(Open in the Earthling Building. Adams stands in the cupola of his Hummer, talking to a semicircle of officers)
Adams: Okay, I want the busses of civilians up first. Then the APC's. Sensitive technology, weaponry, insensitive tech and the security cordon. Oh, and hold one empty bus with security.
Perez: You're thinking we're going to have to abandon something?
Brown: If everything goes without a hitch, we'll have just enough room in the shuttle for everything.
Adams: And if there is a hitch, I don't want to have to check cargo to decide what to leave behind.
Peterson: Whatever we leave, we're going to blow in place anyway, right?
Adams: Damerae?
Perez: We'd like to, unless there's friendlies still on or among the vehicles when we lift.
Peterson: Oh.
(Doctor Roth approaches, joins the group)
Adams: How are the patients?
Roth: Disgruntled about the treatment being interrupted. Some a little traumatized about seeing that giant shot. But none of them seem to be carrying any of the Cure in their system. They should make it to orbit well.
Adams: And they'll be first on the ramp, Terry. Any other patients being transported?
Roth: Just a sentry that dropped an ammo case on his toe while they were stripping the perimeter. I immobilized his foot and gave him something for the pain until we get to Fleet medical.
Adams: Okay. I guess we're ready until the shuttle arrives.

(open in the Exchange front office. Several pieces of furniture are piled behind the front door. The giants have guns arranged behind the security door which is open. Vertag and Millious watch Lessala wire explosives behind the barricade.)
Millious: How big of a blast?
Lessala: Enough to get one or two, hamper the others.
Millious: Why not enough to vaporize them?
Lessala: I'd rather not risk any rubble going high enough for the shuttle to suck it into one of their engines.
Vertag: Yeah, they'd probably make us pay for the thing. And the buildings it crashes down on.
Lessala: Oh! I think it's time!
Vertag: For what?
(Cut to another room in a building across from the Exchange. Two SA agents enter the room cautiously. One pulls the curtain aside and looks up)
SA6: No booby traps.
SA7: They may not have known about this room. Very few of Dordell's men had access. None of Vertag's men did.
SA6: (lifts a case into view, sets it on a bare table) That mistake will be their last. (they start to assemble a really big gun)
(Cut to a duck blind across from one of the gates. Two SA crouch behind a big fern)
SA9: Tell them we're ready.
SA8: (into a radio) Team four,
(cut to the heavy weapons team. SA7 lifts a radio to his ear)
SA8 (voice): We're in position.
SA7: Acknowledged. Any booby traps?
SA8 (voice): We didn't find-
(Cut to Lessala and her remote. She pushes the button)
(Cut to the heavy weapons room)
SA8: (voice) any sort of-
SA9: (voice) Did you hear a beeping so-
(Static on radio)
SA7: (to radio) Team six? Team six? (to partner) They got team six.
SA6: But we're still here. They must not know about it. Continue setting up.
(Cut to the office. They close the security door, ready weapons, then sit and stare at each other.)
(Cut to the control deck of the Inflict. The big screen at the front of the CONN shows the Exchange compound from overhead, growing bigger rapidly as the shuttle descends.)
(The Captain of the shuttle stands close to the weapons officer's panel rather than the pilot's positions up front, though he keeps an eye on them)
Weps: Sir. Some giants are gathering across the street from the office. Looks like they're about to rush the front door.
(Cut to a closeup of the big screen. Down in one corner, four SA Agents crouch behind a car across the street from the Exchange)
(Cu to the view of the CO)
Captain: Pass that information to Agent Vertag.
(Between him and the pilots, an officer has a bulky set of headphones on. She nods and starts talking into her mic)
Comm: Adams, advise the giant that more giants are about to rush their position.
Weps: (reaching towards a control on his panel) I can fire a few missiles at them, sir.
Captain: No, Weps, do not engage any giants unless they are actively firing at us or at any humans. They haven't attacked us yet, they may have orders not to.
Weps: So, we just hover in place and hope they don't want a diplomatic incident.
Captain: Those are our orders. (Turns from the screen to his officer) Those are my orders, Weps.
Weps: Aye-aye, Captain. Don't shoot first.
Captain: (nods then turns to operations officer) Lower the ramp.
Ops: Lower the ramp, aye.
Captain: Pass the word to Adams.
Comm: Adams, we're lowering the ramp. (On the screen, the ramp starts to enter the view from the left side, extending downwards)
Weps: Weapon detected! (Cut to a closeup of the screen. A red circle blinks around a building to the side of the compound. As we watch, the building explodes)
(Cut to the hallway. Lessala slaps her forehead and pulls the remote out of her pocket, makes an adjustment)
Vertag: What?
Lessala: Forgot one. (she pushes the button)
(Cut to the Heavy weapons crew. The SAs have a large gun pointed up at the Shuttle)
SA6: Okay, don't hit them with the first round.
SA7: I know.
SA6: Just see if you can scare them off without damaging the vessel.
SA7: I know. We rehearsed this!
SA6: I'm just making sure-
(Beeping sound from somewhere in the room. Camera pans from the SAs to the window sill. Nothing there, camera continues to travel, shows the outside of the window. A big bomb on the wall there has a blinking red light.)
(Cut to the Inflict. Weps sits with his finger almost touching a red button on his console. On the screen, the red circle is suddenly filled with flame, then stops blinking. Then the circle shrinks and finally goes out)
Unidentified voice from offscreen: Damn...
Captain: Never mind.
Weps: (lowering hand) Never mind, aye. Damn, aye.
(The screen view zooms in on the compound, outlying buildings just barely visible. The ramp touches ground. Vehicles swarm to and up it. The tanks spread out as a security boundary while the other vehicles rise in the order Adams directed. Tank turrets point in the directions of the two gates and the giants' building)
Comm: Commex Onload, Captain. Loadmaster asks if we're to save room for the giants?
Captain: No one briefed me on that. (glances at the screen. Giant SAs run to the door. Shots are fired as the front door explodes. Two SAs are thrown across the sidewalk. The others rush into the smoke) Does the Master Chief think we'll even have that much room?
Comm: Loadmaster, from the Captain, will we even have that much room? (Pause) Aye. He says no, Captain.
Weps: Knowing the Master Chief, he said it more colorfully.
Captain: Shuddup. Well, that answers his question, doesn't it? (turns to OPS officer) What's the status of the giants?
OPS: Gunshots in the front building but nothing to see through the door or windows.
Captain: (to Weps) Keep an eye on that door. Don't want any of the giants in the compound before we're loaded.
Weps: Got it, sir. (captain opens his mouth) And, I won't fire until I'm sure it isn't a friendly giant. (Fade as the Captain nods and pats Weps shoulder)
(Fade in outside the Exchange front door. Two cars screech to a stop at the curb. Agents get out, including SA5 from Dordell's office. They see the blasted door, but there are no dead bodies on the sidewalk. They look up to see the tail of the Shuttle overhead. A few weapons on the hull track the giants)
SA5: Inside! Get a human if you can. Any that you can!
(Agents rush inside. Camera follows SA5, looking over his shoulder. Just inside Vertag's office, an SA agent kneels with his back to the front door (and our view). On the ground in front of him is another SA, face down in a pool of blood)
Kneeling SA: (pointing towards the open security door) They're in there! They've got Vertag cornered on the stairs!
(most of the agents rush through the security door. SA5 steps to the down agent. Camera follows.)
SA5: Who did they get?
(Wounded SA rolls over enough to show that it's Lessala in a dark suit and a short-hair wig. She smiles)
Lessala: We got you!
(Camera pulls back just enough to show that Millious is the other SA. She has a gun pointed at SA5)
(Cut to the hallway outside the Tank room. Agents rush through, looking into the Tank room, the kitchen, opening the cleaning closet. Just as the lead reaches the stairway to see there's no one there, a gunshot is heard from behind them. They all spin around.)
(Cut to the kitchen where we see Vertag step out of the fridge, holding a machine gun.)
SA10: What was that gunshot?
(Vertag rounds the door and empties the magazine into the hallway)
(Cut to the front office. Millious stands up from searching SA5 with a set of car keys)
Millious: I believe I found my ride.
Lessala: If you want to go now, that's fine.
Millious: (shrugs) I'll go when you go.
Lessala: We're holding the fort until the humans are all loaded.
Vertag: (steps into view) I'd look and see how it's going, but I'm afraid they're a bit jumpy right now.
Lessala: I'm a bit jumpy right now!
Millious: Aren't you guys in radio contact?
Vertag: Oh. Yeah.
Lessala: Forgot about...(hand to her ear) Colonel? How are you guys doing?
(Cut to Adams in his cupola. His Hummer is just inside the circle of tanks. A last few flatbeds are pulled up to the ramp. Trucks are stopped on the ramp waiting for room to advance)
Adams: A lifting elevator malfunctioned and cut an ammo carrier in half. We're waiting for that to be cleared. How about you guys?
(Cut to the office. Lessala looks over at Vertag and shrugs)
Vertag: Can't be too many more. There just aren't very many Special Assignment men on the continent.
Adams: (voice) What about Dordell's men?
Vertag: Dordell called Disskar the boss. That was to let me know I shot the only guy that can order him to support them. At least without an hour or more delay to get the authority.
Lessala: First Nation bureaucracy. Gotta love it.
Millious: Why would Dordell do that?
Vertag: He hates Special Assignment almost as much as you do.
Millious: That's a lot of hate.
Adams: (voice) Okay, okay. What about local law enforcement?
Lessala: (laughs) The Directorate's people asking 2nd Nation cops to work with them?
Millious: (laughs) They'd never trust them enough.
Lessala: They'd never even think of it.
Millious: Tell your humans the politics is all wrong.
Vertag: Okay, Colonel. Our professional assessment is that you should hurry every chance you get? But safely.
Adams: (voice) Thank you, Vertag, Lessala....Millious. I will pass that word.
Lessala: He says thank you.
Millious: For what? Insulting Special Assignment? SID? First Nation? No charge.
Vertag: Gracious of you.
Millious: Aw, did the big bad rebel hurt the SID agent's feelings?
Lessala: He's not SID any more.
Vertag: I sure hope not. If I am, my next performance evaluation is going to SUCK.
(There is an explosion outside. Heads are raised. Vertag peers through the wreckage of the front door. Beyond the SA cars on the sidewalk, Vertag's car burns)
Vertag: Lessala? Did you rig a bomb to my car?
Lessala: Months ago.
Vertag: I've been driving a bomb for months?
Lessala: Yeah, but it was only rigged to go off if someone else tried to rig a bomb to your ignition.
Millious: Sneaky.
Vertag: You might have told me.
Lessala: Like you don't keep secrets from me?
Vertag: I always tell you about BOMBS!
Millious: Fascinating as this lover's spat is, does this mean someone's out there rigging cars to explode?
Vertag: Yes.
Lessala: Well, not any more.
Vertag: True. (moment of thought) It might have been the last goon. Not enough manpower to rush the building, but enough to hamper our getaway.
Millious: (pulls out the car keys she got off the SA officer) I wonder if this car is rigged?
Vertag: No way of knowing. (Millious tosses the keys aside)
Millious: So we're all walking?
Lessala: We have a car staged nearby.
Vertag: But no one knows you're in here. You get a block away, you're probably in the clear.
Millious: Hmmmm.
(cut to the shuttle control room. Trucks are still motionless on the ramp. Captain is standing with OPs)
Captain: Okay, if the busses are empty, get the power lifters to dump them back to the ground. Offload the flatbed cargos, pile them in the bay, dump the trucks themselves on the busses.
Ops: We'll need the tanks to move enough to clear the space.
Captain: They can move or they can be left behind. Even jarheads can do that math.
Comm: Sir! The elevator's been cleared and recertified for use.
Captain: Certified? How did they-?
Comm: Master Chief MacAuslan says it's good to go, sir.
Captain: Good enough. Continue loading.
Weps: Sir! There's a group of giants moving on one of the gates. (Screen over Weps' station shows an infra-red view through the side gate. Three figures approach. Two have weapons in hand, one attaches a bomb to the gate)
Captain: Will that explosive hit the tanks?
Weps: No way of knowing, sir. But if it shatters the gate, shrapnel is going to spread across the whole compound. Splinters the size of telephone poles could hit the tanks.
Ops: And the ramp.
Comm: And our hull.
Weps: If we lift a bit, I can get a shot down on top of them.
Captain: (to Comm) Tell Adams that giants are about to blow the gate. (Comm speaks softly into her mic) (to Weps) I'm not lifting while anyone's still down there. Can we launch a drone or something?
Comm: Sir! Adams says the giants are advised and are taking action.
(Cut to the corner of the wall between the front door and the side gate. Vertag and Millious watch the area, guarding Lessala with a sniper rifle. She takes out the three giants with four shots.)
Vertag: (gaze sweeping the area, not looking in the direction Lessala has a weapon pointed) Did you miss?
Lessala: No.
Vertag: They said three. You fired four times. That means one of your shots missed.
Lessala: It means one was really tall. I had time to shoot him again on the way down. Just to make sure.
Millious: Can we get back under cover and discuss marksmanship behind reinforced walls? (they all run back to the front door)
(Cut to the control room. Perez and Janet step into the space and approach the Captain)
Captain: Miss Crane, welcome aboard.
Janet: Thanks.
Captain: Any problems?
Janet: Only getting someone to remove the handcuff holding me to the bus.
Captain: Excuse me?
Perez: Nothing to worry about, sir.
Captain: Alright, Major. What can I do for you?
Perez: I'm here in case we need to coordinate abandoning vehicles.
Captain: Not likely, not unless the giants really press us.
Janet: How is that going?
Perez: She means, how are Vertag and Lessala?
Janet: Shut up.
Perez: Janet, no one is upset that you care about them. Ask the questions you want answers to, it'll go faster.
Captain: They appear to be fine. They've taken out more than a dozen of the Special Assignment Agents.
Janet: (sigh with relief) Great. And how are we going to coordinate their retreat to the ramp?
Captain: Um...(looks to Perez)
Perez: Janet, we're not. We can't take them with us. There's just no room.
Janet: We can't abandon them!
Perez: Vertag not planning to climb aboard. He told you he'd signal us. He told you goodbye, Janet.
Janet: But if we leave them here...
Perez: I'm sure they're prepared.
Janet: Okay. Can we at least take a moment to find out what he meant by 'watch for my signal?'
Perez: Right after he said that our communications were compromised? He's not going to say anything over the radio.
Janet: But-
Perez: Janet, if it's that important, we can't risk it. But he won't let you down.
Janet: Okay, but...
Comm: Captain? Adams reports the last tanks are on the ramp. (Everyone glances to the screen. Adams Hummer is just ahead of four tanks)
Captain: Raise the ramp. Secure all vehicles. Check the airspace. Prepare for immediate departure.
Janet: We have to tell-
Perez: (Tugging Janet away from the center of the command center) They'll notice. They just can't miss us leaving.
(Cut to an outside view of the compound. The ramp finishes closing with tanks still on it. The engine noise ramps up and the shuttle rises on a steep angle.)
(Cut to the inside of the giant's building. Lessala looks up at the sound. Vertag and Millious stare at each other)
Vertag:
Lessala: They're going! The humans are going!
Millious: So, we can go?
Vertag: Yeah. Just leap out there to see if any snipers are left.
Millious: You first.
Lessala: Guys?
Millious: It's okay, Lessala. He doesn't completely trust me.
Vertag: She doesn't completely trust me.
Lessala: So, neither of you wants to be the first to leave?
Millious: He doesn't dare turn his back on me.
Vertag: And she still doesn't think someone from First Nation or SID will honor an agreement.
Lessala: (shakes her head) Zealots. (Her hands stab out and two needles fly to strike the other two giants)
Millious: Ow!
Vertag: What the hell?
Lessala: It's something I got from the humans to let us get out of here. (she draws out another needle and stabs herself.)
Millious: What is it? Invisibility potion? (Fade out as Lessala shakes her head)
(Fade in to a burned-out room across from the Exchange. Dordell walks in with one of his minions, kicking rubble aside as they approach the window)
Minion: Are we going to engage, sir?
Dordell: Are you suicidal? He took on Special Assignment! And won. We're just going to try to see if we can tell when he leaves and which direction he goes.
Minion: Yes, sir. What about the others?
Dordell: What others?
Minion: Oh. Yes, sir.
(Camera leaves that room, moves through the window into the street. Drops down to a sewer grate in the sidewalk. Goes down to that, blacks out)
(Fade in down in the drain tunnel. The light coming through a grate shows a pipe with two Hummers inside. They point in different directions. The three giants wear Tank coveralls and stand between the Hummers)
Lessala: Okay, you get THAT one. This pipe leads to the general neighborhood of the Chief's office. I'm sure you have an emergency stash there somewhere?
Millious: Maybe. Nothing there I can use now. (she tugs on the shoulder of an ill-fitting coverall)
Lessala: Well, with the dose I gave you, you've got four hours to get there and get out of the pipes before the shrink wears off. You'll be back to normal after that.
Millious: Four hours.
Vertag: We get the other one? It leads to where we stashed our getaway car?
Lessala: Close. Close enough for us and our four-hour window.
Millious: You're sure about the four hours?
Vertag:
Lessala: No. It may be three. Or two. I'd get a move-on if I were you.
Millious: I.... Thanks. (she gets in the vehicle and drives off)
Vertag: Was this planned months ago?
Lessala: You think you're the only one with long-lived game plans?
Millious:
Vertag: No, but... (shakes his head, opens the door to let her drive) You know where we're going.
Lessala: Thanks! (Mounts happily and starts the engine. He rushes around to the other side.)
(Cut to the Excelsior. An observation room has a large window that shows a planet from orbital height. Janet watches the planet turn under the spaceship. Styles enters the observation room, looks at Janet for a second, then steps up beside her. Janet smiles sadly then goes back to watching the planet)
Janet: Now I know how everyone must have felt when you and I got washed away.
Styles: Doesn't seem fair, does it?
Janet: No. After all they've done for us, they're on the run from two governments. Maybe more.
Styles: (thoughtful pause) The night after the rat attack, the remains of my squad was on the Wall. They saw Lessala and Vertag burning some sort of sacrifice, a superstition to help us get home. They pointed a parabolic mike out at them and heard what they said about our chances.
Janet: Slim and None? And even the nun says you haven't got a prayer?
Styles: Lessala was in tears. They're so small, they're so tiny, she said.
Janet: What did Vertag say?
Styles: Coastal City against two human women. The city hasn't got a chance. (Janet laughs in spite of herself) Right now, the forces of the Directorate, including police, security, Special Investigations and Special Assignment, of First and Second Nation, and whatever's left of two rebel organizations that Lessala worked with, are arrayed against two very competent people.
Janet: Is Gunny Knowolski giving odds?
Styles: He's trying. But, Janet? No one in the garrison. NO ONE is betting against Vertag and Lessala.
Janet: (quiet voice) I wouldn't.
Styles: Damn right. Now come on. Let's get some rest.
Janet: I can't sleep right now.
Styles: Well, you have to know, when Vertag does give that signal, it won't be because things are about to get boring. (tugs her arm.) Come on. Bedtime.
