Erin's eyes followed Jamie as she approached Voight, who nodded to her. "This is Jamie Lindsay," he announced, addressing the confused faces of the team. "Lindsay?" Adam questioned.
"Is she related to Erin?" Adam inquired. Voight's gaze met the blonde detective's. "She is," he confirmed. "Jamie is Erin's younger sister."
As Erin massaged her temple, she listened to the team's inquiries about Jamie. "Where has she been?" Jay asked. "She recently returned from New York," Voight replied. "She didn't remain in Chicago when I took Erin in; she left with Charlie instead."
"When did she return?" Erin asked, rising from her chair. "And why wasn't I informed?" She glanced between Voight and Jamie.
"I did inform you," Voight countered. Erin's brow furrowed as she considered her forgetfulness. "I mentioned the day before that Jamie was back and would be joining Intelligence, but you weren't paying close attention.”
"Okay, that answers my first question," the brunette said, turning to Jay. "What's wrong with being partners with me?" she asked the freckled detective.
"Nothing's wrong with being partners with you," Jay replied. "Like Voight said, it's good to switch off every now and then."
Erin shook her head, not liking the answer, but she remained silent. She turned to Voight. "Can we get this case over with?" she asked, eager to end the day.
Voight nodded. "Of course. I'll text each of you which gang your team should check out. It shouldn't take more than an hour."
Erin nodded as Antonio headed downstairs. The brunette followed, not giving Jamie a chance to speak.
Jamie frowned as she watched Erin leave. She understood her sister's coldness, but it still saddened her. "Ready?" Jay asked, snapping the blond out of her thoughts.
"Oh, yeah, sure!" she replied, following him.
( Erin and Antonio)
Looking out the window as Antonio drove, Erin's leg tapped nervously. "You okay?" Antonio inquired, glancing at her.
"Yeah, I'm just a bit apprehensive about the case," Erin replied, her gaze fixed on the window, her voice conveying her unease.
Antonio shook his head, unconvinced, but he refrained from further questions as they arrived at their destination—a small bar frequented by the gang they sought.
Erin stepped out, suppressing her anxiety and resisting the urge to remain in the car. "Ready?" Antonio asked, opening the door for her.
"I can't keep avoiding it," Erin said, her voice resolute as she entered and scanned the room. Her heart pounded as her gaze fell upon the gang, her brow creased in determination.
The gang members were large and menacing, their appearance suggesting they could inflict fatal blows with ease. Erin gulped and closed her eyes.
"Hey, are you okay?"
The dark-haired detective turned to see one of the gang members standing behind her.
Erin adjusted her sleeves to conceal her trembling hands. "Yes, I'm fine," she replied, attempting to mask her fear despite being an experienced detective.
"Are you certain?" the man inquired with concern. "You appear as if you've encountered a ghost." His comment prompted a chuckle from Erin. "Yes, I'm certain. I've simply had a long day," she explained.
"I'm Ryder," the man said with a smile. "What brings detectives to our neighborhood?" he asked, glancing up as Erin's partner spoke to another gang member.
"We're here to ensure everything's in order and that you respect the boundaries," Erin said calmly.
Ryder met her gaze. "Really? Everything's fine here. We help others by running errands. We only sell drugs when necessary." The Ryder stated honestly.
"We even support kids who need clothing and other things," Ryder added.
Erin nodded, listening intently, pleased to hear that not all gangs were inherently evil. "Thank you for your time."
"Wait, can we grab a coffee sometime?" Ryder asked.
"No, thanks. I'm seeing someone," Erin said with a gentle smile, walking away with Antonio behind her.
Antonio approached the car, his gaze fixed on Erin. "What did that guy want?" he asked, motioning for her to enter.
Erin, having settled into the passenger seat, responded, "He asked me on a date." Her voice held a hint of indifference as she fastened her seatbelt.
"Did you accept?" Antonio asked, keen on ensuring her safety.
"No, I informed him I'm seeing someone," Erin replied with a casual shrug.
"Who is it?" Antonio pressed.
Erin shook her head, dismissing the question. Her personal life was not open for discussion outside of her and Justin. Besides, she wasn't even certain they were officially a couple, given Justin's uncertainty about their relationship status.
The thought of having scared Justin away after their hasty encounter weighed heavily on Erin's mind. She had panicked in the aftermath, fearing she had pushed him too far.
Erin's brow wrinkled as she checked her phone for any messages from Justin but found none. She wouldn't hold it against him if he chose to distance himself from her.
( With Justin)
Justin strolled through the park, stretching his legs after assisting some elderly people with their belongings, particularly the heavy items. Now, he ambled along, savoring the warmth of the air.
He reflected on his morning with Erin and their encounter. "Why on earth did we do that?" he pondered. "I mean, it was fantastic, but I should have declined, especially since she's still recovering."
Justin shook his head, recalling Erin asking him if they should be a couple. He wondered if she was merely attempting to talked him into having sex while she was still healing or if she harbored genuine feelings for him that she hesitated to express openly.
Nevertheless, he understood her desire to bring him joy.
"I only have a week left before returning to the military. I should persuade her to speak with me," Justin resolved. He cherished Erin deeply, but he refused to inflict pain on her or Erin to hurt herself simply to make him happy.
Justin sighed heavily, curious about what Henley had said to Erin that had led to her impulsive actions. The Erin he knew would have considered her options first.
He pulled out his phone and messaged Erin, "Hey, we need to talk about this morning." After sending the text, he paused to watch a couple frolicking.
His phone vibrated, and he retrieved it to read Erin's reply. "Okay, we can talk when I get off work. I also need advice on dealing with Jamie's return."
"Jamie?" Justin responded, confused. He didn't recall any Jamie from Erin's past, but he remembered her mentioning a half-brother named Teddy.
"She's my younger sister who ran off with Charlie, but ended up following him when Hank forced him out of Chicago."
Justin frowned at the mention of Charlie. "Let's discuss further when you get home. I prefer face-to-face conversations rather than texts.”
( Jay & Jamie )
As they traversed the secluded alleyways, Jamie and Jay engaged in a casual conversation. "So, tell me, how old are you?" Jay inquired, his gaze resting on Jamie.
Jamie averted her eyes, her blonde hair dancing in the wind. "Erin's 30, which makes me 26, almost 27," she replied.
"Ah, so you're a few years younger than Erin," Jay observed.
"What brought you back to Chicago? If you left Charlie, shouldn't you have returned when he did?" Jay questioned, seeking clarification.
Jamie shrugged indifferently. "I didn't come back with Charlie. I left him shortly after we left Chicago. I realized I could fend for myself," she explained. "I didn't feel worthy of Voight's protection. I was taught to rely solely on myself."
Jay nodded, a hint of concern in his voice. "Wasn't it lonely, being on your own?" he asked.
Jamie shrugged again. "Not really. I assisted those in need, and I have a two-year-old daughter," she said with a smile.
"A daughter? That's lovely." Jay smiled. "Are you married?" he asked, eliciting a chuckle from Jamie.
"Oh heavens, no." she replied. "Her father passed away in a car crash last year. We're together, but marriage was never on our minds."
Jay nodded, scanning his surroundings as they approached the gang. "I'm sorry to hear that," he said. "What's your daughter's name?" he inquired curiously.
"Elizabeth, but I call her Beth or Eliza." Jamie answered with a smile as she approached a cluster of men dressed in worn-out clothes.
( At Molly's)
Erin hesitated as she approached Molly's, where Justin had said they would meet. After a long absence, she felt awkward about facing him. However, she brushed off her reservations and paused at the entrance, contemplating whether to enter or contact Justin to suggest they go elsewhere.
Nervousness washed over her as she shifted her hands against her jeans. Glancing around, she observed people entering and exiting the bar. Her muscles tightened when an arm encircled her waist.
Erin let out a startled cry as her face pressed against a solid chest. Fear raced through her heart.
She shut her eyes tight, anticipating pain. However, a familiar voice whispered, "It's okay, Erin. It's only me."
When Erin recognized Kelly's voice, she pulled away. Looking up at him, she struck him hard in the chest, forcing him to release her. "You jerk!" she exclaimed, stepping back from her former boyfriend.
"Hey," Kelly said softly, his voice laced with gentle concern. He remembered the traumatic event that Erin had endured a few weeks ago, and his heart ached to see her so distraught.
Kelly stepped back, remorse etched across his face. "I'm so sorry, Erin," he apologized. "I wasn't thinking." His mind had been filled with the joy of seeing her again, and he had failed to consider her fragile state.
Erin shook her head, her guilt palpable. "It's okay, Kelly," she said, her voice trembling. "I'm sorry for overreacting. You just startled me. I should have been more aware of my surroundings."
"I understand," Kelly said, slowly drawing Erin into a hug. "But I should have warned you before I embraced you."
"It's true," Erin responded, her body relaxing slightly in his arms.
"Are you staying?" Kelly asked, his smile warm and inviting.
Erin nodded, her head nestled against his chest. "Yes, I'm actually meeting with Justin," she said, her voice tinged with a hint of hesitation.
Kelly chuckled, noticing the faint blush that crept across Erin's cheeks. "So, is Justin your new boyfriend?" he teased.
Erin looked away, her lie evident in the way her gaze flickered. "Ah...no," she murmured, her words barely audible as she walked away to hide her deception.
