After Rick had Lori calmed down and offered some words of comfort, he spent most of the night wide awake, looking at a map of local places for long term shelter. He saw a prison about two hours away. Life in a prison. It may not be ideal, but it's something. The group; Rick, Lori, Carl, Judith, Luke, Mika, Bobby, Alex, Shane, Andrea, Jacqui, Carol, Merle, Daryl, Glenn, Morgan, Jenny and Duane planned on hitting the road at sunrise. Before they left, Andrea pulled Lori aside and asked what typed of feminine products they have left in the store.
"Well, I grabbed all the tampons and pads, and just in case a bunch of condoms."
"Good for you. What about other stuff?"
"Like what?"
"Jesus, are you that fucking stupid? I'm going in by myself."
"Andrea, wait." Shane ran after her. "I'm going with you."
"I have had it with all this 'protect the women' bullshit! I can do this on my own!"
She ran into the store, and came out minutes later clutching a brown paper bag. The two went over to where Rick was standing.
"So, boss man, what's the plan? How are you going to keep everyone safe?" Shane asked.
Rick noticed that Bobby was hiding behind Lori and crying when Andrea was yelling.
"Andrea, calm down. Yelling like that won't solve any problems."
"It's the end of the fucking world, Grimes." Andrea snarked.
"And you're blaming that on me too?"
"I'm asking you what you are going to DO!"
"Andrea, Rick is doing everything he can to keep us safe. Nobody knows what's a mile down the road. If you and Shane want to leave and try this world on your own, go ahead. Otherwise, shut the fuck up." Lori told her bluntly.
"I told you all days ago that Fort Benning was our best bet, and we wasted time at the CDC. We could be there right now." Shane added.
"Well, we're not, and we need to get moving." Rick replied.
"WHERE?" yelled Shane.
"Shane, you and Andrea can leave anytime. I'm going to look for shelter for my family and everyone else here." Said Rick.
Before Shane could say anything else, Rick motioned for Morgan, Daryl, Merle and Glenn to join him in the RV. He opened the door, and led Lori, Carl, Duane, and the little kids inside. They looked at Dale's old map, and Rick mentioned the prison.
"Western Georgia Correctional Facility." Merle chuckled.
"What about it?" Rick asked."
"I spent some time there a while back. It's safe. Twenty foot walls, barbed wire fences, guard towers."
"It could be a goldmine." Rick said, and looked at Lori, who nodded.
"Okay then...we go to prison." Rick chuckled. "First we should siphon gas from these cars and hit the Home Depot to look for anything we can use as a weapon. If we see a police station on the way we stop and get guns and ammo."
"We should save on ammo. It doesn't last forever." Morgan added.
"Agreed. Well, let's get to work." Rick said.
Lori stayed with Duane, Carl, and the kids and made sure they had plenty of breakfast. She went through the bags she got from Kohl's and gave them their new clothes. Shane and Andrea were in the back of their car, having sex again. About an hour later, Merle and Daryl were both driving cars they got from the parking lot. Merle was driving a sedan, and Daryl a pickup. The back of the pickup was loaded with gas cans, full of gas they siphoned from the other cars. Rick thought the more cars the better, in case something happens to one. They drove an hour down the road, and stopped at a small store, to see if they can get any more supplies.
Carl and Duane were in the middle of the street, playing catch with a football they found along the way.
Everyone jumped when they heard a shotgun blast, and Carl fell to the ground. Shane and Daryl raised their weapons and aimed them at the woods, while Rick screamed and held his son. Morgan began to treat Carl. He was shot in the lower stomach. Lori ran out of the RV and screamed, and Rick held her back the best he could. Shane pulled an older man out of the woods, who said that two miles up the road is a retired combat medic, the name "Greene" is on the mailbox. Morgan and Lori helped carry Carl into Merle's sedan, and Rick sped down the road, pulled into the driveway and honking the horn for attention. An older man got out, and Rick said he needed help. Rick got out of the car, and carried a limp Carl into the house.
"Was he bitten?"
"Shot...by your man."
"Otis?"
"Please help my boy. Please."
Morgan said he is a general physician, and was trying to help. They both worked on Carl, who was losing a lot of blood. Rick held onto a nearly hysterical Lori, trying to hold her up on her feet. Hershel asked Rick to take Lori into the other room. As he was leading her away she was crying "no, please, I want to stay...my baby boy. I want to stay...please."
Rick had to carry her into the living room, and were both given water by one of Hershel's daughters, who introduced herself as Maggie. She pointed to a young blonde girl and said "that's my sister, Beth."
Rick nodded thanks, and drank the water. He tried to get Lori to drink some, but she refused. With the heat and the sudden trauma, Rick insisted she drink the water. He rubbed her back, and they both sat together. The waiting was horrible. Morgan came out of the room, and said that they got the pellets, but Carl is heavily sedated. He should make a full recovery.
It took a while, but Carl was back on his feet. The Greenes welcomed Rick's group, and gave them shelter, medical care, food and water. The item Andrea grabbed from the store was a pregnancy test, and that was the main thing she and Shane would argue about. Shane thought it was insane to bring a new baby into this world, and would wait until the entire group was around before saying that there are already too many mouths to feed. The summer passed, and they had birthday parties for the five small Grimes children. They wanted to keep things as normal as normal can be in this new world. Hershel allowed Rick and Lori and the kids to sleep inside. Sleep was a luxury, even with the limited amount of medication and sedatives Hershel had. One evening an Atlanta thunderstorm rolled in, with torrential rain and thunder clap so intense the house felt as though it was shaking.
Six year old Lori Wilson was running around the house. It wasn't playtime. She was running away from her father. He had gotten his belt and whipped her across the bare butt a few times, and she knew what was going to happen. He was drunk. She ran under the kitchen table, hiding. He flipped it over. Mom was out with Connie. Mommy, I wish you were here now. I need help. After he flipped over the table he pulled her by the hair to his bedroom. "Daddy...no...please...it hurts. Daddy, please stop it." Her cries fell on deaf ears. He was gonna get what he wanted. He threw her on the bed and tore off her clothes. He got on top of her and held her by the throat. "I'll kill mommy. Don't tell anyone." He took down his pants. She looked at what he was holding. It looked like a little hose. He got on top of her. "Owww...no...please, stop. Daddy...please..." He stopped but told her to sit up. He sprayed warm white stuff on her face. He told her to clean herself up and go fix the table. He started snoring. She fell out of his bed and hurt. She was crying when she ran to her bedroom and put her clothes back on. Her mom came home and asked her why the table was on its side. She yelled at Lori to fix it. Mom went into the bedroom and started yelling at Dad. He grabbed his belt again and ran around, looking for Lori. She was in the corner. He was still naked. She was so scared. He ran over to her and raised the belt again.
Lori jumped awake. She listened to the sound of the rain, and her stomach clenched when she herd the thunder. The rational part of her brain told her that the bastard was dead. But she still waited for her father to come into the room.
In the two months since Rick sped down Hershel's driveway with a profusely bleeding Carl, Beth and Daryl went from harmless flirting to sharing their first kiss. Rick and Lori were still in the house, Shane and Andrea were in their tent having sex, and Beth asked Daryl how to use his crossbow. He got behind her and helped her aim it at a knot on a tree, helping her hold the heavy weapon. She could feel his muscular arms around her, his hands gently on hers, showing her how to line up something in her sights. After a few hours together, and with some flirting around the farm and at meals, she was in the tack room of the horse stable. He looked around for Hershel and didn't see him, the redneck walked into the area and up to Beth, who smiled and asked if it's time for arrow practice.
She didn't get the words out before he walked right up to her, cupped her face in his hands, and kissed her deeply. He shoved his tongue in her mouth, and held her close, with a firm grip on her ass. She didn't know what to do at first. She and Jimmy would share a chaste kiss away from her father, but Daryl's arms were so strong. She dropped a saddle she was holding and put her arms around him, first the back of his head, then on his back. He stopped and seemed to jump, almost in fear and embarrassment, before looking into her green eyes and walking away.
They would always be mindful of where Hershel was, and when she was picking crops one day, he came over to talk to her, telling her that Hershel is watching. He said he was sorry for leaving so quickly, but that he has a bad back. He didn't want to get her in trouble, since he knew what an angry father could do, so he asked her to be casual. She nodded her head, and started pointing in the distance, like someone who is giving directions. She said it was fine, and she enjoyed the kiss. Maybe they could do it again. Daryl nodded in thanks and said they will. He smiled and walked away.
Two days later they were in the stable, which offered a full view of the house. They were kissing passionately, Beth watching the house as Daryl had his arm up her shirt, holding her breast and thumbing her hard nipple. She looked in his eyes and said she's a virgin and doesn't want to get pregnant. They have to find a time, when her daddy is asleep and not paying attention. He doesn't know about Maggie, and she wants to keep it that way about herself. Daryl nodded yes, and went back to kissing her. He had her backed into a corner, and was pressing the bulge in his pants near her groin, easy to do since she was holding his ass firmly against her and kept her legs open.
"Dang...dang it...Daddy's coming out. We gotta stop."
"Shit." Daryl said.
Hershel was heading right towards them, so Daryl grabbed a brush and started to tend to one of the horses, while Beth cleaned the saddles. Hershel walked into the place and thanked them for doing what he was about to do. Daryl said he was happy to help for the meals and water.
The three talked for a while, Daryl happy that the smell of horse shit didn't make his erection last long. Hershel was telling the redneck about the history of the farm, and that it's been in his family for generations. He asked Beth to pick some crops for dinner, and the walked out, leaving Daryl by himself. He watched Beth as she walked over to the fields, keeping an eye on her ass.
Hershel was impressed at how easily Rick and Lori accepted Luke, Mika, Bobby and Alex as their own children.
Dinner that night was relaxed for Rick, who kept one hand on Lori's knee, under the table. Shane was sitting across from them next to Andrea.
Hershel raised his glass and offered a toast, especially to Carl for his recovery, and welcomed "most" of the group as a nice new addition to their family. The conversation flowed easily, Beth asked what happened in the city.
"Not now, Bethie." Hershel corrected his daughter. Dinner was not the time for such a conversation.
"They dropped napalm in the city." Shane added.
"Napalm?" Maggie asked, her voice incredulous.
"Yep. That shit's nasty." Shane answered.
"Watch your language in my house." Hershel snapped.
"Alright. Napalm is nasty. It burns everything. Whoever was in the city is dead now."
"But...there were people there. Regular people. Why would they do that? Why would they kill so many people?" Beth asked, her voice quivering.
"It's alright," Daryl said to the young blonde. "The city was full of those things. Probably thought that was the best way."
"But, the normal people..."
"Collateral damage." Shane said coldly.
Beth and Daryl weren't the only ones with a new romance. Glenn and Maggie were a new couple, and one night Glenn wanted to surprise Maggie with a night in the hayloft. That's when he discovered the barn's secret.
