Chapter Twelve

Alfred rarely worried about Kristien but tonight he was, the news of Zafar being taken had started to take its toll on Kristien. Alfred had brought up hot water bottles for her to hold to try to relieve the aches again and various drinks to tempt Kristien to at least take some kind of liquid refreshment in. Kristien looked tired and in pain. Alfred hoped that eventually it would pass like many nights before.

Just as Kristien was scheming up a plan to castrate all the men on the estate, Alfred walked in. “Miss Kristien, Mr Coldsmith-Briggs the third wishes to speak with you.” Alfred invited.

“Tell him that String isn’t here and I certainly don’t want to talk to him.” Kristien buried her head under her pillows and the duvet in the four poster bed.

Alfred picked up a towelling robe and held it up. “Master Stringfellow has missed a radio check in.” Alfred told the mound of pillows. The pillows moved slightly as Kristien held out her hand to receive the phone. “Er, video conference I am afraid.”

A muffled moan of “for fucks sake” was to be heard from under the pillows. Alfred formed a small smile but stood with the towelling robe open. Kristien’s head appeared from the pillows first and then she rolled her legs out from the bed and allowed the soft warm duvet to fall from her naked body. She put herself in the towelling robe and just held it around her, not wanting to tie it round her.

“It’s just head and shoulders they can see?” Kristien asked not wanting anyone else to know that she was pregnant. They had hidden this from everyone.

“Yes, Miss Kristien.” Alfred confirmed.

Alfred escorted Kristien to the downstairs office. The screen on the wall had Archangel sat patiently waiting. His eyes showed a glimmer of recognition as Kristien came into the camera view. He was slightly surprised that it was only head and shoulders but as it was 2300 hours in London he expected Kristien was in bed already.

“Don’t you have clocks over there?” Kristien moaned pretending to yawn.

“We do, question is does Hawke.” Archangel replied.

“How the hell do I know if he has his rolex on.” Kristien kept her answers brief whilst she typed into another laptop to the side.

“Hawke was supposed to check in four hours ago. He hasn’t.” Archangel confirmed. “At the same time he was supposed to check in NORAD found an unscheduled helicopter flight over Saudi.”

“So why are you waking me up for this?” Kristien sighed totally pissed off with Archangels lack of information. Carsten appeared at the doorway out of sight of Archangel and nodded at Kristien.

Archangel rubbed his moustache and realised that Kristien was really pissed off. “I am sending the information over now.” Archangel uploaded the USB stick and the information appeared on Kristien’s secure laptop. “I know he took Airwolf.” Archangel replied. “We need to find Airwolf. I want you locate it for us?”

“Oh really.” Kristien pretended to be surprised. “Is that all?”

“Yes.” Archangel replied. “I can stay connected whilst you confirm its whereabouts.”

“And why would I want to do that?” Kristien replied sceptically.

“So we can send in the marines to retrieve it.” Archangel replied.

“It or String?” Kristien found a fatal flaw with Archangels plan.

“That’s what I said.” Archangel tried to correct his faux pas. “To retrieve Hawke.”

“I can’t do it from here. I will have to transfer down to the hangar.” Kristien lied. “I think you expect far too much from me like the Jericho Project you made me do for 2 years.”

“Oh no Kristien, you are fabulous, that’s why I always chose you.” Archangel replied. “Besides you make every project brilliant.” Archangel added more flattery. “At least I always put you in charge of the projects.”

“Just like the Airwolf Project.” Kristien added.

“Exactly, having you lead the Airwolf project was the best decision I ever made.” Archangel replied. “Right I will talk to you down in the hangar then.” Archangel signed off.

Kristien froze.

Carsten looked at Kristien. “What’s up?”

“I need to get hold of the Flight Dynamics Officer at NASA. We need a lot of help because who ever that is on the screen looks like Archangel and talks like Archangel, but its not Archangel.” Kristien replied.

“What?” Carsten looked at Kristien. “We know Archangel is working for the other side.”

“No this isn’t Archangel. I was never in charge of the Airwolf Project. My name never appeared on the project. I was brought in by Archangel to break all the ciphers and passwords made by Moffet.” Kristien replied looking directly at Carsten. “And the Jericho Project was a top secret FIRM assassination unit before the Committee finally made ZEBRA Squad to do the same thing.”

Carsten looked at Kristien. “He has passed all the fingerprint scans and the retinal scans so Archangel has got to be brainwashed then to work for the other side.”

“Carsten will you bloody well keep up here. That is NOT Archangel.” Kristien firmly told him. “Retina’s and hands can be grown in the labs now, cloning is happening all the time.”

“What? Cloning?” Carsten had lost Kristien a few minutes before. He was so fixed on Archangel working for the other side for months it had clouded anything Kristien was trying to say.

“I tell you what, I order you to kill this Archangel, does that help you understand?” Kristien bluntly replied.

Carsten checked his weapon and reloaded it, placing it under his shoulder holster. “Count me in.”

Kristien sat at the computer station at the Hangar. All six wall screens were connected up to Airwolf. Kristien checked everything over and looked at the various read outs. She had got changed into her Airwolf Flight Suit. Carsten stood behind her also dressed in an Airwolf Flight Suit. She was already linking up to NASA. A video conference was set up between Kristien and the Flight Dynamics Officer at NASA.

“Andrew, how are you? Busy as always?” Kristien greeted the Professor and Flight Commander.

“Kristien! Busy? Busy! When are you coming back?” Andrew cut the conversation down to the essentials. “You want to see how that new fuel system for the shuttle you invented works.”

“Of course it works!” Kristien smiled. “I have a small favour to ask.”

“The way I see it I owe you loads of favours.” Andrew added some flattery.

Carsten raised his eyebrow at the conversation spilling out in front of him. One thing Kristien certainly had lots of an engaging charm which appealed to all men. She could sit and have an easy conversation about any kind of engine which to most men was music to their ears. Although she did not know it, any man would easily want to take out the enigmatic young lady for a romantic meal and then hopefully a romantic encounter. Kristien just brushed all the men aside, nicely of course, but she would never entertain playing the field, not ever. Carsten kept looking feeling slightly jealous of the new man sharing a small piece of Kristien’s life.

“I am sending over the information now in a cipher the NASA Computers will recognise.” Kristien explained. “The computer will execute the instructions and then leave no trace.”

“You testing that MACH 7 monster again?” Andrew asked. “You know you promised me a ride.”

“I know, best you talk to NASA saying you want me to look over a couple of things then get your butt over here!” Kristien started to upload the information. “You think you can handle MACH 7 then?” Kristien cheekily replied.

“I can handle anything you design, you know that.” Andrew continued with the playful banter that was between them.

Carsten rolled his eyes, he was sure he was about to be sick at any moment with the man on the screen talking this sweetly to Kristien. He wanted so much to spill the beans about Kristien being pregnant to stop the conversation in its tracks, but then he worked out if he still fancied her being pregnant by another man then so would every other man.

Andrew looked at the computer screen his side. “Got it. You keep in touch you hear.”

Kristien smiled back. “I always do!” She was just about to sign off. “Andrew, thank you.”

The computer screen went blank and reverted back to the Airwolf insignia.

“Right lets get going, we have a lot of time to make up.” Kristien replied and she made her way over to Airwolf.

“What about Archangel?” Carsten replied.

“Oh he will be chasing something very shortly and not us.” Kristien smiled back and opened Airwolf’s starboard door and got in. Carsten sat in the Co pilots seat slightly worried that he was about to test the sickness pills he had taken again. He looked over at Kristien and her small pregnant bump, he hoped that she would not be going into labour anytime soon.

Kristien had already placed the helmet on her head and pressed TURB START ONE. Airwolf juddered as one of her powerful engines sprang to life. Kristien’s eyes darted over all of Airwolf’s instruments checking all were operating correctly. She pressed TURB START TWO and the second engine sprang to life. The rotors were soon at full speed ready to take off. Kristien pulled on the collective and cyclic and Airwolf rose elegantly out of the hangar and made her way on the trail of the Phoenix.

At one hundred and twenty thousand feet Hawke watched the video screens on the phoenix look at what was happening far below. Various oil fields were already alight with the Iraqi troops just wandering aimlessly over Kuwait. Hawke’s mind wandered back to when Kristien was taken from his cabin and they had tried to take her on the Kuwaiti plane and Carsten had rescued her from the wreckage, he looked at the imaging map and wondered if history was different that Kristien would have been in Kuwait, at least he would have know where she was instead of the five years when she was missing. He looked at the computers on the prototype aircraft and saw all the flights from all the allies listed with all the aircraft carriers. Hawke smiled silently to himself knowing that somehow Kristien had hacked into the Pentagons war office and was getting a live feed of all the information without leaving a trace.

He looked at the other screen and realised he should be somewhere else.

“Fuck.” He thought and turned the Phoenix from its high level stacking and pushed the throttle forward. The powerful engines grabbed at the thin air, pushing the aircraft forwards, forcing Hawke deep into the pilots seat. He watched the aircraft effortlessly flew at MACH 4 without any of the instruments even moving a millimetre, such was the precision of the aircraft.

Hawke started to descend knowing he was heading for a trap. What else could it be?

He was not sure of anything from the FIRM anymore.

Hawke brought in the Phoenix over one of the refuelling coordinates for Airwolf. He checked carefully what was down below. Satisfied nothing was about he used the VTOL capabilities of the Phoenix to land in the clearing. Hawke opened the cockpit and sat for a while waiting for the trap to close round him.
