Sweet as Sugar Chapter Fourteen

A/N Betas are wondermous.
J Thanks to everyone for the feedback and for
putting up with me being so slow with updates!
There’s a bit of naughty language in this chapter and some frank sexual
talk but no overt nudity and dangly bits.
“That,”
Jack said imperiously, “was uncalled for.”
“Thank
you,” the Doctor put in over his companion’s sulking. “We appreciate the lift.”
The
blank-faced trio of guards, clad in simple red tunics and loose trousers, did
not respond. They returned to their
float pallet, a silver device with a handrail meant to help the occupants
balance while it was in use, and disappeared silently down the aisle from which
they had come. The hushed motor of the
pallet was the only sound in the cavernous storeroom as the Doctor and Jack
assessed their situation, looking around slowly as they both turned full circles. “Ah,” Jack sighed. “I think they bruised my arm!”
“Stop
better bruise your arm than crack your skull,” the Doctor said gruffly, his
eyes picking out a familiar blue box amidst the jumble of debris that seemed to
make up the content of the storeroom.
“We’re just lucky we weren’t executed on the spot.”
“I don’t
know what you said to them,” Jack mused, following the Doctor towards the
TARDIS, parked, as it were, between a tangle of brassy metal and what appeared
to be the trunk of a redwood. “But I’m
just glad we’re out of that crawlspace and back to the old girl.”
The Doctor stopped, one hand on the door of the TARDIS, the other
clenched into a clammy fist at his side.
“We are not leaving her,” he said in a low, tight voice. “I will not abandon her here for the sake of
your comfort!”
Jack drew
back in uncertainty. “Doc, calm down…
What’re you on about?” At the Doctor’s
thunderous glare, the conman took a large step backwards and held up his hands
in a ‘hey, I’m harmless’ gesture. “Is
this about Rose? Look, don’t be stupid,
okay? I don’t want to leave her here any
more than you do. I…”
“You don’t
have a clue, Jack!” the Doctor spat, his face transformed into something
entirely alien to the human, something red and angry and pained to the point of
being monstrous. “You think people are
disposable, something to be used and discarded! Rose isn’t like that! She’s not
one of your…your…”
Jack barely
managed to keep his voice conversational. Rage boiled inside him like molten
lead as he closed the distance between himself and the Time Lord. “You ever talk to me like that again, I’ll
rip both of your hearts out by way of your asshole, got it, Doctor? Don’t you ever,” he punctuated the word with
a hard jab to the Doctor’s chest, “say I don’t care about people.
Especially Rose. Especially her.” He backed off a step and raked his fingers
through his already messy hair. “You
have no idea what she means to me and if I have to shed my own blood to get her
back, I’ll do it. If she has so much as
a tiny scratch from those bastards, I’ll go to the ends of the Universe to
avenge her. Is that understood,
Doctor?” He noticed, as if through a
haze, that the Doctor was staring at him in a mixture of affront and surprise. Venting a harsh breath, Jack shrugged. “I get a bit emotional when I’ve been
shanghaied and forced to wear a mesh thong,” he said after a moment of stunned
silence. “It’s the chaffing.”
The Doctor
gave Jack a measured, assessing gaze and nodded once. “The TARDIS should be able to show me where
Rose is, unless…” his voice was swallowed by the depths of the control room as
he turned his back on Jack and hurried to the confines of the ship.
“Unless
what?”
“Just…
unless.”
Jack
followed him in, pushing the door to behind him. He wavered for a moment, uncertain as to whether
he should go put on pants immediately or help the Doctor in some way. “Doctor…”
“For the
love of all that’s decent, go get some clothes on,” the Time Lord
interrupted. “I can’t save the world if
you’re hanging out like that.” He did not
look up at Jack, busying himself instead with making sure the TARDIS had not
been harmed in any way and was still fully functional.
“I am quite
the distraction,” Jack allowed, sounding quite distracted himself. Without another word to the Doctor, he headed
for the hallway and the long walk to his personal space within the TARDIS
walls. What he had said about Rose had
been true. He did care about her more
than any other human he could name, aside from himself. She was good, pure in a way that he had not
been for a long time. Time and space
were still new to her, despite her time with the Doctor, and seeing the
Universe through her eyes was like being born new. He admitted to himself—hell, he thought, he’d
admitted it to the Doctor and Rose herself—that he thought she was more than a
bit pretty but, even as young as he was, he knew that he was too old for her in
ways that could not be quantified.
Reaching his room, he paused and pressed his hand against the wall to
steady himself against the sudden onslaught of dizziness that seemed to come
from nowhere, sweeping over his body and threatening to send him
sprawling. “Ooooh… not good,” he
breathed, his eyes sliding closed against the sight of the honeycombed walls of
the TARDIS melting and spinning before him.
“Shiny…”
The Doctor
tapped in one last code on the clicking keyboard and smiled as the tiny screen
before him blazed to life. So far, so
good, he thought. The TARDIS was in
working order, as much as she had been when he left her, and it was currently
searching for Rose’s biorhythms among the population of the Dome. His mood swing was going up and he felt,
somewhat grudgingly, that he should apologize to Jack, but his stomach was in a
burning, acidic knot as he thought of Rose being pulled away from him, the
feeling of her ankle sliding through his fingers still vivid as he heard her
scream in his ears. It had been so
ragged, so scared and pained that he instantly supplied a thousand mental
scenarios, each more gruesome than the one preceding, as to what could be
happening to her even as he waited for the TARDIS to pinpoint her
location. Another screen, on the other
side of the console, beeped impatiently at him, telling him that some other
requested information was ready. He
scurried around to that side, the legs of his current form still taking some
getting used to as they seemed to want to tangle now and again, and peered
anxiously at the blue screen. “Oh…my.” Characters
in an ancient tongue were scrolling before him, reams of information, tangles
of fact and legend, spewed forth from the TARDIS’s seemingly infinite (right
now anyway) databases. “Bugger,” he
growled, the characters shifting to yet another language. “Bugger all!”
A/N Rose is back in the belly of the beast… the Lady is
determined!
