Chapter 12 – What to do next? “Dad?” Molly asked. “Yeah?” Gene responded, still getting used to his daughter’s eager acceptance of him. He allowed her to make a space between him and Alex as she squeezed herself in between them on the garden bench. His arm went around her shoulders as she enthusiastically looked up into his face, she beamed. “Well, I was wondering, when are you going to take mum and me back to Manchester?” “Me an’ your mum haven’t really discussed it yet.” Gene looked up from Molly to Alex, hoping that Alex would take the hint and help him out. “What do you mean?” The shine in her eyes dulled slightly as she began to think over the comment Gene had made. “You’re staying together aren’t you?” “Of course we are, Molls.” Alex jumped in, “we haven’t discussed it because we wanted to talk to you about it first. It’s a decision that involves you too; we wouldn’t take that away from you.” “What do you want t’ do, scamp?” Gene asked. “I’m voting for Manchester,” Molly folded her arms across her chest, “I really liked it there. Sorry mum, but my friends were a lot nicer in Manchester than they were in London.” “I know, Molls, Evan told me, remember? Not like we’ve any family to speak of, is it? Only Evan.” Alex’s eyes clouded, attempting to keep back the tears that threatened to fall down her cheeks. “How about you, Gene?” “I’ll vote for Manchester every time, it’s me ‘ome Alex but … ‘ey,” the hand of the arm that lay around Molly’s shoulders went to Alex’s face as he noticed her watery orbs. “What’s wrong?” She shook her head, “nothing!” “You’re not cryin’ for nothin’, love. What’s up?” “My parents?” “They live here?” He saw Molly shake her head as Alex shrank away from him. “No, they’re buried here.” “Eh?” “Granny and granddad were killed in a car bomb, Evan brought mum up.” Gene suddenly realised the enormity of Alex’s loss, “but you came up t’ Manchester before, t’ live?” “Yes, but I didn’t think I’d stay there, it was only ever temporary.” Gene pulled away from her and sat back into the garden bench, as far from her as possible. “That was, until I met you. Again.” He met her gaze, “do you want me t’ move down ‘ere?” “What about you, any family?” Alex asked. Gene nodded, “me mam’s still alive, an’ me brother; but I don’t see ‘im.” Alex knew she was being selfish if she asked Gene to move his whole life down to London, and what did she really have to gain by that anyway. In Manchester, Molly would be happy, Gene’s family would be too, and it would be easier for her to find work up there than for him to find work in London. “Let’s make that three votes for Manchester, but I want to be able to come back whenever I need to.” “What do you think I’m goin’ t’ do with you woman as soon as I’ve married you. Keep you chained up indoors.” He beamed at her. Molly looked to her mum, unaware of the banter but hoping that her mother would be happy at his remark. “Well, I have heard these funny rumours about northerner’s, you know?” She smiled back, biting her lip. Gene leaned into Alex, around Molly so that he wouldn’t squash her, taking Alex’s face in his hands and kissed her. Molly grinned; she loved these moments between her parents. She moved off the bench and took a seat opposite them, as they closed the distance between themselves. “Hope you two are going to make me a baby brother or sister when we’re all settled.” Gene broke the kiss looking at Alex with eyebrows raised before both turned to Molly, who wore the biggest smile she was capable of creating. “Maybe, possibly.” Gene remarked. Alex put her hand to Gene’s cheek and pulled him around to face her once more. “Hopefully, definitely,” she whispered before closing the distance between them and kissing him with as much force as she could muster, pulling away again as her breath failed her. “Really?” Gene asked quietly, “you really want that?” She nodded, seeking out his excited blue eyes with her own. “Yes, let’s just move and get married first, ok?” He nodded back, how lucky could one guy be? Well, as far as luck went the Gene Genie was definitely riding high. .oOo. “You know, I realised something today, when we were discussing where we were going to live.” Alex began as Gene topped her wine glass up. Gene placed the bottle back in the wine cooler before resting his hand on her thigh, glad that he’d asked the waiter if he could move his place around the table so that he was sat next to Alex instead of opposite her. The small contemporary bistro that they were spending their evening in was fairly busy and their close proximity had allowed them the privacy they needed without the need to raise their voices too much. He lent over and placed a gentle kiss on her shoulder inviting an unusual blush to tint her cheeks as she accepted his affections coyly. “An’ what were that?” He asked. “That for two people who love one another and are engaged, we don’t really know too much about each other’s lives.” “What do you want t’ know?” “Well, you said that your mum was still alive, I take it you see her? And what about your brother? What happened to your dad?” “Me mam lives with ‘er new bloke that she met at bingo ‘bout eighteen month ago. She moved in with ‘im an’ their happy. ‘E looks after ‘er so I don’t ‘ave to worry much, they’re in sheltered housin’. I try an’ see ‘er every two week, more if I can but now she’s got Terry …” He shrugged his shoulders. “Do you miss not doing as much for her?” “S’pose so.” “Do you like Terry?” “’E’s ok, she never ‘as to want for anythin’, but ‘e’ll never be me dad. Me dad was the very best of men, a true gent, would do anythin’ for anyone given ‘alf the chance. Got bowel cancer, they found it too late, ‘e were a proud man, never go t’ the doctor’s unless me or me mam threatened ‘im with takin’ ‘is tobacco and bitter away from ‘im. I miss ‘im, Alex. I wish you could’ve met ‘im, you’d ‘ave liked ‘im.” Alex smiled, taking his hand that still lay on her thigh and putting it to her lips. “Me brother’s another kettle of fish completely. ‘E’s an arse, ‘e went into the army an’ became a thug. Married some poor Irish bird, bought ‘er ‘ome an’ bullied ‘er. I ended up arrestin’ me older brother for domestic violence, successfully prosecuted too. ‘E don’t speak t’ me anymore, little wonder. “When our dad died, I aspired to be like me brother more than I ‘ad before until I realised what a bastard ‘e were, ‘atin’ what ‘e’d become. Couldn’t give a monkey ‘bout ‘im now.” “Really? You might need one another one day.” “Alex, I’ve got everyone I need,” he stared deeply into her eyes, showing her his deepest feelings. “So what ‘bout you? Parents, what ‘appened?” “Like Molly said, my parents were blown up in a car bomb and, had I not got out of the car to fetch my balloon that had blown off, I would’ve been killed as well. I have flashbacks to the event but I don’t remember much about it, there was a strange looking man that we drove past and when I got out of the car I saw him stood watching the burning wreck. Another strange man took my hand and carried me off. Evan was there too. I think the man that shielded me from the car was a policeman but I can’t be sure, because I always assumed he carried me into the police station and then talked to Evan for quite a while before Evan finally took me home. I had no-one, Evan was my godfather so the most natural choice to bring me up.” “’E didn’t do a bad job, Alex, I mean you might be dirty in the bedroom but you got manner’s when they’re required.” “Thanks, I think. And I haven’t begun to show you just how dirty I can be yet.” “Salmon, madam?” The unnoticed waitress asked, making Alex blush profusely whilst Gene began laughing at her. “Thanks,” Alex said, hanging her head and beating her fist upon Gene’s leg as his fillet steak was placed in front of him. They waited for the waitress to wander off before Gene picked up his glass and offered it to her by way of a toast. “’Ere’s to even dirtier sex, cheers” he said, only loud enough so that she could hear. She clinked her glass against his, “cheers!” They both took a mouthful of the wine before tucking into their chosen dishes. “So, what kind of life am I to become accustomed too then, Mr Hunt?” “Oh, all the usual stuff. Full time wife an’ mother with a job on the side. I expect you t’ pick up me dirty socks an’ me undies, keep the ‘ouse clean, take care of the kids, ‘ave me dinner ready,” he began smiling as he reeled his list off. “Do you fancy another thump?” “No, only teasin’. If we’re both workin’ then everythin’ gets divvied up. Not bad with an ‘oover or an iron. Like cookin’ an’ I love gardenin’.” “Never took you for a gardener. Must be your way of tackling stress.” “Nah, have other ways of tacklin’ that,” he raised his eyebrows up at her. She laughed at him, “Alex, I ‘ope you’ll like the ‘ouse?” “I’m sure I’ll love it, tell me about it.” “Well, it’s a four bed semi, large livin’ room, kitchen/diner and separate dinin’ room, utility room, downstairs loo, 3 good sized bedrooms, one box room an’ a large bathroom. Then there’s a garage an’ a shed. Bit of a garden at the front an’ ‘uge garden out the back. Plenty of room for the kids’ t’ mess about in anyhow.” He squeezed her leg as she smiled lazily back. “Did you mean what you said, ‘bout kids?” Alex nodded, “of course, Molly is everything to me Gene but I never just wanted the one child. Maybe this was the right way of doing things; we’re both in a better position to have more children now. I mean, I’m even going to be able to give up work for a while if I need to or do some consultancy work instead. I can concentrate on bringing them up better then by spending more time with them.” “You’ve really thought ‘bout it ‘aven’t you?” “Yes, for a while now. If I’m truly honest, from the first time I recognised I wanted you back. You know, that coffee shop has a lot to answer for.” “Mmm, I’m glad I lied to you then.” He said, jokingly. “Lied to me?” “I wanted t’ spend time with you alone an’ that were the only way I could think of doin’ it so you’d accept. Still got the fantasy to live out too, ‘aven’t we?” She nodded, “Well, I’m glad you lied to me, same as I’m glad you managed to instigate some alone time for us at Lyme Park, like the bit we’ve got tonight.” “Got to get as much in as I can before I leave ‘aven’t I?” “I’m going to miss you.” “Yeah,” he breathed out, the faintest smile wandering his lips. “But it won’t be for long. What do you want me t’ do ‘bout the ‘ouse? Most of the furniture is very old and very mine.” “Why don’t we just wait until Molly and I get there, our stuff can go in storage for a while and we can decide if we need to decorate when we arrive.” “Ok. Alex?” “Yes?” “We’re not goin’ t’ wait long before we’re married are we?” “No, if I could marry you tomorrow I would, we’ll sort that out at the same time, ok?” “Yep, I already know where I’m takin’ you on honeymoon.” “Where?” “It’s a surprise, but we won’t need t’ spend too much time outside the luxury villa, unless you want t’ that is.” “With all the consummating we’ll be doing, I take it?” “Someat like that.” “All this talk is making me feel hot. Finish your wine Gene; I need to get you back to our room asap.” “No problem,” he knocked back his glass, paid for the meal and soon he was escorting her from the restaurant. “Do you think we’ve got time t’ walk or do you need a taxi.” “Taxi, definitely a taxi!” .oOo. Gene lay awake in the dark, his mind full of what had happened and what was about to happen in his life. He looked down from his elevated position over Alex’s profile as she lay against him; her arms folded around his torso, his own were around her body nestling over her naked back. He trailed his eyes up her spine and over the mass of dark brown waves that fell over her shoulder and onto the bed beside them. Her face was calm and serene as her soft breathing tickled the hair that lay on his chest. He settled back, his hands absently following the line of her spine up into her hair and twirling the ends around in his fingers. His eyes shut as he began to think again about what it had taken to get him to this point, reminding himself of his first meetings with Alex those ten years previously and how he’d managed to find out it was her and not his wife, Rebecca. A tear trailed down his cheek and over his ear as he recalled taking Rebecca to hospital to have their son and the events that transpired afterward. His eyes fluttered open as he felt Alex stir; she laid a kiss on his chest before looking up to his face. “What’s wrong, Gene?” Alex asked, as she moved up the bed so that her face was inches away from his, her concern evident as she began stroking her fingers through his hair. He closed his eyes again trying to block out the way his thoughts had taken him, shaking his head as he enjoyed Alex’s caresses. “Don’t tell me there’s nothing wrong. Come on, I told you about my parents earlier, I need you to tell me now. No secrets, no lies, that’s the only way we can move forward.” He nodded, knowing she was right. “I were just thinkin’, ‘bout thin’s.” “Like?” “Like you an’ ‘ow lucky I am to ‘ave you. An’ Molly, of course. Then I got t’ thinkin’ ‘bout us havin’ more children and I thought of Becky.” “When you took her to have the baby?” He nodded again, another tear escaping from his other eye, “I just kept thinkin’ that it could ‘appen t’ you, that I could lose you in the same way I lost ‘er.” She lent up kissing at the corner of the lid wiping away the tear as it began to make its way down the same track of its predecessors. He smiled, finding her head with his hands and bringing her face to meet his, “kiss me, Alex. I need t’ know you’re really ‘ere.” She did, finding his lips with her own and bruising them with her forceful protestations. She pulled away momentarily, “Gene, I’ll always be here with you. I will never leave you.” “Don’t say that,” he whispered, “please, you don’t know that you’ll never leave. Becky never knew did she?” “No, she didn’t, but I had a good pregnancy with Molly, the only thing I really suffered from was morning sickness and swollen ankles. Oh, and a strange craving for pickled gherkins,” she sniggered, feeling his body rack with laughter beneath her, “So you see, I really don’t think you have anything to worry about.” Her hands were in his hair again. “I can’t promise that there won’t be complications, I obviously much older than I was before but I have been through it once so it will be easier this time and medical practices are a lot better these days, there are more choices open to us to make things go more smoothly.” It was now Gene’s turn to question, “like what?” “Like better birthing procedures, only taking you in when you’re ready. The different drugs that are available, different birthing methods, like having the baby in a birthing pool, I should even be able to have a home birth if we choose to with a midwife present. There are lots of different options to make sure both the baby and I are safe. I know you’ll worry, it’s only natural, I think I’d be the same if I were in your shoes.” “Thank you, for understanding.” “My pleasure, now if you’ll excuse me there’s a male body with my name on it.” She smirked at him before dipping her head down and kissing his chest, over his nipples and down to his groin. “What are you doin’?” “Showing my man that I’m really here.” He heard her say before she silenced herself by taking his growing arousal into her mouth and pleasuring him. .oOo. Evan handed Gene the tumbler of scotch motioning for Gene to join him in the front room. Alex and Molly were busy making lunch and it had given Gene the space he’d needed to question Evan about Alex’s parents. “Evan, can you tell me anythin’ ‘bout Alex’s parents an’ ‘ow they died?” “What has Alex told you?” Evan countered. “Not much, only that if she ‘adn’t ‘ave got out of the car when she ‘ad then she’d be dead too. That she remembers seein’ two strange men, one that watched the burnin’ wreck an’ one that shielded ‘er from the sight. She said that you were there and she thinks the man that looked after ‘er were a policeman.” “That’s about it I’m afraid, nothing much to tell. No one was ever found to lay claim to the bombing and in the end it was just forgotten about.” “That don’t seem right though, why would it just be forgotten ‘bout. It’s murder after all.” “Yes, but there were no leads, nothing substantial to pin anything to anyone.” “Sorry, Evan, I don’t buy that an’ I’m sure Alex doesn’t either.” “She was an 8 year old child when it happened, Gene. I don’t suppose she cares much, she’s never spoken to me about it and although she loved her parents she never really felt like they loved her very much.” “What do you mean?” “They were always working, left her at school a lot of the time. Tim used to read to her but Caroline, well she would allow Alex to sit with her when she was working but sent her to her room most of the time to do her homework. I vowed I’d never do that to Alex, she deserved so much more. I encouraged her to do her homework but I tried never to take work home with me and did all the things with her that a parent should do. I have to admit, I think she’s done an absolutely brilliant job with Molly even though she does spend too much time away from her.” “She was a single mother, Evan; it must ‘ave been difficult for ‘er, balancing ‘ome an’ work. I only wish I’d known sooner, I’d ‘ave done all I could do become a part of ‘er life again.” “I don’t doubt that, and I’m hearing good things from Molly too. That little girl loves you very much; I trust that the feelings run both ways.” “Yeah, Evan they do. She’s wonderful, my little girl, so bright and beautiful, just like ‘er mother.” Evan nodded, smiling. “Yes, you’ll do very well. I understand that you’ll all be moving up to Manchester together.” “Yeah, I just ‘ope it don’t take Alex too long t’ sort thin’s out, can’t wait to get settled.” “Don’t worry I’ve already done what I can to get her out of her lease and I have a friend that will help move her and store her stuff until she’d ready for it. So it’s just the transfer that really needs sorting and Molly’s school, of course.” “Well, I’ve already sorted out ‘er transfer up she just needs a signature this end but she’s got no DI at the moment so we’re ‘opin’ the DCI will sort it out.” “That’s good, so it won’t be too long then. And then the wedding.” “Mmm, ‘as Alex asked you ‘bout lookin’ after Molly whilst we’re away, we’ll wait ‘til the school ‘olidays naturally.” “She asked and I’d said I’d love to, it’s about time I had a holiday of my own and I’ve only ever been to Manchester once before, about 20 years ago actually.” “Oh right, changed a bit since then you know.” “Everything does.” He got up from his seat, “something smells good, it seems that dinner might just be ready.” He disappeared from the room. Gene got up and made his way slowly through to the kitchen. Something was wrong with Alex’s parents death, he could tell, his gut feeling was that Evan knew more than he was letting on and Gene had to find out what. He knew that he was treading a dangerous path but if it meant that Alex learnt the truth then that was better than never knowing or caring how and why it had happened. He’d make it a priority when he got back home but now he was just going to enjoy what little time he had left with both Alex and Molly before they were all apart for a while.
