Dean woke one morning after a hunt to see Liam sitting next to him tied up. When he sat up himself two men were in the room with guns. Sam was sitting by the window. “Hands where I can see them!” one of the men demanded.
Dean raised his hands. “Wait a minute. Is that you, Roy? It is, isn’t it. Which makes you Walt. Hiya Walt.”
The two look at each other and Walt removed his mask, his nose bloody. “Don’t matter.” Roy then took his off as well.
Dean shook his head. “Well, is it just me, or do you two seem a tad upset?”
Walt looked to Sam. “You think you can flip the switch on the apocalypse and just walk away, Sam?”
“Who told you that?” Sam swallowed hard.
“We ain’t the only hunters after you. See you in the next life.”
Sam started shaking. “Hear me out. I can explain, okay? Please “
Walt shot Sam three times. Dean moved to go to him. “Stay the hell down!” Walt ordered. Then he turned to Liam who was giving him a death stare. “I don’t know who the hell you are, but I do know you’re trouble.”
Liam chuckled. “You ain’t seen nothing yet.”
Suddenly Liam was free of the bonds and he charged Roy, tackling him to the ground. Walt watched, but couldn’t get a clear shot as the two wrestled for the gun. Liam got the gun and whacked Roy in the head and aimed for Walt, but Roy came back at him just as Liam pulled the trigger and only hit Walt in the upper thigh. Roy got the gun back with Liam biting him in the face and he quickly put two bullets in Liam’s chest.
Roy shook his head. “Such a waste. That kid really had spirit,” he turned to Dean. “See he woke when we came in and it took the both of us to get him tied up in the first place. We’ve got bites, scratches, and bruises all over us. If only he had been on our side.”
Walt sat on the edge of the bed holding his leg. “Just shoot him.”
“I don’t know...” Roy looked unsure. “Sam was justified and that kid was gonna kill us come hell or high water, but Dean...”
“He made us and we just snuffed his brother and the third musketeer, you idiot. You want to spend the rest of your life knowing Dean Winchester’s on your ass, because I don’t. Shoot him.”
Dean looked back and forth between Liam and Sam. Then he stared at Roy. “If you don’t you’ll wish you had, that I promise you.”
Walt growled and shot Dean.
Dean opened his eyes and he was in the Impala on a road at night. Astiratu was beside him. “Welcome to my playground,” Astiratu smiled.
“What?” Dean looked confused.
“Dean, don’t you remember? We’re dead now. We’re on the other side.”
Dean blinked as he thought for a moment. “Yeah. I do remember. Where’s Sam?”
Astiratu shrugged. “No idea, but I have a feeling if we follow this road we’ll find out. What? Don’t trust me on my own turf?”
Dean sighed. “What other choice do I have besides trusting you?”
Dean fired up the Impala and they drove down the dark road to a nice looking three story house. Inside was Sam sitting at a big table with a family and it looked they were having Thanksgiving dinner. Sam looked up at them. “What are you two doing in my dream?”
Astiratu beckoned him over and Sam got up to approach them. “Hate to break it to you, cupcake, but this isn’t a dream. We’re dead.”
Sam looked shocked. “But… how…?”
“Think back a minute.” Realization dawned on Sam’s face. “There you go. This is a memory.”
“What do we do now?” Sam asked.
Astiratu looked up for a second. “Right now, hide.”
The lights went out and Astiratu ushered them behind the couch while a search light searched the room. “What was that?” Dean asked.
“Zachariah, and the bastard isn’t happy. We need to move.”
Everything around them melted and they were suddenly standing in what looked like a little boy’s room. “Did you do that?” Dean asked.
“No, the Easter Bunny did,” Astiratu said sarcastically. “I told you, you’re in my playground now, but I am admittedly a little rusty with the controls,” he looked around. “Forgive me, it’s been a while.”
“Wait, I know where we are,” Dean looked around. “Sam, we’re home.”
Just then Mary came in wearing a tight white dress. “Hey, Dean. You hungry?”
Both Sam and Dean just stared at her. “This is only a memory,” Astiratu pointed out. “The real thing would be better.”
“You could do that?” Sam looked at him.
“It’s all a matter of finding the right little corner. But, for now, I think I’m going to be selfish.”
Everything melted again and they were standing it what looked like an old time cabin. Astiratu looked like Liam and he stared at the two people in the room, a dark haired man and a red haired woman. “It’s good to see you again,” the man smiled at him.
“Oh, baby!” the woman got up from the chair she was in and ran to hug him.
“You know who I am?” Liam looked surprised.
She nodded. “You’ve visited me before, but I guess you don’t remember. I remember you though. How could I forget my precious son,” she stroked his face.
“I take it this is your mother,” Dean said from the corner.
“And you are?” she looked up at him.
“Mom, um, that is my boyfriend and his brother.”
“I see,” she nodded as if trying to digest that piece of news. “Well,” she looked at Dean, “do you love him?”
“Yes, ma’am,” Dean nodded. “Very much. You wanted a special kid, and believe me, you got one.”
“I know,” she smiled and pulled Liam back to her chair and had him sit on her lap. “I knew from the moment I laid eyes on you I had gotten exactly what I prayed for.”
“But I got you killed,” Liam frowned.
She reached up and ran her fingers through his hair. “Baby, it was my time. That’s all there was to it. It would’ve happened whether you had been born or not. My only regret is not being able to watch you grow up. You are so handsome, and you look so much like my father. And Baby, I am so sorry for what your father did to you.”
He gave her a small smile. “Not your fault.”
“Not yours either. Your father was a good man when I met him. He had a temper, but I never thought… I watched you from here and I saw what he did, and couldn’t do anything about it. You don’t know how much it hurt me to watch my special little one get treated like that.”
Liam hugged his mother tight and she returned the hug. “I survived. I just wanted to know if you loved me.”
She cupped his cheek and smiled. “More than anything. You weren’t just a baby, you were an answer to a desperate prayer. I couldn’t stop smiling every time you moved, even when you were bigger and it hurt. The morning you were born, my goodness you kicked up a storm. Then you scared me, but all was right with the world again when I heard you cry.”
Liam stood up and turned to the man. “Evan, it’s been a while. I’ve missed you.”
His brother hugged him. “Not so long since you were last here, but before that, yeah, quite a while. I missed you too, my pain in the ass baby brother.”
Liam chuckled. “I guess I was a bit of a pain.”
“A bit?” Evan snorted. “Looking after you was a full time job.”
“I’m sorry I took away your childhood. It wasn’t fair that you were raising a baby at ten years old.”
“No, it wasn’t,” Evan agreed. “But still not your fault. It was our father’s fault. Someone had to take care of you, and he certainly wasn’t going to do it.”
Liam smiled at him. “I really loved you and looked up to you. I was lucky to have you.”
“I loved you, and I still do. Much like mother here, I wished you could’ve had better. Growing up in that house was hell. It wasn’t so bad when mother was alive, but after… like night and day.”
Liam sighed. “It was what it was. Anyhow, I have some more visits to make.”
He blew them each a kiss and stepped back. “Are you done being selfish?” Dean asked.
“Not quite.”
The room changed again and they were in a much more modern living room. “Heaven has not been heaven without you,” a man threw himself at Liam and kissed him passionately.
Dean huffed at the sight in front of him. “You must be Jason.”
“I am,” Jason nodded. “And from the way you’re glaring at me, you must be my replacement. Hunt go bad or something?”
“You could say that,” Liam frowned. “And you cannot be replaced dumbass, but I couldn’t hold that candle forever.”
“I know,” Jason nodded and ran a hand through his salt and pepper hair. “I just hope they’ve been treating you like you deserve.”
“No need to worry about that,” Liam assured him.
“I… I should’ve treated you better. All I did was take your money.”
“Don’t,” Liam glared at him. “You loved me, and that’s all I wanted. You couldn’t buy me things, but I didn’t care. Dean here couldn’t buy me things either. I’m just a love sponge that will soak up all you’ve got to give.”
Jason looked between Dean and Liam. “So, what do we do now? I don’t think either of us wants to share.”
Liam sighed. “Well, you’re just going to have to learn to share, won’t you? I’m sure as hell not choosing between you. I couldn’t.”
“Liam,” Sam spoke up. “It’s great that you’ve been visiting loved ones, but really, we’d like our turn.”
Liam sighed and turned to kiss Jason’s cheek. “Sam is right. Give Curtis my best when you see him.” He closed his eyes and concentrated for a minute. “Not the best of ideas right now, but… Follow me.”
He led them out the front door into a stone paved street. They were in a city that looked like something out of Medieval Digest, and the sky was white. Trees dotted the place as did hanging plants. “Where is this?” Sam asked, looking around?
“Michael’s city,” Liam answered.
“And why did you bring us here?” Dean asked.
“You wanted to see your mother, didn’t you? This way.”
He led them through crowded streets to a giant building. Inside was a massive library. Liam took them over to a table where their mother sat reading. “Mom?” Dean smiled at her.
She looked up, startled. “Oh, my...” She put the book down and stood up. “You’re...”
“Your sons,” Dean looked at her. “And we really missed you,” his voice was emotional.
“I wasn’t expecting either of you for a while yet, but I guess...”
“Yeah,” Sam nodded. “Dangers of the job.”
She bit her lip and frowned. “I didn’t want my boys raised into that life. I was very angry with your father for a while because of that, but I guess...”
Dean shrugged. “He had to do something after you...” He swallowed hard and hugged her. “God, I missed you.”
She put her hands on his face. “And I missed you. I love you both so much. And you,” she turned to Sam. “You got so handsome and so big.”
Sam hugged her, trying to hold back tears. “We didn’t mean for it to happen, but you’re a grandmother now.”
“I know,” she smiled. “I’ve been keeping a watch on you two. It was sweet of you to name your son after your father, and he looks so much like you did when you were a baby. You were a pretty easy going baby too, and so smart. John definitely takes after his daddy.”
“And if we don’t get back this time...” Sam frowned.
“I’ve got a plan for that,” Liam said.
Mary turned to him. “And you must be Dean’s boyfriend, Liam.”
Dean looked stunned. “You know and you’re not upset?”
“Sweetie, I can see from up here how happy he makes you. I found out who he really is too, so don’t worry about that either.”
“You um, weren’t watching the more personal parts, were you?” Dean asked.
“Definitely not,” she chuckled. “But you’ve got yourself quite a catch there. I was worried about you for a while, both of you actually, but I’m very happy to see things are turning out. Listen, as much as I would love to just sit with you three all day, you should probably keep moving. Angels are looking for you.”
Liam nodded. “Yeah, we need to get to Joshua.”
“Who’s Joshua?” Dean asked.
“You’ll see.” Liam answered and beckoned them to follow.
“I love you both,” Mary called out as they left.
Liam led them back through the streets and to a stone bridge that ran over a river. On the other side of the bridge was a beautiful garden. Suddenly Sam and Dean disappeared and Liam cursed.
Sam and Dean found themselves in a living room. “We’re at our old house again, and without our tour guide,” Dean looked around. “I don’t like this.”
Suddenly the door and windows were bricked over and Zachariah appeared with an evil grin. Sam glared at him. “You did this.”
“And I’m just getting started. I mean, guys. Did you really think you could just sneak past me into Mission Control?” Two angels walked up behind them and grabbed them. “Let’s brass tack this, shall we?”
Dean rolled his eyes. “You gonna ball gag us until we say yes? Huh, yeah, I’ve heard that one too.”
Zachariah punched Dean in the gut. “I’m going to do a lot more than that. I’ve cleared my schedule. Let me tell you something. I was on the fast track once. Employee of the month, every month, forever. I would walk these halls and people would avert their eyes! I had respect! And then they assigned me you. Now look at me. I can’t close the deal on a couple of flannel wearing maggots? Everybody’s laughing at me, and they’re right to do it. So! Say yes, don’t say yes; I’m still going to take it out of your asses. It’s personal now boys, and the last person in the history of creation you want as your enemy is me. And I’ll tell you why. Lucifer may be strong, but I’m petty. I’m going to be the angel on your shoulder for the rest of eternity.”
“Is that so?” a deep voice came from behind them.
Zachariah turned and saw Astiratu standing with Jesus. “Sir!” Zachariah looked a little scared. “I was just...”
“I know what you were doing,” Jesus took a step forward. “And I’m telling you to knock it the fuck off!”
Sam and Dean looked stunned. “You swear?” Dean voiced their surprise.
Jesus smirked at them. “Every damn day. It’s good for the soul.” He then turned to Zachariah. “You think you’re petty, you little piss ant? Clearly you don’t know me well enough yet. You should see what happened to the two men who shot my cookie and his friends. Then again, maybe it’s better if you don’t. And then my little cookie burst through my door while I was in the middle of something very upset that his friends were missing. He knew who was responsible, and lo and behold.”
Zachariah glared at Astiratu. “You stupid whore!”
Jesus growled at that. “Don’t call him that, especially not in my presence, unless you enjoy the rack that is. A whore my cookie is not. He’s also twenty times smarter than you on your best day, so you had better watch yourself. Now leave!”
Zachariah swallowed hard and disappeared. “Um, hi, again,” Sam looked at Jesus awkwardly.
“Hello again, Sam Winchester. Feeling better I hope.”
“Yeah,” Sam nodded. “Better than I was thanks to you.”
“Cookie, huh?” Dean chuckled.
Jesus smiled and stroked Astiratu’s hair. “Yes, he’s sweet and delicious. Don’t worry, the three of you will be taken care of.”
“I don’t mean to look a gift horse in the mouth or anything,” Dean stepped forward. “But um, where are you with this whole apocalypse thing? Where’s your Father for that matter?”
Jesus sighed. “My Father, I don’t know. I haven’t spoken with Him in quite some time. Me, I am trying to run this place,” He motioned around them. “As for the apocalypse, I was putting my chips on you three.”
Dean shook his head. “I’m not saying yes to Michael, and I don’t know how to kill Lucifer. Also, in case you missed it, we’re kind of dead at the moment.”
“I wasn’t expecting you to say yes Michael. It’s also true that you can’t kill Lucifer. However, there is a way. Now, to tell you straight out would be cheating.”
“But I like it when we cheat,” Astiratu looked at Him with puppy eyes.
Jesus chuckled and leaned in to kiss Astiratu softly. “Not this time, Cookie. I’m sorry, I know you hate groping around in the dark, but you always find what you’re looking for. This is a big boy test. Now, I’m sending you three back. You’ll even get to remember this time, except you, Cookie. Don’t worry, I’m only going to modify your memory a little. You’ll still remember your loved ones at least. I won’t take that from you. I love you, Cookie.”
There was a bright flash of light and all three men took a deep breath and sat up. Blood was still everywhere, but they seemed to be whole and unharmed. Sam looked out the window. “Holy… Guys, I think I know what happened to Roy and Walt.”
Dean got up and raced to the window with Liam. A blackened truck sat in the parking lot with emergency responders milling around cleaning things up. Dean looked to Liam. “Note to self, don’t piss Jesus off.”
“Yeah,” Sam nodded. “Um, I think we should get some breakfast and go home. I really, really want to hold my son right now.”
