phone.)
Vertag: Depends on how you measure success. No one's been lost, hurt or eaten by a carnivorous plant. But no one's found any ferals.
Lessala: (voice) I thought they didn't like you to call them that?
Vertag: Well, Perez isn't here, Janet and Styles are out in the brush, the others are too afraid of me to tell on me. (He smiles down toward the ground. Camera shifts to a view of a human camp beside the truck. A few Marines look up at Vertag, shake their heads and go about their business.)
Lessala: (voice) Sure they are. You've got them terrified, quaking in their boots.
Vertag: Sure do. Every day, I make sure they know that I know where my frying pan is.
(back to Lessala, close up on her face)
Lessala: I'm sure they see you as a horrible tyrant. (softer, lower) When are you coming home?
Vertag: (voice, softer lower) Soon.
Lessala: How soon?
(Back to Vertag)
Vertag: Well, I've pretty much decided there aren't any wild Little People here. But Janet found some ruins that give her hope. We've agreed to let Styles decide when enough is enough. And she's very nearly there.
(cut to deep in the forest somewhere. A squad of Marines marches through the undergrowth. Styles and Janet are in the middle)
Styles: No, Janet, I agree with Vertag. There may have been humans here, many years ago, but they left.
Janet: You can't be sure of that!
Styles: Sure enough.
Janet: A couple more days? That's all I'm asking.
Styles: That's what you said a couple of days ago. Unless one of the sweeper teams finds something today, I'm going to let Vertag pack everything up and head for home.
Janet: (sighs) All right.
(Cut to another Marine unit. They're climbing over tree roots. As they reach the flat ground under the root complex, a light flashes in a hollow beneath the three. The Marines go on alert. The LT starts gesturing for men and women to approach the hollow. They move stealthily forward.)
(Just as the lead Marine is about to duck inside, a human walks out. A young woman wearing a giant-made smock (big stitches, huge fabric weave), boots, and carrying a large, unwieldy camera. Her long hair is done up in huge pigtails, tied in place with giant-sized ribbons. She stops suddenly, seeing all the weapons pointed at her.)
Gessy: Are you ferals? I'm not supposed to talk to ferals.

(Gessy sits in the back of a Hummer, eyes wide as she examines the vehicle. She avoids looking at the Marines in the other seats. Except for the driver, they stare at her.)
Gessy: Deckett owns the camera. You have to give him back the camera. And me.
Marine1 (back seat beside Gessy): We will give him back his camera, miss. We just want you to meet our boss.
Gessy: Are you going to make me run away?
Marine2 (front passenger): Don't you want to run away?
Gessy: Yeah…from you guys.
Marine3 (driving): But we're your friends.
Gessy: Deckett says friends take no for an answer. You wouldn't let me say no to this ride.
Marine1: Gessy, we… Well, maybe Miss Crane can explain it better.
(Vertag is stirring a pot over a small campfire as the Hummer races into the camp, honking its horn. He turns as they pull up beside him. Gessy looks out the door and smiles. She opens the door and runs towards him.)
Gessy: You guys have a giant!
(Vertag holds out his hand as she runs to it)
Marine3: A human that runs from humans…TO a giant?
Marine2: That's messed up, man.
(Vertag lifts Gessy up to his face. She smiles happily)
Gessy: My name is Gessy, I belong to Naturalist Scholar Deckett, and we live at 1645 Manfire Thoroughfare, apartment 3G.
Vertag: Well, it's very nice to meet you, Gessy. My name is Vertag. Is Scholar Deckett around somewhere?
Gessy: Yes, sir. He's taking pictures. Like I was. He's an illustrator for science books. I was looking for field mouse nests when…
(she glances down at the Marines near his feet)
Gessy: When they found me.
Vertag: And they asked you to come with them to see me.
Gessy: I guess so. They said I had to come here. I thought… I thought they were going to…
Vertag: Oooh, shush, shush. No. I can tell you that right now. They would not hurt you. Not ever. They're what is called 'Marines.' They exist to protect you, not hurt you.
(Janet's group drives into camp. Styles and Janet walk over to the group that brought in Gessy.)
Styles: What's going on?
Marine2: Found a crazy woman, Lieutenant. She prefers giant company to humans.
(Up at Vertag's face)
Gessy: They pointed guns at me! I came up after taking the pictures and they were all pointing guns at me!
Vertag: Well, you surprised them. They're out there in the forest, expecting wild animals. They probably thought you were a bear.
(Down at his feet)
Marine1: Plus, the giant's gone loopy.
(Up at Vertag's face)
Gessy: A bear? There aren't any bears in this forest. They're miles and miles and miles and miles and miles away.
Vertag: I know that. And you know that. But they're from Earth and they don't know that. So, you probably scared them. That's why they pointed guns at you.
Gessy: Me? Scare ferals?
Vertag: Yep. You should probably apologize to the Marines for scaring them bad enough to aim weapons at a harmless little girl like you.
(down at his feet)
Marine1: (whisper) Is he really suggesting that we say we were scared of her?
Styles:(whisper) He's seen us fight, Noonan. He knows what happened. If he wants you to pretend you were scared, it's for a reason.
Janet: (loudly) Vertag! Who's your friend?
Vertag: Janet! I want you to meet Gessy. She's a domestic. I really thought all the First Nation domestics had been collected and turned over to the Exchange.
Gessy: We've been traveling a lot.
Vertag: Isn't that interesting. Here, Gessy, I want you to meet Janet Crane. (he lowers Gessy to the ground. She steps out carefully, backing towards Vertag's feet when his hand rises.)
Janet: Gessy. It's nice to meet you.
Styles: I'm sorry if there was a misunderstanding with the squad, Gessy. It'll never happen again. (she elbows the officer of the other squad.)
Marine1: Right! Um. We. Well, we're sorry we scared you, but, uh, you did…. Startle us. We thought. You might have been. (above Gessy's head, Vertag pantomimes chomping teeth and claws) A, uh, rabid squirrel. After our nuts.
Gessy: (giggles) Oh. Oh, well, that's okay. Deckett says fear is good, it keeps you alive. As long as you don't let it keep you from living.
Marine3: Sounds like Deckett's got it right.
Marine2: Did you just compliment a giant?
Marine1: Sounds like it.
Marine3: No…no, I just agreed with his outlook on this particular element of philosophy.
Marine2: Yep. Compliment.
Marine3: I gotta get off this planet…
Janet: Gessy, what are you doing out here?
Gessy: My owner-
(Reaction shots of all humans wincing or looking askance at her claim of being owned)
Gessy: He illustrates books. He's writing a big book of illustrations right now so we're going all over the forests to find things that someone may want to write about some day so that we have an illustration on file so we can sell it to them in the future.
Janet: Uh huh. Your giant…owns you?
Gessy: (pauses, pouts) You're going to be mean.
Janet: Mean? No, Gessy, never.
Marine2: Might put a hurt on your giant, though.
Gessy: No! (dismay shows)
(Vertag reaches down for Gessy. Janet moves towards the girl while Styles spins on her Marines. She glares and dismisses them with a gesture. They shrug and move off.)
(Vertag lifts Janet, Gessy and Styles to the tailgate of his truck. He moves a folding chair near so that the gate is nearly a table for him)
Vertag: Gessy, no one here is going to hurt Deckett.
Gessy: Promise?
Vertag: I promise.
Gessy: Do they promise?
Styles: Yes.
Janet: Of course.
(Gessy glances at them but looks up at Vertag)
Vertag: You can trust their promises, Gessy.
Gessy: Well, okay.
Janet: Gessy? Why do you trust Vertag more than you trust us?
Gessy: (serious look as she thinks for a moment) Well, honestly, I've never heard of a feral giant…
Styles: You trust all giants?
Gessy: Well…all the ones I know. It's not like I run into any nasty SID agents, of course.
Styles: No. Of course not.
Janet: Gessy, we're taking all the Earthlings we can find back to Earth.
Gessy: Great! I know most of them aren't happy here.
Janet: But you're one of the people we want to take back.
Gessy: But I've never been to Earth. I was born here. I like it here. I like Deckett. I… I love Deckett.
Styles: You can't.
Vertag: She certainly can. She probably does. He's raised her and protected her nearly from birth.
Styles: He's treated her like a pet!
Vertag: Which is better than being attacked by rats in an alley. Or carrying drugs for a giant. Maybe having a pet spider under the canned goods in a market would be preferable?
Styles: Rrrrrrgh!
Vertag: Janet, I'm going to go out looking for Deckett. While-
Styles: Our orbital surveillance can probably-
Vertag: While I'm out looking for Deckett, maybe you can take Gessy and get her some human food? She might enjoy a room full of people her size.
Gessy: Can't I come with you?
Vertag: Sorry. Rules.
Gessy: Okay. Where do we go?
Vertag: First, did someone mention a camera?
(Gessy sits at a folding table in front of a tent. Styles sits beside her at the table, describe the contents of the prepacked meal. Other Marines watch from a distance. Two sit on the hood of a Hummer and watch)
Marine4: All I'm saying, someone raised as a pet isn't going to do well in modern society back home.
Marine5: So you want to marry her. To protect her from people that will take advantage of her.
Marine4: Exactly.
Marine5: Wouldn't that mean you were taking advantage of her?
Marine4: What? No, no. I only want to help her.
Marine5: Tell you what. You get Miss Crane on board with this idea, then you ask Gessy for her hand in marriage.
Marine4: Uh…. Is she still carrying that grenade launcher?
(back to the table)
Gessy: I like the chicken. We have chicken here.
Styles: Yes, but the chicken this came off of is about this big.
Gessy: Really?
Styles: Really. Would you like to see one?
Gessy: (puts her fork down) I can't go home, can I?
Styles: Not to what you think of as home, no.
Gessy: Why not!? Deckett and I aren't hurting anyone! He loves me! I love him!
Styles: The government won't let him, Gessy. Sooner or later, they're going to want to turn you over to Earth to get some more technology. And they won't take no for an answer. If you go now, at least he'll get some money.
Gessy: This is why we're out here, I guess. He's hiding. Keeping me for as long as possible.
Styles: You think so?
Gessy: Yeah. We've got enough images to make three books by now. He just keeps finding another place to go take more pictures. He hasn't been home. He won't collect mail. He doesn't…. He doesn't want the money. He wants me.
Styles: I believe you. But I don't think they'll care.
Gessy: Lousy SID. If they ever catch us, they'll probably beat Deckett up.
Styles: I'm not sure about that.
Gessy: They will. They're meanies.
(In the forest, Vertag sits on a fallen log. He waits patiently. After a moment, there's a muffled beeping sound from his pocket. He pulls out what looks like an evidence bag. Inside the plastic is Gessy's camera, the source of the noise)
Deckett: (out of view) Gessy! Where are you, girl? And how did you ever manage to get out of range for so long? I thought I'd never find you.
(Deckett, a middle-aged but fit giant, walks into view. He's got a huge pack on his back. Pack, clothes and giant are all well-traveled. Bordering on beat-all-to-hell. Dusty with streaks of mud and green stains from extended forest and jungle travel. He's carrying a bulky box of electronics that beeps to match the camera)
Deckett: I swear, I thought you were going as fast as a car. Did you fall in a river or some- (he pauses as he sees Vertag. The agent pulls out a wallet and shows his badge) Oh, crap.
Vertag: (patting the log) Vertag. SID. Special attachment to The Exchange. Have a seat, Naturalist Scholar Deckett, of 1645 Manfire Thoroughfare, apartment 3G.
Deckett: (sighs) So, she's alive? (sits)
Vertag: Alive and safe.
Deckett: And being kidnapped to Earth.
Vertag: I can do it now, or wait for my bosses to tell me to hunt you down and take her.
Deckett: That'd suck.
Vertag: Yep.
Deckett: I just…I've known her all her life.
Vertag: Yeah, she seems well cared-for. Loved.
Deckett: I've taken good care for her. And, well, I've tried to keep her interested. Active. Useful. Not just a…
Vertag: Pet.
Deckett: Yeah.
Vertag: Well, if SID has to track her down, you or she could get hurt. Also, at this point, I think we'd have to step on some of the humans to pry her loose.
Deckett: I couldn’t do that. Gessy would never forgive me for hurting an Earthling. Even a feral one.
Vertag: So, you're going to cooperate with the Exchange.
Deckett: (sighs) Yeah.
Vertag: We won't tell her.
Deckett: What?
Vertag: I'm SID. I can compel you. Against your will. She'll never, ever feel that you gave her up for the money. As long as she lives, she'll know that you were forced into giving her up.
Deckett: I am being forced.
Vertag: Yeah, but we'll make sure it's demonstrated explicitly. So, pitch a fit when I allow you to say your goodbyes.. Take a swing at me, if you want. Then you'll be escorted away.
Deckett: (stares) Why?
Vertag: Most of the Earthlings on Earth dislike us in general and hate SID in particular. Right now, there are maybe a hundred humans on this planet that find me barely tolerable. I'd… Well, I'd feel better if Gessy, at least, was one person on Earth that liked at least one of us. I don't know if it'll ever come in useful, but I'd like to think it was right.
Deckett: I'd… I'd like that, Agent Vertag.
Vertag: Me, too. (stands) You ready to tell her goodbye?
Deckett: (stands) Yeah. I guess.
Vertag: (points) About fifty tekk that way, cross a stream. Camp's right ahead. You talk to her for a bit, then I come into camp and chase you off.
Deckett: Thanks. (walks off)
(Vertag loiters by the log for a minute or two, glancing at his watch. Then he starts looking around the underbrush)
Vertag: Are you there, Janet?
Janet: (stepping out from behind a tree) How did you know?
Vertag: You are not stealthy in the woods. (reaches down to pick her up. Starts walking to camp) Is she going to be okay?
Janet: Yeah. It's, uh… It's nice. What you're doing for her. For them.
Vertag: Eh, it's easy enough to do.
Janet: She's going to hate you, though.
Vertag: I'm SID. Everyone hates SID.
Janet: (strokes his hand beneath her) Not everyone.
(Cut to Vertag's office. Vertag sits at his desk, reading a report. A caption reads: Three months later. Janet steps out of the elevator and walks onto his desk)
Janet: If I give you a letter, would you give it to the person it's addressed to?
Vertag: (without looking up) I'm not committing to anything without knowing who it's from or to and the contents.
Janet: It's a private letter! And it's not to you!
Vertag: (turns to her) You do remember I'm a secret policeman, right?
Janet: Alright, alright. If you remember Gessy? She's reached Earth. Wants her giant-
Vertag: Naturalist Scholar Deckett.
Janet: Right, to know that she's okay.
Vertag: How okay is she?
Janet: Well, one of the Spindrift's passengers, Valerie Scott? She's set up a protective settlement for former domesticated humans. Gessy says she really likes it there. Lots of people that don't demand that she starts to hate the giants.
Vertag: Great. If someone could read the letter to Lessala, she'll type it up and mail it.
Janet: Then he'll know we read it!
Vertag: He already knows we read it, Janet, trust me.
Janet: Oh. Yeah. (turns to walk to the elevator)
Vertag: Does she mention me at all?
Janet: She hopes you burn in the deepest fires of the darkest Hell for one day short of eternity, then travel in time to the beginning of everything, and do it all over again.
Vertag: (nods) But she still loves Deckett. Good. (goes back to the report)
Janet: (stares at the stoic giant for a moment) Yeah. Good.
