There was a moment after Dean spoke that seemed to stretch on before anyone else said anything. "Whoa, wait, is this true?" Sam asked, wanting direct clarification from the accused women across from them.
"Well, yes. In a sense," Audrey said in a grave tone.
"Why didn't you say anything?" Sam asked in exasperation.
"You didn't ask and it's kind of hard to work in a conversation," she replied.
"So, what, you offer your cousin and those people up to that demon so you wouldn't have to sell your souls yourself, hm? Make a trade so you won't have to put yourself up on the slab?" Dean asked with a sneer.
"Dean!" Sam hissed at him, a little surprised that his brother would be almost cruel about it.
"We didn't do anything to our cousin orthose people! We didn't call that thing!" Audrey said angrily, narrowing her eyes at the older Winchester.
"Dean, why would they have tried to stop it if they summoned it?" Sam reasoned with him.
"Buyers remorse?" Dean offered with a shit-eatin' grin.
"You're about to buy yourself a good ass whoopin' if you don't watch your mouth."
Dean shot up off the couch and glaredat the blonde threatening him, to hell with not picking fights.
"You wanna go, Blondie? I'm right here."
Nicki shot up too and put herself dangerously close to Dean's personal space. "You couldn't handle me."
"I'm not above hittin' a girl." He warned.
"Same here, baby, so take your best shot." Nicki retorted, fiery blue eyes locking with brown, not backing down in the least.
"The both of you, sit down!" Audrey yelled, and the two looked at each other briefly before taking their seats again.
"Ass," Nicki hissed quietly, crossing her arms tightly.
"Bitch," Dean muttered back. Audrey turned her heated gaze towards him and Dean made it a point to shut his mouth.
"For your information, we were born this way. No one sold their soul to anyone. No one sacrificed a virgin or a goat or some other furry creature to be the way we are. We didn't ask for this. We can't help it any more than you can help notbeing this way. Believe me, we've tried. And the next time you want to be a bastard, you might want to stop and think about it when you're in our house." The auburn-haired woman said, her tone so flat and serious that it made Dean feel very bad and very nervous all at once.
"Look, we're sorry. It's just that…we thought that you were…."
"Normal." The ever cheerful voice of Cordelia announced her entrance into the room from the kitchen, carrying a silver tray cluttered with tea cups and a pot. "Well dear, no one ever really expects witches to be openly in their midst. Although the term 'witch' is a bit of misnomer given the circumstances. Corbin women have just always been blessed, blessed with the Art, intelligence, strength, good looks, strong willed," she added, eyeing the still-surly Nicki and the calm looking Audrey at the last one. The insinuation of 'stubborn' not lost on them. "Of course these blessing do come with their price. It's really a pity that people are so narrow minded to the world outside their own simple ones. We all could have gotten along famously. Sugar, dear? It's chamomile, by the way, good for the nerves." The older woman blindly smacked Nicki's hand as she reached for an empty cup. "Wait your turn young lady," she scolded, ignoring her small wail and pout at the reprimand.
"So, you all have…powers?" Sam asked, and Cordelia nodded.
"Mhm, every last one, passed from mothers to daughters for generations, twins especially. Right girls?"
"Right, Aunt C," the younger women chanted in unison in deadpan voices, a stark contrast to the older woman's cheer.
"You two are twins? Like twin-twins?" Dean asked, now genuinely curious.
"Yeah, what other kind of twins are there?" Audrey asked, arching her brow.
"You guys didn't know thateither? Wow, I'm a little embarrassed for you. That was an easy one."
"We were….kinda focused on the demon," Sam replied sheepishly, a little embarrassed that they had not, in fact, done their research on the family like they should have. He made a mental note to make that a top priority for the future.
"Now, children, there is no need to rude. The situation has not presented itself in the best way, but you all had the making of such good friends before now, why stop? You boys wouldn't be the first hunters to be friends of the family and your auras defiantly bring some interesting flow to the place." Cordelia said, dusting her hands slightly after having cleared the tray."Well, go on dears, drink up." She bade them farewell as she picked up the cleared tray and left the room.
The boys suddenly seemed to remember that they were holding china cups in their hands and looked at its contents carefully as if it would leap out and bite them. "Oh for God sakes." Nicki reached over the table, snatched Dean's cup from his hand, and took a big swig of the gold colored liquid before handing it back. "If we wanted to kill you, we wouldn't have wasted the bullets to try and save you. And considering we've known from the beginning you were hunters, do you really think that now we would try to kill you with poisoned tea? Give us some credit. If we wanted you dead, you would be."
Dean made a face at Nicolet's words, muttering to himself quietly before sipping his tea.
"Your aunt seems strangely informative," Sam offered as a way to break the awkwardness that permeated the room.
"She's proud of who we are. Both of themhave never tried to hide it," Audrey replied, taking a tentative sip of her own tea before setting it on the table.
"Really? 'Cause I sure as hell didn't see a sign or anything that said 'Beware of Witches' in your front yard."
"Dean," Sam hissed at his brother, but Dean ignored him.
"It's ok. He's not the first hunter to be suspicious of us. He won't be the last." Audrey said, taking her Aunt's advice and trying to be civil.
"Well, most of the witches we meet try to kill us, so forgive me if I'm not the greatest guest right now," Dean said sarcastically.
"Well, we'renot most witches. We don't hurt people, or conjure demons, or, my personal favorite, use our freaky mind powers on people to do our bidding and make them dance like puppets." The boys snickered at that one and both coughed to try and mask it. "There's a big gray area that most of you hunters seem to miss. There's always an exception to the rule that proves it."
"We're tricky, tricky white girls like that," Nicki added.
"Well, since you're such a tricky white girl, would you mind telling me how the hellyou found the damn thing andknew what to do just in time to be oh-so-heroicif you're notthe one that summoned it?" Dean asked, lacing his fingers and leaning back in his chair.
"You know you really might want to lose the attitude a little, because I'm still just about thisclose to punchin' you in the face." Nicki told him, holding her thumb and index finger a short distance apart, to which Dean held up his hand in a challenge. Nicki scoffed at him and rolled her eyes, answering his query. "Well, you takin' off randomly after accusing me of being a demon was kinda a hint. And I could feel it."
"Feel it? That sounds a little kinky."
Sam gave his brother a Look out of the corner of his eyes that silently said 'really?'
"Um, perv, I mean senseit. As for the know-how, it's kinda something you want when you're like us and know about the things that go bump in the night. We're not pros, but we have occasionally taken the liberty of taking care of some nasty things that come this way. For funsies," Nicki said with a shrug.
"You think this is fun?" Dean asked skeptically.
"Well, not in the sense that 'wee, this is fun, let's do it again.' But more in the 'that was great, let's never do that again if we can.'"
Dean chuckled a little at that one and Nicki smirked.
"So can both of you sense demonic presences?" Sam asked, looking between the two of them. Audrey nodded.
"Demon presence, spiritual pressure, mystical items," Audrey answered.
"Like holy water for instance. Which I'm still little pissed about, by the way." Nicki piped up. Dean glared at her a little.
"It's not as impressive as it sounds. It's more just...handy." Audrey fidgeted with the scarf around her neck.
"Wait, that means you can find the demon, right? Which means you can just tell us where it is, we can exorcise it, and then it's over. No more evil demon." Sam looked at his brother with an almost excited look. Dean raised his brow and made a face that said 'that could work.'
The women looked at each other and were about to answer when a tiny voice interrupted them. "Audrey," The group turned to the open doorway to the room where a tiny girl in flannel night gown pajamas stood clutching her rabbit tightly. "I had a scary dream." Audrey was up out of her seat almost immediately and kneeled down to pick up the sniffling little girl, patting her tousled hair in an attempt to comfort her.
"Look, it's late, you guys are probably tired, and I need to put her back to bed. Can we pick this up some other time?" Audrey asked, silently pleading with them to leave.
"Yeah, sure, of course." The youngest Winchester stood up, followed by his brother. "Um…I guess, give me a call if you want to talk. You still have my number right?" Audrey nodded, and Sam smiled sheepishly, "Great. Oh, and thanks for the patch job," he added, tapping the sealed cut on his forehead. Audrey laughed a little, which made him smile.
Dean sighed loudly and rolled his eyes at him. "Come on Romeo. My baby's gettin' cold and lonely out there. Let's go pick her up before someone tows her." he urged, grabbing his brother's arm and pulling him out into the cold night.
"Dude, what is your problem?" Sam asked, wrenching his arm away from his brother once they were a few paces down the street.
"You, Sam. What were you thinkin' back there?" Dean scolded.
"What are you talking about?"
"You know what I'm talkin' about, asking them for help," Dean clarified.
"I asked them because I thought that they could help. What's so wrong with that?" Sam asked back.
"Sam, you know the rules. We don't let people get involved."
"Since when has that been a rule?" Sam laughed out loud.
"Since you asked witches to help Sammy." Sam stopped walking and looked at his brother in exasperation.
"Is that what this is about? Dean, you heard them yourself, they don't hurt people."
"Yeah, and how many times have we heard that from something that later tried to shoot us?" Dean pointed out as he turned to face his brother. He sighed and walked the few steps back, closer to his brother. "Look, if this is about you wantin' to be, you know, friendly with that Audrey chick, that's fine,"
"Dean, less than four hours ago you were practically suggesting I bash her over the head and have my way with her before you went a practically screwed Nicki in an alley behind the bar," Sam interjected.
"That was acting, and don't change the subject! What is it Sam? Why ask them?" Dean questioned.
Sam sighed and looked around briefly before focusing back on his brother with a shrug. "I don't know man. It seemed like the best idea. If they can help, we can put this thing down faster. And if they were born this way and they're not using their powers for evil, then I don't see the difference between them or Missiouri or Pamela or even me. I really don't think they're bad, Dean, they're just different."
Dean sighed heavily and rubbed his hand over his face, unable to think of a good counterargument. "Alright, fine. But if this turns bad, and you're wrong, I'm shooting you too. Do you hear me?"
Sam laughed a little at his brother's threat and nodded. "Yeah, I hear ya. Are we done now?" the younger Winchester asked.
"Yeah we're done. Let's go. I wanna get back to my baby."
And with that the Winchester boys walked on into the night.
Yay new chapter! Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed it. Reviews and feedback would be loved.
Also, someone asked me for an example of what Audrey and Nicki look like, and I was wondering if anyone else would be interested in that? I found some pretty close examples, but the characters aren't really based off of any particular person just pictures in my head.
