(The metal door to the holding areas clanks and begins to open. Marines, diplomat and giant all turn to watch.)
(Chuck enters, escorted by a dozen guards and an older woman, Sara. Two guards stay at the open door, two take positions by the cell door, one stays beside Chuck, one stands near Sara. The other six line up across the hallway from the Earthling's cell.)
Sara: Hello. My name is Sara. I'm one of the Scholars. I've been sent to talk to you. Chuck tells me you still hope to figure out how to return to Earth.
Janet: Well, to be more correct-
Vertag: (To Sara) Chuck is an idiot.
Chuck: Watch it.
Vertag: (To Sara) Seriously. These people are not just from Earth, they came here by space ship, not by the worm hole. And their ships are still in orbit. (Turns to Chuck) Of course, the real Order of the Lock would already know that.
Chuck: I'm getting a bit tired of your insolence.
Vertag: I'd get used to it, if I were you. Or any of your fellow imposters.
Chuck: You'll notice that you're Earthling sized? Only the Order could accomplish that.
Vertag: I've read files of kids in third level Biochemistry that could do that. Next boast?
Chuck: You haven't figured it out, have you? You're not the giant any more. You actually have to fear a human who's not afraid of you.
Vertag: Of course not. Not on the other side of these bars.
Chuck: Open the cell! (A guard opens the door)
Vertag: Yeah. Very brave. If this woman isn't involved, it's still going to be thirteen to one if I step out there.
Chuck: Fine. If he comes out, no one is to touch him. He's mine! Unless he's too scared.
Vertag: Fine. (steps out into the passageway. Sara moves away from him, the guards tense, Chuck starts flexing his fists) (To Sara:) Nothing to worry about, Miss. Chuckles and I are just going to- (he takes off running, bursting past the guards and through the doorway. A few surprised shouts off camera)
Chuck: What the? Why didn't you stop him?!
Guard1: You said to leave him alone.
Chuck: I didn't mean… Arrrrrgh!
-----
Roll Titles
-----
Guard2: You should have been more specific, then.
Chuck: Shut that damned cell! After him! (ten guards take off after Vertag. The two bodyguards stay)
Sara: (To the Earthlings) Why is he running away?
Janet: He is trying to see if physical exertion helps throw off the effects of the shrinking serum.
Perez: Janet!
Janet: Honesty is going to be our best tool, Major.
Sara: Really? That's too bad, the serum doesn't work that way.
Chuck: Well, yeah, um. It does.
Sara: No it doesn't. It used to. But the new version…
Chuck: That's not what they shrank him with.
Sara: I thought it was agreed…
Chuck: Oh, yeah. His next dose. Once this one started to wear off, sure. But the field teams only have the old stuff.
Sara: So…there's an angry tiny giant in the city that could turn into a real giant giant at any moment.
Chuck: Uh….yeah..
Sara: And what are you going to do about it?
Chuck: Well, I already made sure everyone knows that I'm not the one that didn't order the field teams to restock-
Sara: About THE GIANT?!
Chuck: Oh. I, uh, should go coordinate his capture, right? (Sara stares) Right. (leaves, guard tags along)
Janet: You know, if you let us go, we could talk him out of doing anything dangerous once he's back to normal.
Sara: I'm tempted, really. But I don't trust you.
Janet: No one on this planet trusts me. It's very disconcerting.
Sara: Do you trust me?
Janet: I want to. Look, we really do have a way to get everyone off the planet. Back to Earth. No giants, no paranoid dictatorship.
Shaver: Ahem.
Janet: No paranoid GIANT dictatorships, no technology vampires. Everything, including plants and animals, all to the same, delightful scale.
Sara: And on weekends we'll dance on the rainbows with the butterfairies and cloud kittens.
Janet: Yeah. I know it sounds too good to be true. We run into this with about every refugee. But if you send a delegation, we can show you the ships. Keep me as a hostage, let Perez and Vertag take you to where we can contact the Fleet.
Perez: (sarcastically) Vertag's going to love that plan.
Sara: (Laughs) So now, in addition to trusting you, I'm supposed to trust the giant?!?! To help you help me get to Earth?
Janet: Uh…
Vertag: Whooooo-HOOO! (all turn to see the giant in the doorway. He's about half-again as big as he was. The cloth is stretched, starting to tear. He tosses something into the cage, a Marine catches it) Look what I found! (shouting off screen) Whoops! Gotta go! (runs off. A few crashing sounds off screen)
(The Marine is shown handing his catch to Perez. It is a pistol. She chambers a round and points it at Sara's head)
Perez: I think we're in a better bargaining position now, Janet.
Janet: Give her the gun, Damerae.
Perez: What?
Sara: What?
Shaver: What?
Styles: I thought so.
Perez: Janet, I really think…
Janet: We need their trust. It's the only way we've ever won anyone over on this planet.
Styles: Unless we take a flamethrower to their spider.
Sara: Flamethrower?
Styles: It's this really cool weapon we have. I think your guys captured one or two. It's like a-
Janet: Yes, fine, we'll show you all our toys. And our spaceships. The Earth you all deserve. If you don't want to trust us right off, then tell me what it'll take. How can we prove to you that we have an orbital presence, that we can get you home? What can we do?
Sara: Well…. If you were to-
(A giant hand thrusts into the room. Two fingers flick the guard against the far wall. The hand sweeps back to the cell, fingers twist the metal of the door open. Then it grabs Sara and pulls her, screaming, out through the door)
Vertag: (Off screen and terribly loud) Time to go, gang! Now! You guys! Back off, or I rip her head off!
Sara: (Off screen) (screaming) Back! Back away!
Janet: Vertag! NO!
(Earthlngs stumble through Vertag's wreckage. Styles points at the fallen guard, two Marines rush over to help him. The rest run through the door.)
(There's a large chamber outside the jail cells. A large cone-shaped ceiling channels sunlight down from a hole. The cone would be a tight squeeze for Vertag, but not impossible. The giant sits naked against a wall, holding Sara in one hand. He holds a piece of furniture to fend off the spear-wielding guards.)
Vertag: Back off. Back off. Janet, where are you?
(The Earthlings run out of the door. They're about at Vertag's hip.)
Janet: Vertag! Put her down!
Vertag: What?
(Chuck steps out from beside the door, grabs Janet and puts a knife to her throat. Pulls her to the side, away from surprised Perez and Shaver)
Chuck: Let Sara go or I'll kill your friend!
(Shaver starts to step forward, Perez smiles and stops him with a hand on his arm. She gestures and the enlisted Marines stop moving forward.)
Vertag (Looks around, smiles): Heh. The funny thing is, if Janet thought that her death would resolve the situation, she'd let you.
Chuck: You think I'm kidding?! I'll-
(Janet interrupts him. Stomps his toes, kicks her heel into his balls, twists the knife-hand until there's a popping sound. Knife skitters over to Shaver's feet. He picks it up. Stands by Perez who still holds the pistol.)
Janet: (stomping away from where Chuck kneels, holding his arm) PUT THE WOMAN DOWN!
Vertag: Yes, ma'am. (Smiles as he lowers Sara to stand beside Janet. Assembled guards stare. A few start to step forward, Sara gestures and they stop)
Janet: Are you alright?
Sara: Um…Yes. I think so. (looks down at Chuck) At least the giant didn't hurt me as bad as you… (looks Janet up and down) I guess I should thank you for not killing him. And… (waves at Vertag) for saving me.
Janet: He wouldn't have hurt you.
Sara: You're sure of that?
Perez: (walks up, hands the pistol out to Sara) Yes. He knows Janet would never forgive him.
(Sara stares at the Earthlings. Two Marines step out of the cell room, supporting the stunned guard between them. Shaver holds the knife by the blade, handle towards Sara. She finally shakes her head.)
Sara: Keep them. I'm more interested in how you (points to Janet) control him. (nods at Vertag)
Janet: Oh, trust, honor, friendship…
Styles: Lasers, bombs…
Perez: Blackmail, conspiracy…
Janet: The usual.
Vertag: (reaches down to pat Janet on the head.) It's complicated, but it is real. So. Can we go home now?
Sara: I… I'm not sure the other Scholars will agree to that.
Janet: Well, can we discuss a delegation to see the Fleet? Maybe with hostages kept here to allay suspicions?
Vertag: Oh, no.
Janet: Shut up. You don't have to offer yourself up as a hostage.
Vertag: But you're going to. Okay. Fine. If someone could drag my trousers in here…?
Sara: It would be easier to…feed and house him, if he were to submit to the serum.
Janet: I wouldn't push it.
Vertag: No, no. (sourly) She's right. If you're going to get them to trust you, I can't be looming overhead. And they won't let me just walk out of here. So, shoot me up. Or down. Whatever.
Janet: (with a smile) Really?
Sara: (in shock) Really?
Perez: Quick, before he changes his mind.
Vertag: Thanks a lot, Major.
Perez: Just trying to help.
Sara: Well. Um. (raises her voice) Is there a field unit in the chamber?
(Two guards with a large needle edge around the chamber to Sara's position, giving Vertag a wide berth.)
(Vertag frowns and leans over on his elbow. Janet steps to his wrist and strokes it.)
Janet: Now, be a big boy, don't flinch, and you'll get a lollipop when we're done.
Vertag: For this? I want two lollipops.
Sara: Once it's taken effect, we can move you to better quarters.
-------
(shifts to a large suite on the upper tier of the city. Earthlings and a tiny Vertag are led by Sara into a wide, airy room that opens up onto a balcony. A distinct improvement over the cells, Marines spread out and investigate many smaller rooms and communal areas. Janet and Styles wander to the balcony, look down the stone face to the distant ground. Sara watches, mostly eyeing the giant for his reaction)
Janet: Nice view.
Perez: Plush digs.
(A surly looking Vertag, dressed in the rough clothes of the Order, stands in the middle of the main room. The ceiling is about ten feet over his head, the walls twenty feet away.)
Vertag: Kinda cramped, isn't it?
Janet: Speaking as someone that's been in your pocket, Vertag…
Perez: You don't know what cramped truly is. (she walks past him, pats him on the shoulder and starts calling for Marines) Shaver! Get the heavy weapons people together.
Shaver: Major? I thought we were cooperating peacefully…(glances at Sara)
Perez: Exactly. I want to set up a demonstration. (turns to Sara) Some of the weapons you took can kill a giant. I doubt that they'd let us carry them if we were working for them. So, if we can have some, and go out and blow the shit out of something big, a tree or a building, maybe it'll help convince you of our story.
Sara: That's...going to be interesting.
Janet: (stepping beside Vertag) Would that cheer you up, Agent Vertag? Destroying something? (Sara starts to speak, Vertag holds up a hand)
Vertag: No, Janet. Don't arm me. (Sara relaxes) Um, are there any other giants in the…Order? Anyone I could talk to about life here?
Sara: Giants…don't tend to last too long in the Order.
Janet: What? Is Vertag in danger?
Sara: No, no, not really. Not if all goes well. But we don't get many giant refugees. We get giants that stumble across our city as they travel the wilderness. Treasure hunters, bounty hunters, poachers…
Vertag: Ah.
Janet: What? What insight did you just get?
Vertag: Men that don't live well within a structured society. Loners.
Perez: Oh. Okay.
Janet: What? What am I missing?
Styles: Oh, I get it. (turns to Janet) Imagine some lone wolf. Doesn't work or play well with others.
Janet: So they kill him for not fitting in?
Styles: No, but if he loses his temper and starts a fight, especially if the serum's about to wear off…?
Janet: Oh. Then he exerts himself giant. And if they're indoors at the time… Eugh. (all react, wincing or grimacing)
Vertag: Is it okay if I sleep on the balcony?
(All humans in the room): Yes!
(Shift to a dirt path outside the city. Tree branches arch overhead as Perez and Shaver organize some Marines with their heavies. Sara and some guards watch. Sara is close, while the guards stand some distance back)
Sara: I'm sorry that the other Scholars can't be at this demonstration, Perez.
Perez: That's alright. When they hear the rumors about this, they'll ask for another one. Lieutenant? Are we ready to cut down some tree?
(shift to a stone chamber. Janet and Styles wait outside some ornate doors with Chuck and some guards. Chuck's arm is in a sling.)
Janet: Look, we just want to explain the situation to your scholars. Sara agreed-
Chuck: Under duress. With that giant looming over her, she couldn't think straight.
Styles: Oh, I think SHE is thinking straight.
Janet: Shut up, Styles. Chuck, that's part of the point. You have an opportunity here to completely escape any giant threats. Including giant animals, giant wilderness.
Chuck: The Order is quite comfortable in the wilderness, Miss Crane. Especially here. The mountains around us have a powerful effect on any and all technologies that might detect us.
(Shift to the command deck of the Excelsior. Admiral walks in, nods to the Commander. She nods back. During the conversation, both of them look at the screens instead of each other, watching over the heads of the techs.)
Admiral: Anything, Commander?
Commander: No, sir. There's no solid information coming from their last known position. It's like there's a big scrambler running over an area about the size of Rhode Island.
Admiral: We put any eyes on it?
Commander: A few probes in overflight. But the visual report is that there are a lot of big trees down there. The pilots aren't in a hurry to enter the canopy. Not without a better idea of where to look.
Admiral: What about infra red?
Commander: As always, when a squirrel's the size of a family vehicle, the heat signatures of humans get lost in the background.
Admiral: Well, keep an eye out. The people down there can be quite inventive. They'll figure something out.
Commander: That's what we're counting on, sir.
(Down in the path, weapons start shooting. Three Marines fire rockets in rapid succession. A fourth fires three rockets by himself. Then three more Marines fire their weapons)
Perez: Cease fire!
Sara: (Peering through the smoke) You didn't cut down the tree.
Perez: No, but we sure did hurt it. Let's take a look at the damage, and imagine that we did this to a giant's leg or chest. Then we'll do it again.
(Cut to the command deck. The Admiral is walking away.)
Commander: Admiral!
Admiral: What? (he turns back to see some flashes on a monitor) What was that?
Commander: Replay that!
Tech1: Yes, ma'am.
(Closeup on the screen. A topographic map of a valley shows. A few dots here and there. Then the screen shows three large, quick flashes, then three spaced ones, then three quick ones.)
Admiral: Bam-bam-bam, bam, bam, bam, bam-bam-bam.
Commander: That's SOS.
Admiral: I think we know where to send the pilots, now, Lucy.
Commander: (to a tech) Red Alert! Get me the shuttle commander and the probe boss!
(Down in the city, Janet and Styles storm into the suite. Guards stop at the door and start to close it)
Janet: I can't believe that jackass. He's wasting our time just because he can!
Styles: Well, they can only jerk us around so much before it's taken out of their hands.
Janet: What? How can we force them along?
Styles: We can't. Not exactly.
(From the windows come sounds of explosions. The SOS pattern repeats. Several Marines are at the rails, looking through the trees trying to see the explosions. Vertag comes in off the balcony)
Vertag: If you guys always fight this way, so measured? It would seem very predictable to an enemy.
Janet: Really? I was just thinking the exact opposite. You just have no way of predicting the rest of today.
Vertag: Really?
(Two sonic booms crack the sky outside. Marines cheer, then rush to the common room. They begin throwing furniture around, creating defensive positions facing the front door. Styles grabs Janet and Vertag by the elbows and tugs them to the furthest position back. They crouch down and wait for guards of the Order to break in.)
Vertag: What's going on?
Janet: Told you. No idea.
Vertag: Are you going to tell me?
Janet: Eventually, maybe.
(Out on the path, the Marines fire another set of SOS rounds. The tree they've been blasting falls, in the opposite direction from the city. Once it hits the ground, three streamlined space drop through the new hold in the canopy. They flit through the trees, circling the hole, then circling the city.)
Sara: What are those things? What are they?
Perez: What do you mean? They're not local?
Shaver: They're not yours?
Sara: What? Then whose are they?
(The heavy weapons group clusters together, staring up at the probes. One surreptitiously pulls an electronic wand of some sort out and turns it on. Blue light sparkles inside the cone, out of the Order's sight.)
(Up in the suite, one Marine crouches on the balcony, waving an electronic wand of her own.)
(The probes circle back to the hole in the trees and fly up and out of sight.)
(On the command deck, a tech turns to the Commander)
Tech2: Commander! The probes have positively identified the expedition. Major Perez is requesting immediate extraction in force.
Commander: Admiral? The shuttle is in a holding pattern, request-
Admiral: Permission granted.
(In the suite, guards burst the door open and rush in. They pause at the sight of the Marines in defensive positions. Chuck pushes his way through the ranks to the front)
Chuck: What is going on? Are those things yours? And what are you all doing like this?
Janet: Waiting for our friends to show up.
Chuck: What friends?
(Cracking/crushing sounds from outside. Guards, Chuck, Vertag and Janet turn to face the windows. Leaves, twigs then tree branches fall past the view. Metal from the Inflict's hull drops past. It stops, hovering outside. A hatch in the side opens, a landing ramp extends. A metric buttload of Marines swarm across)
(A series of closeups: Vertag's face in happy surprise, Chuck's face in shock and dismay, Janet proud)
Styles: (grabs bullhorn from leading invader, turns it to the guards) Lay down your weapons, you will not be harmed. Point one sharp goddamned stick at the Marines and you will be reduced to a memory!
(The ramp retracts and the Inflict drops down. The main ramp lowers and armed/armored vehicles swarm through the forest.)
Perez: (turns to Sara's guards) I'd suggest disarming, fellas. Our guys aren't famous for slow trigger fingers. (Fade)
(Fade in. Outside the entrance to the City, an agitated Vertag paces beside a relaxed Janet and Styles. An angry Sara stands between the women, hands in restraints. No one else is in view, though the carvings of the city entrance seem to have taken some damage. A few bullet casings litter the area.)
Sara: This was unnecessary. We could have come to a rational understanding.
Janet: We tried rational. We're not the ones that locked people up with a size-bomb.
Vertag: Oh, funny. Where are they?
Styles: Ten feet further than they were the last time you asked.
Janet: It'll be okay, though. You'll see. You're going back to Earth.
Sara: Maybe we don't want to go to Earth.
Vertag: Trust me, you don't want to stay here. If my government had gotten a hold of you-
(Horns honk inside the city. Three Hummers drive slowly forward. Cables drag behind them. Eventually we see that they're towing Vertag's giant-size pants.)
Vertag: Finally! I really, really didn't want to run around naked again. (He walks towards his belt)
Styles: Awwww. (Vertag turns to glare at her. Janet laughs)
