Disclaimer: I do not own the Land of the Giants show, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
(Open to a shot of the Washington monument, establishing that we're in DC. A few other shots of the Mall, then the front of the Smithsonian Castle, with caption. Then another building, captioned 'The Smithsonian Museum of World History' (which doesn't exist, so maybe the caption should include 'established 2015? Or maybe not enough people will know there's no such Museum, yet, so it doesn't matter?))
(Cut to an office inside the World History Museum. The size of a conference room, tables and wall charts and desks are rather haphazardly arranged, all covered with academic references, pictures, giant-sized tarrat cards, maps, globes, an autographed picture of Lessala leaning on one wall, and white-boards covered with arcane symbols. (one indicating that in case you were not in attendance on that day, Mr. Kilroy has been in the building.))
(A man and a woman shift tarrat cards (human sized) around on a table)
Professor: I'm beginning to wonder if the symbols are not important to the issue of finding the Order.
Doctor: We've been over this. If they're not important, then what is?
Professor: I... I dunno. The computers aren't having a lot of luck with them. If they're an alphabet, we don't have the key. If they're ideograms, we don't have the language. If they're map coordinates we-
Doctor: We don't have anything. Except these cards and the book.
Professor: Yeah. Everything a giant would need to find- (he pauses)
Doctor: What?
Professor: (gets up and walks to one of the reproduction cards on the wall, at giant scale) Do you watch Charity's reports on the mission?
Doctor: Everyone on the planet does. Why?
Professor: (running his hand over the drawings) You remember that thug, Tettskin? What he and Perez said about working together to defeat that scary, scary giant?
Doctor: Tettskin is a scary giant. (holds a hand up as Professor turns to explain) I know the one you're talking about. Next to Tettskin, that one was an ogre. Yeah, teamwork between the scales defeated him, his security systems and his assumptions about the gap between humans and giants.
Professor: Yeah. Well, what if the key to this map was the same thing. What if there are details on the giants' cards that only a human could use?
Doctor: (getting up to join the Prof) Are there?
Professor: These...
(Close up of the card. Under the Prof's finger is an irregular shape, kind of like a cartoon hand, or a mutated club symbol from the average casino deck)
Doctor: That's just a splotch. Something from the printing process.
Professor: Is it? There's an identical 'splotch' right here.
Doctor: There is... What does it mean?
Professor: Dunno. Get everyone in here. Search every card. Start with the one's Crane identified as significant.
(Doctor pulls out their phone and starts punching buttons. Professor leans another card against the wall and starts looking it over)

Roll Titles
-----
(Open in an anchor studio for a TV news program. The usual matched set of anchors sits on either side of a counter, one male and one female)
Male: ....and today in Congress, the giant planet was a subject of some debate. (in the background, a picture of a human in a giant cage is displayed)
Female: A Senate subcommittee is preparing to establish the US position on the so-called collaborators among those rescued from giant custody.
Male: As part of creating that position, the committee has been collecting testimony on the general situation. Those rescued, those that escaped and many of the military personnel who directly witnessed conditions on the planet.
Female: Our Jarray Khassim has a report from the Senate.
(Cut to Jarray on the steps of Congress)
Jarray: Emotions have been running high during Senate hearings on how they should vote in the World Court. The US influence on how people who cooperated with their captors are tried, or if they even should be tried, seems to bring out extreme responses from both sides.
(Cut to a shot of protesting mob filling the streets. Signs indicate a general wish for anyone who willfully wore a collar to be shot like a dog. Bible verses supporting vengeance are also prominent.)
Jarray: (voice) The voices of the several self-proclaimed anti-giant groups were clear. Never forget, never forgive.
(New shot of a similar mob, also waving signs. Forgive those who trespass on us, Bible verses of love, humans are the ones who are NOT the enemy, that sort of thing. Also some posters of Janet, some outlined in big red hearts.)
Jarray: (voice) But there are those who think that human-on-human revenge misses the target. And while there are some pro-giant groups, none are speaking out on this topic.
Jarray: (on the steps) But the real surprise was the direct testimony of one Gregory Foster.
(shot of Foster being led to a table before the subcommittee.)
Jarray: (voice) Foster, an outspoken critic of the giants, is a former captive. He was one of the first humans rescued...
(cut to a photo of Foster being led out of the transfer cage on the day the Marines arrived on the planet, episode 1-4. Teary eyed, wearing the overalls, arms around his wife)
Jarray: (voice) ...by the Coastal City exchange. He is perhaps most famous for his TV show, Vernon, PI. The sitcom lampoons giants, the giant government, the current technology-for-humans exchange and very specifically attacks...
(cut to a posed photo of Vertag holding Janet in his palm, both smiling for the camera. Or, Janet smiles, Vertag smiles as much as he does when commanded to do so)
Jarray: (voice) Agent Vertag and Liaison Janet Crane, the very team that rescued him. Unconfirmed rumors from the Marines state that he even sliced one of Vertag's fingers off while trying to decapitate Crane.
Jarray: (on steps) No one expected to be surprised about his stance on anyone that cooperated with forces he has termed 'insidious evil' on many occasions. However...
(Cut to the Senate, during Foster's testimony.)
Foster: Frankly, Senator, I don't think it's possible for anyone who has never been to that planet to fully grasp the choices these people faced. Even the most abused prisoner in the worst gulag, concentration camp, inquisitional torture or castle dungeon only faced humans.
Jarray: (Foster's image stills, Jarray voices over) He pleaded the case for maximum leniency in general, and generous judgments on a case by case business.
Foster: I'm not saying general amnesty or forgive and forget, sir. I'm saying that until you've been picked up and held by someone, like you were a mouse, or an insect, and had your family threatened by someone that can literally tear them apart....(pauses for an emotional moment) Well, sir, you just don't have a good idea of where their minds were at when they decided to cooperate.
Senator: But some of these people had no such hostages to preserve.
Foster: And what would you have had them do? Until Burton got the Spindrift back, no one knew the planet existed. Three years ago, I was in a cage. I had no hope that the giant government would be overthrown, or that the US Embassy would learn where I was or that US Marines would show up and... We were on our own.
Senator: So what would you do with Billy Anderson?
Foster: The guy that shot Crane? (looks confused) Didn't he die, resisting the Marines?
Senator: Like him. Someone LIKE him. What would you do?
Foster: As I said, Senator, I'm not asking for sweeping amnesty. I'm just cautioning against sweeping condemnation. Billy Anderson and Doctor Hasan had very different circumstances, and made very different, very difficult choices. Our evaluation of them shouldn't be the same.
Jarray: (in the chamber, now empty) Liaison Janet Crane submitted a recorded message for the committee. The general thrust of her appeal was that we should be looking to heal, not avenge.
(back in the studio)
Male: I understand that wasn't the only recorded message seen today.
Jarray: (in the chamber) No it was not. Charity Tomms, whose show, "Small Charity," can be seen on this network on Sunday nights at eight, submitted an interview with Vertag made expressly for this subcommittee.
(Cut to a view of Vertag. The giant sits at his desk in his office. A transfer cage is on the desk, with Styles inside it. The point of view is relatively close, so the giant hulks in the view, trying to relate just how freaking big he really is. He waves his hands over the cage, as if describing something, and his mouth moves while Jarray speaks.)
Jarray: (voice) The agent quite frankly discussed the SID methods of getting information from and forcing compliance from Little People, or us Earthlings.
Vertag: No, we almost never use restraints to tie the Little People down. Why would we? Once they're in the cage, there's no place they can go. (Close up of Styles shaking the cage door) And any time I want access to her, I just
(He grabs the handle and tilts the cage. Styles is thrown down to the floor. He pops the door and reaches in, snatching her up before she gets back on her feet. She twists and kicks in his grip but she's clearly going nowhere.)
Vertag: Now I can put her in or on or under anything that appeals to me. (Jarray talks as Vertag is shown manhandling Styles with impunity, her in his absolute control)
Jarray: (Voice) Many analysts who viewed the proceedings felt that Vertag's matter-of-fact disclosure had a great impact on all who watched it.
Jarray: (in the chamber) The SID agent did not say whether or not he'd ever used any of these techniques on a human, but he was clearly familiar with SID's arsenal for coercing the Little People.
(Cut to Vertag. The cage is off the desk, there's a cardboard box.)
Vertag: ...and by the time the agent brings the box back out of the fridge, the Earthling is usually ready to talk. (he reaches down and lifts Styles out of the box. Her feet are bare and her uniform shirt is removed, leaving her in a tank top.)
Charity: (voice) What do you think, Lieutenant? Would you talk after something like that?
Styles: Are you kidding? I LIKE this giant, and I'm about ready to [bleep] my pants!
Vertag: The guys at headquarters call that a notch. Whoever has the most notches at the end of the week doesn't have to buy his drinks.
Styles: Oh, god....
Vertag: Now, if there's no fridge at the office, there's always a coffee maker. And something the interrogators like to call Honesty Soup.
Charity: (voice) And how does that work?
Styles: (stressed) Very well, I'm sure. I'm convinced. Really. (she kicks in his grip, nothing changes. He sweeps the box off the desk and picks up a glass coffee pot. It's empty. He places it on the desk.)
Vertag: Now, the way they play this game, it usually takes two Little People. (he reaches off camera and comes back with one of the technical people of Charity's show. He drops a clipboard and fights, predictable results)
Charity: (voice) Agent Vertag, we didn't agree to using my associate producer in the demonstration.
Vertag: That's kind of the point, Miss Tomms. I picked him. What are you going to do about it?
Charity: (voice) I could call the Marines.
Styles: Right here, miss. Can I help you? (she slaps Vertag who does not even flinch)
Charity: I, uh, I see.
Larry: I sodding well do NOT!
Vertag: HUSH! (Larry quiets with fear) Now, they usually put the person they need the least in the pot. (Larry is lowered gently to the bottom, visible through the glass. He scrambles away from directly beneath the opening, cowering against the glass.)
Styles: I really want a flamethrower right now.
Vertag: So, they put the pot in the coffee maker and start asking questions.
Larry: TELL HIM WHAT HE WANTS TO KNOW!
Styles: I WILL!
Jarray: (in chamber) No humans were harmed during the demonstrations, but... Well, they certainly made their point clear.
(Back in the studio, Male and Female are clearly shaken)
Male: Um...wow.
Female: Earlier, he said that there were three hours of testimony from Vertag.
Male: Ugh. Three hours of playing torture dollhouse. Now, was that Sergeant Styles he was...playing with?
Female: She was promoted to Second Lieutenant.
Male: Oh, yes. I remember now. Well, later on-
Female: Just a second. We're getting a signal. Yes, a member of the subcommittee we were just talking about is giving a press conference about today's testimony. We go live to Senator Wilberforce on Capitol Hill.
(Press room, full of press reps, Wilberforce is already speaking)
Wilberforce: And I find it a disgrace that Senator Diggs allowed testimony from a giant on this issue.
Reporter: Senator, do you think his testimony was not factual?
Wilberforce: I question its usefulness. Clearly, this man....this giant hates humans. His only motivation would be to have us treat his stooges lightly.
Reporter: Senator Wilberforce, Agent Vertag's actions on behalf of many humans are part of the historical record of the Exchange. How can you be sure he hates humans?
Wilberforce: He's a GIANT! They all hate us!
Reporter: So...his positive actions? How do you explain those?
Wilberforce: THIS would be the explanation! He's been setting us up! He wants us to like him, to trust him, to take pity on the traitors he and his people have recruited. And they'll go on advancing the giant agenda once we free them.
Reporter: Senator, Janet Crane has probably worked with Agent Vertag more than anyone. And she sometimes refers to him as 'that miserable bastard in the front office.' If he's working so hard to be a friend, why is his closest associate angry with him so often?
Wilberforce: Well, Miss Crane is apparently smarter than Senator Diggs.
Reporter: Sir, what do you think we should be doing with the collaborators?
Wilberforce: I think anyone that's been in giant custody should be treated with suspicion. There's no telling if they've been brainwashed or turned or made into some weapon that's aimed at our way of life.
Reporter: Our 'way of life?
Wilberforce: Yes! If nothing so obvious as spying or saboteurs, they may still have been coerced into accepting some sort of giant lifestyle as their own. Something the big monsters find amusing or appropriate or even treat as natural in their own, perverse society.
Reporter: You... Sir, are you saying you think the giants may have made their prisoners gay?
Wilberforce: What- NO! These people have been pets! Slaves! Laboratory rats! Let them loose among the populace, we're going to be wearing collars!
Reporter: So...that's a yes on the gay thing.
Wilberforce: This has nothing to do with the homosexual agenda! This has to do with the suspicious two week delays of turning captured humans over to Earth forces. What were they doing during that time?
Reporter: Senator, the human rescuees were kept in a glass structure with constant surveillance. The permanent record shows that the giants did nothing but provide food, clothing, shelter and break up fights. Where do you see that they had a chance to brainwash anyone?
Wilberforce: They kept them! Clearly, they had a reason to-
Voice: You IDIOT! (Camera sweeps to find Sandy standing in the back of the press room) Do you NEVER pay attention to the real world?
(Two little windows open up in the corner of the screen. The anchors show up in each one. Sandy stalks to the front of the press corps who makes room for them)
Male: That's Sandy O'Neill, leader of the Giant Rescue organization known simply as the Family.
Female: She and many Family members are here to testify before the same subcommittee.
Male: Looks like she and the senator are going to start a little early.
Female: Yeah, let's-
Sandy: You really think Vertag has evil intentions for this planet?
Wilberforce: There's no proof he hasn't!
Sandy: There sure as hell is! ME!
Wilberforce: I'm sure you and your family are very grateful for the rescue and feel strongly that-
Sandy: [bleep] feelings! I have the scientific and technological know-how that the giants would literally kill to possess. That man-
Wilberforce: That giant.
Sandy: That person with honor, compassion and a solid steel core let me escape his planet without even asking me one question about the tech. It makes no sense that he would release me, but try a less likely method to gain intel or some other benefit for the giants.
Wilberforce: Well, he was in human company the entire time. Under surveillance as it were.
Sandy: So, which is it? He's so good at Byzantine plans that he could slip mass brainwashing in under our noses or he's incompetent to fool a handful of humans long enough to fake my death and deliver me to his superiors? You can't really have it both ways?
Wilberforce: Miss O'Neill, I'd rather point out that you may not be the best person to evaluate an SID giant's motives.
Sandy: Why the hell not?
Wilberforce: I'm just saying, you spent time in...(significant pause)...in a young man's bedroom. It's possible your experiences in the captivity of a boy going through puberty (another significant pause, a small leer)...
Sandy: Oh, grow up.
Wilberforce: So you can see where-
(A figure dashes across the screen and tackles the Senator.)
Attacker: BURN IN HELL, you PRICK!
( Press rushes forward to see who's slugging who, security rushes forward to the fight, then the apparent stampede of cameras distracts them. Reporters strive to be in the front row, including the camera we're watching through. A case of some kind rises and comes towards our POV. Then static. Then we're back in the studio)
Male: (snarky) I see the formal debate has begun!
Female: Shut up. (to the camera) We'll bring you a full report of that...announcement later, once we can collect some footage.
Male: Or at least find our cameraman.
Female: Jeff's a former Marine. No giant experience, but he can hold his own in that crowd.
Male: Let's hope so. In other news, the usual exchange between the planets is that we give technology for something we want.
Female: But today, the Smithsonian Zoo revealed some giant technology that they've acquired.
(Cut to a shot of a T-Rex Pen. The fence is the same as the material used on Vertag's family farm to hold the dinosaurs. Beasts stalk around inside the pen, visitors look through the wires and slats to see. Someone in a suit talks to a reporter)
Reporter: Keeper Saint James, today you opened up an unusual exhibit. Can you tell us about it?
St. James: Oh, unusual is the word. First of all, it's the first zoo exhibit in the world to host an animal from an alien planet.
Reporter: The Tyrannosaurus Rex.
St. James: Yes. Apparently the same...what are they calling it now, a wormhole?
Reporter: That'll work.
St. James: The same wormhole that's been yanking ships out of orbit has touched the Earth's surface at least once. Way back when dinosaurs walked the Earth. These dinosaurs traveled to a place the Giants simply call The Wild Place, survived and thrived.
Reporter: And we got them from the giants.
St. James: Yes. We also got the fence.
(Cut to a few different views of the gigantic fence)
Reporter: Why did we get the fence?
St. James: Well, if you've seen the films of the giants catching snappers, you would recall that the things are quite capable of doing some major damage. So rather than risk any sort of trial-and-error system of dinosaur security, we asked the giants how they did it.
Reporter: And they offered us the technology?
St. James: They sold us the fence! The Army unit guarding the Capitol City Exchange arranged a delivery, loaded the shuttle and it was constructed here with almost no fuss.
Reporter: Well, you wouldn't expect any fuss, right? It's just a fence.
St. James: Actually, we're discovering that there are some interesting qualities to the fence.
Reporter: What do you mean?
St. James: Well, you know how everyone says the giants can't make atom bombs? Because the way critical masses work, the scale's too small for them to easily master the process. (Waves to the fence behind him) Well, apparently there are some unsuspected things you can do with metal when you're used to working with masses like this!
(Back to the studio)
Female: For full details on the new 'snapper' exhibit, check out our website. Press Station 203 on your remote.
Male: You can also access the Smithsonian report on giant metal fabrication.
Female: And our last story this hour, the giants have increased the number of slots available for the cancer cure.
Male: The announcement comes and yet another Exchange is closed down due to lack of humans remaining in giant custody. With another Exchange shut down, the Tank becomes available for other uses. (behind the two, a stock photo of the glass tower of a Tank is shown.)
Female: At maximum capacity, the Tanks have room for about one thousand occupants. Their main purpose has been for holding rescued Earthlings until they could be transferred to human custody, and ultimately back to Earth.
Male: The surplus ones have been redesigned to maximize their utility in supporting medical patients. The giants have been limiting the cancer treatment to twenty patients, tended by twelve medical staff, in each Tank. The limit is not based on the capacity of the Tank but on the number of possible cure samples that the giants can adequately prepare.
Female: The giants have just offered to increase the number of cure packages at each Tank to sixty, bringing the total number of patients to one hundred and twenty every week.
Male: World leaders are expected to negotiate the new technology exchange rate very swiftly.
Female: Or they'll be thrown out their office windows, I expect.
Male: Probably. (laughs, Female just glares) Oh. You were....serious.
Female: Damn skippy.
