Natalie sat watching TV with Liam. “Tell me about when you were born,” she said to him.
Liam sighed, not really wanting to think much about it. “This all came from my brother, mind you, because I really don’t remember. They weren’t expecting me for another week or so, but I woke my mother up in the middle of the night kicking the crap out of her.”
Natalie chuckled. “Yeah, those middle of the night kidney jabs can be a real pain.”
“Yeah, but then I went completely still all of a sudden. After my sister that really scared her so she sent my dad to go fetch the midwife.”
“You were excited, then you got ready for action.”
“I guess because very shortly after my dad left the first contraction hit her. She had my brother sit with her and hold her hand until Dad came back with the midwife. She was terrified it was my sister all over again. She was in labor a little over seven hours before I came out very much alive. The midwife put me in her arms, and I think I told you, she refused to let go, not even so the midwife could clean me up a little. I just nuzzled right into her chest. She held me until she died. Then the midwife washed me off. My dad didn’t want to hold me, but Evan did, so the midwife handed me over and I peed on him.”
Natalie laughed. “That’s pretty funny. Good timing there. Obviously Evan didn’t hold it against you. You know, when you told me that story about the pillow she made for you I had no clue what she must have been feeling while you were inside her. Now I have an inkling, and I gotta tell you, it’s pretty awesome. This baby caught me out of blue, and I love every minute of it, even the kidney jabs. Crazy as it sounds the puking for about two months was worth it. And your mother prayed every night since your sister was born to be able to feel something alive inside her again. She was happy and she loved you. I sympathize with her being afraid when you went still. This one has calmed down a little lately and that worried me. The doctor said that’s normal though. He’s getting bigger and putting on weight so moving around isn’t as easy as it used to be. When they did the ultrasound yesterday his heart was good and strong, so...”
“That’s good,” Liam nodded. “When I was born they didn’t have all the technology they do now, so my mother didn’t have a clue how I was until I came out.” He shook his head. “To spend seven hours not only in that much pain, so full of fear...”
Natalie put a hand on his shoulder. “But at the end she got to see for herself you were very much alive and probably the most beautiful thing she’d ever laid eyes on. Her prayer was answered, even if it was the end of her life.”
Sam came inside and smiled at them. “How are my favorite people?” He knelt in front of Natalie and put his hands on her belly. “Hello in there. Oh, I can’t wait for you to come out. This whole waiting thing is torture.”
“Patience sweetie,” Natalie smiled at him. “He’s gotta bake just a little while longer.”
Dean came downstairs and suddenly Castiel and Uriel were standing in the room. Dean’s eyes narrowed. “What do you two want?”
“You might want to mind your tone, Winchester,” Uriel growled. “Anyway, we aren’t here for you. We are in need of our best interrogator.”
Liam stood, his eyes flashing red for a second. “Why?”
Castiel stepped toward him. “Something has been killing our brothers.”
Astiratu shrugged. “Fewer angels. No love lost here. Y’all hate me, remember? Why the flying fuck would I want to do anything for you?”
Castiel tilted his head. “I don’t hate you. You know that.”
“You’re about the only one, but tell me what you need done and maybe I’ll think about it.”
“Because you injured him so badly three weeks ago we were able to capture Alastair. We think he knows who has been killing our brothers and sisters, but thus far we can’t get anything out of him. Astiratu, interrogation is an art form and you are DaVinci. You literally wrote the book on the subject.”
“What about my co author?”
“Extremely busy with his own job.”
“You wrote a book on torture with someone?” Dean looked to Astiratu.
“Yes,” Astiratu nodded. “Another high up and I wrote a book called ‘one thousand and thirteen fun things to do to people who piss you off’. But, Castiel, what if I don’t want to do it? That stuff comes from a place of pain and rage. These humans,” he motioned around the room, “are trying to heal that for me. Their efforts are a band aid on a cannon ball hole, but still, no one has ever done anything like that for me before.”
Uriel got in his face. “We are not asking.”
There was a fluttering of wings and suddenly Astiratu was standing in an underground bunker. “Here you go, DaVinci,” Uriel pushed a cart of items toward him.
Astiratu sighed and looked down at the cart. “This is seriously all you’re giving me to work with?” he scoffed. “Why am I the only one with imagination?”
He pushed the cart into the room with a sigh. A minute later the screaming began. After twenty two minutes Astiratu emerged covered in blood. “That was a total waste of my fucking time. He didn’t know a damn thing.”
“You’re absolutely sure?” Castiel looked a little stunned.
“One minute you’re calling me DaVinci, and now you’re questioning me? That waste of essence was begging for mommy before I finished him off. Now, if you don’t mind, I’d like to go home, and I am not cleaning up that mess in there.”
Suddenly Astiratu was back home. “You okay?” Dean asked. “None of that blood is yours?”
Astiratu sighed. “I know what Alastair did to you, but I don’t know if this will make you feel better or scare you.”
He put two fingers on Dean’s forehead and let the images of Alastair’s last moments replay. “Oh, my god!” Dean cringed away. “Not even in hell did I...”
Astiratu shrugged. “I told you, demons seriously lack imagination. Anyway, Alastair is dead, and that was some really good stress relief. I’m gonna go clean up before my human self wakes up and wonders why he’s covered in blood that isn’t his.”
Dean sank onto the couch shaking his head. “While it felt good to see Alastair break like that, the things Astiratu did to him made what I saw in hell look like a pillow fight. How is that monster inside that sweet person? Is there like some kind of Russian nesting doll situation going on here?”
“I don’t know,” Sam shook his head. “He said he didn’t want to do it, but the angels took him anyway.”
A few minutes later Liam was coming down the stairs. “I’m con-” he stopped mid word and his body tumbled down the stairs.
Astiratu stood back in the underground bunker, but this time Castiel was blooded with Uriel standing over him. “What the hell now?”
Castiel pointed to Uriel. “Sanguinemes,” the word was spoken.
Astiratu’s eyes turned purple and he advanced on Uriel. “Oh, please, no...” Uriel’s eyes widened.
A few minutes later Astiratu’s eyes were red again and he stood over what was left of Uriel. He turned to Castiel. “One, really don’t appreciate that much. Two, I’m not cleaning that mess up either.”
They had Liam’s body laid out on the couch when Castiel made his appearance. “I really don’t want to see you right now,” Dean growled. “First you force him into interrogating Alastair. I got to see a clip, and I really didn’t want to see the man I love turn into such a monster, even if it was a demon he was doing those things to. Then you pick when he’s on a staircase to summon him back. He could have broken his neck! Fortunately for you his body is banged up, but alive.”
“Sorry,” Castiel frowned. “I didn’t know his body wasn’t in a safe place. I was in desperate need of a rabid pit bull.”
“An attack dog,” Dean shook his head. “Is that really all he is to you?”
Castiel shrugged. “He was created with an attack command. What do you suggest I do with him? It was Uriel. He had joined forces with the demons to free Lucifer and he was going to kill me next.”
Liam groaned and his eyes fluttered open. Castiel was gone. “Weird day,” Liam shook his head. “I was sitting here with Natalie, then I was in the bathroom next to a pile of really bloody clothes, and now I’m here again and my head hurts.”
Dean gently stroked his hair. “These are weird times, Babe. Don’t worry about. What do you say we just go upstairs and cuddle until dinner is ready?”
Liam went to bed a little confused, but content. He woke up in the morning and Dean was not there. Thinking his mate was downstairs eating or something he went about his morning routine. When he went down Natalie was walking around frantic. “What’s wrong?” he asked her.
“I can’t find Sam. He was gone when I woke up, and I’ve looked everywhere. His bag is still on the floor, the car is still in the driveway...”
“Yeah, Dean is gone too. I haven’t seen him anywhere.” Liam paused and swallowed hard. “I really do not like this. Something is wrong.” His eyes flashed red. “Oh, Castiel!” he screamed at the top of his lungs.
Castiel appeared in front of him. “I am sorry, Astiratu, I can’t tell you what is going on.”
“Can’t, or won’t?” Astiratu’s eyes narrowed and his hand was shaking a little as he picked up a knife. “Because if it’s the latter you know I can loosen your tongue.”
Castiel raised a hand with a pleading gesture. “I’m sorry, friend, but my superior has stepped in. He has told me nothing.”
“Zachariah?” Astiratu started breathing hard.
“Please, just calm down,” Castiel urged. “I know it’s not in your nature, but getting angry will solve nothing. Whatever this is, just let it play out.”
“I really do not like having my life fucked with!” Astiratu screamed at the top of his lungs.
“I know,” Castiel nodded. “It’s just… After Uriel… I don’t know. Believe me, I am as concerned as you are.”
“Oh, I highly doubt that. You’re a fucktard angel who only cares about orders. I’m the one with emotion that’s being toyed with right now!”
Castiel sighed. “Believe it or not, I have been questioning things as of late. And you are not being toyed with. Sam and Dean are being toyed with. You are just one of the unfortunate loved ones caught in the crossfire.”
“Yeah, because angels don’t give a damn about anyone but themselves.”
“Not true. Like I said, I don’t know details, but they are being put through some kind of test. Please calm down and take care of this pregnant woman. That child in there is destined to save a lot of lives himself one day.”
Castiel disappeared leaving Astiratu feeling helpless and enraged. Three weeks passed and nothing. One morning Liam got up and started packing. “Where are you going?” Natalie asked as he headed for the door. “Don’t tell me you’re leaving me too.”
“I have had enough of this shit. I am getting them back. I’ll be at Bobby’s if you need me.”
He drove almost non stop to Bobby’s. “You look like shit, boy,” Bobby commented when he opened the door.
“Yeah, well, how would you look and feel if the person you loved most had been taken away by a self entitled dickhead? Where’s the stuff you took from Jason’s?”
“Spare room back there. I’m still sorting through trying to figure out what half of it is.”
Liam marched back there and started digging through things. He soon found what he was after, an obsidian scrying bowl. He scribbled down a list of ingredients and handed it to Bobby. “You got all this stuff?”
“Yeah, but what are you going to do with it?”
“Get answers.”
Bobby gathered everything and Liam ground it up together in a bowl. Then he sliced his palm open, dripping the blood into the herbs while chanting. “And what can I do for Astiratu today?” said a man with short dark hair and green eyes in a business suit.
“Matthias,” Liam turned around with knife in hand. “I figure if anyone can give me answers, it’s you, and you will talk. Bobby, you might want to go for a little walk because this could get really ugly.”
Bobby swallowed hard and nodded, going outside and flinching at the sound of the screams. Liam emerged four minutes later. “Sorry, but I don’t clean up my own messes and douchebag in there needs patched up bad.” Liam winked as he got in the Impala and took off.
It was night time when he reached the building in Ohio where Matthias said the boys would be. He searched the building until he found them together in an office. “Oh, thank fuck!” he cried.
“Do I know you?” Dean asked.
“He looks familiar too,” Sam said looking confused. “He was in some of those dreams fighting the monsters with us.”
“Yes!” Liam shouted. “Remember! Dean, I’m your boyfriend.”
“Hold up, I am not gay!” Dean insisted. “Look, Sir, I don’t know who you are or what kind of drug you’re on, but...”
Liam grabbed Dean by the shoulders and started roughly shaking him. “You are Dean Winchester, monster hunter! Remember, damn it!” Liam was near tears of frustration.
“Get off me!” Dean shouted and pushed him back.
“Who am I?” Sam asked.
“You’re his brother, Sam Winchester. You hunt with him. You’re gonna have a baby in about a month.”
“I am?” Sam seemed shocked.
“Yes, your girlfriend is thirty three weeks pregnant with your son. The four of us, we’re a family.”
Sam swallowed hard. “This might be insane, but I think I believe you.”
“Thank you! Dean?”
“Look, if you want to believe this nutbag, then by all means. Maybe you two should go have a bonding moment.”
Liam started to cry and Sam pulled him out of the office. They went back to Sam’s apartment where Liam told him everything. “You know,” Sam sighed. “I don’t remember any of this, but my gut is telling me you’re not as crazy as you sound.”
In the morning Liam decided to try with Dean one more time. He entered the office and saw Zachariah talking to Dean. Liam lost it and tackled the angel, pummeling him. “What is wrong with you, you psychotic son of a bitch!” Dean shouted. “I’m calling the cops because you...” Dean stopped and just started staring.
Zachariah sighed and wiped the blood from his lip. “How did you find him you massive pain in the ass?”
“Matthias spilled the beans.”
“He would never!”
“Yeah, well, you know how you people insisted I interrogate Alastair because it is an art form and I am DaVinci? Your boy lasted four minutes, and I left Bobby with buckets of blood to mop up.”
The angel shook his head. “You really should have left well enough alone. He would have been returned to you soon enough.”
Liam closed in on Zachariah. “I am warning you now, bitch, leave what I hold dear the fuck alone. Have you forgotten that back home you are nothing but a sanctimonious full of himself cockroach to me?”
Zachariah chuckled. “Oh, the trouble you have been causing lately. Defying direct orders and meddling in our affairs… God gave him back to you, and God can take him away again.”
“That happens, and you will pay dearly, understand me? You will beg for death at my hand, but you will receive no mercy. You’ve known me a long time, Zachariah. Have you ever known me to make an empty threat?”
“No,” Zachariah shook his head. “No, you always make good on your promises. Look, I didn’t mean to piss you off. This wasn’t about you, it was about them.”
“Super. Fun’s over now. Remove your little spell and give him back to me now or you’ll get a taste of what I did to Matthias.”
“Okay!” Zachariah held up his hands. “I was done with my experiment anyhow.”
Zachariah tapped his fingers on Dean’s forehead and he blinked. “What the hell? Why am I wearing a tie? My god, am I hungry. Babe, what’s going on?”
Liam pulled him in and hugged him tight. “Just dickhead angels that think they have a right to screw with lives. Don’t worry, they won’t do it again if they know what’s good for them.”
Zachariah backed out of the office and Liam blinked. “Where am I?”
“Wish I knew, Babe, but I feel like I haven’t seen you in much too long.”
They found Sam and the car and then went to a diner for some food. Dean called Bobby to see if he had a clue. “You clowns were missing for three weeks. Oh, and tell Liam thanks for the mess.”
“Mess, what mess?”
“He summoned and tortured some angel to find out where you were. Only took him four minutes, but my god, the screams. I had to call an ambulance for the meat suit, and somehow he pulled through. Took me all friggen day to mop up the blood. I tell ya, when that boy is angry he don’t screw around.”
“Yeah, makes a guy feel special to mean that much to him. Listen, I wouldn’t mention the torture to him. His memory of the last three weeks is really spotty, and I doubt he remembers that part. I apologize on his behalf for the mess though.”
Dean hung up and returned to the table. “God, I am happy to have some real food again and my favorite man as company. Liam, I am gonna take you home and we’re gonna have a week long snuggle in bed fest. How does that sound?”
“Really good to me.”
