Liam lay in a hospital bed with a nurse in the room giving him a breathing treatment. Dean came in with a dozen red roses in a glass vase. Liam looked surprised as Dean set the flowers on the night stand. “What’s the occasion?” Liam asked. “It’s not my birthday.”
“I know,” Dean smiled at him. “But you caught that really nasty bug and now you’re in here with pneumonia. I know you like roses, and I wanted to cheer you up.” Dean sat in a chair beside him and patted his leg. “What else can I do to make you feel better?”
“Kill me,” Liam answered. “I can’t breathe and this bed is uncomfortable.”
“Sorry, can’t do that,” Dean said as he grabbed Liam’s hand and squeezed it. “You’re tough, you’ll get through this and come home. I want you to be around for a very long time.”
Liam gave him a small smile. “Thank you for the roses, they do cheer me up. Another foot rub would be nice too.”
“Alright,” Dean nodded and moved to the end of the bed and started rubbing his feet. “That feel better?”
“Much,” Liam closed his eyes and enjoyed it. “Stuff like the flowers and foot rubs just because really does make me feel good. It shows you really care because you’re not getting anything in return.”
“Well, I get you, which is good enough for me. That, and I’m trying to butter you up a little.”
Liam groaned. “I knew it. Just lay it on me.”
Dean sighed. “It’s nothing serious. I just know how you hate being left out of things, but Babe, you’re really sick. I’m just not gonna be around for a few days because we’re going to Bobby’s. We’re gonna hunt Crowley. The slime ball has gone into hiding, and Sam and Bobby have this crazy idea that Cas might be working with him.”
Liam nodded. “And I have to stay here and behave.”
“Exactly. When I come back I wanna see you home. I really do just want you to feel better.” Dean kissed his big toe, then moved up to kiss his lips. “I’ve gotta go, but I’ll see you soon. I love you.”
“I love you too,” Liam gave him a small smile as he left.
Liam stayed in the hospital a few more days. Then a new nurse came in and gave him a warm smile. “Time for you to get out of here.”
“Wait,” Liam was confused. “The doctor wanted to keep me till Sunday.”
“I guess you get out of here a little early then,” she said as she started unhooking him from everything.
“Does Natalie know so she can come get me?”
“Of course. Your ride is waiting outside.”
She let him get dressed and he was wheeled outside to where a blue van was waiting. “Wait a second, that isn’t Natalie,” Liam started to get suspicious. He tried to get up but his arms were grabbed and tied behind him. Then he was thrown into the back of the van that had symbols drawn all over the inside.
Crowley was also in the back of the van. “Hello there,” the demon gave him a little smirk. “I know I’m playing with fire here, but as you can see I’m taking precautions not to get burned.” He grabbed Liam’s phone and dialed Dean’s number. “Hello, Dean. Fancy a chat?”
“Crowley, let him go now, or I swear...”
“Right, right. You'll rip me a cornucopia of orifices. Let's get to the bit where I tell you how this goes. Your chocolate's been in my peanut butter for far too long.”
“I am going to kill you.”
“Oh Dean, ever the wit. I've got your uh, whatever the hell he is, and I'm keeping him until I'm satisfied that you've backed the hell off!”
“I'm telling you, last chance to let him go easy.”
“You're adorable when you get all threatening. Don't worry, I won't hurt him. Provided you and Jolly Green stand down. Got it? Splendid. Kisses.”
“Wait!” Dean shouted. “Before I do anything, give me proof of life. Let me talk to him.”
“Fine,” Crowley growled and put the phone to Liam’s ear. “Talk.”
“Liam, are you all right?” Dean asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine. He’s got all these weird symbols everywhere but they aren’t hurting me. Whatever he wants you to do don’t do it!”
“How sweet,” Crowley wretched and took the phone back. “Don’t worry, I’ve got him locked down tight, his inner freak is limp at the moment. Wasn’t easy, but I figured out the recipe. Back off or you’ll only wish he was dead.” Crowley hung up.
Liam was taken to a warehouse and tied to a concrete column in a room with a lot of the same symbols on the wall. Crowley left, but a bunch of other demons stayed behind to guard him. “All this for me? You could at least give a guy something to do.” A demon backhanded him hard and he sighed.
He sat there for a little over twenty four hours. He was given water, but no food. Because of the uncomfortable position he hadn’t been able to sleep either. “So uh, how long is this gonna go on?” he asked, but was ignored.
Thee was a commotion outside and one by one his guards went out to see what was going on. Then Dean came in. “God, am I glad to see you,” Dean kissed him and then cut the ropes binding him. “Are you okay?”
“Tired and hungry, but I’ll live if the demons swarming the place don’t kill us.”
Dean handed Liam a gun filled with salt rounds. “You see any shoot.”
Liam nodded and followed Dean out. Several demons came at them but they shot them and kept moving. They found Sam locked in a room. Dean shot the lock off and they made it out. “We need a way back to Bobby’s,” Dean looked to his brother.
Sam ran off and came back with a stolen car. “Looks like you borrow without asking too,” Liam said as he got into the back. “Making any progress on whatever is is you’re doing?”
“Cas has been trying to stop us, but yeah,” Dean nodded. “Turns out H.P. Lovecraft may have actually opened the door to Purgatory back in 1937. Bobby went to run down that lead while we looked for you.”
“What did you do that for?” Liam smacked Dean on the back of the head. “You should have forgotten about me and all ran down the lead.”
Dean turned around and glared at Liam. “You are too important to me for that. I wasn’t gonna let Crowley or those demons harm a hair on your head.”
Liam sighed. “Kidnapping me was likely a distraction, and it worked. I… Look, I’m flattered you care, but some things are more important than my life.”
“Not to me,” Dean shot back. “If that makes me weak, then so be it. You, my brother, any of my family takes priority.”
They made it back to Bobby’s and Dean laid Liam on the couch. Bobby filled them in on what he had found. The door to Purgatory had indeed been opened before, and what came out just happened to be an old flame of Bobby’s that posed as a Medieval Studies professor at a college. “I’m going to meet her in a little while.”
“Sam and I will go with you,” Dean said.
“What about me?” Liam asked. “You know how I hate to be left out of things.”
“I know,” Dean stroked his hair. “But you were snatched out of the hospital a few days early. We don’t know if you’re still sick.”
“Don’t treat me like I’m a child. I’m coming, end of story.”
They headed into town into an alley. Eleanor was nowhere in sight. “Where is she?” Dean asked.
Bobby shrugged. “She said to meet her here. I'll try her again.” He took out his phone and dialed. They heard a ringtone and followed it. Eleanor was lying on the ground against a dumpster hurt pretty bad. Bobby knelt by her. “El?”
She looked up at him. “Hey. I guess I could've used your help after all.”
“What happened?” Sam asked.
“They took me. I got away.” She opened her coat to reveal blood covering her stomach.
Bobby shook his head. “Oh, Ellie. What have they done to you?”
She chuckled. “Everything. The demon I could've handled, but when the angel stepped in… I told him, Bobby. They have enough to crack Purgatory wide open.”
Bobby took her hand. “Tell me. I need to know.”
“They need virgin blood. That's a milk run for them. And they need the blood of a Purgatory native, and well, they've got plenty of that now.”
“Have they opened it yet?” Dean asked.
She shook her head. “Tomorrow. The moon, an eclipse. I'm sorry, Bobby.”
“No, it's okay. It's okay. Tell us where they are.”
Before Eleanor could say any more she died. Bobby sighed deeply and closed her eyes. Castiel appeared behind them. “I'm sorry this had to happen. Crowley got carried away.”
Dean glared at him. “You don't even see it, do you? How totally off the rails you are!”
“Enough! I don't care what you think. I've tried to make you understand. You won't listen. So let me make this simple. Please, go home and let me stop Raphael. I won't ask again.”
“Well, good, because I think you already know the answer.”
Castiel shook his head. “I wish it hadn't come to this. Well rest assured, when this is all over, I will save Liam, but only if you stand down.”
“Save Liam from what?” Dean asked.
Castiel disappeared and reappeared behind Liam. He touched the blond who fell to the ground. Then Castiel was gone. Sam knelt down beside Liam. “He’s not breathing! I don’t feel a pulse either.”
“Then fix him!” Dean shouted.
Sam did CPR until he was breathing on his own again and they took him back to Bobby’s. “What do we do?” Dean asked as he put Liam back on the couch. “What did Cas do to him?”
Bobby shrugged. “From how labored his breathing sounds, I’d say put him back to square one.” Bobby put a hand on his forehead. “Yep, burning up.”
“Then we take him back to the hospital,” Dean rubbed his face with his hands.
“He won’t be safe there,” Bobby argued. “Plus, I don’t think it’ll do much good. Whatever Cas did, he doesn’t want it to be cured.”
“We can’t just let him die!” Dean shouted.
Sam put a hand on his brother’s shoulder. “Maybe that’s exactly what we have to do.”
Dean glared at his brother. “Are you nuts? No! We will find Cas and we will make him fix this.”
Sam shook his head. “Cas said he would only fix this if we stand down. Obviously we can’t do that. You heard what he said. Some things are more important than his life.”
“Well he was wrong!”
“Am I interrupting something?” Balthazar appeared.
“Look what the cat dragged in,” Bobby looked to him.
Dean crossed his arms. “What the hell took you so long?”
“Honestly? I was having second thoughts.”
“About?” Dean raised an eyebrow.
“About whether to help you. I was thinking maybe... Maybe I should rip out your sticky bits instead.”
“And what did you decide?” Sam asked.
He pulled out a piece of paper and handed it to Dean. “Cas and Crowley are there. That's where the show gets started.”
Dean nodded. “Alright, well give us a minute to pack up and then zap us there.”
“No. I don't think so. I'm betraying a friend here. A very powerful friend. We all are. So I think I've stuck my neck out far enough already. Good luck.” he disappeared.
Bobby and Sam started packing everything they thought they might need. Dean sat with Liam. “Dean, we need you with us,” Bobby said as he grabbed a bag.
“Bobby, I can’t,” Dean shook his head. “He’s dying, and I...”
“Then don’t let him die for nothing. I’m sorry, son, but there’s nothing we can do for him. We need all three of us for this.”
Dean nodded and got up off the couch. “Okay. Babe, you hang in there. I’ll be back.”
They parked outside the building and scouted it with binoculars. “I count a dozen mooks, probably more.” Bobby looked at them.
“Demons?” Dean asked.
“Angels.”
Dean sighed. “Well how the hell are we gonna take out that many angels?”
“We don't. We'll ninja our way in.”
“Awesome. Yeah, til they hear your knee squeak.”
“Shut up,” Sam told both of them. “You hear that?”
They hear a repetitive booming sound. Dean stared at ripples in a nearby puddle. “What the hell is that? T Rex maybe?”
Bobby looked up and saw a massive black cloud of demon smoke coming their way. “Holy mother of...”
“Get in the car!” Dean shouted and jumped in the car.
Sam and Bobby followed and the smoke flew by, flipping the car over but continuing toward the building. Several minutes later they all started to regain consciousness. “Everyone good?” Dean asked.
“I think so,” Sam answered.
Bobby groaned and started crawling out of the car. “Come on, we gotta go.”
They made their way through the halls. Dead angels were everywhere. They entered the room with Crowley, only Raphael was with him. Crowley was chanting the incantation. Dean threw an angel killing sword at Raphael’s back and the archangel caught it. They both turned and Crowley threw them all off the stairs. “Bit busy, gentlemen. Be with you in a moment.” Crowley finished the incantation and nothing happened. “Maybe I said it wrong.”
Castiel appeared with an empty jar of blood. “You said it perfectly. All you needed was this.” He set the empty jar down. Bobby, Sam, and Dean got up.
“I see,” Crowley went to the wall where they had the symbol painted and scooped a little bit up with his finger. “And we've been working with...” he tasted it. “Dog blood. Naturally.”
Raphael glared at Castiel. “Enough of these games, Castiel. Give us the blood.”
Crowley rolled his eyes. “Game's over. His jar's empty. So, Castiel, how'd your ritual go? Better than ours, I'll bet.”
A bright light came from Castiel that made everyone shield their eyes. “You can't imagine what it's like. They're all inside me. Millions upon millions of souls.”
Crowley sighed. “Sounds sexy. Exit stage Crowley.” he disappeared.
Raphael stared at Castiel frightened. “Now, what's the matter, Raphael? Somebody clip your wings?”
“Castiel, please. You let the demon go, but not your own brother?”
“The demon I have plans for. You on the other hand...” He snapped his fingers and Raphael exploded. Castiel turned to the brothers. “So, you see, I saved you.”
Dean nodded. “Sure thing, Cas. Thank you.”
“You doubted me, fought against me, but I was right all along.”
Astiratu appeared. “No, you weren’t friend. I’m glad you defeated Raphael, but now this needs to stop.”
Castiel shook his head. “No, I'm not finished yet. Raphael had many followers, and I must punish them all severely.”
Astiratu sighed. “You know the saying, absolute power corrupts absolutely. I think the corruption I did to you was enough. Let’s put all those souls back where they belong and let things settle down, shall we?”
“No,” Castiel stood firm. “I am more powerful than even you now. You can’t stop me. I do admire you trying to stand up to me though. How is your body?”
“Dead because of you. I do not appreciate being used as a bargaining chip. I thought our friendship meant more to you than that, but it turns out I don’t know you at all.”
Castiel sighed. “I’m sorry it came to that. I will gladly right the wrong. I had to use something of great value to them, but they were still not deterred.”
“Just listen to me, Cas. You were not meant for this kind of power. It’s not safe.”
“No, you listen to me. I'm your new God. A better one. So you will bow down and profess your love unto me, your Lord.”
