(Open in Vertag's office. Vertag throwing darts at a target. Lessala watches. They are very bored. The elevator opens and Janet walks out.)
Janet: Hey, guys!
Lessala: Hey, Janet.
Vertag: Hello. What's up?
Janet: Well... We're a little confused.
Lessala: Who's confusing you?
Janet: The Directorate?
Lessala: Ah. His area.
Vertag: What are they doing? Or not doing?
Janet: They doubled the number of cancer cures they're going to prepare and offer us.
Vertag: Yeah, that'll confuse you.
Lessala: Downright chaotic.
Janet: No, but they're closing down the Exchange in Capitol City. Everyone's going to be treated here.
Lessala: Ah.
Vertag: Yes.
Janet: What?
Lessala: Well, first off, what is it that confuses you?
Janet: They...they're really sensitive about the cure, aren't they? (the giants nod) Well, if they were only going to have one treatment center, wouldn't they want it near their headquarters?
Lessala: No.
Vertag: Of course not. (The giants make eye contact, nod to each other, look back at Janet)
Janet: What am I missing?
Vertag: Nothing.
Lessala: Except that SHE is not evil incarnate.
Vertag: That is true. (puts his darts down and sits, scoots the chair up close to where Janet stands). Okay. You're not thinking the way the Directorate would think. Not how they'd behave in your situation.
Janet: How's that?
Lessala: Evil.
Vertag: Shush. If the Directorate had nuclear weapons, and they were on a planet of evil giants, they'd have one nuke here at the Exchange, one under the compound, another one in the sewers at the center of Coastal City to hold the population hostage, yet another one at the far edge so they can blow up some people but not the Exchange and one out in the boonies that they could set off so that people would know they're serious.
Janet: Oh.
Lessala: So, they figure you've done exactly that around all the garrisons you've established.
Janet: But we haven't!
Lessala: They wouldn't believe you.
Vertag: But they also know that if you leave the garrisons, you won't leave a nuke lying around where it might be found. So there won't be nukes in their city after you leave.
Janet: But we're cooperating with them! We haven't threatened them with nukes since the first ten orbits around the planet. Why are they worried now?
Lessala: Nothing you've done-
Vertag: -Just something they're about to do.
Janet: What?
Lessala: I don't know. (brief look of suspicion passes between the giants) But it's going to be something that they think you might think worth setting off a bomb over.
Vertag: But as long as you do it here, in Second Nation, then First Nation'll be safe.
Janet: What could they possibly do that'll lead to nuclear bombs?
Vertag: Well. They double the cancer cures. They give you time to put the word out to your populace. Then they jack up the price. Way up. They're in a hurry, now, to get all the technology they can before you figure out the cure on your own.
Janet: Oh.
Vertag: And...Well, they're probably going to make more overt hostages. After the people are cured, they may make them stay in the other Tank for a week or two.
Janet: That's....
Lessala: Evil. Yeah. Noted.
Vertag: It's even a column on the Performance Evaluation. Solid evil, inventive evil, takes initiative for evil, and so on.
Janet: Oh, god. So? What do we do?
Vertag: That's....up to you guys.
Lessala: And your cancer research.
Janet: (slowly) Yes. Our...research. (she looks guiltily up at Vertag)

(Open inside the compound. Vertag walks along inside the wall. At one of the Marine posts atop the wall, a portable crane on the post lowers a large crew-served gun to the ground. A flatbed is parked nearby. The Marines stop what they're doing as the giant walks up.)
Vertag: Hey, guys! (Mumbled responses of hey, giant return) Taking the heavy weaponry down because of a new era of peace, trust and prosperity?
Marine1: Uh, well, not...
Marine2: I wouldn't say..
Vertag: Or are you just taking it to the EB for maintenance?
Marine1: Overdue maintenance!
Marine2: That's the ticket! Long overdue maintenance. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if most of the weaponry mounted on the walls needed- (Marine1 elbows him in the ribs) Ooof!
Vertag: Alright, makes sense. You guys need any help? Carrying the guns? Lifting the new ones into place?
Marine2: No! No, no, no, we got it. Something to keep us busy. No, we're fine. (all Marines nod. Vertag nods and walks across compound. A flatbed truck passes him with three canvas-covered shapes on it.)
(Cut to inside the office. Lessala at her desk. Vertag walks out of the security door.)
Lessala: Hey, boss. What's up?
Vertag: The humans are going to leave after this course of cancer cures is done. (he moves to his office, starts rummaging through a desk drawer. Lessala stands to move to the doorway and watch him)
Lessala: But that's a few days away. What are you doing now?
Vertag: Well, I hope they have a few days but it's possible that-
(The front door opens and a man in a dark suit walks in. Lessala turns to block Vertag from view. Vertag stands up as if caught doing something and closes the drawer with his leg)
Lessala: Hello? Can I help you?
Disskar: Actually, Miss Lessala, I’m here to take over the Exchange. Agent Vertag? I'm Agent Disskar.
Vertag: Agent Disskar. (steps around Lessala, offers his hand) Never heard of you. So I assume you're from Special Assignment?
(Cut to the Security Tent. Perez monitors the screens while she talks into a phone)
Disskar: (on screen) Yes. I'm tasked with overseeing the new Skirries Relief Effort.
Perez: He said Special Assignment. (pause) Well, I don’t know for sure. (pause) No, I don't know how to spell Disskar. Just find anything you can in the giants' computers. Special Assignment, Exchange, change of command, skirries cure... Whatever you can think of.
(Cut back to the office)
Vertag: So, are you taking charge or taking my place?
Disskar: We'll be moving you out eventually, after a transition. Introduce me to the humans, let me get the feel of the place.
Vertag: Well, would you like a tour?
Disskar: That would be a good start. (Vertag opens the security door, pauses, turns to Disskar)
Vertag: Lessala was just about to go out to get our lunch. Would you like anything?
Disskar: It's a little early.
Lessala: We have to work around the Canc- The Skirries schedule. We're up early for the first sample, then the next is right around lunch time so we get it early.
Vertag: The bakery does pretty good dumplings.
Disskar: I'm sure, but I'm not terribly hungry right now.
Lessala: Okay. (she exits the front door. Vertag and Disskar go through security door)
(Cut to security tent. Usual calm is replaced with frantic activity. Several Marines are running up to grab clipboards and open small procedure books. Marines are talking urgently into headsets, microphones and typing on keyboards)
Perez: (talking into phone) I say again, the Warning has been passed. Condition Dumplings. (ends that conversation, dials up another) Never mind the search on Disskar. Call up the evacuation drill. (covers the mouthpiece) Get the shuttle down here! NOW!
(Cut to the Tank room. Vertag enters first, pointing to the Cure Tank. Disskar is behind him.)
Vertag: And we have the two Tanks. There are about forty humans in here right now. They have three days-
(Behind him, Disskar draws a pistol. Raises it to the back of Vertag's head.)
Vertag: -left on their stay. They'll be transferred to the Marine garrison (cut to a closeup of Vertag's hand. Held out of Disskar's sight, a dagger slips from the sleeve to his grip.)
Disskar: Slight change of-
(Vertag drops just as the gun goes off, missing him. He stabs the knife into Disskar's thigh. Disskar staggers, Vertag grabs the gun. They vie for control. Vertag slowly but steadily brings the barrel towards Disskar's nose)
Vertag: (grunts) You were going to shoot me where the Earthlings could see?
Disskar: (grunts) It would quickly establish the new working relationship.
Vertag: So will this.
(cut to the security tent, Marines are frozen, faces stare at the screen as we hear a gunshot. After a moment they go back to the flurry of activity)
Perez: Oh, that's going to cost us. (shakes her head, talks into phone) No, sir, but Vertag just passed the point of no return.
(Cut to the building across the road, inside the room SID used for surveillance on the Exchange. Two men in dark suits like Disskar's look through the window. Special Assignment men 1 and 2 wait patiently)
SA1: Did you see where the secretary went?
SA2: She had her shopping bag. I assume she went for lunch.
SA1: Do you really want to tell Disskar you assumed something?
SA2: (shakes his head, reaches for phone on a dresser) Better call the- (there is a beeping sound)
(Close up on the top of the window sill they're standing at. Part of it blinks in time with the beeps. Just as they look up, it explodes)
(Cut to the alley. Lessala pushes the antenna down on a remote that has one red button. Walks down the alley, away from the camera. Bits of smoking bricks start to shower the foreground)
(Cut back to the Tank room. Terrified doctors and patients line the glass walls, staring at Vertag as he approaches with pair of transfer cases)
Vertag: Alright. Everyone get to the roof and get in one of these. I'll be back in a moment to take you to the Marines.
(there is a frightened murmur among the Tank residents)
Patient: But...what about the CURE?
Vertag: Is it literally worth dying for? Being hostage to the Directorate until Earth does whatever they're about to ask for? Because if you stay here, that's what you're facing. (he places the cases on the roof, turns to grab Disskar's corpse by the ankles and pull)
(Cut to the Earthling Building. Tanks, APCs, trucks, Hummers and busses are lining along one wall. Some tents collapse as the trucks drive over them. Adams stands in one corner issuing orders. Messengers rush off in all directions.)
Adams: Make sure there are enough busses with empty seats for all the patients, and a clear spot next to them for the transfer cases. (Officer grabs two MPs and runs off)
Perez: (running up) Units from the lookout posts are dropping down to the pickup vehicles.
Adams: Good
Perez: Except Post 14. They detected giant movement in one of the duck blinds. They want to keep an eye on any developments.
Adams: I'll leave that up to the officer in charge. But once the shuttle's in view, they're to get their asses down here and prepare to board!
Perez: Yes, sir. (pauses to put her hand to her ear) Repeat 14? Who is doing what?
(Cut to the back door of the Giant's building. Vertag steps out the back door and carefully carries two packed cases to the EB. He puts them on the ground and opens the wall, like a garage door. The cases slide into a waiting opening and he opens the doors. People file out and straight into waiting busses. He turns and carefully walks towards the Shooting Range)
(Inside the Shooting Range, Millious is handcuffed to one of the robot targets. She's amused herself with a lipstick, drawing a hideous face on it. Vertag enters)
Vertag: You two getting along okay?
Millious: After Evan, I find myself attracted to anyone with shoulders wider than mine. Are you going to kill me? Lessala and that Perez thing have gotten everything out of me.
Vertag: (pulls out a pistol. Millious doesn't flinch) No. (she shrugs. He hands her the handcuff key) Take 'em off.
Millious: Why? (makes no move to comply)
Vertag: Wanna go home?
Millious: Is this a trick?
Vertag: Special Assignment goons are going to be coming in here soon, shooting anyone more than a dibbit tall. You, me, Lessala... I'm more in favor of shooting them. Of you shooting them.
Millious: (unlocks the handcuffs) So, I guess you're going to arm me and let me fight beside you, common cause and enemy of my enemy, all that? (Vertag shrugs and holds out the pistol to her)
Vertag: Something like that.
(Millious takes the gun, chambers a round and points it at Vertag)
Millious: Can I kill you and that bitch instead?
Vertag: I don't know how many SA agents are out there. But if you want to face them alone, minus two of your bullets, that's your decision.
(She stares at him over the sights. Then lowers the gun)
Millious: Where do you want me?
Vertag: Well, the North Wall is about to be cleared...
(Cut to the unimproved lot behind the Exchange. Two SA agents crouch in a small depression and peer through bushes at the Exchange wall. One uses binoculars, the other uses a high powered rifle with a scope.)
SA3: What was that?
SA4: What was what?
SA3: Did you hear-?
(Cut to a closeup of Lessala, peering around a tree. She lifts the remote and pushes the button)
(Cut to the duck blind. The ground erupts, engulfing the two in flame)
(Cut to Lessala. She lowers the antenna and runs to the back gate. It opens and Millious lets her in.)
(Cut to Adams and Perez.)
Perez: Fourteen says never mind, sir, and they're on the way down. (Adams grunts acknowledgement)
(Cut to outside the EB. The three giants walk carefully past the open door. Janet runs into view, shouting Vertag's name. He stops and picks her up)
Janet: Vertag! We need to talk!
Vertag: (does not look down at Janet. He scans the crowd of humans as Lessala and Millious move towards the front building) No time for long goodbyes, Janet. It's been real, it's been great it's-
Janet: Shut up! We're not done here!
Vertag: You have the cure, you have all the Humans. You have to go. Styles! (beckons)
Janet: We DON'T have all the humans.
Vertag: (turns to Janet) Sure you do.
Janet: No. No, we're seeing signs of your government using some advanced technology. Technology we haven't sold them.
Vertag: So we researched and came up with-
Janet: No. This is identical. Down to the coded transmissions for the controls. Look, I don't have time to explain, but your Directorate still has some humans. Including one that invented a pretty powerful system for controlling weapons from a distance.
Vertag: And you want to stay until you find him?
Janet: Her.
Vertag: (rolls eyes) Them. Okay. Look, you guys get out and get into the sky. Stay away from Special Assignment. I'll contact you when we're ready to try to rescue this inventor.
Janet: No, I need to-
Vertag: (turns to the ground. Styles stands by his foot. He lowers Janet to Styles' side.) Make sure she gets on the shuttle, okay?
Styles: You can't really give me orders.
Vertag: Do it or I'll hunt you down and put you in an omelet.
Styles: (Grabs Janet's arm firmly) Yes, sir!
Janet: Vertag!
Vertag: Remember, your communications are not secure. Look for my signal. Okay, Janet?
Janet: (unhappily) Okay. (he walks off) Wait. What signal!? (turns to Styles) What signal?
Styles: Janet, it's Vertag. Whatever he does, there's no chance we'll miss it. Okay?
Janet: Okay... But you'd better be right or-
Styles: Yeah, yeah, you'll throw me in the omelet yourself. Let's get you on a bus.
(Camera rises from Janet. Janet and Styles get smaller and disappear in the milling humanity. Fade out)
(Fade in at the giant's kitchen. Vertag walks past the door as a big knife buries itself in the door frame. He slaps his hand up with the gun pointing at whoever threw it.)
(Cut to a new POV, we see Lessala with two other knives in her hands.)
Lessala: Hey, lover! Just checking these for balance.
Vertag: (relaxing and holstering his weapon) I thought Millious had decided to save a bullet.
Lessala: Oh, no. She's piling furniture into a barricade at the door. (examines one of the knives) You really had her a 'shoot Special Assignment goons.' They have a history.
Vertag: Great. But why are you bothering with kitchen knives?
Lessala: In case we run out of bullets, of course. The question is why aren't YOU getting ready for that?
Vertag: Because I know what's in my secret closet.
Lessala: You don't HAVE a secret closet. I looked.
Vertag: Then it's even more secret than I'd hoped. Want some firepower?
Lessala: (smiles) Have I mentioned I love you?
(Fade out as she takes his arm)
(Fade in to Dordell in his office. An SA agent stands by his desk. Dordell dials his phone.)
(Cut to Vertag's office. His phone rings, he picks it up. Glances out the window where a few Humvee's run back and forth.)
Vertag: Coastal City Mortuary, where your loved ones go in style. How may I direct your call?
Dordell: (voice) Vertag! What's going on, buddy?
Vertag: Dordell! Did you know someone was coming over to try to kill me today? (he sits down. The camera pans down to show that the desk is covered with weapons. As the conversation continues, it pans to the side to show Millious and Lessala putting bullets in magazines and chambers.)
Dordell: (voice) I was told an arrest might be in the offing. But they were going to take steps to avoid angering the humans.
Vertag: Disskar was going to shoot me where the humans can see, to send a message to those humans. A Special Assignment message.
(Cut to Dordell's office)
Dordell: Shoot? Hang on a second. (turns to SA5) Your boss pulled a gun on him? In front of his Earthlings?
SA5: I had no foreknowledge of Agent Disskar's plans.
Dordell: So that's a yes. (turns away from SA5) Okay. Any chance you're going to turn yourself in?
Vertag: (voice) Don't think so.
Dordell: Okay. Well. I guess that's it. (hangs up the phone) Good luck getting him out of there.
SA5: I require all your men to-
Dordell: Hey, Disskar had the rank to order me to support him. He insisted he and his men could handle this without me.
SA5: Obviously, the situation has changed.
Dordell: Yes. Vertag knows you're coming. No way I'm driving up to that party. (pulls a folder out of his desk, opens it) I will station my men at all the ways out of town. We might get lucky. Who knows, maybe you'll wound him before he gets away.
SA5: You cannot refuse this order! I'll place you on report with the Directorate.
Dordell: Well, send that letter before you rush the Exchange. (reads outloud from the paper in the folder) Let's see. Four men at the airport, two at each highway....(Fade out as the SA storms out of his office)
