Dean came into the sitting room carrying John who was squirming a little in his arms and fussing. “I think I’ve been violated by my own nephew.”
Sam chuckled and took John and set him down. “He peek on you in the bathroom?”
“Yeah. I was peeing and he opened the door to watch me.”
“He’ll do that. He’s getting curious about stuff like that. We’ll all have to start locking the bathroom door because he’s clever and determined.”
Dean watched as John opened a toy tool box and started playing with a plastic screw driver. “He really is a lot like you were.”
Natalie came in with a bunch of bags and a cat carrier. “Is that a cat?” Sam asked her.
“Maybe,” Natalie answered. “Okay, I took John to the shelter the other day to pet the dogs and we saw this kitten. John really took a liking to her, and pets are supposed to be good for kids, so I put in an application for her. I was approved today, and here she is.” Natalie set everything down and pulled a small black and white cat out. “Her name is Mandy.”
“Kitty!” John shouted and ran over to poke at the cat.
“Yes, sweetie, kitty,” Natalie smiled at her son. “Remember, pet nice.” John seemed elated as he pet the cat. “I’m gonna put her in the laundry room for now.”
“When were you going to talk to me about getting him a pet?” Sam asked.
Natalie shot him a frustrated look. “This is my house. You live here because I let you. I wanted a cat for my son.”
“Message received,” Sam lowered his head and sat on the couch.
Natalie frowned. “Sam, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for it to sound like that I just… I’m tired, and I probably should’ve consulted you first, but I didn’t, and I have a cat now.”
Sam nodded. “Okay, I get it, not my business if you want a pet.”
Natalie sighed but took the cat and all the supplies to the laundry room with John following her. “Trouble in paradise?” Dean asked his brother.
Sam shrugged. “Sort of. I’m like, I don’t know. I don’t make any money to contribute to things. I’m gone a lot so I’m not his primary care giver either. This is actually what I was afraid of. The burden of everything is falling on her. She said she didn’t care when she found out she was pregnant, but now I think it’s a bit of a problem.”
Dean sighed. “I don’t know what to tell you. I’m sure it’s not an easy situation.”
“I’m thinking it was a mistake,” Sam said as he got up. “I’m gonna go get some air and think about things.”
That night at dinner Sam just stared at his plate again. “Hey Sam,” Dean looked to him. “I was thinking, maybe we should go visit Bobby for a bit. What do you think?”
“Might be a good idea,” Sam agreed. “See where he is on the whole mother of all thing.”
“Okay,” Dean nodded. “I’ll call him and tell him we’re coming. We’ll leave in the morning.” He pushed Sam’s plate toward him. “Now eat. You still need to.”
Sam sighed but started eating. Dean approached him while Liam was cleaning up and Natalie was getting John ready for bed. “Calm down any from earlier?” Dean asked his brother.
“If you’re asking am I still upset, the answer is yes. There is a total imbalance of power here, Dean. I can give my opinion, but she doesn’t have to follow it.”
“Well, just go to bed tonight and don’t do or say anything rash. Then we’ll go to Bobby’s and a few days away might give you some clarity.”
Sam glared at his brother. “You just don’t want me to screw up our meal ticket,” he accused.
“Well, yes and no. Sam, this is what is called a rough patch. You and Natalie, I think you make a good couple. Before John was born you two were happy. I guess just the stress of parenthood and all the things you mentioned… Every couple has problems. Look at me and Liam, he keeps getting freaked out and upset and tries to leave me. He’s still here because I didn’t let him. I fought for him. You and Natalie need to have a chat, but not right now while you’re all fluffed. Like I said, go to bed and we’ll leave in the morning for a little while.”
“Okay,” Sam nodded. “I will follow your advice for now. I still love her and everything, I’m just...”
“I know,” Dean patted his brother on the shoulder. “Welcome to a relationship.”
Liam came in as Sam went upstairs. “What would you like to do until bedtime?” Dean asked him.
“Have sex?” Liam suggested.
“If that’s what you want to do, then I say fuck yes.”
“Not really, I wanted to try out this new computer game I bought myself earlier.”
Dean sighed. “Then why bring up sex?”
“Because that seems to be your favorite activity.”
Dean grumbled under his breath. “That is not all I want from you! Sex is awesome, but I want you to want it too. I want you to be happy, so if playing a computer game will make you happy, then have at it. I’ll just watch some TV.”
Yelling could suddenly be heard coming from upstairs and Dean groaned. “This is not gonna be a good night for any of us,” he said as he went upstairs and into Sam and Natalie’s room.
“I am not some kind of pet!” Sam shouted as Dean entered.
“Time out!” Dean shouted and pulled Sam back. “Change of plans, we’re going to a hotel for the night. Sam, get your stuff.”
Sam huffed as he threw his things into his bag. Then they left and Liam paid for a hotel room. “One room?” Sam looked a little confused.
“He’s expressed no interest in sex tonight, and we may need to conserve resources.” Dean set his stuff down and got ready for bed.
Liam got breakfast in the morning and they headed for Bobby’s. “Trouble in paradise?” Bobby asked.
“Little bit,” Dean answered. “Got anything going on?”
“You could say that,” Bobby showed them a map with a bunch of red X’s. “I've been getting blasts from hunters all week. Nest of vamps. Werewolf dance party. Shifters, six of them. Two hunters died taking them out. Ghouls, ghouls. Ghoul wraith smorgasbord.”
Dean studied the map. “Is it just me, or is that a straight kick line down I-80? Looks to me like it's a Sherman march monster mash.”
“Yeah, but where are they marching to?” Sam asked.
Bobby circled a town at the end of the line. “Guy bashes in his family's heads. I was gonna go check it out by myself, but since you three are here… Sam, you’re head okay?”
“Not really,” Sam answered. “But I’m good to work a job. It’ll get my mind off things.”
“Okay then, let’s head out.”
They headed to their destination and put on their FBI suits to talk to the guy who murdered his family. His story was he was driving his route and blacked out after picking up a girl to give her a ride. He woke up at the cannery he worked at.
They went out to the station room and Sam sat down at a computer and started typing. “Alright, here we go. Truck stop, night of the murders.”
“That's him,” Dean pointed to the trucker on the video. A pretty woman approached the truck. “Hmm. Hello.” Sam paused the feed to look at her face. It was grotesque. “Freakish nightmare. What the hell is that?”
“Something tells me she’s that mother thing,” Liam said.
Dean sighed. “Um, Okay, well, if that is big mama, whatever she is, we got zero on ganking her. So what are we gonna do if we run into her? Throw salt and hope?”
“No, we're gonna turn tail and run, because we're in over our heads,” Bobby looked at him.
Dean looked back at him. “I mean, we better get some real info on this bitch before we do run into her.”
A few police offers started heading out. Bobby grabbed one of them. “What's the ruckus?”
“A guy just went postal down at the cannery,” the officer answered.
Bobby looked at his companions. “Okay, I'll go. You finish here.”
Bobby called a little while later. He ran into Rufus at the crime scene and they were checking out the body of the shooter together. Bobby wanted them to meet him and Rufus at the cannery after dinner. Sam, Dean, and Liam got there first. “Well, look what the cat dragged in,” Dean smiled at Rufus.
“It really is good to see you, Rufus,” Sam nodded.
“Hi there,” Liam smiled awkwardly.
Dean put his arm around the blond. “Rufus, this is my boyfriend and hunter extraordinaire, Liam.”
“Boyfriend?” Rufus raised an eyebrow. “Times have changed, haven’t they...”
Dean chuckled. “Trust me, he ain’t no sissy. Give him a sharp object and piss him off and see what happens. Alright, we all pack a snack? Let's see what we can see.”
They walked in a little ways and ran into Gwen. “Dean?” she looked surprised to see him.
Samuel was right behind her. “Hello there,” he gave them a nod.
“I take it you know each other,” Rufus looked at them.
“He's our grandfather, or at least that’s what he tells us,” Dean answered.
“Why are you here?” Bobby asked Samuel.
“We're working. You?”
“Same. So...you're Samuel.”
“You must be the guy pretending to be their father.”
“Well, somebody ought to,” Bobby shot back.
“Okay, let’s put the measuring sticks away and share, shall we?” Liam looked around the room. “We’re all adults here, about half the time. Samuel, what are you hunting?”
“A creature from Purgatory. She calls herself Eve. They call her mother. She was here about ten thousand years ago. Every freak that walks the face of the earth can be traced back to her. And she's back.”
“How the hell do you know all that?” Bobby asked.
“You don't know half the things that I know, kid. Hell, until recently, you didn't even know about us.”
Liam sighed. “Do I need to designate a time out chair?”
Samuel glared at him. “Where do you get the balls kid?”
“Kid?” Liam chuckled. “Have you forgotten what they told you about me? I’m nearly three hundred and forty one years old if you want to get technical.”
“What the…?” Rufus gave him a funny look. “Mind filling me in on how that’s possible?”
Liam turned to face him. “When the boys met me I was a vampire. Now, before you get all blade happy, I stress that the active word here is was.”
Rufus looked very surprised. “You cured a three hundred and some year old vampire? I’ve never heard of that happening.”
“Patrick Lockhart had a spell,” Bobby told him.
“Well, if anyone would… Wait, where’s Dean?”
“I’ll go look for him,” Gwen volunteered.
Samuel stared at Liam. “You honestly were a vampire that old?”
“Yeah.” Liam pulled up his lip and showed everyone scars where his fangs used to be. “I’ll tell you anything you want to know. No love lost between me and that species.”
They heard a gunshot and ran out to investigate. They found Gwen shot through the heart. Sam ran to try and find Dean, coming back a few minutes later. “I couldn't find him. Whatever got into those guys must have got into Dean.”
Bobby turned to Rufus. “Rufus, help Samuel move her somewhere. Sam and I will lock down here. We're gonna want to find Dean before he finds us.”
They spread out to find Dean. Sam decided to try and call him, and Rufus spotted him in a corner, aiming his gun at him. “Dean, put that damn thing down.”
“You're the least of my worries right now, Rufus,” Dean pointed back at him.
Everyone else came over. “Okay, both of you,” Bobby said to them.
“Both of us, my ass,” Rufus narrowed his eyes.
Dean grumbled. “I'm not in the mood. I just had a twelve inch thing crawl out of my ear.”
“What?” Sam shot him a funny look.
“You heard me. I just woke up on the ground, just in time to see this worm thing sliding out of my freaking ear and into that vent. So you tell me what the hell's going on!”
“You killed Gwen. That's what's going on,” Samuel shouted.
Dean looked confused. “Last thing I remember is standing around with all of you talking about Liam and his vampire days. That thing must have jumped me.”
Bobby looked at him. “So, we're talking about, like a monster that gets in you?”
“You mean like a parasite, something that took over your body,” Sam said.
Dean nodded. “Worm crawls in you, worm crawls out.”
Rufus shook his head. “Monster possession? That's novel.”
Samuel eyed Dean. “Or that thing's still in you, and we can't trust a word that you're saying.”
“It's not!” Dean insisted.
“Check your ear,” Bobby told him.
“What do you mean, check my ear? Check my ear for what?”
Liam stuck a finger in his ear and narrowed his eyes at the goo on his finger. “What the hell?”
“That means it was in you, all right,” Rufus nodded.
“Or it still is,” Samuel accused again.
“It's not in me!”
“Okay. Everybody, give up your guns,” Bobby ordered.
“What?” Samuel looked unhappy with the suggestion.
“Whoa, think about this for a second, Bobby,” Rufus didn’t look pleased either.
Bobby held out a sack. “I'm thinking we don't know who is and who ain't got the damn worm up inside his melon.”
“It's not in me!” Dean shouted again.
“I didn't say it was. Point is we don't know who it is. It could be any one of us. So the best we can do is to make it that much harder for that thing to blow our fool heads off.”
Bobby put his gun in the sack. Dean, Sam, and Rufus followed suit. “Are you waiting for a handwritten invite, Campbell?” Rufus looked at Samuel. Samuel reluctantly gave up his weapon.
“Liam?” Dean looked to him. “Give it up.”
“And if I don’t?”
“Then we’ll have to assume that thing is in there and tie you up until we can figure out how to get it out.”
“Kinky,” Liam smirked. “But I’d like to see you try.”
Dean sighed. “Babe, now is not the time to be stubborn. If you’re still you I know you won’t shoot me, and I know your ticklish spot.”
“Try and tickle me I might shoot you in the foot, but fine,” he dropped his weapon in the sack. “I just wanna go on record as not liking this idea.”
Bobby took the guns and locked them up in a locker. “Okay. We need some time to breathe, make a plan,” Bobby said when he came back.
“A plan based on?” Samuel shot him a look.
Bobby looked back at him. “I'm gonna make a few phone calls, see if anybody ever heard of anything like this.”
“Ditto,” Rufus nodded. “Got a few trees I can shake.”
The rest of them sat around while Bobby and Rufus called everyone they knew. Samuel got up and Sam eyed him. “Relax. Bathroom break. So unless you want to hold it for me...”
They let him go, but when he didn’t come back after a minute or two they went looking for him. They found him in the locker room. “Looking for something?” Dean asked.
“What difference does it make to you?” Samuel got defensive.
“Makes a lot of difference,” Dean shot back. “Sorry, you may be blood, but I still don’t completely trust you.”
“Umm...” Liam pointed to Samuel’s ear where there was a little black goo.
Samuel pulled out a small pistol he’d been hiding and aimed at the blond. Dean grabbed his grandfather’s hand and pushed it upward so he missed the shot. Samuel ran off and Bobby and Rufus came out. “I heard a shot,” Bobby looked to see if everyone was all right.
“Samuel was holding out on us,” Dean told him.
Rufus turned to Bobby. “I'm gonna be needing my gun back now, Bobby.”
“You think?” Bobby went to get their guns and handed them back.
“So, what's the plan?” Sam asked.
“We stick together. We got to keep track of this thing, who it's in,” Dean said.
They started searching the cannery and Sam suddenly grabbed Dean and pulled him back. Everyone aimed at Sam. “Hold on. Look,” he shined his flashlight on a trip wire.
Dean looked at it impressed. “Booby trap. I'll be damned.”
A little further down Sam stepped through a doorway and it closed on him, cutting him off from the rest of them. “Sam! Damn it. Son of a bitch,” Dean banged on the door.
“I'm gonna go around, okay?” Sam shouted through the door.
“Alright. Watch yourself,” Liam shouted back and they turned around to find another way through.
A minute or so later they heard a gunshot. They rushed through to find Sam standing over Samuel. “Oh, thank God,” Bobby gave a little sigh. “Drop the gun, Sam.”
Sam slowly lowered his gun. “It's me.”
Rufus pulled out a zip tie. “Okay. That's great, Sam. Just got to cuff you, uh, till we can be sure, okay? You understand, right?”
“It's in him,” Sam gestured to his grandfather as his hands were tied behind his back.
“Are you sure?” Bobby asked. “You see anything come out of him after he dropped?”
They took everyone back to the break room and swabbed Samuel’s ears. “Nothing,” Bobby frowned.
“What? So you mean he wasn't a monster when I ganked him?” Sam looked upset.
“One way to find out. Bobby, you got a cranial saw in the car?” Rufus asked.
“Of course,” Bobby answered.
“You're not going alone,” Dean insisted.
“Oh, no, he won't,” Rufus assured him. “We will both go grab some tools and see about getting some power in this place. I want you and you to watch him and him and, alright, if anything crawls out of anybody, somebody step on it.”
“You did the right thing, you know,” Dean assured his brother.
“You mean you think I did if it's in him and I'm me. This thing's playing three card monte with us.”
“Well, I'm just gonna assume you're you.”
“You want to take this off, then?” Sam motioned to his bound wrists.
“Not till we get that sucker out of his walnut.”
The lights came on and Bobby and Rufus came back. “Well alright. Let's play operation,” Rufus was holding the saw.
“You boys want to take a breather?” Bobby looked to them.
“We're good,” Dean insisted.
“We're about to crack open your grandpa's grapefruit. Take a breather.”
Sam and Dean turned to leave. “Babe, you coming?” Dean asked.
“Nah, he’s nothing to me, so I’m good.”
“Okay,” Dean sighed and the brothers left the room.
Rufus went to plug in the saw and looked at the frayed cable. “What is this? Have you been dumpster-diving again?”
“What? It still works.”
“Yeah, right. Hope so.”
Rufus plugged it in and they started to cut Samuel’s head open. Then Samuel’s eyes opened and got up and threw Bobby into a wall, then Rufus. He broke off a table leg and moved to block the doors closed with it. Liam tried to stop it, but was whacked hard with the table leg and stunned. Liam got right back up when the door was blocked and the two struggled. Liam threw Samuel against the wall with the plug and he was electrocuted and the worm crawled out of his ear.
Sam and Dean managed to kick the door open. “Everyone okay?” he asked as he helped Bobby up.
Sam shook Rufus awake and helped him up. Rufus blinked. “This can't be my afterlife because the four of you are here. What happened?”
Sam looked to Samuel’s body. “Well, when we left, he was dead on the table.”
“Yeah, till he wasn't,” Bobby commented.
“So how did he get double dead?” Rufus asked.
Dean looked at the frayed plug. “Liam threw him against that. I guess it was a live wire. It shorted, and he went ape. Then that thing crawled out of his ear.”
Bobby sighed. “At least we know what tickles it. Electricity.”
Sam nodded. “Yeah. Now the question is, where'd it go? Alright, how about, uh, check for goo, right?”
They all checked their ears and found nothing. “It might just be gone,” Liam said.
Dean shook his head. “No. It might have wised up and covered its trail.”
“Alright, let's settle this,” Sam grabbed the cable and stripped it.
Dean plugged it back in. “You're live.”
Sam tested it by touching the back of Samuel’s neck. “Yeah. Alright, who wants to go first?”
“Come on,” Dean removed his jacket and presented his arm.
Sam touched him and he winced. “Son of a...Whew. Awesome. Here, you want me to-”
Sam touched his own arm. Then Dean grabbed the cable and turned to Rufus. Rufus shook his head. “Uh, no, I'm sorry.”
Dean frowned. “No passes, Rufus. Come on.”
“I got a damn pacemaker.”
“Well, you better hope it's a good one.”
Rufus sighed. “Alright, come on. Just make it quick.” Dean touched him with it. “God! Damn it! Damn it!”
“You okay?” Dean asked.
“No, I'm not okay. Give me that.” He took the cable and shocked Bobby, who cussed like a sailor.
“Alright, Babe, your turn,” Dean turned to Liam.
Liam backed away. “I think I’m gonna have to play the sissy card here.”
Dean narrowed his eyes. “The real Liam is anything but.”
“What are you talking about? You’ve never tried to shock me before.”
Rufus tried to grab him, but Liam grabbed his head and broke his neck. Bobby, Sam, and Dean pointed their guns at him. “There are three of us and one of you,” Sam pointed out.
Sam grabbed him from behind and Dean punched him and knocked him out. He came to tied to a chair with duct tape. “Well, hey, there,” Dean greeted him by touching him with the cable and making him jerk. “Now, don't you even think about shagging ass out of here, because we got every crack in this room sealed. So get comfy.”
Liam smirked. “I am comfy. It's nice in here. And you love this guy, don'tcha? You really want to kill me and take him with me? Haven't you lost enough pals today?”
Dean shrugged. “We'll do what we have to do. And we got some questions for you, so you can either play ball, or we could fry up a little shrimp on the barbie.”
“Ask. Been waiting for you to ask.”
“What the hell's that supposed to mean?”
“It means I got nothing to hide.”
“What are you?” Sam asked.
“You haven't got a name for me yet. I'm new around here. Eve cooked me up herself.”
Dean held the cable to his neck again. “Who is she, this Eve bitch?”
“The mother of all of us, and the end of all of you. By the time she's done, there'll be more creatures than humans. You'll live in pens. We'll serve up your young and call it veal.”
“And what's your deal in all of this?” Sam asked. “I mean, how's jumping a few truckers gonna help?”
“You think I'm here to mess with a couple of cannery workers? We led you here. She has a message for you.”
“Oh, yeah? What's that?” Dean asked.
“You're all gonna die. She's pissed. She's here. And it's gonna be nothing but pain for you from here on in.”
“Well, here's my response,” Dean shocked him again.
“Dean! How much more do you think he can take?” Sam looked to his brother.
Liam chuckled. “You can't kill me, not without taking him with me.”
Dean looked to Bobby, looking a little pained. “You gotta do what you gotta do, son,” Bobby frowned.
Sam wrapped Liam’s mouth and ears with duct tape. Dean looked a little torn. “No way out now, slug-o. Liam, hang on in there.”
Dean touched him with the cable until he slumped forward. “Liam,” Dean lifted his head up. “Please be okay.”
Sam pulled the tape off and the worm fell out dead. “He's not breathing.”
“Then do something!” Dean begged with tears in his eyes.
They untied him and Sam started doing CPR. After a minute or so Liam inhaled and his eyes opened. “Oh, thank fuck!” Dean leaned down to kiss him.
They started cleaning up, and Bobby insisted on putting Rufus in a Jewish cemetery.
Dean stood over the grave when they finished burying him and shook his head. “I got to say, I never figured Rufus for the religious type.”
Bobby sighed. “Well, he didn't exactly keep kosher. He always used to pull the old can't work on the sabbath card whenever we had to bury a body. You know, I was just a job. I was Joe mechanic. Then my wife got possessed, went nuts on me. I stabbed her and that didn't stop her. Next thing I knew, this guy comes busting in, soaks her with holy water, and sends that demon straight to hell so fast. I'd have gone away for killing her. But Rufus cleaned up everything. Taught me a thing or two about what's really out there. Pretty soon we were riding together. Worked like that for years, kind of like you three knuckleheads.”
“So, what happened?” Sam asked.
“It was Omaha. It was my fault, and he never let it go.”
“Well, he should have,” Dean said.
“You don't know what I did, Dean.”
“Doesn't matter. I mean at the end of the day you two are family. Life's short, and ours are shorter than most. We're gonna spend it wringing our hands? Something's gonna get us eventually, and when my guts get ripped out, just so you three know, we're good. Blanket apology for all the crap that anybody's done all the way around.”
“Some of us pulled a lot of crap, Dean,” Sam looked to his brother.
“Well, clean slate. I mean it, for everyone,” Dean looked back at Sam. “You really wanna spend what little time you got being angry?”
“No,” Sam shook his head.
“Okay then. Let’s go home and straighten some things out.”
When they got home Natalie was playing with John in the sitting room. “Hi,” she looked up at them.
“Okay,” Dean sat by John. “You two need to have a calm and civil and discussion about whatever the hell is going on here. I’m gonna watch the kid, and Doctor Liam is gonna mediate.”
Liam had Sam and Natalie follow him up to their bedroom. They came down about two hours later holding hands. “Everything all good?” Dean asked them.
“Better,” Sam nodded. “I got some things off my chest, so...”
“Awesome,” Dean nodded. “It’s a little past dinner time, and I’m starving. What do you say we all go out to a family restaurant?”
“Okay,” Natalie nodded. “Let me get John’s diaper bag packed up.”
“Let me,” Sam insisted. He kissed Natalie on the forehead and started gathering things up.
