Chapter 14
“I need to get you both somewhere safe,” Cas said the second he popped into the backseat of the Impala, face looking grave. Jerking the wheel, startled, Dean swore softly then looked into the rear view mirror. The look on the angel's face was enough to tell him that this was serious. Turning slightly so he could look at Cas, Sam asked, “What's going on?” He already didn't like this but wanted information. Looking between the two brothers, Cas explained, “We have angels on our side helping the other.” Lowering his eyes and locking them on the floorboard of the Impala, he sighed, “We had Alistair in our grasp and were trying to get information out of him, but one of the angels helped him to escape.” Lifting his gaze, eyes taking on a hard look, he said, “It was Uriel. He's dead now, but I managed to get some information out of him before he died. Both sides now realize that something is wrong. Alistair gave up the fact that they don't think Sam has any demon blood left in him anymore. That means both factions are going to be looking for you.” Giving a firm nod, Dean asked, “Where? You have any ideas? We can protect ourselves pretty well, obviously. Sammy says he knows those sigil things you guys use. That'll help.” “I have somewhere I can take you. Expecting this, I've set up a place,” Cas explained then, within what seemed like the blink of an eye, the Impala was cruising down a rutted old road that was little more than a worn dirt path with two ruts for the tires. “Up head there is a small cabin. I've prepared it.” Though slightly disjointed at the abrupt change of scenery, Dean nodded, slowing down his baby and cruising along, keeping an eye out. “Where are we anyway? Or do I want to ask that?” “New Mexico, just west of Taos, outside the main town. It'll hide you well. That hum throws off both sides of this fight so I thought it best to put you here. I've found a small, abandoned cabin that I warded well. No one, be they either side or human, will be able to find you,” Cas explained. Liking that, Dean nodded. “Good! And at least it's somewhere fairly warm. How close are we to town in case we need supplies?” “Not far,” Cas said. “I've procured another vehicle for you to use to do that. It's warded with sigils on the underside so that it can't be detected. I've also made it to where the demonic faction can't trace it. There is a garage for the Impala on the grounds. You need to park it in there and leave it alone until I can get time to put protections on it as well. They won't be visible, marked on the frame of the car, but it needs to be done. With how I set up the garage, if either side of this fight has dumped something on it to track you, it'll negate it.” Stopping, he glanced between the two then said, “Tonight you'll have to go into town and get supplies. I would suggest you stock up the best you can so you don't have to go too much. We're far enough away from where you were that I don't think anyone will find you, but it's better to be safe.” “Understood,” Sam told him. “We'll do what we can and get everything we think we'll need. Any idea how long we're going to be out here? Or no clue there?” Looking down, brow furrowed, thinking, Cas told him, distracted, “A couple weeks I would think. It shouldn't be longer than that I would imagine. It'll give me time to deal with what I have to and get us all out of this mess. By the time you are back in the game, both of you will be out of the reach of both sides and there will be nothing they can do to draw you back in. However, that doesn't mean it's going to be pleasant to deal with either. Both factions are going to be angry at having their plans derailed and will probably try to come after you. They'll be scrambling to figure something else out, though, and that will give us an advantage.” Liking what he was hearing, Dean nodded. “Good. Scrambling is good. That means we have an edge. I do have to add here that we need to give Bobby a heads up on this. If we aren't in contact, he's going to get worried.” “I already thought about that,” Cas told him with a nod. “I stopped to see him to let him know some of what is going on. Not much, so that no one can get it out of him, but enough to tell him you're safe, though won't be around. He accepted it and will protect himself the best he can.” “That works,” Dean told him, cruising up to the small, rundown cabin. Seeing the open garage door, he eased his baby into it then shut her off. “Alright, let's get everything inside and see what needs to be done.”
Hauling the last of the junk out of the trunk into the house, Dean dropped it onto the floor by the door, looking around, pleased. This was great! From the outside, it looked plenty dilapidated, like no one had been in it for about fifty years, but inside it was better than any hotel room they had stayed in, including the ones in Vegas. The only thing he could come up with to describe it was something like the Trickster had set up so long ago. There was electricity, running water, a huge TV, all of it. If they had to hide out, it didn't hurt to do it in the lap of luxury. Walking fully into the cabin, he saw Sam in the kitchen area with Cas, making a list of what they needed for supplies. Cas had provided some, but since he didn't attend to some needs like they did, he wasn't going to remember to get everything they required. Stepping closer, he said, “How are we going to do this one? Wait until dark and both of us go?” “No,” Cas told him with a shake of his head. “I'm going to send Sam on his own. He has added protection you don't from being detected. He can manage to get everything quickly and get back with neither side the wiser. You don't have that yet, something we'll take care of while Sam is gone.” “Alright, that's good,” Dean said. Tossing the list to Dean, Sam asked, “Is there anything in particular you want? I'm going to try to get everything I can on this trip so we don't have to make too many of them. I know we'll run out of some things and have to go back eventually.” Looking at what was there, Dean took the pen Sam had been using and added a few items before passing it back. “That should do it for now. You know the kind of things to get so use your judgment.” “Will do,” Sam nodded, pocketing the list. “Let me go take care of this and you start putting things up. When I get back, we'll see what else needs to be done.” Seeing Dean nod, he then glanced towards Cas, “You still going to be here when I get back or do you need to go?” “I'll be here,” Cas told him firmly. “How long I can remain I don't know, but I'm going to try to stay the night.” Stepping closer, he pulled Sam into a heated kiss before stepping back. Grinning, Sam nodded then grabbed the keys to the car he would be using and left. Chuckling as he watched his brother go, Dean shook his head. He was about to say something to the angel when he felt Cas' hand on his chest and then a burning pain. Hissing, eyes widening, he asked when Cas finished, “Dude? What was that?” “I burnt the sigils on your ribs. That will protect you the way Sam is. As it hurts, I assumed doing it this way was for the best,” Cas explained. Rubbing his chest, Dean nodded, sighing. “Yeah, that didn't feel real good. If it works, I can deal with it.” Looking at the older Winchester intently, Cas wasn't sure how to push with something he wanted. Eying the angel warily, Dean wasn't sure what to say to him. This was, really, the first time that the two had been alone since that one night. He knew what was coming and that Cas was involved, he just wasn't sure how to handle it, especially with how dominate the angel was with Sammy. That he wasn't sure how to deal with yet. Nor was he one that allowed that kind of thing. Taking a step closer, Cas put a hand on the back of Dean's head and pulled him into a kiss. It wasn't the passionate, frenzied ones he shared with Sam, but something softer. Breaking off quickly, he kept the hand on the back of Dean's head then said, trying to soften his tone, “We need to press on, Dean. It'll help. Sam has told me that you're apprehensive and don't 'bottom' like he does. I'll respect that.” Nodding, not sure what to say, Dean just looked at him. However, he was relieved that Sammy had said something to Cas about it. He was thinking about going there, but didn't want to play rough the first time he did. In fact, he would rather Sammy do that when he did want to go there. “We'll work around it,” Cas told him confidently with a nod. “Sam seems to know how. I'll let him work with the situation and will follow his lead.” Giving an amused snort, still trying to wrap his head around the fact that his brother knew about such things, let alone how to pull off a threesome with three men, Dean said, “Yeah, he can explain it to both of us. Women I can do. Men? Rather lost there.” “Sam knows what he is doing so we don't have to worry,” Cas told him confidently. Rubbing Dean's head softly, he asked, “Are you ready for this or not? Do you need more time? Though the matter is pressing, we can put it off.” Looking at the angel, Dean thought it over. Sam he wanted, badly, obviously since they had already gone there. Cas was different though. He—well, he didn't know. After a couple minutes of thinking it over, he nodded slowly, “I can. Just don't expect me to be as comfortable with how you are as Sam is. I'm not ready for that part.” “You're having enough issues dealing with the evolved relationship with Sam, I get this,” Cas told him bluntly. Snorting, Dean said, “That's an understatement!” “You like it though,” Cas told said. “It's obvious you do and you're far happier.” “I'll admit to that,” Dean sighed, rubbing his eyes. “This is better than what was going on, Dean.” Cas soothed as gently as he was able. “Others may see it as wrong, but I don't. You two have a bond like no other I've seen, one that goes beyond just being brothers. This seems natural to me, though others wouldn't view it like that.” “Maybe,” Dean sighed, shaking his head. There was still some residual guilt over what they were doing, probably from what was ingrained by their dad when it came to him protecting Sam. After all, this wasn't about protecting Sam, but doing something he craved in a way he hadn't many things in his life. Leaning forward and kissing him again, Cas then whispered, “We'll work it out and it'll get easier.” Looking at the angel, Dean sighed. “We will,” he finally said, tone firmer. Changing topics, not wanting to stay on that one, he asked, “They're going to find out you helped us when we show back up, aren't they?” “They will.” Cas told him with a firm nod. “I don't see any way to hide it from them.” “What's that going to mean for you then? I mean, they're going to be pissed, no doubt there!” “I'm not certain,” Cas told him, looking down, brow furrowed. “I imagine I'll be cut off from Heaven over it. I'll still have my powers and such, but won't be able to do some things I can now. I'll also be in danger of them coming after to me to exact retribution, but that's not something I'm concerned with. I'm more than capable of taking care of myself. However, I'm more concerned about what they may try with you and Sam. Both sides are going to be unhappy with this turn of events. And you both will be a far easier target than I am when it comes to exacting revenge. That's my worry.” Shaking his head, Dean sighed, “Ain't this a big stinking pile of shit? We get out of one mess and will probably be dropped into another.” “We can handle it,” Cas imparted firmly, looking intent. “They won't succeed and it won't be worse than what we are dealing with right now, so I'm not concerned. You shouldn't be either. I'll be with you all the time, so you won't have to handle it on your own. Between the three of us, we'll be able to take on anything they try and will come out on top.” Snorting then a grin forming, Dean nodded. “There is that! We do make a good team, that's for damned sure. We've come out on top so far against everything they've thrown at us, we can do it again.” “Exactly,” Cas said pointedly. “We'll manage. And there is nothing they can do to break the bond that will be there. Nor will they be able to get one of us alone and try something without the other two knowing. Divide and conquer won't work here. They will learn that quickly.” “Good! One less advantage they'll have,” Dean told him, liking that part. “What's this going to mean for the mess we're in? You said it'll stop it for now. How is that going to work?” “The final battle is coming. All the players are in place, at least in some form, and the steps have been taken to kick it off. This is just going to delay it, nothing more. When it'll come, I don't know. The anti-Christ will now be the one to start the mess, not Sam or you. In the time it takes him to gain enough power to do that, many things can happen. I don't know there, Dean. It may be a couple decades or longer before it happens. Much can change over that time. Lilith, Alistair and the others will continue to walk the earth; there is nothing that can be done to change that. You do have to remember, though, that the demons are just that; demons. They don't blindly follow orders. Each of them have their own agenda. What we've seen so far, other than Lilith, were once human. There are other demons in Hell that were never human. I'm also aware that there are plenty among those ranks that don't want Lucifer back for their own reasons. Unlike Heaven, rebellion is a real possibility with that faction. It may aid us in a way we don't realize.” “Yeah, they didn't end up there for no reason,” Dean snorted, grinning. “I didn't think of that either. It'll help, that's for damned sure!” “It's nothing to be overly concerned about. Whatever either side throws at us we’ll handle together and will come out fine in the end. It'll just cause turmoil, nothing more. Eventually, they'll find another focus and will leave us alone. We can deal with that.” “We can,” Dean agreed, nodding once more. Stopping, he looked at the angel. Putting a hand on the back of Cas' head, he leaned forward and kissed him. It was the first time he had made such a move with Cas, one he was slightly unsure of, but found he liked it. Leaning into the kiss, Cas, too, was pleased. It was most assuredly pleasant. Normally, even with Sam, he was the one that initiated everything. To be on the receiving end was most enjoyable as well. That was something he was going to have to remember for future reference.
Taos Hum
An ongoing low frequency noise, audible only to some, is thought to originate somewhere near the town of Taos, NM, and is consequently sometimes known as the Taos Hum. Those who have heard the Hum usually hear it west of Taos near Tres Orejas. It has been described as sounding like the distant rumble of a diesel engine idling. The Taos Hum was featured on the TV show Unsolved Mysteries, and it was also briefly mentioned in an episode of The X-Files.
