Part two of Hodges’ past and a little more reasoning as to why he has
become that callous, untrusty, snarky trace tech we all love and admire. This
will be the last chapter before the hiatus; I have my hands full with RL once more
and am unsure when I’ll get the cance to update again. So, until then, have
fun, stay cool and sober and remember to review!^^

The
laughter got caught in his throat; Nick choked, coughed, gasped for air and
coughed some more. David merely cocked a brow, then patted his back.
“You sound
like Maru hacking up a hairball. Want me to get some cat grass?” Nick shook his
head, wheezed and rasped,
“Y-yo’ got
kids?”
“Heck, no!
I mean, we did try, believe me, until she suddenly changed her mind
again, because she feared that she wouldn’t get her figure back after giving
birth.”
Nick, busy
blinking away tears to regain some clear vision, panted,
“That-
that’s the dumbest excuse for not having children I’ve ever heard! What’s wrong
with her? I mean, didn’t ..you want to have kids?”
David
froze; it was the first time he had ever told someone the entrire story about
him and Debbie. Should he really reveal the entirety of his tragic tale?
Then again,
he was too far gone now not to bring it to an end. Looking anywhere but at
Nick, he admitted,
“I wouldn’t
have minded, but she..after that, she became more and more..cold. And violent.
She started to hit Bosco for no good reason, yelled at her coworkers and agent,
tread on every foot in reach, kicked me out of our room..it was like, going to
bed with Reese Witherspoon and waking up to –the Olsen twins.”
Nick
grimaced.
“That’s
scary. Y’ ever had her checked for –bipolar disorder or shizophrenia?” For a
moment, there was a far-off, almost trance-like look in the blue eyes.
Slowly,
David rose, reached for the hem of his shirt and began to unbutton it, when he
replied,
“I..opted
it. Once. And that’s when she really went crazy.” He slipped off his
shirt, never noticing how Nick’s eyes boggled, then pulled off the navy t-shirt
he wore underneath. For a second, he hesitated, then threw the clothing item
away.
His skin
wasn’t quite as pale as his complexion might have suggested; yet, the slight
tan did nothing to hide the long, pink scar trailing all the way from his left
collarbone across his chest down to a spot about three inches to the right of
his belly button.
“She kicked
Bosco, and I mean real hard, with her high heel. The poor pup must’ve
flown across the whole dining room, and only because he wanted to say hello.
I..I guess I lost it there, because I yelled at her and shook her and she was
screaming and…suddenly she held that god-forsaken steak knife in her hand and
there was blood all over the floor. I didn’t even realize it was mine; I thought
it was Bosco’s. I just –grabbed her, hauled her out of the house and into her
car, threw all the cash I had on me in her face and told her to get lost.”
He gave a
small, ruefull smile.
“Guess, I
must’ve really scared her that time, because she took off with screeching
tires. Next thing I remember is me calling the vet and the locksmith to make an
emergency house call. I try to –help Bosco, who just lays there, whimpering,
when the bell rings. So I walk over, open the door and the guy from the keyservice
goes like, ‘Good evening, you call-oh my God, Sir, were you stabbed?!?’ I look
down and see this ..huge slash across my chest and my shirt in bloody rags and
say, ‘Oh. Guess I was’, and black out.”
David
chuckled at the memory; a levity Nick couldn’t share.
Instead,
the brunet let his eyes roam up and down the long, slender body he had so often
fantasized about and that was now just within his reach. He longed to trace the
scar with his lips and fingers, kiss the soft, silky skin and lavish it with
his tongue until it vanished, taking the pain and hurt David so obviously still
carried with him, along. Nick balled his fists and gulped down a mouthful of
saliva; it wouldn’t help for his guest to catch him drool at his semi-dressed
sight.
“So? What
happened next?” he asked, cursing himself that his voice sounded so pressed.
David huffed.
“Well, the
usual; lawyers, divorce, arguing about every single thing we owned…She sued me
for abuse and battery, I sued her for animal cruelty and attempted murder.
Considering the slash on my chest, she realized that I got quite the leverage
against her, so she dropped both her charges and I..pulled back the murder
attempt. She got the house, car, all the clothes and her part of our life
insurance –well, actually half of mine aswell, because she feigned a
pregnancy.”
Nick gaped.
“How do
you..feign a pregnancy?” A sneer accompanied the reply.
“By..having
an affair with your gynecologist? That’s also when I found out that she had
been sleeping around for a while, but by then I couldn’t give a damn about it,
anymore. She had him fake her test results and insisted on the clause that half
of my share was hers, if she had to support any children conceived during our
marriage. Frankly, I was just glad to be rid of her, never mind what it cost
me. I kept Bosco, because the poor guy was naturally terrified of her ever
after the fight, and moved back to my mother’s until I got back on my feet. And
guess who came showing up at my workplace the very minute I had earned enough
money to make it on my own, again?”
“Debbie”,
mumbled Nick.
David
nodded.
“Yah. Comes
waltzing in, belly as flat as a barn door and yells at me for cheating her out
of her share of the life insurance. I told her, I didn’t have any say in it and
to go discuss it with the agency, not me. She keeps fussing and screeching
until I tell her not to upset herself too much, because of the baby. Debbie
screams ‘There is no baby! There never was one, you idiot!’ and I go, ‘Not from
me, for sure.’”
Nick
winced.
“Ouch.”
“Hey, I can
be vindictive, if need be”, declared his vis-ŕ-vis. Picking up his t-shirt, he
redressed again(muck to Nick’s chagrin), then settled down next to the brunet.
For a while, they shared a comfortable silence, only once interrupted by Maru
who came to demand his share of attention, then Nick asked quietly,
“It still
doesn’t explain why y’ ended up here in Vegas. Not that I’m complaining.”
Blue eyes
slanted ever so slightly. A frown replaced the cool gaze.
“Well, my..supervisor
didn’t like her coming in every other week and ordered me to keep her away. I
told him, not the let her in, but, since it’s a public place, he couldn’t get a
warrant without her actually disturbing the peace or causing damage. So, I got
one instead and…” he trailed off, swallowing hard.
“And?” Nick
pushed on.
David
merely began to pick invisible pieces of lint from the comforter, brow furrowed
in worry. There was a hint of sadness in the clouded orbs that pulled at every
string in Nick’s heart. Gently, he lay his brawny hand on the elder one’s
shoulder, who drew a deep breath and choked,
“One day, I
got home from work and my neighbour next door is..there, waiting for me, Bosco
on his arms. Telling me, that he backed out of his garage when-when Bosco just
came shooting out of the blue and…he never stood a chance. I’m just –glad, he
probably didn’t even knew what hit him.”
He let out
a shuddering breath. Nick drove soothing circles over his back, but David
didn’t even seem to notice.
Letting
sympathy colour his words, Nick mumbled,
“Who knows,
maybe he..broke lose or was hunting after a cat or-“
David shook
his head vehemently.
“No way.
Bosco was a perfectly trained guard dog and never left the house or appartment
on his own. And even if, he would have waited in front of the door until I got
home. So, unless he was commanded to or chased, there was no reason for him to
run wild.”
“How would
you know?”
David
heaved a deep sigh.
“When..I
had taken care of..Bosco’s body, I returned to find the lock broken and my flat
turned upside down. Nothing was missing, but all pillows had been slashed and
there was..theater blood all over the place.” The Texan grimaced.
“Gross.”
David nodded in agreement.
“And scary.
I just..couldn’t take it any more, so I asked my boss for a transfer on the
next possible notion and, well, welcome to Vegas. It wasn’t as far away as I
had hoped, but far enough.”
He rested
his forehead on the comforter.
“And now
she’s found me here, too.”
“Yeah, but
now at least, y’ know what you’re up against. And you got us to help ya.”
David
looked at him, sceptically. Nick gave him a broad, reassuring grin.
“Don’t
worry; I’ll take care of ya.”
Plopping
his head back on the quilt, David griped,
”Oh yeah, I feel so much safer now.”
Nick
couldn’t help but chuckle. David squinted one blue eye at him.
“Besides,
what am I supposed to do all day? I took a leave of absence for an
undeterminded time and am already bored out if my mind.”
Nick
shrugged.
”I dunno. How about a self-defense course? Or some shooting exercises. I hear
Brass’s giving lessons this month.”
“I despise
guns!” A slow, devious smile crept across Nick’s face.
“Or, you
can start working on the tests in order to become a CSI Level one.”
This time,
David’s eyes held the smallest amount of malice.
“I hate
field work.”
Nick merely
beamed at him.
“I know.
But Ecklie hates people straining the budget without actually putting any
work-related effort into their paid free time even more. So, what’s it gonna
be?”
The trace
tech thought about it for a moment, then buried his face back into the pillows,
groaning,
“I hate my
life!”
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
*giggles * I’m sorry, but David is just too cute in
the field; the way he wrinkles his nose at everything, glances at the watch
waiting for time to go faster and picks up essential evidence without even
breaking a sweat…my favourite part is somewhere in early season nine, where he
opens the container lid, shows Nick the evidence everybody’s been looking for and states “You can work hard
–or you can work smart. Can I go now?”
