Liam was sitting with Sam and John in the kitchen. Sam had his son in his lap and was feeding him baby food. “Liam, could you get me a paper towel or something? I think more is getting on me than in his mouth.”
Liam got up and grabbed a paper towel handing it to Sam who started cleaning himself up. Dean came in and kissed Liam on the cheek. “Finally out of the sling. How does it feel?”
“Good,” Liam smiled a little. “I got so used to functioning with one arm I forgot what two feels like.”
Dean wrapped an arm around his waist. “Think you might want to go upstairs and um…?”
“No,” Liam shook his head.
Dean sighed and looked disappointed. “Okay...”
Liam frowned. “I’m sorry, yeah, we can go upstairs.”
“Liam,” Dean shot him a look. “I’m not mad at you, not for saying no to sex anyway. I’m horny, yes, because it’s been seven weeks, but horny won’t kill me. What upsets me is you saying yes to sex after you said no because you think I’m mad. God, I think that shrink actually made you worse.”
“He was right, I did bury my pain about twenty feet under, and I keep pushing it deeper with things like sex that feel good.”
Dean shrugged. “So? So do I. Liam, I just want the old you back, the one that didn’t analyze everything to death. People do things that feel good to make them forget about the bad crap. I’ve got a landfill of bad crap. You’ve got probably two Titanics full of bad crap if not more. Take it from someone who has been to hell, what you survived was damn close, and you were just a little kid. If anyone is entitled to drown their past in pleasure you are.”
Liam sighed and nodded. “Okay.”
Dean’s phone rang and he answered it. After a short conversation he hung up. He looked to Sam. “Do you remember Donna, our babysitter in Housatonic, Massachusetts?”
“Kinda, yeah,” Sam nodded. “Why do you ask?”
“That was her. She’s got a spirit problem.”
Sam nodded. “Okay. Natalie is taking a nap. I hate to, but I’ll go wake her so we can go.”
They loaded everything up and left. Once they arrived Donna invited them in. “Who is this?” Donna motioned to Liam.
“My boyfriend, Liam,” Dean introduced him proudly. “We’ve been together almost three years.”
“Really?” Donna looked surprised. “The way you used to chase girls and look at me?”
Dean shrugged. “Things change. I met Liam, and I just, I don’t know.”
Donna invited them in and they sat in the living room catching up a little with Donna’s teenage daughter. Then they got right down to business. “Sounds like you guys got yourself a poltergeist,” Dean said.
Donna’s husband came down with suitcases. “Started a month or two after we moved in.”
Donna nodded. “Yeah, first it was, uh, just bumps and knocks and scratches on the walls. And then it started breaking things.”
“And then it attacked Katie?” Sam asked.
Donna turned to their daughter. “Can you show them, honey?”
Katie stood up and pulled up her shirt. The words ‘murdered chylde’ were scratched into her belly.
“Katie, everything's gonna be fine. I promise,” Dean assured her. “Why don't you guys take yourselves a little vacation, and, uh, we'll take care of it.”
“Thank you,” Donna nodded with a small smile.
They went to a burger joint for a bite to eat while they did research. Dean brought their food on a tray. “So, uh, Sam, how are things going with the rugrat and everything?”
Sam looked up at him a little surprised. “You actually want to talk about that stuff?”
Dean shrugged. “Well, I know things are a little crazy, and we’ve been sucked into our relationships and work. Just thought I would touch base with my brother. That okay with you?”
“Uh, yeah, just a little surprised that’s all. Um, things are, well, you said it, crazy. The main focus has been John, which I guess is the way it’s supposed to work. When you guys take John we get have couple time, which is nice. You guys really are a great help by the way. But um, becoming parents has mostly killed the romance if you know what I mean.”
“I see,” Dean nodded. “Any plans for more rugrats?”
“God, no,” Sam shook his head. “I mean, don’t get me wrong. Now that John is here I love him more than my own life, but he wasn’t planned for. We just didn’t take precautions because we didn’t think about it and here he is. Now Natalie is on birth control, so no more.”
“Aww, but John needs a pain in the ass younger sibling,” Dean chuckled.
“No,” Sam insisted. “Just no. Sorry, but he’s gonna be a spoiled rotten only child.”
Dean sighed and sat back. “Okay, enough brother time. What do you have on the house?”
“Uh, well, that house of theirs, it's really old. Um, hundreds of years. And I found a legend. It’s unconfirmed, but still. Supposedly, in the 1720s, the house was owned by a guy named Isaiah Pickett. Legend has it he hung a woman in his backyard for witchcraft, a woman named Maggie Briggs.”
“Okay, so an angry ghost witch?” Dean looked to his brother.
“If it's true. That still doesn't explain what ‘murdered chylde’ means.”
“No, or where the bitch is buried,” Liam added.
Sam sighed. “You know, I mean, it's a long way back, but I can see if I can find something in the town records.”
“It's worth a shot,” Dean nodded.
Liam and Dean did a little snooping of their own. Sam called Dean and told him he got nothing. Sam was supposed to come back to the motel but didn’t so they went looking for him. When they gave up and returned to the motel Sam was there. “Sam. Where the hell you been, man? I've been trying to call you for hours,” Dean growled.
Sam held up a bag of food. “I picked up some food. Bacon burger turbo, large chilli cheese fry, right? Sorry, man. Really. I just, I lost track of time. I didn't mean to freak you out.”
Dean grabbed the bag. “Thanks. Don't know why it took you two hours, but thanks.”
“Did you just forget about me?” Liam asked.
“Sorry, um...” Sam looked at Liam and froze.
“Did you suddenly forget my name?” Liam looked at him strangely.
“No, of course not,” Sam laughed. “I’m just tired is all.”
“Liam, you can have the fries,” Dean offered.
“Okay, I’m appeased for now.”
“Oh, you're gonna want to eat that on the road,” Sam said. The maid came in, saw that,” he looked to all the guns on the bed, “and now they're all kind of freaking out.”
“Why'd you let the maid in?” Dean shot his brother a look.
“It just happened,” Sam shrugged.
“Whatever,” Dean sighed. “I got to hit the head, and then we'll take off.”
Dean went to the bathroom and Sam just kind of stared at Liam. “What?” Liam looked confused. “Is there something in my teeth?”
“No,” Sam shook his head. “I’m just gonna be outside.”
When Dean came out Liam kissed him. “Does something seem wrong with Sam to you?”
Dean shrugged. “Haven’t really noticed. I mean, yeah, it’s a little weird he didn’t bring you any food and forgot your name. Maybe baby brain isn’t just for mothers.”
Sam was waiting in the passenger side of the car when they came out. “Hey, can I drive?” Sam asked Dean.
“I guess...” Dean gave him a funny look.
They switched sides and Sam looked really happy. “Oh, this is so sweet!” Sam revved the engine.
“You want to get the lead out, Andretti? Come on,” Dean urged him. Sam put the car into reverse. “Reverse!” Dean shouted. The car shot backward into a dumpster. “It's in reverse,” Dean growled.
“I am really, really sorry,” Sam said as he got out.
“Sam, did you hit your head or something?” Liam asked. “You forget me, then you pull a me with the car.”
Sam swallowed hard. “Just having a really off day.”
“Okay then,” Liam shrugged.
They moved to a different motel. “Okay,” Dean turned to his brother. “Go get your room and I guess we’ll see you in the morning.”
“Wait, separate rooms?” Sam looked confused.
“Yeah,” Dean nodded. “I know it’s been a while, but a guy can still dream.”
“Oh, I have a feeling you might get lucky,” Liam smirked.
“How would you know that?” Sam turned to him.
Liam blinked. “Sam, you really sure you didn’t hit your head? I didn’t want to say it outright, but I’m in the mood.”
“Oh, gross!” Sam shouted and got out of the car to get his room shaking his head.
Dean turned to Liam. “Sex, then talk?”
“Works for me,” Liam grabbed Dean’s hand and walked with him to the office.
Fifteen minutes later Dean collapsed beside Liam panting heavily. “Oh god,” Dean breathed. “Worth the wait. Okay, now back to Sam. You’re right, he isn’t acting himself. What are your thoughts?”
Liam shrugged. “I don’t know. I mean, he’s been acting immature ever since he disappeared for that two hours. Maybe some kind of spell on him? He didn’t remember me, so maybe he was regressed?”
“Great,” Dean sighed. “So, we’re dealing with a ghost and a witch in the same town?”
“Let’s just get some sleep and deal with the ghost tomorrow. Then we’ll probe Sam some more.”
Dean nodded and snuggled Liam close to sleep. In the morning they waited for Sam, but he never showed. They found him in a diner. “Dude, what the hell?” Dean shot his brother a look.
“What?” Sam looked confused. “I was hungry.”
“So were we, and we waited for you. Seriously, what the hell is up with you?”
“I’m sorry. I guess rough night turned into rough morning? I thought you two would be doing gay stuff together. That’s what you bring him along for isn’t it?”
Liam’s eyes narrowed. “Don’t make me hurt you.”
Sam laughed. “I’m bigger and I’ve got muscles. Plus, you’re gay.”
“I’m sorry, come here and let’s hug it out,” Liam beckoned him closer.
Sam got up from his seat to move toward Liam and got a swift knee to the crotch that sent him to his knees. Dean shook his head. “Dude, you must be really out of it to not have seen that coming. You’ve known Liam almost three years, he’s a quick, vicious, and tricky little bastard. Come on, Babe, let’s get some grub.”
They ate and headed back out to the car. “Okay, ghost thing,” Liam sighed. “Where do you want to start?”
Dean sighed. “Well, since Sam couldn't find where Maggie Briggs was buried, now we have to do an all day tombstone roll to see if we can dig her up.”
“Wait. Maggie Briggs? You mean, like, the witch Maggie Briggs?” Sam asked.
“Yeah, Sherlock,” Dean nodded.
“Yeah, she's in the basement. Isaiah Pickett’s house. Okay, there's this legend that he hung her, but he didn't. The real truth is that she was carrying his illegitimate child, and he killed her and then buried her in the basement.”
Dean pondered it for a moment. “The murdered chylde. That would explain the scratches. How do you know all this?”
“Oh, I've done all kinds of research on it. I mean, you know, last night.”
“Okay,” Dean nodded. “Let’s go dig up and burn a corpse.”
They headed to the basement and found a patch of dirt. “Well, I'll be damned. Willow moss,” Dean set his bag down.
Sam nodded. “Yeah, right. It's, uh, supposed to grow over witches' graves, right?”
“Yeah,” Dean shot him a strange look. He pulled out a shovel and started digging.
Liam felt uneasy all of a sudden and turned to see Sam watching him again. “Do I suddenly amuse you?”
“No,” Sam shook his head. “It’s just they, I mean, um.” Before Sam could finish speaking he was thrown into a wall.
“Sam, you okay?” Dean called out and moved to check on him before he too was slammed into a wall.
The ghost woman appeared and started advancing on them before suddenly going up in flames. Liam was standing by the burning remains.
“Dude, that was sweet!” Sam smiled.
Dean pulled Liam close. “Let’s ply him with alcohol and see if we can find out who they is.”
Liam nodded and looked at Sam with a smile. “Where should we go to celebrate?”
They went to a bar and Sam and Dean each got a beer. “No beer for you?” Sam asked Liam.
“Um, he doesn’t like beer, remember?” Dean looked at him funny.
“Oh, yeah, I must’ve forgot,” Sam gave a sheepish grin. The waitress brought them a few shots. “I had a, uh, really awesome day, man. Seriously,” he downed a shot. “Whoo! Sweet.”
“A really awesome day?” Dean gave him another strange look. “It was a random, D list ghost hunt. That’s awesome to you?”
Sam shrugged. “I can't be in a good mood?”
“Sure,” Liam said. “What you can’t be is weird. Look into my eyes for a minute.” Sam looked at the floor. “Come on, you know I don’t bite unless you ask nicely.”
“Remind me, what happens when you bite?” Sam asked when he finally looked up.
“Nothing good,” Liam answered as he looked deep into Sam’s eyes. “But you don’t know anything about that because you’re not Sam.”
“You’re sure?” Dean asked.
“Very.”
“What?” Sam looked offended. “Now you’re having an off day.”
“Look,” Liam shot him a look. “I’ve got a knife on me. That may not mean much to you, but we can do this the easy way, or the fun way.”
“Unless you really like pain you’ll come with us quietly,” Dean said as he got up and grabbed Sam’s arm.
They took him back to the motel and tied Sam to a chair. Liam pulled out a small knife and circled Sam. “Okay, you are going to start talking. What is going on?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Sam looked scared. “You’ve lost your mind!”
“You’re not a shape shifter because I’m pretty sure that is Sam’s body. But you there in it, you can’t be more than a kid from the way you’re acting. You really thought you could pull this off?”
A phone in Sam’s jacket rang. Liam picked it up and examined it. “Not Sam’s phone. Well, whoever it is, you’re going to tell them it’s over, you’re caught.” Liam answered it and pressed it to Sam’s ear.
“Hey,” Sam said awkwardly. “Where am I? I’m tied to a chair and this crazy blond dude that was never mentioned has a knife. They know. We’re at the Cloverleaf on Route six.”
Liam took the phone. “If a single hair on our Sam is harmed I promise you you’ll be choking on your own entrails when we find you.” He hung up and turned back to Sam. “Dean, love, leave us alone for a minute so we can have a little chat.” His eyes flashed red which seemed to really freak Sam out.
Dean nodded. “Just don’t harm the packaging too much please.”
Astiratu smirked. “Don’t need to. Just a mater of knowing which nerve to hit.” Dean stepped outside and cringed a little at the screams. Astiratu then poked his head out a minute later. “He’s ready to talk. I think I broke my own record.”
Dean came back in. “Okay, what’s going on?”
Sam was paning heavily and whimpering. “A demon told us there was a bounty on your head. I was gonna sneak in inside your brother’s body and kill you for the reward. We didn’t know about him,” he motioned to Astiratu.
Astiratu laughed. “A demon’s idea of a reward is not killing you, you moron.”
“Where is our Sam?” Dean demanded.
“Trevor said he’s in my body in Trevor’s basement. His parents are out of town.”
“Parents?” Dean raised an eyebrow. “So, you are just a kid.”
“I’m seventeen,” Sam snapped.
“Okay, where does Trevor live?” Dean asked.
Before the kid inside Sam could answer Dean was thrown into a wall and a teenage girl appeared. “Nora?” Sam looked up at her.
Her eyes went black. “Not at the moment.”
Astiratu held a hand up and she started choking. Black smoke poured out of her mouth and went up in flames. Nora fell back on the bed and started panting. “Trevor’s dead,” she whimpered.
Astiratu rolled his eyes. “Let me guess, the dumb ass demanded a reward?”
“How did you know?” she looked at him surprised.
“Um, I’m not a stupid teenager. I know demons. Now, is our Sam okay?”
She nodded. “I think so. He was left tied in Trevor’s basement.”
Liam’s eyes blinked and Dean put a hand on his shoulder. “Alright, let’s go get Sam, then you’re gonna switch back.”
They found Sam still tied up and very glad to see them. Gary untied him and prepared the spell. They sat on opposite sides of the bowl while Gary switched them back. “Everything good now?” Dean asked.
Sam looked in a mirror. “Yeah, good to be back.”
“So, Gary...” Dean turned to him.
Gary hung his head. “I know, my bad.”
"My bad?” Dean raised an eyebrow. “Kid, my bad ain't gonna cut it. See, if you were of voting age you'd be dead because we would kill you. So either you straighten up and fly right or we will set the crazy blond on you with a knife. Are we clear?”
“Crystal,” Gary swallowed hard.
They drove the kids back to Gary’s parents’ house. “Remember,” Sam looked at Gary, “no matter how much you think life sucks, it’s not that bad. No more Satanic crap.”
“Yeah,” Gary nodded as he and Nora got out.
“You think they learned their lesson?” Dean wondered as they watched the kids walk inside.
Sam shrugged. “I hope so. They don’t seem like bad kids, they just got messed up in something they didn’t understand.”
“Well, I am hungry and tired.” Liam said from the backseat. “I propose food and sleep, then home.”
“Sounds good to me,” Sam nodded. “I don’t know when you guys last ate, but I’m hungry too.”
They found an open diner and got some dinner before going back to the motel to sleep. Dean nuzzled close to Liam and kissed his neck. “You are a treasure, you know that? Before I met you I used to sleep like four hours every couple of days. Now when I cuddle you I can sleep like a baby without having to get drunk.”
Liam rolled over and kissed Dean tenderly. “Glad I’m good for something.”
“Liam, you’re good for a lot of things. Don’t be so hard on yourself. I love you. Come on, let’s get some sleep.”
Liam nuzzled close, his head on Dean’s chest and he closed his eyes and relaxed.
