It was cold. Fog hung freezing and heavy in the air, pressing down on Rick and Ty as they walked around the prison yard.
Ty was still fuming about Michonne lying to him all these years. When "Jessie" came into the kitchen and recognized Hershel as his adopted father, their idyllic life fell apart. Hershel yelled at Jackson, who yelled back that he and Jo ruined his life, Daryl stood up for his lover and started yelling at Hershel. Maggie and Beth, who had no idea that they had an adopted older brother, screamed at their father for keeping Jackson a secret, and Michonne's worst fear was realized when Ty quickly found out that Michonne had given up a child just months before they met.
Carol ushered Michonne to the infirmary to sit with Lori, as Rick took Ty out for some fresh air.
"We were fifteen. Fifteen years old. We were in no position to raise a child. Ty, I'm telling you, I didn't tell Lori either. She just found out about it last night. We talked about it, and I think things will be okay. Andrea…you gotta watch out for her. She tried to break me and Lori up, and it started by showing me a picture of my buddy Shane kissing her on the cheek. This was when everything first happened, and my wife thought I was dead. I treated her like shit, I wasn't there for our daughter's birth, and I almost threw away over a misunderstanding. It was a picture of a kiss. A fucking kiss, and I almost messed up the best thing to happen to me. Don't do the mistake I made and shut Michonne out. You've got five kids together, and another one on the way. Don't make the mistake I made."
"She lied to me."
"We were fifteen. My parents weren't happy about having a half black grandson. And we had no legal rights because we were so young. Jessie is cool. He stood by Lori when I should have. If we're gonna ride this thing out together, we gotta overlook stuff that happened twenty years ago."
Michonne and Lori were alone in the infirmary, with Lori comforting her new friend and ally.
"Don't take any crap from him. Don't let him shut you out. Rick's talking with him now, but if Ty doesn't step up I will, because I know what that pain is. Don't take any crap. Worry about yourself and your baby." She said, as her hand gently rubbed Michonne's belly.
The dreadlocked beauty nodded, and said "maybe the four of us can sit down. Jessie too."
"That would be good with me. I've got a stepson." Lori smiled.
Ty sat on one of the benches while Rick went back into the prison to look for Lori. He could hear the sounds of crying from Jessie and Daryl's cell, Maggie and Beth's Collette, and Elodie. He knocked gently on the door to the infirmary, and smiled when he opened the door and saw his past and his present sitting together.
"I'll grab some waters. It's not that bad outside…I think the four of us need to talk."
When the four got to the benches in the holding area, warmer than the prison yard, Ty was the first to speak up.
"Lori. You're alright with this? Your husband had a kid with another woman."
She hesitated. "It was hard to hear at first, but I don't have a problem with it because it happened twenty years ago. It wasn't until years after that when I met Rick. If he had a child with a woman last week, I'd be pissed. But twenty years ago? When I didn't know he existed? No. And even if I knew about the child when we met I'd accept him because Rick is the father. And I love my husband." She said, putting her hand on top of Rick's.
"Baby, please listen to what she's saying.' Michonne pleaded. Ty didn't respond or even look in her direction.
"Ty," Lori continued. "Getting the cold shoulder is the worst thing in the world. Especially when you're pregnant. I even thought about killing myself, because my world was crumbling. But I have two kids who need their mom, and I wanted to bring my baby into this world. It was twenty years ago."
Rick looked at his wife in stunned silence. Suicide. He never thought she'd be pushed that far. She looked at Ty. "How about you and I go inside, we'll send Jessie out. The three of them need to talk, and we can talk over this too."
Ty nodded, and Lori slipped out of her seat. Rick stood up and grabbed onto her tightly. He was shaken at the thought of her contemplating suicide because of the way he treated
Lori walked to Daryl and Jessie's cell to let the younger man that his biological parents are waiting and want to talk to him. He exchanged a long look with Daryl, then stood up to walk outside.
The three spoke for hours. Michonne explained that she wanted to keep him, but Rick's parents were against it because he's half black. They were only fifteen, and they were sure the Greenes could provide a better home. They didn't know that Jo was manipulative and Hershel was a drunk. Not a day went by that they didn't think of him.
"But you both moved on, got married and had other kids." Jessie said, tears streaming down his face.
He was sitting next to Rick, who wrapped his arm tightly around his son and pulled him closer.
"I'm sorry, bud. I wish things were different back then."
Michonne wiped tears from her eyes. Her family was willing to keep the boy. She wanted to. Rick wanted to. It was his parents. His racist parents who didn't want a half black grandson.
"Did you ever try to look for me?"
"Yes. I did. The Greenes moved from Kings County to be near Savannah. Don't think for a second I ever stopped thinking about what could have been. All those years. I'm sorry" Rick said, as he tried to swallow a sob.
Lori was pacing back and forth between the door and the bottom step of the cellblock. Shen she saw Rick cry she ached to get him. The past year was bumpy, no doubt about that, but she truly loved him. He and the three children they had together were the best thing to ever happen to her. She will gladly accept Jessie as her step-son.
Ty was quiet, despite Lori's attempts to get him to talk.
"Ty, please, don't turn your back on her. They were fifteen."
"Yeah, well, she met me couplea months after the boy was born. Never said a thing."
"Try to imagine what she was going through. Fifteen and having a child, and then having no choice but to give that baby up. She was heartbroken. Please, Ty….let her off the hook. Rick ignored me because he thought I kissed someone, just a simple kiss, and he almost ended our marriage. Over a kiss. Rick is a man of honor, and I trust him. Andrea is a snake, and tried to use the situation to her advantage. But Rick believes in keeping his marriage vows."
Ty was silent.
"Please, give her a break. Take it from me. The worst thing you can do is ignore her."
He was silent, stoic. Eventually he broke the silence with "Over a kiss?"
Lori nodded her head as she wiped tears away. "Andrea. She's a snake. Shane and Rick were best friends since they were kids. Grade school, high school, college, the police academy and then they were partners on the force. He was Carl's godfather. He got shot in the line of duty and after his surgery he slipped into a coma. I was about six months along with Julia. Shane told us he thought he was dead and got the kids and me to safety. I did nothing but cry over my husband. I love that man. We were at a quarry that Rick and I would always go to in college. I was crying one day and Shane gave me a hug, then a kiss on the cheek. Andrea used her phone to snap a picture, and later showed it to Rick after Shane died. She wanted Rick to herself, and thought that if she told him I was cheating, he'd leave me for her. It worked…everything but him leaving. He ignored me and wasn't there for Julia's birth. Jessie was. When he brought Hershel and his girls back the other night he knew I'd find out, so he told me. We're alright now. He thought I was cheating because of a stupid picture of a stupid kiss taken by a stupid woman. But now he kisses me goodnight at the end of every day. Michonne loves you. Don't throw away what you have on something that happened two decades ago."
Ty nodded his head, then stood up and walked to the door that separated the cellblock from the holding area. He pulled the door open quickly, and asked "y'all need some company?"
The miss-matched family of five talked for a while. Ty said Michonne dropped out of high school during her junior year to take care of Collette, and since he was one year ahead of her he graduated on time, but put off college and a possible future with the NFL to help raise Elodie, Terry, and Michael. Andre was their surprise a few years ago and the "bun in the over" was a bigger surprise.
Rick looked at Michonne while Ty was talking about the past…the timetable wasn't adding up. She was trying to avoid his gaze.
Ty went on to say that Michonne found work as a cashier at WalMart while he worked as an auto mechanic. Collette, their oldest at eighteen, planned on attending community college to be a teacher.
Carol poked her head into the room to let everyone know that dinner was ready. Ty, Michonne, Rick and Lori stood up and Rick stretched out the knot in his back.
Jessie told the four that he'll join them in a few minutes. He headed to his cell, and thought about what lies ahead; a confrontation with Hershel. His "mother" giving him up, but keeping a child she had just a year later. His head was swimming. Just when he found happiness, everything was being ripped away.
While they were heading to the dinner table Rick pulled Lori aside. He was desperately looking for an answer.
"Suicide?" He asked, as his crystal blue eyes lock onto her brown orbs.
She lowered her gaze and nodded her head.
"You have no idea how much it hurt. And to think of you hooking up with Andrea…"
"Baby, nothing happened."
"I know, but that evening, I was delayed by just a minute. Andrea got to your first. You pushed me…physically pushed me. And all the times I tried to talk to you, you just turned your back. If it wasn't for the kids, I think I would have. It seemed like you were doing pretty good on your own. You picked a cell that was as far away from me as you can get."
"You never mentioned you thought about killing yourself."
"You wouldn't listen."
Rick draped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer to him. A weak hug soon became a tight embrace.
"I had no idea. I was a monster. Christ, Lori, I'm so sorry."
He could feel her body shake with sobs and his shirt became damp from her tears. He tried to contain himself. "I'm so sorry."
Daryl left a book, "Surviving Childhood Trauma" on the shelf in the cell. Jessie tore out a page that was mostly blank, and scribbled out a few notes;
Daryl, my love. You've made me so happy. I'm sorry, but I can't go on like this.
Hershel – you said I was the worst thing you've ever done. I wish I never met you.
Michonne and Rick…"mom and dad"…you're so happy with your own families. Would I have been that much of a pain in the ass? You never tried to look for me? Michonne – you kept the child you had just a year later? Keep telling yourselves that it was because you were too young. You fucked me over. Fuck you both. I'm dead because of you.
He sat on the bunk he shares with Daryl. Hours earlier he was lying here in orgasmic bliss. He can't face the people who never wanted him. Daryl's hunting knife was on the shelf, under the book. Jessie made sure he pulled over the privacy curtain, shut the cell door, sat back down, and started cutting his wrists.
