Liam felt like he was walking on air as he put the comforter back over himself and followed the brothers out to the car. Both hunters seemed to be in bad moods from earlier events, their expressions sour. Still, even as frantic as he was about Alice, he’d still managed to get the brothers to do what he wanted. Well, he’d gotten to Sam, who had gone to bat for him and won over Dean. Really, as much as Sam seem to be on his side more than Dean, it should’ve been Sam’s ass he was gawking at. It wasn’t. Despite the worry he felt, his eyes were glued to the perfection that was Dean’s backside as it moved under his jeans while the man walked at a brisk pace to the car. Dean got into the car and started up the engine and waited for Sam and Liam to get in as well. “Where am I going?”
Liam gave the address of Twin Oaks personal care home. Dean exhaled sharply and tore out of the parking lot. The place was on the other side of the town, so they’d have to be in the car together for a little while. Liam knew better than to try and talk though. The way Dean was taking turns sharply and yelling impatiently at other drivers, it was plain as day the hunter was a little sore at being roped into doing something he really didn’t want to do yet again. Sam didn’t open his mouth either.
Twelve minutes later Dean was pulling into the parking lot. “Let me out at the door,” Liam instructed. Dean drove up to the entrance and slammed on the breaks, sending the vampire’s form slamming into the back of Sam’s seat. Sam glared over at Dean. Liam sighed and slipped out of the car door and very quickly put himself under the overhang in front. He stood just outside the front door and waited for Dean to park and the brothers to join him. They would see.
“At least it really is a nursing home,” Dean mumbled under his breath.
Sam gave Liam a look that seemed to say, ‘I stuck my neck out for you, you better not be double crossing me’. It was eerie that he could understand nonverbal communication from the brothers already. He was good at reading people, but just then it was as if he could hear the words in his head.
He led the brothers down the hall. Both of them kept up their guard as if they were waiting for some hellspawn to leap out at them at any moment. Liam had to shake his head at that. Who would use a nursing home as the site for an ambush? Then again, the things they were used to dealing with, they might be that low. Liam knew exactly where he was going. The place was pretty quiet, only the occasional nurse in scrubs passing them and offering the trio a kind smile. He led the brothers to the elevator and pressed the button. There was a little ding when the doors opened and he pressed the button to go to the second floor. Then he turned left and stooped at the third door on the right.
Liam paused when his hand came to rest on the doorknob. His stomach gave an uncomfortable little twist because there was no telling what he’d find on the other side of that door. He’d really never told anyone until now about Alice. Was it a coincidence that the demons lured them to the very same city his family lived in, or was it a message?
With a calming breath he forced himself to open the door and step inside. The room was small and neat. A single bed with a patchwork quilt on it was just to the left in the corner. A simple wooden dresser was across from it against a wall that jutted out from where the bathroom was. To the right there was a tall narrow stand with dark wooden beams and glass shelves. On the shelves were elephant figurines of all sizes and types imaginable. But in the very back right corner sitting in a tan recliner across from a turned off television was what made Liam smile warmly. There sat Alice in her favorite purple dress with little yellow flowers on it. Her dark gray wavy hair came down to the bottom of her earlobes. She turned as the three men entered the room and her bright blue eyes lit up. “Uncle Liam!” she cried with a wide infectious smile, clapping her hands together.
He rushed over to her, leaning down to give her a hug. “There’s my favorite girl!” He was so relieved that she seemed completely unharmed that nothing else really mattered at the moment.
Dean was right behind him, and he splashed her with holy water. “What?” he said when Liam raised an eyebrow sharply at him with a glare. “Had to check.” The look on the hunter’s face suggested that he was actually glad he was wrong.
“That’s quite all right young man,” Alice said as she wiped her face with her hand. “Not the first time I’ve been splashed with holy water. They friends of yours?”
Liam ducked into the little bathroom to grab a paper towel and came back out to dry Alice off with it like an overprotective mother would do with her child. “I guess you could say that.” He really wasn’t sure he could call the hunters friends at this point with the way they seemed to doubt him every time the wind blew wrong, but he wasn’t going to get into semantics just then.
Dean moved back to stand closer to the door with his brother. Both men stood awkwardly with their hands in their pockets like they weren’t sure what to do with themselves. Liam turned his head toward them with a smirk. “You know, at this point, I should get some kind of special treat every time I get to say I told you so.”
“Don’t push it!” Dean growled.
Alice took Liam’s hand to bring his attention back to her, and he knelt down beside her chair. “So, Uncle Liam, it’s been a long time.”
“Yeah, I’m sorry sweetie.” He reached to lovingly run a hand through her hair. “I’ve kinda been working on a project.”
“The same project you’ve been working on since I was a little girl?” her eyebrows raised.
“Yes,” Liam nodded, looking a little sheepish. “It’s a hell of a project.”
“Well, where’s my elephant?” she looked at him expectantly.
“Elephant?” Dean repeated the word, his head tilting to the side and then looking at the shelf. “You mean, all those...?”
“Yes, they’re all gifts from me,” Liam confirmed. “On her seventh birthday my gift to her was a trip to the circus. She really seemed to love the elephants, so, it kind of became a thing where every time I visit her I bring her an elephant figurine.”
Alice’s eyes got wide as she recalled the memory. “I was so little, and they were so big! So, where is it? I wanna see what you found for me this time.”
Liam frowned and sighed. “I’m gonna have to say I’m sorry again. This visit wasn’t exactly planned, and I didn’t get the chance to get you one. I know, I’m a bad uncle.”
She pouted for a second, but then reached out to cup his cheek and shook her head. “No, you’re the best uncle a girl could ask for. Now, set up the chess board. I bet I can beat you!”
“I bet you could too. You always do. But alas, I have to disappoint you a third time. I don’t have the time for a chess game. Like I said, this was an impromptu visit. Something happened, and I just needed to see you.”
Just then the door opened and two people walked in. Everyone in the room turned to look at the woman in her twenties with long black wavy hair in jeans and a red shirt and the man with salt and pepper hair in jeans and a shirt that was white with a wide bright green stripe across the chest. “Missy.” Liam stood up, looking surprised to see her.
She looked just as surprised to see him. “Liam.”
The man’s eyes narrowed and he looked a little confused. “Honey, isn’t that the guy that was in all those photos of your parents’ wedding we looked at last night?”
Missy gave a nervous laugh and a little wave of her hand. “How could it be? Someone would’ve had to dip him in liquid nitrogen or something for it to be the same guy looking exactly the same. No, you’re thinking of Liam’s father. I can see your confusion though, he is the spitting image of his father. It’s a little freaky.”
“But, didn’t you say...?”
She turned toward her companion and placed her hand on his chest. “Sweetheart, I think I left the bag of cookies in the car. Would you be a dear and go get them?”
“Sure,” the guy said and turned and left the room.
Liam crossed his arms and cocked an eyebrow. “You’ve been married to George for a little over a year now, and you still haven’t told him?”
Missy rolled her eyes like a petulant teenager. “What would you like me to tell him? That the men in my family hunt things that are just in most people’s nightmares? Yeah, sure, honey, hate to shatter your world view, but all those monsters you thought were only legend, yeah, well, they’re real and my dad and great grandfather hunted them. Oh, and it gets better because when my parents had to leave they didn’t get a pimply faced teenager to watch me, no, they got the vampire that used to be shacked up with my great grandfather! That doesn’t sound crazy at all! No, my family is not going to deal with all that hunter shit.”
Liam shrugged. “What did you tell him about your father then?”
“I told him my father was a criminal defence lawyer that was shot by a crazy client.”
“I guess that’s a reasonable lie to tell.”
She shot him a quick glare, then motioned to Sam and Dean. “Who are they, vampires too?”
“No, they’re hunters.” Liam answered.
“Oh, so you’re on that kick again. Didn’t Dad tell you there was no way to do it?”
It was Liam’s turn to shoot Missy a nasty glare. “It’s not a kick, more like a lifelong obsession. And I know your dad was a very good hunter, but he didn’t know everything.”
“What you need is someone who loves you,” Alice’s voice cut through the room and made all eyes turn to her again.
Liam knelt down by her again, his brows furrowed and a large bubble in his chest that was threatening to burst. “Alice, sweetie, what are you talking about?”
“Daddy told me you need someone who loves you.”
“So, he did find something? And... And I guess he really didn’t love me.” Liam felt his world suddenly crash and shatter into a billion pieces. “That would explain why he never told me.”
“No, he loved you, maybe too much.”
Now Liam was just thoroughly confused. “Wait, what?”
Alice gave him a little smile and took his hand in hers and squeezed it. “He was worried about you. You don’t listen! Daddy used to say that getting you to cooperate when you had other ideas was like trying to train a cat.”
That earned a snort of amusement from Dean. “I’ve only been with the guy for four days, and believe me, I share the sentiment.”
“My dad used to say pretty much the same thing,” Missy chimed in.
Liam’s mouth opened and closed several times with nothing coming out. He was trying to defend himself, but he knew he really didn’t have much of a leg to stand on. Alice had never really talked to him this way before and it kind of caught him off guard.
“When you first met Daddy and didn’t know a thing about hunting you hung on his every word,” Alice continued. “But then, as you got more comfortable in your abilities, you got more reckless. All the bullets he dug out of you...”
“In two days I dug two out of him,” Sam entered the conversation.
“The first one was to save your asses, and the second was totally Dean’s fault,” Liam shot back.
“Was not!” Dean argued. “Aren’t you supposed to be the one with super senses that should’ve seen the guy coming?”
Liam huffed. “You told the demon to go ahead and shoot me, and he did!”
“Just shush!” Alice cried. “Uncle Liam, you’re missing the point that I think you’re friends are helping me make. Daddy found the spell two years before he died, but he was too afraid to go through with it. He was afraid for you. That bullet that was to save their asses, did you even flinch at the sight of a gun pointed at you, or even try to think of a way to deal with the situation without a shot being fired?”
Liam frowned at the question, trying to think back. “Well, no, because-”
“Because while a bullet hurts, it won’t kill you,” she finished the sentence for him. “Daddy knew that turning you human again would mean turning you squishy. Him, he spent his whole hunting career being careful and thinking about the consequences of things because he was mortal and didn’t want to leave me and Michael without a father. He watched you rely so heavily on your invulnerability. It had been so long by the time he met you, it was what you knew. He knew that if he went through with the spell you would have to change the way you did things. Your whole world and everything you knew would’ve gotten suddenly turned on its head. And well, with your listening skills... He feared you would be dead on the first hunt you went on with him. Because you know, you’re very old in chronological years, but I don’t think you ever really grew up. That’s one of the things I always loved about you as a child. You were just a big kid at heart. But, that’s also why I shared Daddy’s fears when he came to me to talk about the spell. He loved you, very much, as do I. We came to the decision that we couldn’t risk losing you. That’s why we said nothing and kept you as you are.”
“Listen to the woman,” Dean nodded.
“What she’s saying is very true,” Sam agreed. “Dean and I, we’ve gotten into tons of bad scrapes and really close calls. Just staying alive hasn’t been easy. Hell, you were with us and watched as Dean was nearly killed by those hell hounds. You saw him in the hospital. That’s what hunting as a human is like. We have to rely on each other and plan things out as a team. I mean, sure, things don’t always go according to plan obviously, and sometimes we have to improvise, but yeah, what Dean said, listen to the woman.”
“And you should know what happens when things go really wrong,” Missy said, her features softening a little. “Maybe if you would’ve been with him... But you were with me when my dad went on that last hunt and didn’t come home.”
Alice’s words made Liam feel like he was about to cry. He bent down even further to lay his head on her lap. His eyes closed when he felt her hands run through his hair. “I love you too, girl, very much.” Then he sat up and looked at her again. “But, one thing I don’t understand. Why are you only just telling me all this now?”
Her gaze flicked over to the table beside her where her tarot cards lay. “It wasn’t the right time until now.”
Liam raised an eyebrow. “Have you been checking up on me?”
She gave a little laugh. “Hey, you check up on me, and I check up on you. That’s how love works you know.”
Liam chuckled. “Yeah, I guess it does at that. So, your daddy, he found the spell. Did he by chance write it down or put it anywhere? Because if he did, you and I can do it and...”
Alice shook her head. “That’s not how it works. It has to be romantic love. Uncle Liam, I love you with all my heart, but not in that way.”
Liam suddenly deflated. So close, and yet, so far. “So, even if he did write the spell down, it wouldn’t do me any good anyway. Just lovely...”
Alice patted his hand. “He didn’t write it down. We left it in the lore book he found it in. As for it being of use to you...” She looked at Dean for a moment and smirked. “I think everything will work itself out in time. In fact, I know it will.”
“Time,” Liam bowed his head and huffed. “That seems to be all I’ve got.”
“For a three hundred and some odd year old person, you’re very impatient,” Alice gave him a stern look.
“Sing it sister!” Dean commented.
“That’s enough from the peanut gallery,” Liam huffed. He turned back to Alice. “Sweetie, I love you dearly, and this has been an enlightening and informative chat, but we really need to get going.”
“No we don’t,” Dean turned to Missy and flashed her his best charming grin. “I’m not about to let a chance like this slip through my fingers. Missy, I don’t know why it’s taking your honey so long to get back, but you’re here, and we’re here... You’ve known the vamp a long time. We need to know more about the vamp. So, spill.”
Liam sighed and waved his arm in a ‘go ahead’ gesture and sat on the floor.
Missy chuckled and shook her head. “What do you need to know?”
“Well, for as long as we’ve known him he’s been trying to sell it to us that he’s a really good guy. What we need to know is if he’s full of crap.”
Missy motioned over to Alice. “You just saw for yourself how he is with my grandmother. It’s why I let him come visit her. That, and he pays for this place what her Social Security doesn’t cover. So yeah, he’s not a bad guy, for a vampire.”
“You said something about he used to babysit you?”
“Yeah, my mom was a corporate lawyer, and sometimes she’d have to go out of town on business trips. My dad was a hunter and would go out on hunts a lot. When neither of them could be home, he stayed with me. When I was little he made me feel safe. He was very good at checking my bedroom for monsters. When I was older and knew what he was, it was just weird, but not because of anything he did. It’s just, having a vampire for a sitter isn’t exactly normal, you know? But, he did what my parents wanted him to do, which was keep me safe, even if that meant splashing holy water on my boyfriend that tried to sneak in but couldn’t because he hears fucking everything...”
“Is he reliable? I mean, can we count on him when it really matters?”
“My family has always been able to, yeah. Let’s see, when I was twelve and I saw a werewolf in our neighborhood one night I told my mom about it. My dad was on a hunt, so she called Liam. He was at our house the next day, hunted the thing down and killed it. Of course, I didn’t know what he was then, and it scared the piss out of me that all our neighbors were suddenly being attacked by something that broke into their houses, knocked them out and bit them in the arm. My mom told me not to worry about it, but how does a twelve year old not worry about something like that?”
“I see,” Dean nodded. “This conversation was also very informative. Thanks.”
“Not a problem,” Missy smiled at him.
Just then George finally returned. “Babe, I looked all over the car a dozen times for the cookies. I couldn’t find them anywhere.”
“Oh, I must’ve forgotten them at home. Silly me.”
“We’ll just get out of your way so you can have a nice visit with your grandmother,” Dean said, motioning for Liam to get up off the floor.
Liam got to his feet and gave Alice a quick kiss on the cheek. “I’ll see you again soon, I hope.” He followed the hunters out, none of them saying anything all the way back down.
Liam had to wait just outside the front door for Dean to pull the car up so he could climb in and get quickly back under the blanket. Dean was watching him in the rear view window, and then turned back to him with a deep sigh. “Look, when I’m wrong, I say I’m wrong.”
“No, you don’t.” Sam argued.
Dean turned to glare at his brother with pursed lips. “I’m saying it now!” He turned back to Liam. “What I’m trying to say is I’m sorry for doubting you. Even you have to admit things looked bad from where we sit, but I’m glad I got to see you with Alice. It kinda reinforced everything you’ve been trying to tell us. I’m telling you though, everything she said about you was dead on.”
“Dude, take the mostly heartfelt apology,” Sam advised. “They don’t come around very often.”
“Alright,” Liam smiled. “Apology accepted. Now, let’s get back to the motel and figure out what we’re doing... together.”
