Chapter Ten
Dominic picked up his suitcases and walked down to the hangar to go into Kristien’s 747 which was returning to the states. He had said his good byes up at the house. Santini Air needed his flying and organising whilst Caitlin went off for a well earned holiday. Dominic was pleased to be going home for a bit but he was also worried that he would miss the birth of his first honorary grand child. Kristien had assured him that Metteo was not coming out just yet despite a couple of worrying scares of going into labour.
Hawke watched the 747 take off, pleased that he had kept the next mission out of Dominic’s reach. He did not want Dom anywhere near a possible sabotaged mission. Hawke opened the front hangar doors and ignited the three engines on the Phoenix. He swore the inertia made Airwolf standing next to the phoenix shudder. Good job Dominic wasn’t here, he would make out that the Lady was upset about Hawke defecting to a fixed wing. Only for this trip, Hawke silently promised the prototype helicopter.
Hawke taxied out on to the apron and the Hangar doors closed firmly behind him. Hawke prepared for take off and pushed the throttle forward. He was forced far back into his seat and the aircraft was easily at take off speed within a few feet of going up the runway.
“Fuck.” Hawke blurted out so shocked at the speed of the aircraft.
“See I knew you wouldn’t be able to handle her.” Kristien’s voice filled the cockpit.
“Couldn’t resist not watching huh?” Hawke replied holding the throttle back a bit.
“She’s designed to go on aircraft carriers so you can do high level recon anywhere in the world.” Kristien told him. “So a short runway is only needed.” Kristien replied.
Hawke allowed the speed to reduce to two hundred knots and he felt in more control with the phoenix. What did surprise him was how light and responsive the controls were, just like Airwolf’s.
“High level recon with this armament?” Hawke muttered questioning the MIG45’s massive capabilities.
“Well if you bloody men actually thought with your brains and not what you have in your pants then she wouldn’t need to be armed to the teeth.” Kristien replied at the current state of world affairs.
Hawke allowed the phoenix take off and soon he was cutting through the clouds at Mach 1. The setting sun was reflecting off the stealthy lines of the aircraft. Hawke looked skyward and started to take in the effortless climb the aircraft was doing. He was already at sixty five thousand feet and climbing, the engines steadily groaning.
“Will you bloody well open her up and get your arse to one hundred and twenty thousand feet before some one spots you.” Kristien instructed. “You’ve got no bloody markings on her remember.”
Hawke checked his mach meter, it read Mach 1.5 and he pushed the throttle forward. The aircraft surged forward eating the darkening sky which soon went to purple. The curve of the earth so far below. The altimeter read one hundred and twenty thousand feet. Hawke had never been so high, he was sure he was in space. The pressure suit he was wearing was amazing, he knew his blood would be boiling without it but when he was a test pilot before all the pressure suits were cumbersome and sometimes painful to wear. When testing Airwolf that was the first time a flight suit ever felt comfortable but this suit was like wearing a second skin. Comfortable did not describe it.
“Oh wow you wanna see this Kristie, it’s so beautiful.” Hawke savoured the special moment of being so high above the earth.
“You know I have been higher than that.” Kristien reminded him.
“No if I remember rightly I asked if you had flown the space shuttle and you completely blanked me, being totally aloof towards me.” Hawke reminded her of their second trip out in Airwolf.
“I didn’t blank you, I was instructing you on flying Airwolf.” Kristien corrected him. “Anyway get back to looking after the phoenix will you! You will be overshooting Kuwait at this rate.”
Hawke smiled at their brief reminiscing which helped pass some time. “I will talk to you later ok.” Hawke replied to her. “Please get some rest and I will be back in no time at all.”
