(Open where 3-11 ends. Vertag and Janet are inside a room in the caves of The Order. They stand next to a dead body below a control panel with a tarrat card and a button. Millious is standing in the doorway with a gun pointed at Vertag. Behind her is a large steel door, slightly rusted, with water leaking under it)
Vertag: You know, I thought you'd have shown up at the compound again, threatening some lives for your Chief.
Millious: (shrugs) Eh. I decided I'm better off without him. He was an inattentive lover.
Vertag: How would you know?
Millious: What?
Vertag: Well, you have to think, any of your erogenous zones are separated by more than a few steps on his part. Maybe he just couldn't run fast enough.
Janet: Or maybe he got lost along the way?
Vertag: Good point. Did you ever tattoo some landmarks to help him-
Millious: (raises gun) Shut up.
Vertag: Or...you'll kill me? You're going to kill me if I do shut up so...
Millious: We've had the same training. You're going to cooperate until you have a chance to turn the tables. The longer you live, the better your chances to live. Now. Shut up and cooperate.
Vertag: Understood.
Janet: Wait, if you don't want Evan freed, why are you bothering?
Millious: I want what Evan knew. I heard that Lessala tortured him-
Vertag: Oh, I wouldn't call it torture.
Janet: I would.
Vertag: Really?
Janet: Dam was very impressed.
Vertag: She told me she didn't lay a finger on him.
Janet: Yeah. That was the impressive part.
Vertag: Oh. One of those. Sometimes, she can be clear across the bedroom, and just by telling me what she wants to do-
Millious: Will you two SHUT! UP!
Vertag: Right, right. Sorry. You were saying something....
Janet: About a poor love-life.
Vertag: That's it.
Millious: That's NOT IT! I want Evan's files. His contacts in other cities. His go-between to Earth Government and to Fleet.
Vertag: I'd have thought you were his go-between. To everything.
Millious: What?
Vertag: Well, same as the sex. Once you had him on his widdle toy train set-
Janet: Train set?
Vertag: Oh, didn't Lessala tell you? It was about this big-
Millious: (fires a round over Vertag's head. He ducks and takes a half step towards the panel with the tarrat card.) SHUT IT!
Vertag: Alright! Just don't shoot!
Millious: Give me the Earthling!
Janet: What?
Vertag: You'll be her hostage, Janet, until I can get the transcript of the interview.
Janet: Well, that doesn't sound like fun.
Vertag: No. And since she's probably out for revenge, the chances she'll hand you back are pretty small.
Millious: Well, I don't see where you have a choice. Now, put her down and slide her over to me.
Vertag: That's for my gun. For a hostage, you order me to let her walk towards you.
Millious: Screw that.
Janet: (nods towards the tarrat card) That's not very diplomatic.
Millious: What?
Vertag: Seriously? You want to use the... The not diplomacy option?
Janet: It may be all we have left.
Millious: Ha! Diplomacy! From First Nation. I just want to-
(Vertag punches the button with his fist and cover's Janet with his other hand. There's a ratcheting noise that grows into a huge sound of clanking)
Millious: What have you-?
(Cut to a POV from behind Millious. Over her shoulder we see Vertag. His eyes grow big as he looks at the camera. Millious glances quickly back. She does a double-take. There's a roaring sound.)

(Open on the wall of the Exchange. A Marine team in a human observation nest looks towards a building across the street.)
Marine1: (looking through binoculars) What's she doing? I see the curtains move but...
Marine2: (Looking through infra-red sights) Looks like she's adjusting the window treatments.
Marine1: Interior decorating?
Marine2: Maybe she's getting ready for a follow-on career? After the Exchange closes, her spy network is defunct.
Marine1: Possibly. Why in the rooms SID used to rent though? Why not in her office or Vertag's?
(Cut to an infra-red view. Lessala's figure reaches up to the top of a window, manipulates something.)
Marine2: (voice) Did they have microphones in the SID offices? Maybe she's recovering the hardware?
Marine1: (voice) It's a good place to put something. No one ever looks at the top of the window for bugs.
Marine2: (voice) Call Perez, see if they ever heard the giants listening to other giants.
Marine3: (voice) Aye, sergeant.
(Lessala finishes what she's doing, shoulders a knapsack and leaves the room)
Marine1: (voice) Now where is she going?
(Cut back to the Marines as they lower their binoculars)
Marine2: Hmm....send a text to the lookouts near the other SID watching posts. See if she shows up at all of them. (fade out0
(Fade in on torrents of water thundering through one of the Order's passageways. A flashlight floats by, shining up. A hand rises from the water. Vertag lifts Janet into the air. She gasps and sputters for a bit, looks ahead and screams)
Janet: Look out!
(Ahead, the water parts as the passageway ends in a T. Vertag's hand goes straight to the wall. Janet's okay but the submerged giant apparently hits the wall hard. There is a huge burst of bubbles.)
(Vertag's other hand scrabbles at the wall, finding a small shelf. His head slowly rises above the water. His flashlight is strapped to his wrist, giving them a little illumination.)
Vertag: (panting heavily) Did you say something?
Janet: Um...Look out?
Vertag: (stares for a second) Okay, when I can figure out how to attach a rudder, you can steer. (looks back and forth)
Janet: Where's Millious?
Vertag: I think I saw her grabbing at a ladder as we went by.
Janet: All I saw was my guardian angel.
Vertag: Really?
Janet: Yeah. And man, was she pissed!
Vertag: (laughs) Now where do we go?
Janet: Well, is the water rising or falling?
Vertag: (stares at the wall for a second) It's holding steady.
Janet: Maybe it'll recede in a few.
Vertag: If the water's meant to destroy this place, why would it fall back again?
Janet: Because they knew we were coming.
Vertag: You think this is all an elaborate set-up? A fake Order? Again?
Janet: No, no! I think they really mean for this to be destroyed. But not until we had what they wanted us to have.
Vertag: (stares) You found a waterproof envelope, too?
Janet: (long silence) Yes.
Vertag: What was in it?
Janet: You said 'too.' What did you find?
Vertag: (shakes his head) Nothing that helps you.
Janet: Same here. You don't need what I found.
Vertag: Okay. (he pulls himself higher out of the water and puts her on the shelf he's holding.) Just wait here a second.
Janet: Hey!
Vertag: (drops into the water. His head just barely clears the surface) You may be right. It is going down. (Jumps back up to grab the shelf) Let's get out of here. (offers his hand, she climbs on)
Janet: Oh, man, I thought you were about to leave me here for not sharing secrets.
Vertag: If I wanted to, Janet, I'd just find the envelope under your shirt and take it home to read it. We have magnifying machines powerful enough for human small print.
(He holds her and the flashlight out of the water and wades along. Slowly, the level drops until he's waist deep.)
Janet: Your arm's shaking. You can put me in your pocket, let it rest.
Vertag: And if there's a hole in the floor, and I fall through it, you start to drown before I do. I'm shaking because I'm cold, not tired.
Janet: Oh. Well. Thanks for thinking about me.
Vertag: It's my job. (stops, holds her to his face, smiles at her,) Of course, I'll still think of you when it's not my job.
Janet: That's coming soon, isn't it?
Vertag: I'm afraid so. (continues wading) We've accomplished just about everything they put us together to do.
Janet: (softly) Almost...
Vertag: (shakes himself, changes the topic) You know, the funny thing is, I'd be glad to give Millious the information.
Janet: Really? It's not classified?
Vertag: Oh, it is. But there's nothing there she doesn't already know. They had a very compartmentalized organization. But everything he did, either she knew about it or did it for him.
Janet: But she asked about his Earth Government contacts?
Vertag: He doesn't have any. He lied to her about being an Earthling agent.
Janet: Oh. So, if she's threatening to hurt us, you can give her the data?
Vertag: Oh, no, not in a million years.
Janet: (rubs forehead) Oh, I hate this planet. What sort of giant spy logic leads to that conclusion?
Vertag: She wants to hold you hostage until she gets new information to help her cause. There is no new information to give her.
Janet: So she'll...always suspect you're holding out. She'll never give me up.
Vertag: I don't think she would anyway, but there's no chance she'll believe we gave her everything.
Janet: Oh.
Vertag: Make sense? Even to a human spy?
Janet: Yes. Thank you. I'm sorry I... I should trust you. I do trust you.
Vertag: Thanks.
Janet: I just hardly ever understand you.
Vertag: Well, this is easy. I would never let anyone hurt you. (He gazes at her, she looks up at him. She rests a hand on the knuckle holding her up. Opens her mouth to say something- And Vertag steps in a hole. He sinks, his hands shoot up into the air. Janet and the flashlight remain dry while he thrashes in the water.)
(After a moment he backs up and rises up)
Janet: Are you okay?
Vertag: I'm fine. Are you okay?
Janet: I'm fine. Hole?
Vertag: I found some stairs. Wanna see what the Order keeps in its basement? (she scowls at him. He turns around and wades the other way. Fade out)
(Fade in to Adams' office. The Colonel, Perez and Brown have a map of the area around the compound displayed on his projection TV. X's mark spots in the buildings on the East and South side, little O's mark places on the unimproved lots to the West and North.)
Adams: So what's she been doing?
Perez: She's visited each and every spot the police, SID or Dordell have conducted surveillance. Except for the parked cars. They're gone.
Brown: (points to the O's) She also walked to and stood at the more informal spots they used less frequently. Lookouts call them the duck blinds.
Adams: Do we know if SID still pays rent on those rooms? Or is spending time maintaining the blinds?
Brown: No idea. If this was back home, there'd be an email trail or a budget. Here, we just have to hope we intercept a phone call or see someone handing over cash.
Adams: Huh. And no idea what she's doing?
Perez: She may have been recovering bugs. Or planting them.
Adams: After the surveillance has been secured?
Perez: It may be a giant-intel practice we don't know about.
Brown: Or understand.
Perez: True, they are a tiny bit bonkers sometimes.
Brown: But bugs don't make sense. We never heard them listening to the listening posts. And what would you hear, anyway? Yourself being recorded?
Adams: Bombs?
Perez: She's preparing to demolish empty rooms?
Adams: Well, she's doing something. Figure out what!
Perez: We're trying, but we just can't see what she's doing.
Brown: We could ask her.
Perez: Excuse me, Lessala, but we accidentally spied on you for several hours and we were wondering...?
Brown: She has to know we're watching her. She hasn't taken any effort to hide from the sentries.
Adams: (laughs) Knowing the giants, she and Vertag have a bet on how long it'll take us to ask what she's doing.
Perez: (nods) That would be in character.
(Fade out) (Fade in on another room. It's barren, rock walls, but has a skylight. Sunlight shines down on the still waters covering the floor. Vertag wades in, looks up at skylight)
Vertag: Look. That might be a way out.
Janet: And into the sunlight. I could use some sunlight. Is there a way up there?
Vertag: Are you kidding? Super Agent Vertag of the SID is always prepared.
Janet: And how prepared are you?
Vertag: My foot just hit a ladder under the water, here.
Janet: Right here?
Vertag: Right here.
Janet: How incredibly well-prepared you are, Super Agent Vertag.
Vertag: Yep. (Turns off his flashlight, bends to fish around in the water, holding Janet high. Gets the ladder, leans it on the wall under the skylight.) So. Up and out. (starts climbing)
Janet: What about Millious? (Vertag puts Janet in his pocket and tries to open the window)
Vertag: If she's not super-spy enough to find the ladder, she deserves to wander around the water for a while. (pops the window, climbs out)
(Cut to the outside looking down at the skylight)
(Vertag sits on the sill. IT's hidden against the shoulder of a mountain. Rocky outcrops surround them, a few bushes and trees. He stands to grab the ladder and lift it.)
Vertag: First one to find the ladder gets to pull it up after him. (Once his hands are full, with the ladder halfway up,Millious steps out from behind a rock, gun aimed at Vertag's head)
Millious: No, FIRST one to find the ladder gets to drop it back down in the water to make a trap.
Vertag: Ah. I was wondering where you'd gotten to. Don't move, I assume?
Millious: Put the Earthling down.
Vertag: Come get her. My hands are full.
Millious: And get within arm's length of you? Put the ladder down.
Vertag: You want me to lift it up and put it...over there? (Nods his head to one side)
Millious: Don't pull it up! Just drop it!
Vertag: Down there?
Janet: You won't be able to reach it down there.
Vertag: She's right. It'll be out of reach. And it's a good ladder.
Millious: DROP THE LADDER, IDIOT!
Vertag: Okay. (Steps to the edge of the window, drops the ladder down into the caves...but keeps a hold on it. Gets yanked out of sight)
Millious: HEY!
Janet: EEEK!
(Cut to the flooded room below. When the ladder hits the floor and stops, Vertag slides down to the water. He kicks the ladder over and presses back against the wall, drawing his gun.)
(Millious' shadow crosses the window but she doesn't come close enough to offer a target. Vertag waits. The shadow leaves. Vertag waits)
Janet: Um...
Vertag: Shhh.
Janet: (whispers) This would be a good time to call the shuttle down, wouldn't it?
Vertag: Yes, Janet.
Janet: (whisper) Too bad someone turned off all my electronics.
Vertag: Yes, Janet.
(Vertag wades slowly and quietly across the room to the corner and through the door. Watches the skylight the entire time, Millious never shows. Exits the room)
(Cut to another dark passageway. He backs slowly down the way, eye and gun pointed towards the lighted doorway.)
Janet: Is there another way out of here?
Vertag: Hope so. If not, I may end up eating you to survive.
Janet: A lovely image.
Vertag: Yes. (his hand comes across a side passage. He glances down it, sees nothing but darkness. He starts to wade down that way) And me without any ketchup.(fade out
(fade in to Lessala's desk at the Exchange. She enters, puts her knapsack under her desk and sits down. Perez sits at her pencil cup. She stands as Lessala sits)
Perez: Hey, giant!
Lessala: Hey, Major!
Perez: What's in the bag?
Lessala: Nothing, now.
Perez: What was in the bag?
Lessala: (shakes her head) I owe him a backrub. (looks down at the Major) I thought you guys would ask him, first. Kinda ease up on the topic, you know? Just in case he didn't know what I was doing.
Perez: That might have been true before. (she puts her hands together and taps back and forth the way the giants did in 3-7) But we figure you guys are sneaky.
Lessala: (eyes wide, she taps her fingertips on the desk beside Perez' feet.)(Caption: YOU SPEAK FINGER QUESTION WHERE LEARN QUESTION HOW LEARN OURS QUESTION)
Perez: Um...I saw it. I never said I learned it.
Lessala: Oh. Well. Okay. Yeah. It's something we...know. Every kid in high school comes up with a system for communicating with their date while avoiding the microphones.
Perez: The same system?
Lessala: The basics are the same. Then it's just learning the details of your partner's system.
Perez: That's very interesting. Of course, it doesn't tell me what you were doing out there all afternoon.
Lessala: No, it doesn't does it?
Perez: You're not going to tell me.
Lessala: Just call it insurance. Okay? (Fade out as Perez shakes her head)
(Fade in to a dark passage in The Order's caves. Millious wades slowly down the way. She has a very faint flashlight on and moves carefully not to splash. She pauses as she hears voices.)
Janet: (voice) Wait, what was that?
Vertag: (voice) Hsst.
(Millious sinks down in the water and creeps forward. She lifts her pistol and turns out her flashlight. There's a moment of darkness)
Janet: (voice) Head's up!
(Janet fires a flare from her grenade launcher. It arches over Millious' head and explodes against the ceiling. She gasps, covers her eyes and fires wildly in the general direction of Janet. Janet stands on a shelf in the wall, the bullets go wide. Millious thrashes a bit in the water, covering the sound of Vertag rising up out of the water behind her. He points a pistol at her, then reverses it and clubs the back of her head with the grip. She staggers, spins to fight, they grapple in the water. The flare flickers and goes out)
(After a moment of darkness, Janet fires another flare. The light shows a roiling water surface but no giants.)
Janet: Vertag? Are you okay? VERTAG! (pause) Millious?
Millious: (rising slowly from the water, blood cascading down her head from a wound on her forehead. She holds a combat knife.) I am going to take you apart...
Janet: Eep. (she quickly loads a round into her launcher but Millious is stalking forward quickly)
(Vertag rises from the water again, one hand clasped to his shoulder with blood showing. He raises his gun and shoots Millious' ass. She screams and falls. She drops her knife and barely manages to hold her head above the water by pressing in the walls.)
Vertag: Enough of this. (he wades forward and puts the gun barrel against her shoulder. She sees it but doesn't dare to let go of the walls) First aid or a slow death by drowning?
Millious: I'd rather die! (she lets go and sinks. Vertag watches her.)
Janet: Well?
Vertag: Well, what?
Janet: Are you going to let her die? (The water bubbles, Millious thrashes a bit, splashing)
Vertag: I thought so.
Janet: I thought you wanted to take her alive! That's why you didn't shoot her!
Vertag: Then she stabbed me. I can't carry her out. (The thrashing slows) I'm not sure I can get up that ladder, now.
Janet: Save her! I'll get her up the ladder. Okay?
Vertag: You? (Janet crosses her arms and stares) Okay. (reaches into the water) I'll pay money to watch that. (fade out as the water thrashes under his arms
(Fade in under the skylight. Millious is propped in a corner as Vertag awkwardly raises the ladder into place one-handed. Only a little bit of light comes in through the window as sunset approaches. He places Janet on one rung of the ladder, then waves at Millious.)
Vertag: Okay. Let's see the magic trick.
Janet: (sits down on the rung) Okay. But it's going to cost you a secret.
Vertag: What?
Janet: It's okay. I'll tell you two secrets. You tell me one.
Vertag: You need secrets to get her out of this cave?
Janet: Just one from you. Okay. I'll go first. (she lifts her shirt, pulls out the protector) The Order left me a cure for cancer.
Vertag: Oh, Janet.
Janet: We have to test it. But if it's a real cure...
Vertag: You're going to end the Skirries cure. The Directorate...they'll go insane.
Janet: I promise. I'll tell you before we change anything.
Vertag: Janet, I never wanted-
Janet: Your turn!
Vertag: What?
Janet: What's in the packet I felt behind your pocket?
Vertag: Ah....
Janet: Come on! Tell me.
Vertag: It's nothing to do with you.
Janet: And...
Vertag: It's a map of Directorate Headquarters. The way the Order snuck in to rescue arrested scientists or really smart Earthlings. (Janet gasps) What?
Janet: Nothing. (shakes her head) Yet.
Vertag: Okay. Okay, your turn. What's your second secret?
Janet: Brown figured out how you turned off my electronics before. And a way to shield them.
(A bright spotlight shines from above the skylight. A giant-sized harness lowers on a cable. The sound of the shuttle rises)
Perez: (amplified voice from the sky) Janet! Get Millious into the harness. We'll shrink her once she's stable.
Vertag: (shakes his head) That’s a good secret.
Janet: Isn't it though?
(Fade out. Caption on the dark screen: One Month Later, Fade in to Vertag's office. Vertag is sitting at his desk, cleaning his pistol. He holds the barrel over to the SOG.)
Vertag: I miss any spots?
SOG: No, sir. None I can see.
Vertag: Thanks.
(The elevator door opens. Janet steps out, dragging a giant-sized tarrat card. We only see the back. Vertag sits back and looks curious)
Janet: Vertag I... I made you a promise. About the... The fortune. (she puts the card down on the desk face-up. It's the Five of Axes. Vertag reaches out to touch it with one finger)
(Flashback to 3-5:)
Vertag: What, like in a fortune? (Five of Axes is shown. It shows a young man picking up abandoned axes as two other men slink away.) Um. Distrust. Lies. Ties broken.
Janet: Treaties violated?
Vertag: (Looks at her suspiciously) I suppose. (looks over the spread) If this was the final card of a fortune, I'd say that someone was going to do something that... That ends the peace. And starts a war. Or at least a period of heightened tension, as they say on the news... The Five is spoiling for a fight that you think may be worth it.
Janet: (softly) Maybe. It just may be
.Vertag: Janet, is there something you want to share with the room?
Janet: (Sniffs a bit) No. Not....yet. (looks up at Vertag) But I promise, okay? I promise to tell you if I'm going to do something...drastic.
Vertag: (stares down at her. Then nods) Okay.
(Back to the Present)
Vertag: (stares down at her. Then nods) Okay. Thanks, Janet.
