Bronte has a guardian angel. She just doesn’t know it. And the guardian isn’t exactly an angel…
Setting: between end of episode 5x1 and the beginning of 5x2. A sort of missing moment.
Prompt: Keeping someone safe
p.s. This is one of the most beautiful titles I’ve ever found and I’m pretty proud for that ^^’
Reverse Cinderella
Joe’s POV
Reopening Mooney’s is probably the best decision you ever made and probably you also have to thank a little that weird girl who popped from nowhere.
The same girl to whom you just showed and gave the keys of this place.
You’re looking at her leaving the bookstore with the promise of seeing each other tomorrow, but you know better and will take precautions.
You can’t help recalling the second time you met here, when you found out she slept here, in your bookstore.
You would have even liked to stop that night outside the store and check if she was okay; but you had to check if Kate was okay, after what you had just done to her uncle.
According to her -more than explicit- request.
But now there’s no more murders to commit, Kate is more than fine, you two have never felt more connected than this.
That’s why there’s nothing wrong with what you plan to do tonight.
And bless God for inventing inventories.
After all, Mooney is about to be up and running soon, that's why inventories are needed in this delicate phase, that’s why Kate will understand if you tell her you need to stop here all night long.
Your absence won’t upset her, not that she has anything to worry about.
You have nothing to feel guilty for, you have the most innocent intentions.
---------------------------------------------
At least you came back home late afternoon and then had dinner with your wife and your son.
That's when you have told her about your plans for the night and she has agreed without blinking an eye.
And by eleven o’ clock you’re in front of Mooney’s, just hiding in a corner.
You are wearing a baseball cap and lurk in the shadows.
You are feeling like a sort of vigilante and you missed that for too long.
It doesn’t necessarily mean that something bad is going to happen tonight, but you are here, just in case.
You know this stake-out won’t be useless.
If you caught her last night sleeping in your bookstore, then be sure she’ll do it again.
You’ll pretend you didn’t know and when she feels like confessing it to you, you will act utterly dumbfounded.
But for now, just stick to your plan.
You don’t feel weird for doing that, you are perfectly aware she’s not someone yours, to protect.
You just don’t like the idea of her spending a whole night in such an isolated street.
Every street is isolated at night.
She could make bad encounters, she could be a prey to some aggressor.
She’s just a random person, you would do such a thing for anyone else.
Just think of her just like a sort of another Paco.
A grown-up. female version of him.
Very female.
You’ve been here for already an hour, you are starting to think that maybe you were wrong and she has a place to go, when your theories find corroboration.
Bronte arrives walking, probably from the closest underground station and you see her going to the back of the store.
You just smile.
Only this morning you gave her a copy of the keys, yet she chose to go inside from that shimmied window at the back.
Some habits die hard and maybe that’s why you haven’t fixed that window yet.
Funny that she arrived sharp at Midnight.
This makes her a sort of reverse Cinderella.
Cinderella leaves the castle before midnight, while Bronte sneaks through it.
Because Mooney’s is your castle and you’re Prince Charming, after all.
Every detail fits perfectly for that fairytale.
That doesn’t mean you and her will ever have a dance.
From the shutter you see the green lamp switched on and you smile again.
This means she doesn’t feel sleepy already.
Probably she will be up for reading, one of those books she likes to borrow so much.
You picture her wandering around the closed bookstore, undisturbed, tracing the edge of the shelves with her fingers, picking some books, reading some pages to see if it’s likely to interest her, and then putting it back, examining another one, her curiosity devouring her.
And, since you didn’t lock it, maybe she will also visit your private office, testing how comfortable your armchair is, caressing the fine wood of your desk, toying with the stuff you left there.
Just let Cinderella free to wander around the castle, do as she pleases.
After all, you know she can’t reach the dungeon of the castle.
And just like Cinderella left a trace of her with her crystal shoe, if tomorrow morning I found a book, a pen or whatever else not in the spot where it’s supposed to be, I would know for sure that she spent the night there, even if I wasn’t watching over her right now.
Usually, the idea of a stranger snooping around your things would annoy the hell out of you; but if it’s her, it just amuses you.
Somehow you find it even heartwarming.
Maybe because she doesn’t feel like a stranger to you.
And you don’t know why, you don’t want to figure out why.
You just want her to spend a quiet, good night.
That’s why you tense up when you see those three young guys who seem drunk as fuck approaching from afar until the rest against the shutter of Mooney’s as they talk very loudly as they keep pushing each other, not sure if it’s playfully or not.
You just don’t want them to scare her.
And just when you’re about to pop up from your hiding place, you see them moving on.
Good choice, motherfuckers.
Bring your stupid riot somewhere else.
It’s almost one’ o clock and everything seems quiet.
And the light is still on.
You should probably go back to your wife and maybe you’ll do it in a while.
You remember what happened last time she didn’t find you in her bed, late at night.
That’s why you thought about everything.
If she trusts you and doesn’t check, that’s good for her.
If she doesn’t and tracks the GPS on your phone, well, it means she will go for a nice ride across New York and nearby.
This might happen because, right before getting here, you casually stopped a taxi, went for a short ride and just as you paid the driver , you let your silenced phone slip, stuck beneath the driver’s seat, without him noticing.
That will teach her a lesson, speaking of snooping around.
Whether Kate checked on you or not, tomorrow you’ll have a funny story to tell about how you lost your mobile.
But in the meantime you already got a brand new one and there couldn’t be a better way to inaugurate it.
‘Hey, Bronte, this is Joe, hope I didn’t wake you up. Funny stuff happened and now I got a new phone number, I just wanted to let you know.’
Typed and sent.
Your brand new phone chimes a few seconds later.
You already know who it is.
‘Hey, Joe, don’t worry, I’m still up. Thanks for letting me know. See ya tomorrow. Goodnight and thanks again.’
And as you text her back, wishing her sweet dreams, you already know you can’t watch over her every night.
Your gaze goes up to those windows upstairs and maybe you have found the answer to the problem.
After a while, you see the green light switched off and you head back home, proud for what you did and what you’ll do.
Goodnight, Reverse Cinderella.

THE END
Ngl, I really wanted a missed scene like this in the episodes *O*
And okay, that never happened, but picturing Kate driving like mad at night around all New York and nearby was too funny as possibility! XD
Hope you found it cute, it would be nice to know… but at least thanks for reading, it already means a lot to me <3 .
See ya tomorrow.
