Chapter 13
The Long Impatient Wait
April 13th 2006 3:25pmO’Brian Manor
Living room
James stormed in from the other room with Paige at his side and immediately saw the blood on the CSI trio.
“Nick?” James questioned as if he were seeing things.
Nick froze at the sound of the man’s voice. Now he remembered Emily and James as if it were yesterday. “James, long time no see. I hear you’re in the San Antonio Police Department?” Nick asked stumbling over his words.
James chuckled. “That’s so like you Nick. Yeah I am on the force, going on ten years now, but look…holy shit are you bleeding? What happened to you?” He asked worriedly.
Warrick easily caught what was going on and was at Nick’s side in an instant before anything personal was said. “That’s Emily’s blood. Leo just orbed her, Greg and the twins to the hospital.”
James’ eyes widened with tears. “You mean that Leo couldn’t heal her? What the hell happened to her? She was fine when she left, a little mad but other than that she was fine for a pregnant woman?” He rambled on as he started to hyperventilate.
Paige grabbed his hand and turned him to her. “Listen, Leo won’t let her die. Emily will be fine, she’s a strong person and strong willed so let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.”
“Nick turned his head. He didn’t want to see the exchange between the two. Man is she so barking up the wrong tree. That woman is in for a BIG surprise! Nick snickered at that, Go ahead and play the hero woman but he is so not going to fall for it!
James let go of Paige’s hand and stepped around her, his jaw visibly clenched with his hands balled into fists. “I want to know what happened to my sister. If it was Matthew I swear that I will vanquish him to the hell where he belongs!” spitting the last word through his teeth.
Nick tried to hide his smug smile with his bloody hand. See, I know him. You won’t get anywhere with James, trying to play the hero and making a pass at him at the same time. Honey, he doesn’t swing that way. Nick turned away so no one would see his evil smile. This isn’t the time or place to get jealous Nicholas Stokes! Get back to the topic at hand! You’re oldest friend could be dying at this very moment and your worried about a silly girl! Shaking his head, he knew that his conscious was right and that he needed to get his head back in the game, he turned back around to face everyone in the living room and the topic at hand.
Since no one answered right away, Catherine decided to give Emily’s brother as much information that she could and then ask some questions herself. “We were about to leave when your sister got a call from a guy named Matthew. I don’t know much about what the conversation entailed but it sounded like he was wanting to get his powers back. After she hang up on him she got onto her motorcycle and was heading out to the blood bar that she said we were heading to when she started having a premonition. Apparently Matthew went into her mind’s eye and attacked her that way. It looked like he was going to try to cut her baby out of her because he cut open her abdomen and it appeared on her body in real life as well.” Catherine took a deep breath, exhaled, then continued on, “Kristina and Greg astral projected into Emily’s mind and while Greg kicked ass and sliced a piece of flesh off of Matthew, Kristina worked on healing Emily. We thought that she was healed all the way because she acted fine once the ordeal was over but that doesn’t seem to be the case now. The deep cut to her abdomen was worse than we thought and did damage to either the baby and the placenta or just the placenta itself.” Pinching the bridge of her nose, Catherine could still hear Emily’s screams ringing in her ears. “Emily bled out a lot and I am so sorry to have to tell you this but her baby might not make it…” Catherine finally confessed sadly.
“May I ask who Matthew is? Grissom asked curiously. “Or should I asked what is he?”
James walked up to the couch and sat down slowly while running a hand over his face. “Matthew is a demon and my sister’s ex-husband. Emily said he was on our side and a good demon, but once evil is always evil I say. Emily didn’t care for my opinion and married him anyways after two years of them knowing each other. Nine months later Elizabeth was born. One day when Elizabeth was two years old, she disappeared from her room when Elizabeth and the twins were playing hide and go seek. Emily and Matthew were talking a walk around the backyard that they had back in New York at the time. When they couldn’t find her Emily went into shock and Matthew played the distraught father well. After forty-eight hours Emily called in a favor from one of her friends that happened to work with missing people in New York that worked in the Federal Bureau of Investigations. We all knew that Matthew was in on the kidnapping but it could never be proven. Their marriage fell apart after missing persons gave up looking for Elizabeth, and when their relationship turned violent Emily immediately packed everything that she owned and picked her children up early one day, moving them back to the manor where Emily and I grew up before being kidnapped ourselves. Elizabeth has been missing for the last five years and even though we don’t talk about her we are still trying to find a way to find her and bring her safely back home to Emily.” James takes a deep breath before slowly letting it out his face contorts into sudden shock and terror. “Where is Emily? If Matthew can track Emily he will kill her for sure this time!!” James shouted as he stood up quickly.
“I can call Greg to see where Leo took her. Kristina is supposed to be making…what did she call it again?” Catherine asked turning to Warrick.
“A vanquishing potion.” Warrick answered.
“Kristina! Kristina get down here NOW!” James screamed but his voice broke on the last word, the only sign of how worried and scared he was for Emily. His phone started to ring seconds later, finding that it was Kristina. Concerned, he quickly answered the phone call. “Kristina why aren’t you here?!” he nearly screamed into the cell phone.
‘“Emily left me here with at least thirty or so demons to babysit. What do you want me to do?”
“I want you to be here. Our sister is in the hospital and she needs us, and I don’t know which hospital she’s at. I was hoping you could sense where she is?” James covered his face with his left hand to cover up the fact that he was starting to cry.
There was a moment of silence then Kristina said, “She’s a University hospital. Wait, Leo wasn’t able to heal her even though the Elders gave him his Whitelighter powers back…how come he wasn’t able to heal her James?” Her own tears were starting to fall now. “I’ll be there as soon as I can. I’ll have to do something about the situation that Emily left me in. There are a few calls I can make, and talk to Angel and see if he can help us with this mess.” After saying their goodbyes they hung up the phone and Kristina placed another call to someone named Angel.
James placed his cell phone back into his back pocket then covered his face with his hands and broke down.
After James hung up his call to Kristina, Catherine immediately called Greg. “Where are you?” Catherine asked quietly.
James wiped his face with his hands while answering her question. “They’re at University hospital.”
Catherine nodded when Greg said the same thing and walked away to be able to hear the younger CSI better. “How is she Greg?”
Greg looked from the twins to Leo and back down the hall before answering. “She is still in surgery. All I know right now is that Emily had a miscarriage and is now in surgery to see if there was any other damage from the attack earlier. Now all we can do is wait for any sign of a doctor coming out of the OR.” He whispered into the phone so that the twins couldn’t hear what he was saying. “Listen, she lost the baby and if we hadn’t gotten here when we did we could have lost her as well, and since she lost a lot of blood they are having to do a blood transfusion as well. They are asking to keep her here overnight for observation although with how stubborn we have seen her act that might not go over to well with Emily. The thing is Catherine, we haven’t even talked about the war yet and we have no idea what we are about to get ourselves into. Are you getting a reading from those ‘Charmed Ones’? Are they coming along for the ride or do they know something that they haven’t said yet? Do they even know what’s going on and about the war as well?” Greg spouted off questions to Catherine left and right, so much so that she was having trouble keeping up.
She took a look around the room until she spotted the other empath. “Phoebe, what do you know about the war that is coming?”
“I had a premonition yesterday morning that I was in New York City, standing in the middle of the road except no one was driving on it. I looked at the CNN report that was be cast on a building about a block or so away from here they station the show TRL. They were showing pictures of buildings crashing and they were announcing all the innocent people including law enforcements, people from the FBI and ADA’s had been killed. Hundreds upon hundreds of people were dying before my eyes and I could do nothing to stop it. As I looked up in to the sky I saw a plane fly overhead and drop a nuclear bomb as they were announcing the end of the world.” Phoebe explained as tears stared to roll down her face once more.
Catherine nodded her head to Phoebe and turned back to the conversation on the phone. “Did you hear that Greg?”
“Yeah, so that explains why the police are at the manor.”
Nodding even though Greg couldn’t see it she then thought about the twins. “How are the twins holding up Greg?”
“As good as can be expected…”
“Okay well tell them that I am bringing their uncle to the hospital. He wants to be there for the twins and Emily when she gets out of surgery.”
“Okay, I will see you when… wait here comes one of the surgeons now.” Standing up quickly, Greg told Catherine to hold on while he talked to the doctor.
“Are you the husband or family member of Emily O’Brian?”
Greg knew how the HYPA law worked so in order to get more information he confirmed that he was Emily’s husband. “How is she?”
“She’s good and finally stable. Emily’s child didn’t make it and there was internal bleeding but we were able to stop it.”
Oh thank you God. She’s okay. I just wonder how I am supposed to tell her that she lost the baby. Well as long as she is alive she will be able to get through this. She’s strong. Greg sighed in relief
“Luckily, the source of the problem was that the placenta had ruptured and detached from the uterus and since there is no problem with the uterus itself she still able to have children when she’s ready. Also, once we were able to stop the internal bleeding we had to start a blood transfusion. She’s lucky to be alive, if you had waited even five for minutes to bring her in, she would have died as well.” Shaking his head with a sigh the doctor finally asked, “Emily is in the recovery room if you would like to see her now?”
“Yes please.” Greg choked out.
“Can we all see her?” Ariel asked.
“Just the three of you, since you’re family. Please follow me…”
Greg put his cell phone back to his ear and took a deep breath. “She’s stable Catherine so I will see you when you get here.” And with that he turned off his cell phone and gently took the twins hands in his own before following the surgeon down the hall.
