File 14: Truth stranger than fiction
Crown Palace Hotel
Mulder’s room
9:33 am
Mulder rolled over to look at the clock. Groaning, he rolled back over. The night had come and gone without Riley showing up. He’d been certain that she was interested in him, certain that she would take him up on his invitation. Deciding that it would do him no good to lie around in bed, he got up and dressed. He picked up his cell phone and called the studio she worked at to see if she would be up for continuing the conversation. The operator on the other end of the phone coolly informed him the Ms. Hunter had taken ill and wouldn’t be in for a few days and, no, she wouldn’t be able to give him her personal phone number or address, but if he wanted to send her a card or flowers, he could send them to the studio and they would be forwarded to her. He thanked her politely and went next door to Scully’s room.
She answered the door after a couple knocks. Her face grew concerned when she saw him. “Mulder, are you ok? You look terrible.”
“I didn’t sleep well last night,” he admitted.
“Any reason in particular?”
He shook his head. “I can’t stop thinking about this case. All those women we talked to the other day didn’t know anything. I’m wondering if we’re really on the right track.”
“Well, something happened last night that you should b aware of,” she said, letting him.
He sat down on the edge of the bed. “What?”
“Very little.”
“Come again?”
“I got a phone call from Detective Lockely while you were still sleeping. She told me that they found a body on the roof of a building near the station. Eye witnesses say that they heard voices coming from up there just before it was found. One of them says that prior to finding the body, he saw a suspicious man carrying an unconscious person on his back. He followed to see what was going on. He saw the man load the person into the back seat of his car and drive off.”
“That seems interesting.”
“It gets better. The body had a gunshot wound to the back of the head.”
“Can’t be the Hunter then.”
“There was a lot of blood, most of it human, but some of it belonged to the demon. Presumably, anyways, as it was the same color. The most interesting thing was the description of the man given by the witness.” Scully paused. “Ready?”
“Stop teasing me Scully.”
“It was dark, but the man he described fit the description of one Alex Krycek.”
Mulder looked up at her. “Krycek?”
“Based on the evidence, I think we can assume that Krycek got his hands on the Hunter.”
“Great, just great,” Mulder groaned. “Here we are stuck trying to find out her identity and he already knows. I shudder to think what he’s going to do with her.”
“Take her back to his employers, I would assume.”
Mulder stood up, a look of fierce determination on his face. “We have to find him and get her away from him, Scully.”
“You don’t have to tell me that. Can we do it after breakfast though? I’m starving.”
“Are you sure we can wait that long?”
She held up a sheet of paper. “I did some poking around. I have the address he’s staying at. Detective Lockely posted a guard on it to track his movements. He hasn’t gone anywhere and if he does, we’ll know it and where he’s going.”
“You’ve thought of everything.”
“I’m tired of looking at those grotesque bodies. I just want to get this over with and go back home.”
“So do I, Scully. So do I.”
Wayside Motel
10:15 am
Krycek answered a knock on his door only to be greeted by Mulder bursting into his room with a gun aimed at his head. Scully was right behind him, her weapon out in front of her, but not aimed at him. Should the need arise, though, he had no doubt that it would come up to aim at some point on his body.
“Where is she, Krycek?” Mulder demanded angrily.
“Where’s who?”
With one hand, Mulder slammed him up against the wall and put that arm under Krycek’s chin. “You know exactly who I’m talking about. The Hunter. Where is she?”
“How does it feel to know that you were right where I was wrong, Mulder?”
Mulder studied the younger man carefully. His green eyes were devoid of the ferocity and cunning that was usually present. “What are you talking about?”
“I thought the Hunter was a man. I laughed at you behind your back for thinking he was a she, but you were right. Oh, were you ever right.”
“Where is she? I’m not going to ask you again.”
“There’s no one else here, Mulder,” Scully told him. “It’s just the three of us.”
“I don’t know where she is. Presumably, she went home. And no, I don’t know where that is.”
“Mulder, there’s something wrong with him. Just look at him. He looks terrible.” Scully put her gun away and pushed Mulder away from Krycek. She examined his face carefully. “What happened to you, Krycek? The last time we saw you, you looked a good deal better than this.”
“So concerned for my health all of a sudden, Scully? That’s not like you.”
“You look like a dead man walking.”
“I didn’t sleep well. Only a couple hours.”
She grabbed his arm and dragged him over to the couch, making him sit down. “Now, why don’t you tell us about this Hunter? That’s all we want.”
“Really? Did you discuss that with Mulder?”
“If you don’t start talking, I’ll let him kill you. If you want to live, I suggest you start.”
“I have nothing left to live for.”
Now Mulder was puzzled. “You’re acting weird, Krycek.”
His eyes flared angrily. “You don’t understand anything, so who are you to make any judgments. Even when we were working together, you were ignorant of a lot of things. You don’t know the first thing about me.”
“We just want you to tell us about the Hunter,” Scully said slowly.
“I heard you the first time. You might be able to deal with it, but I can tell you right now that Mulder isn’t.”
“Why don’t you let me decide for myself?”
A slow grin spread across Krycek’s face. “You really want to know? I just want to know one thing first, Mulder?”
“Yeah? What’s that?”
“How was Riley the last time you saw her?”
“Riley?”
“Don’t play stupid with me, Mulder. Actress, tall, thin, blond hair, saw her at Caritas the first time?”
“She was good. Why?”
“Nothing happened between you? You didn’t try anything with her?”
Scully turned to look at her partner. “What’s he talking about?”
“You mean you didn’t tell her? Shame on you. You see, it seems that Mulder here let his hormones get the better of him. Lucky for her, she got a phone call that interrupted things.”
“How do you know about that?” Mulder hissed
“You mean he’s telling the truth?” Scully asked, shocked, but more at the implications brought by Krycek’s words than by the fact that he was telling the truth.
“I got a little carried away when I was questioning her, yes, but I fail to see what this has to do with anything.”
“I saw Riley recently. She mentioned the incident. That’s how I know. You recall that I found her attractive as well.”
“I also clearly recall the hole she put in your jacket,” Scully pointed out.
“The Hunter isn’t what you think she is. It’s Riley. Riley is the Hunter.”
“That’s not possible!”
Krycek’s grin became a knowing smile. “Ironic isn’t it? All this time she was right in front of our faces but we were too blind to see it. Think about it. What’s her last name?”
“Hunter,” Mulder replied and then it dawned on him. “Oh.”
“Yeah, you see? I didn’t even realize who she was until after I got her back here and tied her up. The plan had been to get some sleep while she was tied up and then take her back to the Syndicate. Only the revelation of her identity complicated things. I’m not going into details, but she fooled me, tricked me into a moment of weakness and escaped after tying me up.”
“A woman got the better of you. How does that make you feel?”
“It’s not the first time she’s done it either,” Krycek said glumly. “There. You have what you wanted. Leave now. Leave me alone. I don’t really want to deal with people right now.”
“If I find out that you’re lying-“ Mulder started.
“You think I’m making this up? It’s too bizarre to be fictional and you know it.”
“He’s right, Mulder,” Scully admitted. “Let’s go. We have what we came for. We can find her with what he’s given us.”
Mulder reluctantly agreed and they left the sullen Krycek to sit by himself.
On the way back to their hotel, Scully insisted that they stop by the Hyperion. Mulder grumbled about it, telling her that he wanted to get to Riley and talk to her as soon as possible, but she was adamant about it, so they stopped. The Angel Investigations team was lounging about in the foyer when Mulder and Scully walked in. They all sat up, startled.
“Agent Scully, Agent Mulder,” Wesley greeted them with a friendly smile. “What can we do for you today?”
“Nothing, thank you. I just wanted to let you know that we’ve identified the Hunter and we’re on our way to talk to her.”
Fred jumped up. “You won’t hurt her, will you?”
“Fred?” Angel asked her. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” she replied quickly. “Nothing at all.”
“You know something, don’t you?” Gunn asked her.
Fred hung her head. “Yeah, I do. I didn’t say anything before because she asked me not to.”
“Do you know the Hunter?” Scully asked her.
“Yes. I’ve know her for a long time. I never really believed in the stuff she talked about until after I came back from Pylea. Every thing made sense then.”
“Can you tell us her name? We have one, but the source isn’t very reputable. We just want to check to be sure.”
“Riley. Riley Hunter.”
“The actress?” Cordelia asked, her voice squeaking a little.
“That’s her.”
“That’s the name we were given,” Mulder said, nodding. “Why didn’t you say anything before? You could have saved us a lot of trouble.”
Fred squirmed uncomfortably. “I promised her that I wouldn’t tell anyone. She prefers to be left alone. What she does has no bearing on what most people know or do. For the most part, people are unaware of the things she hunts and therefore unaware of the existence of these hunters. Ask anyone in town if they know what she is. They’ll tell you it’s just made up if you explain. Despite this, what she does is necessary, just like what we do and what the Slayers do.”
“We won’t hurt her, Fred, I promise,” Scully told her. “We just want to talk to her.”
“About what?”
“These bodies. If these Hunters have been operating for any length of time, why are there bodies showing up all of a sudden? Why now? What’s changed?”
She relaxed a little. “Ok. I want to go with you, though. She won’t react well to strangers showing up.”
“I’m no stranger to her,” Mulder told her. “Neither is Scully. We met her at Caritas, remember?”
“That was one meeting. You aren’t friends.”
“I have talked to her since.” Mulder fidgeted.
“At any rate, if you think it’ll help, you’re more than welcome to come with us,” Scully said after giving Mulder a look.
“Would you mind terribly if I joined you?” Wesley asked. “I have little to do here and these Hunters are new to me. I’ve only dealt with Slayers. It’s good to be informed about other kinds of demon killers. Perhaps we could work something out with her, combine our efforts.”
“Good thinking, Wes,” Angel commented. “That is, if Fred thinks she’d be open to something like that.”
“We can always ask. She does have a long family history of demon hunting, so it’s possible that they know things we don’t, possibly even vice versa. But before we decide we want to do that, I think it’s only fair to warn you that she has a stake in her apartment that has your name carved into it, Angel.”
“Me? Why?”
“She showed it to me a few months ago. She said that one of her ancestors that lived around the time you got your soul back made it just in case you lost your soul.”
“Good thing she wasn’t around when I did back in Sunnydale.”
Cordelia gave him a look. “You’re saying that’s a good thing? I mean, looking back form this perspective, yeah, good thing, but back then? Buffy certainly couldn’t get rid of you. It would have been nice to have this Riley girl around.”
Angel looked hurt, but turned to Fred instead. “That’s fine with me. Should I go evil, I’ll need someone around with the guts and skill to do it.”
Fred turned to Scully. “Is this ok with you?”
“I don’t see anything wrong with it. Do you Mulder?” He shook his head. “Right. We’d best get going.”
“Let me give her a call and let her know what’s going on. It might be best if we met her at some place that isn’t her apartment just to give her a little privacy.”
Internally, Mulder cursed, but out loud he said, “That makes sense.”
Fred ran off to give her friend a call, returning a couple minutes later. She handed a piece of paper with a time and address written on it in a neat hand. “This is where she’ll meet us.”
“We have an hour to get there. I’m not all that familiar with L.A, so I’ll need the time.”
Wesley looked at it over her shoulder. “I know the place. I can get you there quickly.”
“That would be great, thank you. Mulder, do you mind sitting in the back with Fred? It’s easier to give directions from the front seat than the back.”
“Not at all.”
“Right. Let’s go then.”
St. Lydia’s Cathedral
11:30 am
The car rolled to a gentle stop outside of the old abandoned cathedral on the far side of town. No one lived anywhere nearby. The area was unearthly quiet. Wesley explained that it was due to a vampire nest that had taken up residence nearby a few years ago. They’d been wiped out by a demon cult that Angel Investigations had taken care of. Parked nearby was a black Dodge Neon. Taking that as a sign that she was there already, they got out and went in. Fred kept giving the other car a suspicious look.
“What’s wrong, Fred?” Wesley asked her.
“It’s probably nothing, but the last time I checked, Riles didn’t drive that kind of car.” She shrugged. “She’s probably doing that on purpose to throw us off.”
“Would she do something like that?” Mulder asked.
“The most likely reason I can think of is so that you F.B.I agents can’t track her by the license plate number.”
“Smart,” Scully commented, looking around.
The inside of the cathedral was in tatters. The place was falling apart. A lot of the pews had been smashed up to use for firewood. The altar at the end was broken as was what had once been a large statue of a woman. The crucifix above her had been left alone. Scully thought that was odd.
Wesley followed her gaze up. “Vampires and some demons can’t touch a cross without serious pain,” he explained. “They fear them as a result.”
“Oh,” she said, sounding crestfallen. She had hoped that there was a deeper reason to it.
Mulder joined them. “Well, I’ve looked all over the place, but I don’t see her anywhere.”
Behind him, he heard the distinct click of a gun. “You didn’t look hard enough, Mulder,” Krycek told him, stepping out of the shadows.”
