“What do you mean?” Julian asked, watching Garak put the cleaned phaser back together.
“I've taken the liberty of removing the power cells from the other phasers in the house, and locking them up. To protect you from yourself, Pet. I'm going to let you go and have some food, and I'm going to take a walk to ponder our course of action.”
“Shouldn't I be part of that?” Julian asked, wiggling a little in his anxiousness to be free.
“You have proven yourself to be rather brash. We're going to have to do something about that character flaw.”
“Garak, I can help you, if you let me.”
“You may be on the furniture while you wait for me.” Garak said, reaching back and releasing Julian. He trailed his hands down the silky arms.
“Garak, please.”
Julian moved toward Garak. He reached his hand toward his shoulder.
Garak dodged the hand and slipped away. He activated a security forcefield at the door to the bedroom.
“It will deactivate once I am out in the garden. I suggest behaving yourself. Maybe you should even give some thought to the reasons you have to trust me.”
Garak moved fluidly down the stairs, going into the sitting room and replicating a tall glass of kanar. He wandered out into the garden, activating the main security net preventing Julian from leaving the house and anyone else from entering it. There was a small public garden across the lane that he could utilize for his reflections. The slight chill to the night air would sharpen his mind for a little while, and he could plan their next moves.
Julian was definitely a vital kotra piece that he could not allow to be captured, but neither could he avoid using it anymore. Bold strategy and decisive action were imperative if he was to win the game.
Garak had been investigating the shady dealings of Procal Dukat for two months without as much success at penetrating his inner circle as he needed. He wandered deeper into the garden to find the flowers he had planted.
Julian might be the answer to getting closer to the family. No reason that the child's greediness could not prove beneficial. Julian could be used as her watch-keeper during the day. He would not be doing anything that required too much real information. He would need to decide what Julian did and did not need to know. The key was making sure that Julian understood how important his obedience would be. Julian was stubborn. No reason to pass up an easy in to the family, but parting with Julian was impo...
He shook a little, rubbing his arms. The chilled air was getting to him. Best to get back to the house. He turned and saw that he had wandered farther than he intended during his planning.
*~-~-~*~-~-~*
Julian wandered around the house. He went into the kitchen and replicated a cup of red leaf tea and a sem'hal stew to which he added a small amount of yamok sauce from the jar on the counter. He carried the food to the main sitting room and crawled into the window-seat to watch for his devious Cardassian companion.
“Reasons I have to trust Garak? Like being made his pet...” Julian said, trying to adjust the stupid collar.
Julian went to the drawers built into the wall after he finished his stew and began opening drawers. Maybe there would be information here. Maybe there would be something to help him understand Garak, though he doubted it. Garak was way too slick for that.
He found twenty padds and placed them on the table. He also found another controller for his collar which he left alone, a few fine Tholian silk scarves, and something that looked like orchid bulbs. He left the drawers he removed things from open, so he would remember where to put them back. He turned to the table to inspect the padds, and spotted the bag Garak had thrown.
Julian walked over calmly, and bumped the bag to the floor, causing its contents to spill.
“Damn.” He walked over to the window and looked out at the front walkway. Nothing.
Julian picked the bag up so the last of the items were shaken onto the thick dark blue rug.
He carded through them. Another controller for his collar, the dermal regenerator, a laser scalpel, a dagger with a similar design to an Earth sai, a blank data padd, a hypospray, a tricorder, and some tools Julian did not recognize. He scanned the contents of the hypospray and found a mild sleep aide. What did Garak need that for? He repacked the items and put the bag back on the sofa, and sitting on the floor to look through the padds.
He shifted on the floor as he found several works by Elosha of Prim and a strange encryption on another padd. He typed a few keys. It should not be too difficult to break. He had seen Garak crack a code similar to this one before.
He flung it aside a moment later with a loud groan.
Julian climbed up and sat on the sofa. What did Garak mean? Stupid Cardassian riddles. He stood up and began to pace and gesticulate as he spoke aloud.
“Garak clearly thinks he has done me a great many favors. He thinks I am foolish enough to trust him when he has told me often enough, in my past at least, that I am smarter not to trust him. He lies all the time. Tain claimed he had a 'gift' for obfuscating.”
Julian paced, trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together. He sighed and grabbed the blank padd from Garak's bag and began to type out his thoughts on it.
Maybe seeing it typed out would help in this infernal game.
Three hours later, he was on his back, holding the padd above his head.
“What Garak has done for me...
“One: he sent the other agents out of the room after I said his name. One of those agents, Entek, is responsible for the kidnapping of Colonel Kira in the future, so it is reasonable to suppose that he is quite dangerous. Garak likely prevented me from being tortured or killed by him.
“Two: He claims to have saved me from an interrogation by Central Command, which likely would have ended in my execution after a comforting Cardassian trial.
“Three: He gave me a chance to prove I was from the future. I told him things I should not know, about his implant and the assassination of Proconsul Merrok. He responded by refusing to let me go or to even allow me out of his immediate custody, until now.
“Four: He gave me a bunch of rules to abide by, some of which I have reinterpreted at my own risk. The purpose of the rules is still somewhat unclear. Though, when Tain was around, it seemed clear enough. They spoke of me euphemistically as a pet. So Tain might think I am a comfort man of sorts for Garak. That would not be the first example of this kind of treatment to be used by Cardassians.
“Five: Despite his seeming physical interest in my body, he says he is not going to force anything. Though, he easily could with no repercussions. Even the Guls fear Garak, or so he has said. He has certainly proved his cleverness and ability to be fearsome time and again to me.
“Six: he has talked about providing more clothes for me. Why? He has insinuated often that nudity is my choice and he is not bothered by it. He did not want Korinas touching him or his possessions. In the seven years we'd known each other, I have only once been to his quarters. And that was when he was sick. He only invited me, when he was drunk.
“What is he hiding now? What am I supposed to deduce, Garak?”
Julian grabbed a thermal blanket from the back of the couch and drew it around himself. He rolled onto his stomach and pressed his face into the cushions. He pounded his fist against it.
Garak was protecting him. It could not be denied that he had been saved at least once, and was likely being thoroughly protected by the Cardassian. But was Garak also protecting himself? That would be a more reasonable agenda. But if Garak was really so concerned about his own safety...why not kill him? Was the mystery really that enthralling? Was he that attractive if sex actually did figure in? Should he be flattered?
“I am in the past, just before the Cardassian withdrawal from Bajor, and likely just before Garak's exile. But why am I here? The only reasonable conclusion of how is being exposed to the Orb of Time. And right now, that Orb is on Cardassia. Maybe I have to get to it and use it to get back. It was how we got back after the incident with Kirk and the tribbles. But it is locked up tighter than biomemetic gel right now. Of course, Garak is a man of many talents.”
Julian plunged his hands into his hair.
“This is perfect...” the voice carried up the walkway. “I could not have planned it better...”
Julian dropped the padd on the table and looked out the window as the voice faded.
Garak stumbled up the walkway laughing deeply and loudly. He rubbed his arms, and hissed at the cold. He paused, lifting his empty glass to his mouth.
“Doctor, come out. You have a patient.” Garak laughed some more.
