A week later Dean was pushing Liam through Natalie’s door in a wheelchair. “You good, Babe? Want me to put you on the couch?”
“Yeah,” Liam nodded. “I could go for watching some TV.”
Dean picked him up and carried him to the couch, carefully setting him down. “Here you go. And here’s your remote,” he said picking up the clicker and handed it over. “Need anything else? A drink maybe?”
“I’m fine,”
“You keep saying your fine, but you don’t seem like it. You’ve been really quiet again, and that is really unlike you.”
“I just… I just hurt, okay?”
Dean leaned down to press his forehead to his mate’s. “Liam, I am so sorry you got hurt. Believe me, I blame myself for it everyday since it happened. If I had just done something a little differently...”
Liam sighed and shook his head. “I’m not angry at you, I’m just really angry. I knew the risk I was taking, Dean, and so did you. It’s just not something you think will actually happen until it does. I went from something strong, fast, and capable to a fucking invalid. I can’t even get up to take a piss by myself anymore!”
“But you will again,” Dean stroked his hair. “The doctor said the surgeries went better than expected. And you’re gonna take that anger and the determination I know is in you, and when you heal up you’re gonna apply it to your physical therapy. You’re gonna be good as new, and you’re gonna kick some serious ass like you always have. You got that? With all those screws in you, you might not be able to get through airport security any time soon, but… I know you, and you’re gonna be fine. Your the strongest person I’ve ever met.”
He looked up when Natalie and Sam came in. “Natalie, I can’t thank you enough for financing having my boyfriend put back together and taking care of him like this.”
Natalie smiled. “Dean, you’ve already thanked me so many times I’ve lost count. I consider Liam my friend. He was injured in the line of duty, he deserves to be taken care of like any soldier. I know the general public has no clue what you guys do for them, but this is my way of saying I know and I really appreciate it.”
“But Natalie, you just forked over thirty five thousand dollars like nothing,” Sam sighed. “You’re paying for physical therapy, which is probably another few thousand. You also hired a private nurse to help take care of him. I’m not entirely sure how much that is, but it can’t be cheap. I’m not saying I’m not grateful here, but I don’t want you to bankrupt yourself either.”
“Sam, I told you it’s not a problem,” she looked up at him with a little smirk. “I had a bunch of old family money lying around that I put to a worthwhile use is all.”
“Wait,” Sam looked a little stunned. “Are you telling me you’re rich?”
“My family is what some people would call loaded, yes,” she answered.
“And you’re just telling me this now because why?”
“Why do you think?” She sighed and moved to sit down by Liam’s feet. “I didn’t want you guys to cozy up to me for my money. I often don’t tell people that don’t know right away for that very reason. I wanted to get to know you three, see what kind of men you really were and how you were toward me when you thought I didn’t have hundreds of millions of dollars.”
“Understandable,” Dean nodded. “And I guess we passed your test since you’re telling us now. Did you really say hundreds of millions of dollars?”
“I did,” she nodded. “So don’t you worry about money anymore. Let me and my accountants worry about that. Just keep doing what you do.”
Sam looked confused. “But last time we were here you were saying you were having trouble with the mortgage.”
“I know, and I’m sorry I lied to you. I just wanted to see if you would still love me if you thought I was a little on the poor side and wouldn’t be able to help you much anymore.”
“Natalie, you should’ve already realized I don’t care about money. I mean, Dean and I, up until now we’ve been living stolen credit card to stolen credit card. All money is to me is the difference between having food in my stomach and a bed to sleep in or not.”
“Which reminds me, I aim to put a stop to that stolen credit card thing.” She got up and went over to a little desk in the hall, pulling out a credit card. “Here,” she handed it to him. “All yours, and it’s not stolen.”
Sam stared at it with his jaw on the floor for a minute before trying to give it back. “Natalie, this is really too much.”
“You saying that is exactly why I’m insisting you take it,” she pushed it back toward him. “Sam, you told me things about your life, about not always having food in your stomach or a bed to sleep in. Like it or not I consider you three family now. If one of you needs something I am going to see that you get it.” She lovingly ran a hand through Sam’s hair. “I’ve come to love you guys, you especially, and I just want to see that you’re taken care of. Can you just let me have that?”
Sam nodded and kissed her. “Seriously, did that rabbit’s foot fall back into my pocket without me realizing it?”
“Rabbit’s foot?” Natalie looked confused. “Oh, you mean that cursed one? No, this isn’t luck. This is you getting what’s really coming to you for all you’ve sacrificed for everyone else.”
Sam put the card in his wallet. “Seriously, I’m going to wake up any minute in some jail cell, I know it.”
She smiled at him. “Then we’d better get you some place comfortable. Come on, let’s go watch TV in our bedroom and leave Dean and Liam to have a little private time too.”
“Okay, you go up and I’ll be right behind you.” Sam turned to Dean when she was gone and shook his head. “Can you seriously believe this?”
“Dude, and I thought I had hit the jackpot when I saw Liam’s bank account,” Dean smirked. “But you… oh man!”
“Dean, she is not a walking bank account! I am not with her because of money I didn’t even know she had until a few minutes ago.”
“I know,” Dean nodded. “She’s an awesome woman, and if I didn’t have Liam here I’d be a regular green eyed monster.”
“Go ahead and be a green eyed monster,” Liam huffed. “You got a lump of nothing now.”
“Liam, stop!” Dean cried. “Didn’t I just tell you you’re gonna get better?”
“Yeah, but you’re not gonna have sex with anyone but yourself for months.”
“So what?” Dean leaned in to kiss Liam’s forehead. “You are so much more to me than sex. I mean, sex is fucking fantastic, but I’m just thrilled you’re still alive. When that demon implied that he killed you, I was losing my mind. The relief that flooded me when I felt your pulse, words cannot describe it. What I need you to do now is shake off this funk and be you again. You may not have your legs right now, but your brain still works. It’s the very brain that figured out how to get the Colt to work again. As long as you’re still breathing everything is great.”
“Yeah, and you heard Natalie,” Sam chimed in. “She’s gonna take great care of you. Anyway, I’m gonna go join her and spend some time with her.”
Liam sighed deeply as Sam left. “Dean, can you bring me a cup of tea?”
“I can most certainly do that.” He got up and came back a few minutes later with a big cardboard box containing all the tea Liam had bought. “Just pick which one you want.” Liam dug through the box and eventually handed Dean a small black canister. “Ah, chocolate chai, excellent choice. Be right back.”
Liam’s nurse came just before dinner. She was a middle aged black woman named Martha. Her hair was tied back in a bun and she wore pale blue scrubs with daisies on the top. She stood by him at dinner. “Liam, what do you want to drink?” she asked.
He glared at her. “I’m in a wheelchair, I’m not a fucking helpless infant,” he snapped at her and maneuvered his wheelchair over to the fridge to get himself a drink.
Dean pulled Martha aside. “Don’t take it personal,” he told her. “He really is a very sweet guy, he’s just also a stubborn ass that’s been in a very foul mood since the accident.”
“I get it,” she nodded. “All of my patients were healthy and independent people before they got old or something happened to them. What he’s going through is very common. He’s frustrated that his body doesn’t work the way it used to. Don’t worry, I never take it personally.”
“God damn it, I can’t reach the glasses!”
“Here,” Martha ran over to Liam and reached up into the cupboard to grab a glass for him. “Liam, I know you’re not an infant, honey, but my job is to see to your needs. Dean, honey, can you take him back to the table while I get him some apple juice.”
“Sure thing,” Dean nodded and wheeled him back over to his plate. Liam huffed and grabbed a fork to push his rice around the plate. “Easy there, tiger,” Dean whispered into his ear.
Martha brought the glass of juice over to him. “Thanks,” he mumbled, taking a drink.
“Oh, looks like you peed. Be right back, I’ll just go empty your bag quick.” She grabbed the bag and took it to the bathroom.
Dean sighed. “Liam, I know you’re pissed. We gamble with our lives every day we’re on the job. A week ago your luck went a little south. I can’t rewind time and fix that. This sucks, I’ll give you that. When I said be you I didn’t mean be a major jackass. Martha is here to help you until you get back on your feet. Let her do that, okay? Relax and enjoy being a little pampered for a while. Now eat.”
Liam grumbled under his breath and started on his pork roast. A few hours later he was watching TV when he huffed. “What’s wrong now?” Dean asked.
“I have to… you know...”
“Go to the bathroom? Okay, come on.”
Dean started to get up but Martha motioned for him to sit. “I’ll get him, honey, that’s what you’re paying me for.”
She wheeled him over to the bathroom and helped him onto the toilet. “This is so fucking humiliating,” he grumbled while shaking his head.
“I know it feels that way,” Martha said sympathetically. “But honey, you were investigating a damaged property for your job and you fell through the floor. It happens. I see stuff like this a lot, and I’m a nurse, so I’m very familiar with the human body and how it works. You really don’t need to feel humiliated for needing help. You need to concentrate on getting back to the point where you don’t need me anymore. I know it’s the opposite for every other job, but the best part of my job when I’m working for a young guy full of piss and vinegar like yourself is when I’m no longer needed.”
Liam nodded and finished his business. She took him back to the sitting room until he was ready for bed. Natalie had a stair lift installed and another wheelchair upstairs so they could get him up there and into bed. “Alright,” Martha sighed when he was settled in. “See you in the morning, Liam,” she said before going home.
In the morning Dean got Liam dressed and downstairs for breakfast. “Before Martha gets here, any news on the omen front?” he asked Sam.
“No,” Sam shook his head. “No omens, but there might be a werewolf in Maple Springs, New York. Three guys were visciously attacked at a construction site, and there is one survivor. The lunar cycle is right for it.”
“Think we should go check it out?” Dean asked while nibbling a sausage.
“Yeah, I think so,” Sam nodded.
They finished eating and packed up. Martha came just before they left. “Leaving, boys?” she asked.
“Yeah,” Sam nodded. “Massive water damage up in New York. Our job keeps us really busy, so I don’t know when we’ll be back.”
“Okay, I’ll see you. Be careful though. I don’t want my patient load doubled or tripled.”
“Yeah,” Sam gave a little chuckle. “We will.”
Dean went to say goodbye to Liam while Natalie followed Sam out to the porch. “You got the credit card I gave you?” she asked.
“Yeah,” Sam nodded. “But I still really think it’s too much.”
She handed him an envelope full of cash. “I want you two fed without having to steal. If it helps, think of me as your boss, this envelope as your pay, and the credit card as a job benefit.”
Sam grinned and shook his head as he took the cash. “So, I guess that means I’m sleeping with my boss. Is that a job perk too?”
“For you it is. You’re my favorite,” she smirked as she leaned up to kiss him. “I love you, Sam. Please be careful.”
“Well, I’m ready to go,” Dean sighed as he came out. “Liam is extra pissy since he doesn’t get to come, so have fun with that.”
“Oh, I’m sure we’ll have a ball,” Natalie said as she gave Sam one last hug before they left.
Liam had his first physical therapy appointment that afternoon. His bones weren’t quite healed yet, so they just did some simple movement exercises to keep up his muscle tone and flexibility. It hurt like hell, but Liam had decided Dean was right. He needed to pour all of his determination into getting back into fighting shape.
When he was in bed Dean called. “Hey, Babe, how’d therapy go?” Dean asked when he picked up.
“Painful. Don’t really wanna talk about it. Did you kill the werewolf?”
“This is gonna sound crazy, but it wasn’t a werewolf. It was the spirit of a girl.”
“A spirit?” Liam raised an eyebrow. “I’ve never heard of a spirit looking like a werewolf attack before.”
“Me either, it was really freaky. Apparently this poor girl’s stepmother poisoned her with bleach when she was eight years old. She was in a coma in the hospital, and her dad, who happened to be a doctor there, would sit and read her fairy tales. Because no one knew the truth, I guess her spirit got frustrated and angry, and somehow she was making fairy tales come to life. The construction site was ‘The Three Little Pigs’. Anyway, while I was off playing the huntsman in ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, Sam had a little chat with the dad and got him to see what was going on. Once he knew the truth the girl was able to move on. I kinda feel for him, but at least innocent people aren’t getting hurt now.”
“Yeah, you did good again. I only wish I had been able to help. But, give me a few months. I’ll be kicking ass with the best of them again.”
“There’s the spirit I know and love.”
“Yeah,” Liam sighed. “I guess I could only wallow in self pity for so long. Self pity doesn’t suit me temperament wise.”
“No, it doesn’t. Anyway, get some rest. I love you,”
“Love you too. Goodnight.”
The phone rang again in the morning. Liam groaned and picked it up. It was Dean again. “Hello?”
“Oh, thank god you’re still breathing.”
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
“My genius brother went and summoned the crossroads demon to try and get me out of the deal. Then he shot her. I was just worried that maybe since he tried to wiggle me out of it your life might’ve gotten taken back.”
“Nope, still alive, but maybe that’s the problem.”
“Liam, don’t go there. Look, you saved Sam’s life twice now. You figured out how to get the Colt working again. I think my investment has paid for itself.”
“So, just like that, I live and you die? I heard you talking to that demon, asking what hell was like. You’re not even going to try and get out of that deal, are you?”
Dean sighed. “If it’s me or you, I, without hesitation or regret choose me. I know it was selfish, but you’re just going to have to deal with that. After everything I’ve done I think I deserve to be a little selfish. I get about another nine months to watch you enjoy your life, and I’m happy with that.”
“Yeah, except I just pissed in a bag because I can’t get up.”
“Temporary set back, Babe. You’ll come back from it. If anyone can do that, you can. And when I’m gone you and Sam will just keep hunting without me. I didn’t think it was possible when I first met you, but you’re better at it than me anyway. You and Sam, you’re both stronger than I am.”
“What if I’m not, Dean? How would you like it if I decided to be selfish? I know you left a gun in the nightstand drawer. I can reach it from the bed.”
“Liam, don’t you fucking dare even think it. I love you more than my own life. I left that there for you to protect yourself just in case, not so you could… Anyway, we’re headed out to Sea Pines, Massachusetts now. If nothing pops up after we finish that case we’re coming home for a little while. When I get there your ass had better be still alive.”
“What’s in Sea Pines?”
“Some woman drowned her shower. I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t sound normal to me.”
“No, sounds like a spirit. Anyway, yes, I’m still alive. I won’t keep you any longer. Love you.”
“Love you too, Babe, so very much. Bye.”
Liam hung up the phone and sighed. “Natalie!” he called out, hoping she could hear him.
A few minutes later she came in the door. “Good morning, Liam. What do you need?”
“Out of this bed and into the bathtub.”
“Sorry, sweetie,” she frowned. “I can’t lift you. You’ll have to wait for Martha to come back. She should be here soon. Is there anything you want while you wait?”
“Nope,” Liam sighed. “I’ll just stare at the ceiling some more.”
Natalie shook her head and left. Liam got it into his head to try and get out of bed himself. People in wheelchairs did stuff like that all the time, right? It couldn’t be that hard. He scooted to the edge of the bed and tried to reach for the wheelchair to pull it close enough. He ended up reaching too far and fell with a loud thud. Natalie raced back in. “You stubborn idiot!” she chided him. “What the hell do you think you were trying to do?”
“What billions of people do every day,” he answered from the floor. “Get out of bed.”
“Are you hurt?”
“No more than I was before, except maybe my pride.”
“Well, you’re damn lucky your pride is the only thing that’s hurt. I was gonna be nice and bring you breakfast in bed, but now you’re stuck on the floor for a little while.”
It was about another half hour before Martha got there. “We’re gonna have our hands full with that one,” Natalie said to her as she answered the door. “He tried to get out bed bed himself, and now he’s on the floor.”
Martha rushed up to him. “You shouldn’t have done that, honey. Patience is a virtue. Here, before I move you, let me check you out.” She examined his legs closely for any sign of further injury. “Alright, you look okay to me. Now, what were you trying to do that couldn’t wait?”
“I just wanted to get into the bathtub,” Liam sighed.
“Okay, honey.” She said as she picked him up and got him into the wheelchair. “We’ll get you a bath, then get some breakfast into you. I think I’m gonna talk to Natalie then about me moving in here until you’re better. With your boyfriend gone a lot of the time I think maybe you need round the clock care.”
“You don’t have to do that.”
“Honey, taking care of people who need it is what I do. Natalie is right, your stubborn behind is gonna be a handful.”
She got him into the bathroom and stared running the water. Then she helped him take off his pajamas and get in. She helped him get his hair washed, then patted him on the shoulder. “I’ll give you some privacy to get the rest of you washed, but holler if you need anything. Don’t be pulling anymore stunts trying to do things for yourself that you can’t anymore.”
Liam let out a deep sigh when she left, just soaking in the hot water for a minute before starting to wash. He hollered for her when he finished and she got him out and sat him on the toilet to dry him off. “Why’d you decide to become a home healthcare nurse?” he asked her curiously.
“Well, right when I graduated high school one of my aunts got cancer. She didn’t have any close family of her own, so I volunteered to move in with her and take care of her. I found that I got a lot of satisfaction out of seeing that she was kept as comfortable as possible. So, when she died I enrolled myself in nursing school because I decided that taking care of people was what I wanted to do.”
“Sorry about your aunt.”
“Thanks, honey, but that was a long time ago.”
“What did you want to do before your aunt got sick?”
“I wanted to be a journalist. Yeah, I was the editor of my high school newspaper. I thought that was my passion then, but this turned out much better anyway.”
“So, you actually care about me, a person who until two days ago was a total stranger to you?”
“Of course I do. You’re a human being that had a really bad accident. You deserve to be cared for as much as anyone else.”
He gave her a small smile as she started drying his hair. “You know, it’s funny, a little while ago my boyfriend had a weird dream that I was a nurse in. I think the job would actually suit my personality.”
“Then why didn’t you do that instead?”
Liam shrugged. “I just kind of fell into what I do now. I had a boyfriend a little while back that did it and he got me started. I wanted to travel with him. Then I met Dean and he did it too, so I figured why the hell not...”
“I see, so you let the men in your life dictate things.”
“When you put it that way, I guess I do.”
“Do you have any family to speak of?”
“Nope, all dead,” Liam answered honestly. “My mother died the day I was born. From what I was told, she hemorrhaged when my umbilical cord detached, and they couldn’t stop her from bleeding to death. When I was sixteen my father went fishing and had an accident and drowned. My brother took care of me until I was eighteen, then he died from a stroke. That’s when I met Jason, and he took care of me after that. But he was older, and he had a massive heart attack last year.”
“Oh, honey, I’m sorry,” Martha frowned as she wrapped him in a towel and put him back into the wheelchair to take him to the bedroom. “Sounds like you’ve had it rough. No aunts, uncles, or cousins around to help you out?”
Liam shrugged. “They’re all back in Ireland and I’ve never met them. I guess the families didn’t approve of my parents getting together, so they got together anyway and moved here.”
“Ireland, huh? You don’t have an accent that I can tell.”
Liam shrugged again. “I used to have a little bit of one when I was little. But then I went to school and started being around people that didn’t have one, and along the way I guess I lost it.”
“You ever think about going to Ireland someday and looking up the rest of your family?”
“I have. It’s expensive though, and I guess I’ve just been so busy with life. Maybe someday. I don’t know if they’d want to see me though since I’m a product of a union they didn’t approve of.”
“Honey, you’re still blood to them,” she said as she grabbed some clothes and started dressing him. “If I had a long lost cousin in another country I’d want to get to know them, especially if they were as nice as you. Now that you’ve tossed aside the attitude I can see what a good guy you are.”
“Yeah, sorry about that,” Liam frowned and looked out the window for a moment. “I guess I just really don’t like being damn near helpless now.”
“Nobody does,” she gave him a small smile. “Let’s get you downstairs and get you some breakfast. I’m sure you’re hungry by now.”
While he sat at the table with a bowl of oatmeal Martha did talk to Natalie about moving in. Natalie agreed that after that morning’s stunt it might be best.
Two more days passed, and while Liam sat munching a turkey sandwich at lunch time the Impala pulled into the driveway. Natalie ran out to greet Sam. Dean came in and dropped his things in the sitting room before finding Liam in the kitchen, leaning down to hug him tight. “God, I missed you!” he said as he kissed Liam.
“I missed you too. Hey, how did Massachusetts go?”
“Massachusetts?” Martha raised an eyebrow. “Are you two the only investigators the company has for the whole country or something?”
Dean shrugged. “We’re the best I guess, so we get sent on all the tough cases. They work us like dogs. So, how’s the patient doing?”
“Better. After lunch is when we usually do his therapy. You want to help with that?”
“Sure,” Dean nodded.
They went out to the sitting room and Liam was laid out on a padded yoga mat on the floor. Martha showed Dean what to do to help him. Liam winced at every movement. “Babe, I know it hurts, but the therapist wouldn’t have told you to do it if it wasn’t important.”
“I really wish I could’ve seen you two in your tuxes,” Natalie chuckled as she came in with her arm around Sam.
“You were in a tux?” Liam raised an eyebrow at Dean.
“Yeah,” Dean nodded. “We ran into Bela again, the bitch, and she had us tag along to a black tie affair. There was this rich old lady that was really sweet on Sam. Since Bela could only bring one date Sam had to be Gurt’s to get in with me. Man, her paws were all over him, it was freaking hilarious.”
“Glad you had a good laugh at my expense,” Sam mumbled.
“I thought only my paws were allowed to be all over you,” Natalie raised an eyebrow at him.
Sam shrugged. “Not like I enjoyed it. I did what I had to do for my job, and I am very glad to be home with you now. Come on, let’s go watch TV in the bedroom.”
“Yeah, right, like you’re gonna actually watch TV,” Dean shook his head.
“Shut up,” Sam said as Natalie led him toward the stairs. “You’re just jealous.”
Liam frowned at Dean. “You are jealous, aren’t you?” A tear formed in the corner of his eye and ran down the side of his face.
“Come on, Babe, don’t start that,” Dean lightly brushed his cheek. “I already told you, what you can do for me is keep breathing.”
At bedtime Dean insisted on getting Liam into bed. Then he filled Liam in on everything that happened in Massachusetts. “Wow...” Liam blinked. “And after the shit Bela pulled you actually still saved her life?”
“We’re the good guys,” Dean gave a little shrug.
Liam’s hand found it’s way down to grab Dean’s cock. “Liam, don’t,” Dean shook his head and moved his mate’s hand away.
Liam sighed. “I just wanna be good for something. I’ve been lying around the house taking up space and food. Why Natalie even keeps feeding me I don’t know.”
“She loves you,” Dean said as he hugged Liam tight. “And so do I. I get that you’re depressed and frustrated, but Babe, you were injured trying to do your job. If things were reversed and I was the one in the wheelchair, would you just leave me to starve to death because I wasn’t good for anything anymore?”
“No,” Liam shook his head.
“Then why in hell do you think anyone would do that to you? Love isn’t conditional. Now, get some rest.”
“All I do is rest.”
“You need to rest that precious brain of yours too by sleeping,” Dean said as he kissed him.
Dean got comfortable and closed his eyes. Liam waited until he was asleep before scooting over to the nightstand and opening the drawer. He cursed when he found it empty. While looking around the room he saw the bottle of codine pills and a glass of water. There were six pills left and he took all six. A half hour later he started feeling really drowsy. Dean just happened to wake up a little and roll over to put a hand on Liam. When he felt cold and clammy skin his eyes snapped open. Liam wasn’t breathing and Dean panicked.
Dean called 911 and then jumped out of bed and threw on some boxers, running to Sam and Natalie’s room, frantically pounding on the door. “Sam!”
“What?” Sam opened the door also in just a pair of boxers.
“He’s not breathing!”
Sam rushed into the room and started doing CPR on Liam. Dean then noticed the empty pill bottle and he cursed. “I think he overdosed,” he told the paramedics when they arrived, showing them the bottle.
“Do you know how many he took?” a paramedic asked him.
“No,” Dean shook his head. “I don’t know how many were left.”
Liam was rushed to the hospital and everyone followed. They sat in the waiting room for three hours before the doctor called them back. “He’s alive and stable, but critical,” the doctor told them the mostly good news. “We have him on a ventilator to make sure he keeps getting oxygen. So, now all we can do is wait and see if he wakes up.”
“If?” Dean demanded.
“Well, we don’t know exactly how long he was without oxygen. We did just finish a brain scan, and there is brain activity, so at the very least you found him in time to give him a fighting chance. I wish I could tell you that he’ll wake up tomorrow and still be him, but I’m sorry, I can’t.”
“I… Thank you, Doctor,” Dean nodded. “Can I go see him now?”
“Sure, we moved him up to the second floor.”
Dean turned to Sam and Natalie. “You two go home and get some rest.”
“Are you sure?” Sam asked, putting a hand on Dean’s shoulder looking worried.
Dean nodded. “No sense in all of us having a rough night.”
The next day while Dean was having dinner in the cafeteria Liam’s eyes opened. He pressed the call button and a nurse came quickly. “Hey there,” she smiled. “Looks like you are one lucky kid. You want the breathing tube out?” Liam nodded and she pulled it out for him.
“Whether I’m lucky or not depends on your point of view,” he said hoarsely.
Dean came in then and just stood by with a clenched jaw while the nurse checked Liam’s vitals and asked him questions. “How the hell could you do this to me?” Dean shouted when the nurse was gone. Liam just stared down at his lap silently. “You get off on putting people through hell don’t you? You must because you keep doing it.”
“I didn’t exactly plan on all this,” Liam motioned around the room.
“I know. I know exactly what you had planned when you swallowed all those pills. For once I can honestly say I’m thrilled you didn’t get your wish. You didn’t even think about what it would do to me to wake up in the morning and find you dead next to me. And you have the fucking nerve to call me selfish!”
“I’m sorry,” Liam said as he started to cry.
A few tears fell down Dean’s cheeks as he moved to hug Liam tight. “If you’re really sorry, don’t ever fucking do that again. Live for me. I know you feel like a burden, but you’re not.”
The doctor came in and gave Liam a little smile. “Looks like lady luck was on your side. You’re awake and alert, which is wonderful news to the people who care about you I’m sure.”
“How long do I have to stay?” Liam asked, knowing he wasn’t going to be lucky enough to get released right away.
“Since you’re clearly a danger to yourself, we’re sending you up to the Psych ward for a seventy two hour hold.”
“The Psych ward? Please don’t...”
“I’m sorry, but you don’t have a choice here, young man. It’s standard procedure for a suicide attempt.”
Liam sighed and shook his head. “Fine...”
The paperwork was done and Liam was moved to the sixth floor. As soon as he got there he had a session with the staff psychiatrist. Dean sat in the hall and waited. “Well?” he asked when the psychiatrist came out.
The psychiatrist gave him a little smile. “Because of patient confidentiality I can’t give you details, but I can say that what your partner is going through right now is very common among otherwise healthy young people that suffer a traumatic injury. We’ll keep him and treat him the next three days here, and then my recommendation is for him to be treated as an outpatient.”
Dean nodded. “Okay. Do we have to worry about him doing this again?”
“At the moment, maybe. Of course, my goal over the next three days will be to fix that.”
“Can I see him?”
“Of course,” the psychiatrist motioned to the door.
Dean went into the little room where Liam was still seated in a wheelchair in the corner. “Personally, I think you should’ve been tossed in here a long time ago since you’ve always been a little crazy,” Dean chuckled to himself.
Liam shot him a glare. “That’s not funny.”
Dean moved to put a hand on Liam’s shoulder. “You’re gonna take full advantage of this. Get everything out while you can. Be as honest as you can be and let this guy help you.”
“What about you? You’re not exactly mentally healthy either.”
“Maybe not, but I didn’t try to kill myself.”
“Yeah, you did, it just hasn’t taken effect yet.”
Dean shrugged. “Yeah, well, that’s a little different and you know it. Anyway, since they won’t let me stay up here with you, I’m going home. Unless we come across a case, I’ll visit you tomorrow.” He kissed the top of Liam’s head. “Love you.”
