When Melanie woke up the next morning, Daryl was already gone. Figuring that he wouldn’t return for a few hours, she decided she might as well go out and find something to do. She quickly got dressed in one of Daryl’s sleeveless tshirts and a pair of her shorts and slipped into her gym shoes.
She stepped out of the tent and into the bright morning sun. It was a beautiful day.
She made her way across the field and found Carol outside washing laundry in a bin out underneath the trees in the shade.
“Hey Carol. Need a hand?”Melanie said.
“Oh, thanks hun. I appreciate it, but it seems like I got everything handled here.”
She paused for a moment.
“Oh, Mel. Daryl was by here a little bit ago. He said he was lookin for you.”
“I don’t know why,” she said, with her hands on her hips. “I just came from the tent and he was nowhere to be seen. He could have just come there and got me.”
“I don’t know either, but he sounded like he was in a bad mood this morning.”
“When isn’t he in a bad mood?” Melanie said with a laugh.
Inside her head, Melanie had visions of last night. Her, teasing him. Him, frustrated and horny. Then visions of their love making flashed through her mind. He amazed her. He could be so tough and gruff with everyone else, yet, so tender and loving to her. The man was a mystery some times.
Melanie walked a long the path that led to Hershel’s pond. That was where she found Daryl, sitting by himself along the edge.
“Hey you.” She said with a smile
“Hey.” was all he said.
“Is something wrong? Is someone hurt?” concern etched on her face. She sank down next to him and looked at him quizzically.
“Who was Ken?” said Daryl.
“Ken? What are you talking about?”
From behind his back Daryl pulled out a diary. It was tattered and torn and the front cover was almost completely ripped off.
Melanie turned white as a ghost.
“Where did you get that?!”
“This morning, went lookin for more arrows. Bumped your bag and this fell out. I picked it up to put it back and this page was face up when I did.”
“You shouldn’t have read that. None of that matters now.. It was in the past.”
Daryl looked at Melanie, not convinced.
“Ya gonna tell me what happened or are we gonna keep playing this round and round game?”
“Daryl…..It really doesn matter. None of that,” she pointed to the page Daryl had open, “matters now. I love you and you love me, so lets just leave the past alone.”
“Why didn’t ya tell me ya were raped, Mel?”
Melanie laid down on the grass and began to sob uncontrollably. Dammit. Why did he have to find out? She had moved on. Gotten over it. She finally had found a man she could let in. Now this big cloud is gonna loom over their relationship and he is always going to look at her differently from here on out. Things can never be the same again.
“Mel……It’s alright…..Im here and I aint goin anywhere….Just want ya to let me in…..Ya can trust me….”
“ I don’t want to talk about it.” Melanie cried.
“Remember how we always promised we would be honest with each other? I am asking ya ta be honest with me now.”
“I cant.”
“My dad was a mean sum a bitch. He used to beat ma brother Merle and me with switches from the tree out front of our house. When he drank, he was even meaner. He got locked up all da time. Left me an my brother to fend for ourselves, but ma brother got in trouble all the time, so most of the time it was me on my own.”
Melanie sat up…Daryl was opening up to her.
“What about your mom?” she asked. “Didn’t she take care of you?”
“Nah….My momma died when we was just little ones. Just me, my brother, my dad, and whatever bar bitch he would bring home. They would eat our food and order us around. Ma brother was smart. He joined the military and left. But as soon as he did, ma dad started beatin on me worse than before. That’s what the scars on ma back are from.”
“Holy hell. What kind of man does that to a child?” Melanie said.
“Will Dixon.” Daryl said.
“I was 16,”Melanie began. “My cousin and I were going to the movies to see the new Jude Law movie. My parents had told us to come home straight after the movie, but my cousin said she was hungry and my parents wouldn’t mind. She said she would take the fall for me if they were mad when we got back.”
Daryl scooted closer to Melanie and put his hand on her knee, to reassure her and show her that he was really listening and that he would be there for her.
“Anyway, we went to this diner to eat and there were four guys sitting at a table across the diner from us. The one kept winking at my cousin, and she flirted right back. I told her to knock it off, that they were older than us and we had no business talking to them. But she wouldn’t give it up. She liked the attention. The waitress brought our food and as we were eating two of the guys left. The other two kept watching us and eventually they came over and sat in our booth.”
“Did ya know em?”
“No,” she said. “We didn’t. They were from the local college. They were freshman I think. They made small talk with us until the time came for us to pay and then head home. My cousin was flirting up a storm and I kept trying to tear her away from them so we could leave, but she wouldn’t listen. They offered for us to take a walk with them, and my cousin Anna jumped at the chance. I didn’t want to go, but she promised to stay by my side the whole time. I was nervous. I had zero experience with boys and these guys seemed like they knew exactly what to do and say to get what they wanted.”
“Why didn’t you just stay there and call ya mom?”
“I was young Daryl, and she was my ride. My cousin. She and I were close. I had no reason not to trust her. But she left me with the guy named Ken and then took off up the street with the other guy. Ken seemed like an ok guy at first. We talked about school and basketball. But we took a wrong turn and ended up in an alley. I didn’t know how to get back on the main road. And that’s when it happened. He slammed me back against a wall and ripped my jeans down my legs. He forced himself inside me and held his hands over my mouth so I couldn’t scream. I lost consciousness and woke up naked from the waist down and lying in a dirty alley with the sun shining on me. I made it to the main road and a nice older woman helped me inside a drugstore and called my parents. They came, the police came, evidence was collected. I was mortified. I felt like it was all my fault. But it wasn’t. He took advantage of me and I had nothing to be ashamed of.”
“Ya right. Ya did nothing wrong. That guy was a predator praying on a young naïve girl.”
“A few days later, after things had calmed down, I went to my parents to see if I could talk to my cousin. To tell her I didn’t blame her either. She was 18 and had a different set of rules than I did. My parents sat me down and said the police had caught Ken, the guy who hurt me, and they had also caught his buddy Roger, and they were both being charged. I couldn’t figure out why they were charging the other guy. He hadn’t done anything. My parents said that after he and my cousin had ran off on me, he took her to an abandoned apartment on Isle Rd and killed her. His fingerprints were all over the knife that was used to stab her 82 times.”
“Shit……” was all he could say.
“So, anyway, after the court proceedings and everything else, I went back to high school and graduated a few years later. I got straight A’s and ended up going away to school on a full ride scholarship. I never dated anyone. I had a hard time letting any guy get close to me.”
“I never dated no one either. A girl for a good time here and there, but no relationships. Never wanted one…….til I met you.”
“You were the first man I have ever wanted. I had male friends, but most of them were gay. I never wanted to let a guy get close to me, but I was drawn to you right away. I feel safe with you. Please don’t let this change who and what we are. That’s why I didn’t want to tell you. I was afraid you would look at me different and some how it would change “US”.”
“Aint got nothin to worry bout girl. I love ya. Have always loved ya. Will always love ya. No matter what. Aint nothing could change that. Come here.”
He reached over and pulled Melanie into his lap. He nuzzled her hair and ran a hand down her back, sending shivers down her spine.
“Daryl…….can we go back to the tent now?” Melanie asked. She leaned in and gave Daryl a soft kiss.
“Yea….Let’s go…..Mel, thank you for being honest with me…It means a lot to me that you trusted me enough to tell me.”
“Your welcome. Honesty, always k?” She said, and put her hand is his and they started walking back toward the farm.
Daryl looked over at her and replied “Honesty, always.”
