On the ride back to the motel the brothers actually felt like talking. Their sour moods from earlier seemed to have been forgotten. Alice did have that affect on people. Although maybe it was the fact that the veil had been pulled back completely once and for all and the brothers had gotten a good look at exactly what it was they were dealing with. Whatever the reason, the atmosphere was much more pleasant. Hopefully it would stay that way.
It was actually Dean who had started the conversation, asking Liam questions about his brother. Liam answered, thankful that the topic didn’t brush on his father. That was a sensitive subject. What he’d told Dean while the man was disembodied, that was as far as he was willing to go on the matter. Then Liam asked his companions about what it was like to be brothers and in such close proximity to each other all the time. That led to stories being told about hunts. Like Sam had said, there was some close scrapes, but there were also a few rather comical moments.
As they pulled into the motel parking lot Dean was talking about one of the many prank wars they’d started. The story made Liam laugh so hard his sides hurt. It felt really good to laugh like that again. The three men entered the motel room to find it empty. No John, and no dead body. The brothers’ smiles turned to looks of worry. “We weren’t gone that long,” Dean said, crossing his arms and looking around the room as if he expected his dad to just suddenly appear again. “Maybe he just took the body to be nice and is having a hard time finding a place to dump it. We’ll wait until he gets back.”
Sam gave Dean a skeptical look, but only nodded as he lowered himself onto a bed. Liam shrugged and crawled into the other bed. “In that case, I’m getting a little shuteye.”
Dean moved to stand over the now sleeping vampire and just stared down at him with a thoughtful look. “Dean?” Sam raised an eyebrow at him.”
“Nothing, Sammy,” Dean said quickly, still not looking away. “Just trying to wrap my head around the fact that we’ve got a vampire sleeping in our room that according to some demons has a soul and really isn’t a bad guy... for a vampire.”
“Me too,” Sam gave his brother a little smile, but was suspicious that there was a little more to it on Dean’s end.
Liam was shaken awake about two hours later. “Rise and shine!” Dean said to him.
Liam groaned and his eyes fluttered open. “Is your dad back?”
“Nope,” Sam answered. “And we have to face the fact he’s not coming back. The stubborn jackass we call Dad has apparently decided it’s best for us if he takes all the demon heat on himself and he left us... again.”
“Now we have to decide what we’re going to do about it,” Dean explained.
“There’s nothing we can do, Dean!” Sam snapped. “If the past year has taught us anything, it’s that if he doesn’t want to be found, he won’t be.”
“But with a fresh trail this time...” Dean argued, looking a little frazzled.
“Oh, so there’s a trail?” Sam raised an eyebrow at his brother.
“Well, not really, but...”
“Look, all we can really do is leave him to his own devices and trust that he’ll get in contact again when he feels like it. I say we go see Bobby’s contact in Memphis. We’ve kept Liam waiting long enough.”
Liam listened to the conversation. Clearly there was some daddy issues on both sides, and the vampire was not eager to get in the middle of that. When the subject of going to Memphis was brought up he perked. “Yeah, let’s do that,” he urged.
Dean’s shoulders dropped a little. “You’re right,” he finally admitted. “And yeah, we did promise you, didn’t we?” he turned to Liam. “I guess it’s time we quit yapping and actually put our money where our mouths are. Sammy, did Bobby give you a number to go with that address?”
“Umm...” Sam looked around trying to remember where he’d put the scrap of paper. “I don’t remember, but I think the paper is out in the car.”
“If there is a number, call it and tell them we’re on our way. I don’t wanna just show up at someone’s house. It’ll take us... maybe eight hours to get there.”
Sam nodded and headed out to the car. Liam started gathering his things. Excitement buzzed through him because he was getting ever closer. If Alice was right and he needed someone who loved him romantically to get his humanity back, well, that certainly put a big snag in things. He had no one special in his life. Of all the years he’d been around there had only been Jason, and that was what, eighty years ago now? But that was just the spell Jason had found. Maybe this professor person would know of another one.
Sam came back in just as Liam was finally ready to go. “I spoke to some woman named Natalie, the professor’s daughter I guess. She said they’d be waiting for us, and her dad is anxious to meet Liam.”
“Anxious to meet me?” Liam’s brows furrowed.
“Yeah,” Sam nodded. “Like you told that nurse in the hospital, you’re really weird. I guess his interests lie in weird things.”
“Let’s get this freak show on the road,” Dean said as he grabbed the cooler of blood and headed out to the car.
Liam grabbed his bag and draped himself in the comforter before following. He was getting pretty adept at manoeuvring around parking lots under the blanket. He didn’t know if that should worry him or not. Sam got into the passenger seat, and Liam slid into the back. Dean fired up the engine and off they went.
The brothers weren’t in chatty moods anymore, but Liam guessed it had something to do with them both being worried about their father. Liam was used to silence out of them anyway. He just dug through his bag for his headphones and plugged them into his phone to listen to his own music while he watched the scenery fly by. They made one pit stop about halfway there so the humans in the group could get some food and take a bathroom break. Liam stayed in the car, taking the opportunity for a snack of his own out of one of the coolers. He was so sick of the taste of blood. When the brothers came back they had the smell of burgers on them and it smelled delicious. If only he wasn’t limited to just one thing.
A little over eight hours later they were pulling up the long driveway of a white plantation style house with a quaint looking porch covered roof. Light was coming from one of the downstairs front windows suggesting that they were still up and waiting despite the late hour. All three men got out of the car and made their way up to the door. Sam reached to press the doorbell.
A few minutes later a woman that looked to be in her early twenties with flaming red long curly hair and bright gray eyes answered the door. “You must be the Winchesters,” she gave them a welcoming smile.
“We are,” Sam answered. “And you must be Natalie.”
“Guilty as charged. My, you sounded handsome over the phone, but your voice didn’t do you justice,” she flirted a little with the younger brother, causing him to blush slightly. “Come on in,” she stepped back. “My father is waiting for you in his study. Down the hall to the end on the left.”
“Thanks,” Dean flashed her a charming smile and the three of them walked to the study.
The room was dimly lit and cozy looking with a fireplace on the far wall with a slowly dying fire. To the left was a large bookcase full of books along the wall. To the right was a man with white hair that looked to be maybe in his fifties sitting at a bulky desk by the window. “Welcome, gentleman,” he greeted them. “You must be Bobby’s friends, the Winchesters.”
“With a vampire in tow, yes,” Dean nodded and took a seat in one of the padded wooden chairs. “Sorry for the late hour.”
“It’s really not a bother,” the man assured them. “I’m Professor Patrick Lockhart. I hear you’ve got yourself a vampire that wants his humanity back.”
“Yes, Sir,” Liam swallowed hard, taking a seat beside Dean. Sam sat down on the other side of his brother.
Patrick rose from his char and moved over to Liam, staring with wonder in his eyes. “Forgive me, but why do you want so badly to be human again? Every other vampire I’ve ever heard of shed its soul and was quite content to live under the moonlight. And when they do tire of it, they seek death.”
“I don’t want this, never did,” Liam answered honestly. “Ever since the day I rid myself of my sire I’ve sought a way to fix things. While I’ve considered death, there are so many things I want to experience again. It’s taken me a very long time to get this far. Please tell me you can help me.”
Patrick returned to his chair. “As it so happens, I think I can. It took a lot of digging mind you, but it seems there is one spell that can give you what you seek. You wouldn’t happen to have a romantic partner would you?”
Liam sighed and his shoulders and head dropped. It was the same spell Jason had found. If only his former lover hadn’t let fear stop him from going through with it... “No.”
“Don’t let that discourage you,” Patrick gave him a kind smile. “Here.” he held out a slip of paper to Sam. “It’s probably going to take you a little while to gather the rest of the ingredients anyway. Maybe you can get yourself on one of those dating websites or something. A man as handsome as you shouldn’t have trouble.”
“Yeah, I can take you to a bar or something, find you a good looking guy since that seems to be what you like, and you can work your charm,” Dean winked at him.
Sam looked over the ingredient list. “Most of this stuff shouldn’t be too hard to get. I think we even already have like half of it. The Chalice of Restoration won’t be easy to track down, and will probably be next to impossible to get... And an Act of God? What does that even mean?”
“Sometimes when lightning strikes sand the sand melts and forms a shard of glass. That is probably what you’re looking for,” Patrick explained.
“Oh,” Sam nodded. “I can probably track one of those down too.”
Everything was coming together for Liam. He still needed a romantic partner, but Alice said she was sure that little problem would work itself out. Exactly how the vampire didn’t know, but he had to have faith. Then with Patrick, Sam, and Dean all working diligently to help him, well, he couldn’t quite find the words to express how he felt. Instead he showed them by grabbing Dean’s shirt and pulling him in for a kiss. He held it several seconds longer than he needed to because Dean’s lips on his, their bodies so close together, well, it just felt so good. What really surprised him though was the barely audible sound of a moan of unfiltered pleasure that came from Dean. Liam pulled back and Dean instantly took a wild swing at him. The vampire’s quick reflexes allowed him to duck out of the way. Dean stormed off straight back out to the car. “Sorry...” Liam shrugged. “Man of action...” Then he moved over to a dumbfounded looking Sam and kissed him too, but only a quick one.
The sound of the Impala’s engine could be heard roaring to life along with Dean driving off. “Umm...” Sam just kind of stared out the window, wondering what they were going to do now.
“Naturally, you’ll stay here tonight,” Patrick said as if he could read Sam’s mind. “That was the plan anyway since you were going to be arriving so late. Sam, if you’re hungry, my daughter has food waiting in the kitchen. Once you are finished eating she will show you both to your rooms. And Liam, feel free to make yourself at home until sunrise. Now, if you’ll excuse me, the hour is quite late, and I do have a class in the morning.” The elder gentleman gave them a little nod and headed to his own room.
Natalie was waiting for them to lead them to the kitchen. She served up meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy. Sam and Liam sat at a little kitchen table, and all Liam could do was watch longingly as Sam gobbled the food down like a starving man. “Boy, you sure must like my meatloaf,” Natalie commented.
“It’s not often I get to eat that good,” Sam said as he took his cleaned plate to the sink. “Usually it’s just whatever we can grab quick at a fast food joint or a greasy diner.”
Natalie smiled and moved the plate and silverware to the dishwasher. “If you gentleman will follow me, I will take you to your rooms now.” She led them up the stairs into a dark hallway, stopping a few doors down. “Sam, you’ll sleep here,” she pointed to a room. “Liam, your room is across the hall.”
“Where’s the bathroom?” Sam asked. “I could really go for a bath before I turn in.” Natalie pointed to a door a little ways behind them. “I could really use clean clothes too, but someone drove off with our stuff...”
While Sam went to the bathroom for a bath Natalie went back downstairs and Liam followed her into a little sitting room with a TV. “Mind if I join you?” Liam asked when she sat on the sofa and flipped the TV on.
“Not at all, if that’s what tickles your fancy.”
Liam sat beside her and stared at the late night talk show on the screen. “You’re not going to bed?”
“No,” she shook her head. “I’m a natural night owl anyway.”
Dean returned three hours later. Natalie turned to Liam. “You might want to make yourself scarce. I don’t think he’s going to want to see you just yet.”
“Yeah,” Liam agreed with a sigh. “I’ll be in my room.”
Just as Liam was gone Dean knocked on the door. Natalie answered, and was hit by the stench of booze. “You’re drunk!” she put her hands on her hips.
“You’ve got good powers of observation,” Dean said, his words a little slurred as he entered the house.
“Follow me,” she ordered and led him into the kitchen. She motioned for him to sit at the table and she grabbed a plate out of the fridge, putting it in the microwave. Once it was ready she put the steaming plate of food and a fork in front of him. He began to eat mechanically and she sat beside him. She waited for him to finish and take his plate to the sink before saying anything. “Alright, let’s talk now.”
“Talk about what?” Dean looked confused.
“About what had you running off to a bar like that,” she shot him a stern look.
“It was nothing,” Dean insisted, lowering himself back into the chair.
“Didn’t look like nothing. Look, I know that kiss, innocent as it was, really affected you and-”
“Lady,” Dean cut her off. “I don’t mean for this to sound rude, but before you continue there’s something you should know. Emotions and I, we don’t play nice.”
“I can see that,” Natalie said as she propped her elbow on the table and rested her chin in her hand. “Was it just the kiss, or the dream too?”
Dean stared at her like she’d suddenly turned as green as her sundress. “How the hell do you know about that?” he snapped.
She gave him a smug little smile. “I’m a mind reader. Your brain was screaming as you stormed out of here. Here’s the gist of what I get. Something’s happening, something shifted in your world, and you’re scared.”
“Yeah, well...” he shifted a little in his seat, clearly uncomfortable with this conversation. “When something of that magnitude shifts inside your brain, it’s a little scary.” He didn’t even know why he was talking this openly with someone he’d just met. He didn’t even talk like this with his own brother unless Sam kept harping until it was dragged out of him.
Natalie gave him a little understanding nod. “But you’re going to have to come terms with it eventually. You can’t keep finding reasons to take a step back from him and lashing out like you have been. It’s not fair to either of you.”
“Have you been reading his mind?”
“His is the only mind I can’t read. I can’t read monsters.”
“Hey, at least his thoughts are safe... You don’t understand, Natalie, my whole fucking world has drifted into dangerous territory. He’s a monster. I should’ve killed him the day we met him, but my brother... damn bleeding heart... If I rationalize an exception for one monster, what’s to stop it from snowballing until eventually I’m rethinking hunting all together? I’m a hunter, killing monsters is what I know, but this...”
Natalie moved her hand to place it on top of Dean’s. “He’s different from what you hunt and you know it. He’s a monster in definition only. While I can’t read it, from what interaction I’ve had with him I’m pretty sure his mind is human.”
“And I don’t know how to handle that,” Dean admitted. “A human mind and soul in a vampire’s body, that just doesn’t fucking make sense! I believe in what I can see, and I see it right in front of me, but I can’t wrap my head around it. And that dream, this freak attraction, please tell me it’s a vampire thing I didn’t know about.”
Natalie chuckled softly. “While I have to admit that he is a beautiful and striking creature, I’m afraid I don’t think that’s what has you in a twist.”
“But I like women!”
She shrugged. “Human sexuality isn’t always so cut and dried. Maybe you’re bisexual and didn’t know it?”
He ran a hand over his face in frustration. “I’ve never even looked twice at a guy before. Now I’m having sex dreams about one that also happens to be a vampire, which I’ve been taught my whole life to hate and kill. See what a mind fuck this is?”
“I empathize with your pain. However, you’re going to have to change how you deal with it. You’re also going to have to decide what you want quickly. Now that he knows it’s the barrier between him and what he wants so badly, he’s going to be looking for love.”
“I know. While I was in the hospital he put his head on my leg to take a nap. It was actually kinda nice to feel the touch of another person. Hunting, while it has its rewards, companionship isn’t one of them. But I... I don’t know... Then there’s Sam and Dad. If I told them anything I’ve told you they’d probably have me carted off to the loony bin.”
“I don’t know about your father, but Sam already suspects you’re hiding something. I think he just wants you to be happy though. Sam at least will come around.”
Dean nodded. “I guess. This little chat has been good for getting things off my chest, but if you don’t mind, I’m really exhausted and I have a lot to think about.”
“Of course, Dean. Follow me.”
