Episode 11: Not over yet
I have to talk to her. Now. This can’t wait. He shot up out of the chair and opened the door to his bedroom.
It was dark inside so he cautiously made his way over to the bed and felt around to try and find Claudia starting with the pillow. There was a slight depression where a head would have been, but nothing else. He felt down the length of the bed and still found nothing. Alarmed, he turned on the lights. Aside from himself, the room was empty.
“Claudia?” No response. He went out into the hallway to start a thorough search of Sanctuary. After nearly an hour of searching, he’d gone beyond worry and was well into frantic. He stood in the living room, trying to think of where she could possibly be. All of the cars were still in the garage, so she hadn’t taken one of those.
Kat wandered out, rubbing her eyes. Seeing Adam, she paused. “What’s wrong?”
“Claudia’s missing.”
Kat simply shrugged. “She’s gone back to Honor’s house.”
“When I last saw her, she couldn’t stand up, let alone walk. Honor’s house isn’t really all that close.”
“It is if you’re driving. Serenity nipped off with one of your cars earlier this evening and took her home. She’s still sleeping, but you can ask her yourself when she wakes up. I strongly recommend that you wait unless you want to have some really nasty dreams. I speak from experience.”
“You’re sure about this? Claudia’s safe?”
Kat shrugged. “I guess. She’s likely spoken to the police and had the bodies removed from the house and given them some story or another about what happened. Someone had to do it and its best that she takes care of it rather than letting Honor. She wouldn’t be able to handle it.”
“Why didn’t she say anything?”
“She didn’t want to make a scene. Besides, would you have let her leave?”
He sighed and sat down on the back of a couch. “You have a point.”
She sat down beside him. “Don’t worry, Adam. You’ll see her again.”
“You’re damn right I will.” He got up and headed for the rack that held the car keys. Kat followed him.
“Bad idea,” she warned. “Get some sleep, or try to anyways, and go in the morning. Honor will want to go back as well. What good could you do by going back tonight that can’t be done tomorrow?”
“I have to talk to her. I have to apologize.”
“So. You figured it out, did you? You know, she’s dealt with this for so long now that another few hours isn’t going to hurt. You won’t be much good if you don’t try and rest.” He looked he was going to protest, so she deliberately changed her eyes in the typical feral manner. “If you don’t go get some sleep, I will hit you hard enough to make sure you don’t wake up for a few hours. I’d pay good money to see you try and explain that.”
He sighed. “Fine. I’ll go lie down. I’d rather not have a bump on my head.”
Kat nodded. “Good. Now go back to your room and lie down. Read a good book or whatnot. I’ll see you in the morning.”
Adam turned around and headed back into his room and lay down on his bed with his head on the pillow even though he was wide awake. There was a faint scent on the fabric of the pillow case. He moved over a little to get a better whiff. It was a good smell and one he was well familiar with. He’d smelled it earlier when he was carrying Claudia. It smelled like lavender, her favorite flower. It calmed him somewhat. Alone now, he could admit to himself that Kat was right. He was exhausted and waiting a few more hours wouldn’t hurt. With that thought on his mind, he fell asleep before he could even change his clothes.
The next morning, Brennan walked into the dinning room looking like he hadn’t slept a wink all night. Shalimar and Emma both kept giving him strange looks, but they were nothing compared to the looks that the three of them were shooting at Jesse and Honor, never mind at Adam.
Jesse and Honor were sitting quite closely together, talking in low tones. He said something and she laughed, punching him in the shoulder. He pretended to be hurt, which on made her laugh harder. Adam, on the other hand, was pacing, stopping every few seconds to look at the clock.
“Adam is everything ok?” Brennan asked him, yawning.
“No, everything’s fine. Just eat your breakfast so we can get going.”
“Going? Where are we going?” Emma asked, startled.
“I don’t mean to rush, but I’m sure Honor would like to set a few things in order, decide what she’s going to do now.”
Judging from the looks on both of their faces, this was evidently something that neither Jesse nor Honor had given much thought to. The spoon fell from Honor’s limp fingers and she looked like she was on the verge of tears.
“Home,” was all she said.
Jesse placed a hand on her shoulder. “We’re all here for you. You know that, right?”
She nodded and rubbed her eyes. “I’ll go get dressed. I’ve lost my appetite.” She got up out of her chair and left the room.
The others immediately turned to Jesse. “So?” Emma asked, leaning her arms on the table.
“So what?” Jesse replied, applying himself to his food.
“What’s going on with you and Honor?” Shalimar asked, mimicking Emma’s posture.
“Yeah, you two a thing or what?”
Jesse chocked. “Is nothing sacred here?”
“Nope!” Emma smiled. “Not among teammates.”
“I really don’t need this,” Jesse started to say when Adam interrupted.
“We don’t have time for this,” he snapped, shocking them all. “I want you all ready to go and on board the Helix in half an hour.”
“What’s the rush?” Jesse asked, concerned.
“I already told you.”
“Sorry, Adam, but that’s just not good enough,” Brennan told him.
“Too bad.” Adam left the room, saying, “Half an hour!”
The four mutants turned to exchange a puzzled glance. “I wonder what his problem is,” Shalimar muttered.
“He’s agitated and anxious, but I didn’t get anything more than that,” Emma told them.
They ate as much of their breakfast as they could before getting up to go get dressed. As they left, Brennan looked around. “Hey, has anyone seen Claudia? Or even Kat or Serenity?”
They all shook their heads and admitted that it was a little strange. Maybe that was why Adam was so on edge. Jesse and Honor were the last ones to join them onboard the Helix where Adam was waiting impatiently. The instant they were all seated, he told them to take off and head back to Honor’s house.
Despite his earlier anxiety, Adam was strangely reluctant to leave the Helix and was the last one off. Honor was the first one off followed immediately by Jesse. The door was unlocked, so they went right in. There was a vast change in the house. All of the bodies had been removed. An attempt had been made to clean some of the blood off the walls and carpet. Not all of it was gone, but enough to make the house look clean. There was a faint sound of piano music, but no other signs of life.
Ignoring the music, Honor went upstairs. Adam stayed behind, but the others followed. She went into her room and sat down on her bed. Jesse joined her while the other three stood around them.
“So,” Emma said, clearing her throat. “This is it, huh?”
Honor nodded. “I have no idea what I’m going to do. I can’t live here anymore. First my parents, then my adoptive parents, and now the help who did nothing to deserve the ends they met. So many ghosts, so many bad memories. Right now, those ones are overpowering the good.”
Emma smiled and sat down on her other side. “That’s understandable. We won’t hold it against you.”
She smiled. “Thanks, Emma.”
“You know, we do have that extra space in Sanctuary,” Brennan reminded her. “You could come and stay with us for a while, or even for a long time. However long you need to find a new place.”
“I don’t know-“
Shalimar snorted. “It’s not imposing, if that’s what you were about to say. We’re inviting you to stay.”
“It’s not that. I’m grateful for the offer, but there are other concerns. Claudia, for one. She’s my friend and guardian. She takes care of me, helps me keep my mutation under control. As much as I’d love to live with more people like me, I can’t until I know what’s going on with her.”
“Fair enough.” Emma stood up and joined Brennan and Shalimar. We’ll just leave you to get things sorted out them.” They protested a little at being dragged out of the room.
Now that they were alone, Jesse turned to Honor. He looked hurt. “Why won’t you come stay with us?”
“Weren’t you listening? I have to sort everything else in my life out before I can.” Honor turned and took Jesse’s hands. “I want to live with more people like me. I want to be near you, but I can’t just yet.”
He sighed. “I hope that gets straightened out soon. I care about you a great deal, Honor.”
Her eyes softened a little as she let go of his hands and curled up with her head in his lap. “I like you, too.”
“Where will you stay while you’re doing that?”
“Here, I guess. It makes sense as it is my home, even though I can’t live here the way I used to. It wouldn’t feel right. My biggest problem is what to do with it.”
“You’ll think of something,” he assured her. “Would you like me to stay to keep you company?”
“You don’t have to.”
“I thought it might be nice to have someone around to keep the ghosts away.”
She thought about that for a moment. “Actually, that would be nice. Claudia’s nice and all, but she’s so consumed with the hatred of Adam that she isn’t the most sympathetic person.”
“I don’t suppose you could tell me what the story is there?”
“No. Even if I got you to promise not to, you’d be very tempted to go and tell Adam. He should figure it out for himself.”
“You know, and yet you seem to have no such urge.”
“You’re more familiar with him than I am. Until recently, I had no idea that this person she hated was him. Personally, I’m wondering how much she had to drink on the night in question. I’ve never seen her drink anything, as she claims it makes her head feel fuzzy, but it was a special night. It’s quite possible that she was also drunk and blew the whole incident out of proportion.”
“Interesting theory. Have you mentioned it to Claudia?”
“No. I enjoy living, thanks.”
He whistled. “She’d react that violently to it?”
She nodded and sat up. He wrapped his arms around her shoulders. “Yes, or I would have brought it up before.”
“Hmm.” He nuzzled the side of her neck. “You smell good.”
“You’re easily distracted, aren’t you?” she accused.
“You talk to much,” he whispered hoarsely. Their lips met as they fell to the mattress.
Adam followed the sound of the piano down the hallway that ended in a door that was partially opened. He slid it open a little more and peeked inside. It wasn’t a large room, but it was well-furnished with bookshelves lining its walls. Towards one end was a large piano. On the bench sat Claudia. There was a slightly pained look on her face as she played. He winced at the sight of her. Her wrist was on the mend, but it wasn’t completely healed yet and wouldn’t be for some time. He figured that she must be taking some very strong pain killers to be able to play the way she was playing.
It was a very sad and beautiful song. He’d never heard it before, but that didn’t really mean anything. It had been so long since he’d last heard her play. The last time would have been right before that last party they’d gone to. He’d told her that he’d pick her up from her parent’s house and take her there. He was a little early. When her mom had let him in, Claudia had been seated at her piano just goofing around with some very odd sounding chords. He remembered that she’d smiled when he walked up to her. As was typical for her, she had on a pair of dark purple pants that sat on her hips and a white shirt with long baggy sleeves that showed her navel and was slightly off the shoulder. She had also worn a long scarf made of transparent purple fabric around her neck. Her hair back then had been waist length and she always wore it loose.
As Claudia played, his mind went back, going over the events of that last party.
