Dean lay next to Liam panting and looking into his eyes. “How many other men have you been with?” Dean asked.
Liam looked at him strangely. “This is kind of an odd time to be asking about that, don’t you think?”
Dean shrugged. “Maybe, but it’s been on my mind. You really like sex and you’re very good at it.”
Liam sighed and raised his head to prop it up on his elbow. “You’re pretty fucking fantastic at it yourself. Look, Dean, we both know that we both have a past. What matters now is that we’re together and very happy. I haven’t cheated on you, and I’ll murder you if I ever find out you cheated on me.”
Dean kissed Liam. “No, I haven’t cheated on you. Although, there was you and Sam.”
Liam shook his head. “We thought you were dead so that hardly counts.”
“Did you um, were you with anyone else while I was in hell?”
Liam groaned and fell back on the pillow. “What is with you and the sudden curiosity?”
“I’ll take that as a yes.”
Liam looked over at him. “I thought you were dead and gone forever and I had a giant hole to fill, so yes, I tried to fill it. Didn’t work… But since the day you showed up on the doorstep again it’s been only you.”
Dean sighed. “If you had to guess, how many men? And keep in mind I know that this over a span of over three hundred years.”
“I don’t know, okay?” Liam confessed. “Did you keep track?”
“No,” Dean admitted it. “Never thought it would matter. I never thought I would meet someone like you, especially not a guy.”
“I wasn’t holding out much hope for the future either. But, here we are. Even if we were fixed up by a cupid on someone’s orders it was a good decision.”
“It was,” Dean agreed and pulled Liam in for another kiss.
Liam never saw Dean reach for something and next thing he knew Dean’s fingers were in his mouth putting something under his tongue. Then Dean held his mouth closed with a hand while Liam glared up at him. “What the hell was that?” Liam asked when his mouth was uncovered again.
“Just a little agrimony,” Dean answered. “Nothing for you to worry about, shouldn’t hurt you. It’s even supposed to be good for your liver.”
“But why are you shoving herbs in my mouth?” Liam got suspicious. Next thing he knew his arms were being grabbed and he was being handcuffed to the headboard. “Dean!” he shouted. “If this is your attempt at being kinky I don’t like it and we just finished having sex.”
Dean took a rag and gagged Liam. Liam then started struggling with wide eyes. “Babe, I know I’m freaking you out, but please calm down and don’t hurt yourself. This is for your own good. This is for everyone’s good. That little seven month old down there, he is going to grow up and be happy if I have anything to say about it. You probably won’t see me again for a while, so, I love you more than you can imagine.”
Dean showed Liam the key to the cuffs and set it on the dresser on the other side of the room. Then he went downstairs and saw Sam on the sitting room floor with John. “Hey, Sammy, Liam isn’t feeling well,” Dean lied.
“That sucks,” Sam frowned. “What’s he got?”
“Probably just a cold. I’m gonna go out for a bit, probably pick some stuff up for him. Do me a favor and check in on him in a bit.”
“Okay,” Sam nodded.
Dean took one last emotion filled look up the stairs before leaving. After about an hour Sam decided to go check on Liam and was horrified at what he found. He took the gag out of Liam’s mouth. “What the hell happened?”
“I don’t know,” Liam whimpered. “He shoved something in my mouth and then tied me up and said goodbye.”
“Was it agrimony?” Sam asked.
“Yeah,” Liam nodded. “I think that’s what he said it was. Why?”
“He was binding up your inner freak. This isn’t good. Do you know where the key to the cuffs is?”
“He put it on the dresser.”
Sam took the cuffs off. “Come on, we gotta go get the stupid son of a bitch.”
They found Dean at a motel and Liam stayed in the car while Sam went in. “How could you?” Sam looked at his brother. “You bound up our best weapon and handcuffed the person you claim to love more than anything to the bed and just took off to kill yourself.”
“I’m not going to kill myself,” Dean couldn’t even look at him.
“No? So Michael’s not about to make you his muppet? What the hell, man? This is how it ends? You just walk out?”
“I really don’t feel like I have a choice anymore. We’ve got squat. All we’ve done is go to two places where Astiratu killed two horseman. He’s doing all the heavy lifting here.”
“Well, maybe that’s because that is what he was created to do. Except, right now he can’t do any lifting.”
“Good. Keep him out of the way so he doesn’t get hurt. Don’t you get it? After the last hunt he got killed right along with us. You were already dead so you didn’t have to watch it, but holy hell did he fight. That crazy son of a bitch tackled a guy with gun to try and take it. He almost managed it, but not quite. Believe me, I’ve got conditions, and one of them is that he gets locked up in a padded room so he doesn’t get hurt.”
“And you think he’ll go into a padded room to sit everything out quietly? Dean, he won’t even go to a small town jail quietly.”
“I know, but if Michael wants me bad enough he’ll find a way. Sam, I’m trying to end this. That little boy of yours that I’ve been watching turn from a squirming lump that poops into a little person, I want him to have a future.”
“And you don’t think I want that too?” Sam shouted.
“So, you see? We have the same goal. If I gotta draw the short stick to stop everything, well...”
“Don’t you remember? Jesus himself told us there was another way.”
“And how many more people have to die while we’re digging around in the dark looking for it? Sam, I was the last to die. First I watched those assholes shoot you, then I watched the love of my life fight like hell before getting gunned down himself. I sat in that motel room with both of you dead!”
“And now we’re fine. There isn’t even a scar.”
“Sammy, don’t you get it? It could happen again. The walls are coming down around us, and I can do something to put a stop to it. I can make a deal that will keep all of you safe. Right now that’s all I want, for the people I get out of bed for to be safe.”
“Well, I’m not letting you do this.”
“How are you going to stop me?”
“With help.”
Castiel appeared in the room and touched his fingers to Dean’s forehead and he passed out. They took him to Bobby’s to keep a watch on him. They sat in Bobby’s library and did more research trying to find the hidden clue. Dean leaned against the wall and sighed with his arms crossed. “Nuclear’s the only option we have left. Michael can ice the devil, save a boatload of people.”
Bobby glared up at him. “But not all of them. We gotta think of something else.”
“Yeah, well, that’s easy for you to say. But if Lucifer burns this mother down, and I could’ve done something about it, guess what? That’s on me.”
Castiel suddenly grabbed his head. “Cas, you okay?” Sam asked.
“No,” Castiel shook his head. “Something’s happening.” Castiel suddenly disappeared.
The angel returned a little while later with a muddy body. He laid the young man down on the cot and everyone rushed over. “Holy hell,” Sam scrunched his features. “That’s our brother Adam. Cas, what the hell?”
“I don’t know why, but the angels brought him back. I know one thing for sure. We need to hide him now.” Cas put a hand on Adam’s chest and put the same etchings in his ribs he did with the others.
Adam woke up and looked around. “Where am I?”
“It's okay. Just relax, you're safe,” Sam assured him.
“Who the hell are you?”
Dean stood over him. “You're going to find this a little...a lot crazy, but we're actually your brothers.”
Sam nodded. “It's the truth. John Winchester was our father, too. See, I'm Sam-”
“Yeah, and I'm sure that's Dean. I know who you are. They warned me about you, especially the blond.”
“Who did?” Liam asked. “And what exactly was said about me?”
“The angels. You’re a tricky bitch I was told.”
Dean looked at him. “So why don't you just tell us everything? Start from the beginning.”
“Well, I was dead and in heaven. These angels, they popped out of nowhere, and they tell me that I'm chosen.”
“For what?” Sam asked.
“To save the world. Me and some archangel are going to kill the devil. Michael. I'm his uh, sword or vessel or something, I don't know.”
Dean shook his head. “Well, that's insane.”
“Not necessarily,” Castiel said. “Maybe they're moving on from you, Dean.”
“Makes sense,” Liam nodded. “The contract is in the bloodline. It’s supposed to be the eldest child, but in a pinch...”
Sam sat back and crossed his arms. “Look, no way. After everything that's happened? All that crap about destiny? Suddenly the angels have a Plan B? Does that smell right to anybody?”
Adam sighed. “You know this has been a really moving family reunion, but uh, I got a thing, so...”
“Sit down. Just listen, okay? Please,” Sam begged. “The angels are lying to you. They're full of crap.”
“Yeah, I don't think so,” Adam shook his head. “They’re angels.”
“I don’t know how I know this, but angels suck,” Liam said. “No offense, Cas. I haven’t actually known you long, but you don’t suck.”
“Um, thanks,” Castiel gave him an odd look.
Sam sighed and turned back to Adam. “They tell you they were gonna roast half the planet?”
“They said the fight might get pretty hairy, but it is the devil, right? So we got to stop him.”
“Yeah, but there's another way,” Sam insisted.
Adam looked at him. “Great. What is it?”
“Don’t know yet,” Sam admitted. “Look, Adam, you don't know me from a hole in the wall, I know. But I'm begging you. Please, just trust me. Give me some time.”
“Give me one good reason.”
“Because we're blood,” Sam answered.
“John Winchester was some guy who took me to a baseball game once a year. I don't have a dad. So we may be blood, but we are not family. My mom is my family. And if I do my job, I get to see her again. So no offense, but she's the one I give a rat's ass about, not you.”
Sam sighed. “Fair enough. But if you have one good memory of dad, just one, then you'll give us a little more time. Please.”
Adam sighed. “Can I at least have some food?”
Sam nodded. “Yeah, that we can arrange. Liam, can you please make him a sandwich or something?”
“Sure,” Liam got up and headed to the kitchen.
Liam sat at the table with Adam while the kid ate and stared at him. “What?” Liam raised an eyebrow.
“All the bad stuff the angels said about you, is it true?”
Liam sighed and his eyes flashed red. “I don’t know exactly what they told you, but it probably depends on whether or not I like you.”
“Well, do you like me?”
“Haven’t decided yet. Because I really do like Sam and Dean I’ll give you a fair shake. But um, hurt them in any way, shape, or form, I can promise you whatever the angels said about me will seem like a fluff piece.”
“Point made.”
“Kid, the angels don’t like me because they can’t screw with me and twist me for their purposes. I’m a very independent person that does things my own way, screw what they want. I also happen to be extremely protective of my people. So yeah, hurt them and I’ll make your worst nightmare seem like a cakewalk. Cooperate and become one of my people I will personally ensure nothing ever touches you again. Now, if you’ll excuse me, nature calls.”
When Liam was gone Adam started toward the door. “Going somewhere?” Sam said from behind him.
Adam grumbled and headed back to the table. “You know, you pitched this whole dewy eyed bromance thing, but the truth is, I'm on lock down, aren't I?”
Sam sat with him. “Adam, you may not believe it, but dad was trying to protect you by keeping you from all of this.”
“Yeah well, I guess the monster that ate me didn't get that memo.”
“You remember that?”
“Oh yeah.”
Liam came back then. “You were supposed to watch him,” Sam said.
“I had to pee! Sue me...”
Sam shook his head and went back down to the basement where Castiel was keeping an eye on Dean in Bobby’s panic room. “Uh, why don't you go help keep an eye on Adam? We almost lost him because of Liam’s bladder.”
“Is this really necessary?” Dean looked at his brother.
Sam shrugged. “Well, I mean, we got our hands full, Dean. A house full of flight risks.”
“That kid's not taking a bullet for me. I’m tired, man. I’m tired of fighting who I'm supposed to be.”
“Well, do you think maybe you could take a half a second and stop trying to sacrifice yourself for a change? Maybe we could actually stick together?”
“I don’t think so. Not this time.”
“If not for me, then for Liam.”
“I’m doing this for him! I don’t want Lucifer wearing him to the prom.”
Sam laughed. “Dean, you honestly think someone that stubborn is ever going to give in?”
“Sam, back in that field I saw something in his eyes. Lucifer is sure he’ll say yes in time, and it makes me feel like there’s something more to the story that we don’t know. Go ask him, I’ll bet the answer surprises you.”
Sam nodded. “Fine, I will.”
He closed and locked the door on Dean and went to find Castiel and talk to him first. “Hey, Cas, um, Astiratu seems to dislike Lucifer more than he dislikes anybody else. Dean said to ask him, but because of the binding on him and everything, I was hoping maybe you knew what the deal was.”
“He didn’t tell you?”
“Tell us what?”
Castiel looked around for Liam before speaking again. “It’s really not my story to tell, but… Lucifer was Astiratu’s first love.”
Sam’s eyes narrowed. “You’re shitting me.”
“No. God of chaos, lord of the underworld, it seemed like a perfect match. That was until Astiratu kind of stepped in it. He-”
“Yeah, the lore told us what Astiratu did, what did Lucifer do?”
“Well, Astiratu is extremely smart. He knew he was in trouble and he decided to disappear for a while. He thought maybe if he holed up somewhere no one could find him things would blow over. He only told one being where he was going.”
“Lucifer,” Sam guessed.
“Exactly. Lucifer sold him out. He told God he knew where the fugitive was and led Kurai straight to him, getting in one last romantic tryst before handing Astiratu over.”
“Wow, that’s cold.”
“That’s Lucifer. That is why if you ever flat out betray Astiratu he will rip your heart out and feed it to you still beating.”
“Dean wants to turn himself over because he’s worried Lucifer can get Astiratu to say yes. Considering this information, you think maybe there’s a chance?”
“Maybe. They were together nearly four hundred years. Of course, when you piss Astiratu off he doesn’t forgive and he doesn’t forget.”
Sam sighed. “Great, so things just got more complicated. Exactly what we needed.”
Liam went down to check on Dean. He heard a crash and peeked in. He didn’t see Dean anywhere so he opened the door and went in. Dean grabbed him from behind while choking him. “Please don’t make me actually hurt you,” Dean begged. Liam punched Dean in the face and Dean tightened his hold to cut off Liam’s air. “I’m doing this for you, you idiot.”
After a little while Liam went limp and Dean let go right away. He laid Liam down on the floor and checked to make sure the blond was breathing again before escaping. When Liam didn’t come back after a while Castiel went to check on him and found him.
Liam was taken up to the library to recover and Castiel went in search of Dean, returning with him bloody and unconscious. “What the hell happened to him?” Sam asked.
“Me,” Castiel answered.
“Well, we lost Adam too,” Sam sighed. “Bobby says he just disappeared.”
“The angels took him,” Castiel said.
Bobby narrowed his eyes. “What do you mean, the angels took Adam? You branded his ribs, didn’t you?”
“Yes. Adam must have tipped them.”
“How?” Bobby asked.
“I don’t know. Maybe in a dream.”
“Well, where would they have taken him?” Sam asked.
“There’s only one place I can think of.”
Dean woke up handcuffed to the cot in Bobby’s panic room with Sam watching him. “Word to the wise, don’t piss off the nerd angels. So how’s it going?” Dean sat up.
“Well, you choked out the man you love, or at least you say you do.”
“I made sure he was breathing before I left him. How is he?”
“He’s shaken up and has a headache, but he’ll live. Oh, and Adam’s gone. The angels have him.”
“Where?”
“That room where they took you. Cas did a little sneaking around since Astiratu is still bound.”
“And?”
“And the place is crawling with mooks. Pretty much a no shot in hell, hail Mary kind of thing.”
Dean nodded. “Ah, so the usual. What are you going to do?”
“For starters I’m bringing you with.”
“Excuse me?” Dean looked shocked.
Sam released his brother. “There are too many of them. I’d take Astiratu, make him mad enough to level the place, but thanks to you he is still bound for we don’t know how much longer. That means we need numbers.”
“Isn’t that a bad idea?”
“Cas, Liam, and Bobby think so. I’m not so sure.”
“Well, they’re right. Because either it’s a trap to get me there to make me say yes, or it’s not a trap and I’m gonna say yes anyway. And I will. I’ll do it. Fair warning.”
“No, you won’t. When push shoves, you’ll make the right call. And you were right about there being more to the story between Astiratu and Lucifer. Cas says a very long time ago they were lovers.”
“Seriously?” Dean looked like he might be sick. “Why?”
“You’d have to ask Astiratu that. But they were together for almost four hundred years until Lucifer stabbed Astiratu in the back.”
“Ouch,” Dean shook his head.
“Yeah, so I don’t think he’s gonna help out someone who betrayed him. Like Cas said, he doesn’t forgive and forget the major stuff.”
Castiel took them to a run down looking place in California. “The beautiful room is in an abandoned muffler factory in Van Nuys, California?” Dean looked a little surprised.
Sam looked to Castiel. “Tell me again why you don’t just grab Adam and shazam the hell out of there.”
“Because there are at least five angels in there.”
“So? You’re fast.” Dean looked at him.
“They’re faster.” He handed a special angel killing knife to Liam. “We’ll clear them out. You two grab the boy. This is our only chance.”
Dean sighed and moved to kiss Liam, but Liam moved away from him. “Babe, I know you’re upset with me, but please be careful.”
The two went in and several minutes later Castiel came back out. “All clear.”
Sam and Dean went into the room and found Adam on the floor. Dean went to help him up. “You came for me,” Adam looked surprised.
“Yeah, well, you’re family.”
“Dean, it’s a trap.”
“I figured.”
Zachariah appeared with Liam in tow. “Dean, please. Did you really think it would be that easy? Oh, and look who I found all bound up.”
“Let him go, you son of a bitch.”
Zachariah smirked. “Now what would I do that for? This is a very rare opportunity. You have no idea what a pain in the ass this one has been for me. What I can’t decide is what to do with him. For now...” The angel waved a hand and Adam, Sam, and Liam all doubled over with blood trickling from their mouths.
Dean watched in horror. “Stop it. Stop it right now!”
“In exchange for what?”
Dean swallowed hard. “Damn it, Zachariah. Stop it, please. I’ll do it. Do you hear me? Call Michael down, you bastard!”
The angel’s eyes narrowed. “How do I know you’re not lying?”
“Do I look like I’m lying?” Zachariah turned to summon Michael. “Of course, I have a few conditions. The few people whose safety you have to guarantee before I say yes, and the guy you’re holding is at the top of that list.”
Zachariah dropped Liam and he fell to the floor. “Sure, fine. Make a list.”
“But most of all, Michael can’t have me until he disintegrates you.”
“What did you say?”
“I said before Michael gets one piece of this sweet ass he has to turn you into a piece of charcoal.”
“You really think Michael’s gonna go for that?” Zachariah looked amused.
“Who’s more important to him now? You or me?”
Zachariah stepped toward Dean. “You listen to me. You are nothing but a maggot inside a worm’s ass. Do you know who I am after I deliver you to Michael?”
Zachariah suddenly jerked and there was a bright flash of light before he fell dead. Liam yanked the blade out of the back of his skull and advanced on Dean. “Babe, I get it, you’re pissed, but let’s get out of here and then you can kick my ass.”
Liam nodded and Dean helped Adam up and they all made a run for the door. The door slammed shut before Adam could get through it. Dean tried to go back for him, but the door handle burned to the touch and wouldn’t budge. Then the light went out and the place was just an empty office.
Sam looked to his brother. “So, what changed your mind?”
“Honestly?” Dean looked at the three people standing around him. “When it came right down to it, I couldn’t let you three down. Sam, you had enough faith in me to bring me here. I just…” He turned to Castiel. “And you were right back there in that alley. You rebelled to help me, and that is a very big deal.” Then he smiled at Liam. “Most of all, you. Liam, I was trying to protect you, but I see now that I did more harm than good. Can you forgive me?”
Liam sighed. “Give me a day or two.”
“Fair enough,” Dean nodded. “But there is one thing I gotta know. You and Lucifer, what the hell?”
Liam’s eyes flashed red. “How do you know about that?”
“Cas told us,” Dean answered.
Astiratu sighed. “I don’t know. He took an interest in me when no one else did. If you were to actually sit and have a civil conversation with him you would find him to be very charming. I was into causing trouble, and so was he. It seemed perfect until I found a knife in my back. So, believe me when I say no one wants to see the bastard back in his cage more than me.”
Dean nodded. “Good. Okay, Cas, I really hate this method of travel, but take us back to Bobby’s.”
